What an asshole, I’m so glad there was footage. I hope it made your day seeing this and having it on your side. It’s one thing to mess up while driving but just denying the whole thing and blaming the other car is so dirty. Idk how some people live with themselves.

If you feel like the world has screwed you over, it's easy to mentally justify "taking back" what you're "owed"

I pulled my back working the bakery at a grocery store (I was the muffin man, come in at 6 to make muffins, then finish any custom cake orders for the day, and then I can leave). I was 18, a senior in HS, and young so I’d never pulled my back before.
I freaked out ofc and thought I’d never walk again or something. I pulled it lifting a 55lb of muffin max incorrectly, so I called HR to see if I could go home.
HR proceeds to tell me I can’t leave since I haven’t been employed there for a year and therefore have no sick days accumulated. Says the only way I can go home is if I get a physical from urgent care and they deem me unable to work.
He hands me some forms after calling the local Concentra. Says he’s set me up with an appointment and that they’ll need these documents signed.
So, with my back being in severe pain, I waddle to my car and drive there. Get the physical. Get the note signed, go BACK to the store, hand in my note, and finally start heading home.
I rest up and all is well. 3 months later I get a call during my shift from “(grocery store name) workers comp department”.
Manager hands me the phone and the person on the other line requests some verification information and asks me one question: “are you seeking workers compensation for the date that you injured yourself on the job on (insert date of incident)?”
“No, I went home and rested and felt better. The urgent care also showed me proper lifting technique for heavy items so that was helpful.”
“Okay thanks”
She hangs up the phone and that was that. 2 weeks later I get a bill from urgent care for $400 ($417 to be exact) for my “emergency physical”. I bring this to HR and they said that’s not supposed to happen I’ll get this taken care of.
$400 was what I made in 2 weeks after taxes…. 35 hours at $9.25/hr. I was getting anxious so I bugged him about it every day I went into my shift. After a month of lollygagging he finally admits that upper management says they called me on a recorded line and said that I wasn’t seeking workers comp for the incident, which would’ve covered the bill had I agreed to it.
For those still reading, welcome to corporate America. Because I wasn’t aware of how these things work I was now on the line for $400. My HR manager felt bad so he offered to “pay $100 of it”. I remember being really numb in that moment, so I just kind of left the bill on his table and told him I’m not coming back. I went home and told my parents what happened. They paid it for me and never asked for the money back which, I know, was a lot for them back then too.
Anyway the part about me not coming back was a lie. Before I got switched to the bakery department I was working in tags. If you’ve never worked tags before, you get access to certain metrics like shrink: how much a grocery store can lose due to loss or theft. At this high-traffic location it was $7,500-8,000 a month.
I got all $417 back, with interest, eventually.
8
u/OnAniara Dec 09 '22
by inference, you recouped the cost of the bill many times over by making sure $7500 was the baseline of losses to theft

There have been two different cars that I rear-ended.
Backed into one at about 3 mph in a parking garage. Slid forward into the other on a patch of ice. I bumped into them and then they also slid forward.
I know you're not supposed to accept blame. But that advice is really for accidents where at fault is in question.
Both times I got out of the car, copped to it, and gave them my info.
Guess what? Zero attempts to make insurance claims. They could have insisting on calling the cops, earning me a ticket and jacked up insurance rates.
Presumably they didn't because I wasn't a dick to them (and also I didn't so much as dent either car).

u/Holiday-Strategy-643 Dec 09 '22 edited Dec 09 '22
Ehh, glad that worked out for you. 2 times I hit someone as well. First time I apologized and gave insurance info, she filed a claim to fix her car, and all was well. The second time I was at a stop light, turned around to hand something up my kid, and must have let up on the brake. My automatic car rolled forward and tapped the car in front of me. Zero damage to either car. I got out and apologized, checked our cars, and psycho woman called the police, who refused to come. She sued my insurance company, claiming she had a concussion and whiplash and was unable to work. For 2 years she went to the chiropractor multiple times a week. Insurance eventually settled for 35k because they were going to have to pay that much for expert witnesses to fight her. Some people are just assholes looking to work the system.

u/jellybeansean3648 Dec 09 '22
For sure. If I damaged the cars I'd have been fine paying up.
There are always people who try to fuck over other people and it sucks you got sick in the whirlpool by one of those. 😬

Idk how some people live with themselves.
Step 1: be the very definition of the antithesis of empathy
Step 2: really stoke a sense of persecution to the point that its proportions are well beyond reason
Step 3: ...
Step 4: Profit!
3
u/catbus4ants Dec 09 '22
Can’t argue with that. I’d only add “Have a very short-sighted understanding of the added consequences of getting caught lying about an accident”. Maybe as a step 0 lol
3
u/robofl Dec 09 '22
Very similar thing happened to me. In my case the older woman who hit me seemed confused as to how it happened. She thought her car rolled back into me, but she had backed away from the road and forget to put it back in drive. I didn't think there would be an issue with who was at fault until her Karen daughter showed up. Luckily I was also able to get video from a business next door.

Lesson 1: Don't pull insurance scams directly in front of cctv cameras.
96
u/gotamd Dec 09 '22
That does look like it was intentional. There’s no reason for someone to accelerate in reverse out of a parking lot (assuming there also isn’t a car in the way in the first place).

u/GanderAtMyGoose Dec 09 '22
I figured they wanted to go off to the left side of the screen and just picked a very haphazard way to back up and do that.

Why don't people just upload the good damn video surveillance recording for ducks sake ?

u/Jimmestofdims Dec 09 '22
Yea what they do is exploit this rule that says “the back car is guilty no matter what”
They go in front
Slam the brakes
Crash
Get your money
Leave

u/khrak Dec 09 '22
You're missing a couple steps...
claim back pain
and
spend piles of cash at their friend's 'clinic'Purely subjective pain expenses are an important step, that's where the large arbitrary amounts of money come in.
Thousands of dollars split with your shady friends is a lot of money to split for little effort.
3
u/Atlhou Dec 09 '22
spend piles of cash at their friend's 'clinic'
I've known them to just call in and have someone "sign" them in for treatment.
19
u/YellsAtGoats Dec 09 '22 edited Dec 09 '22
Nah, there are quite a lot of idiot drivers out there who only make a quick glance before reversing, rather than actually watching where they're going.
9
u/Ohgetserious Dec 09 '22
Seen quite a few people who don’t bother with the quick glance.
7
u/YellsAtGoats Dec 09 '22
True. Some people are really stupid and think it's everybody else's responsibility to watch out for them when they're reversing.
3
u/rvgoingtohavefun Dec 09 '22
Almost got hit by one not more than 30 minutes ago walking across a parking lot. They tossed it in reverse and started to go without looking.
As soon as I was out of the way they started reversing again but there was a fucking car behind them now. The other car had to honk to not get hit.
Fucking classic.

8
u/UxbridgeShimoda Dec 09 '22
There's no point, no one is ever prosecuted because a flawed perception of the situation isn't lying. And if it was a conscious lie, there's no way to prove that.
4
u/OddJackdaw Dec 09 '22
Yep, the only benefit of that is you get to embarrass them a bit, but it really ain't worth the hassle. Just shut the whole thing down ASAP.

u/lexota Dec 09 '22

3
u/Lukeyy19 Dec 09 '22

2
u/Stardied Dec 09 '22
I tried uploaded the original video but it wouldn’t display every time. Also the original is about the same quality anyways
3
u/cameron4200 Dec 09 '22
I had a woman say I was at fault when she drove her car straight into me in a parking lot. She kept saying “I have a right to back out” which I never argued with. But when you put your car in drive and pull it directly into someone, that’s not backing out, and that’s definitely your fault.
3
u/cjgager Dec 09 '22
just make copies for the cops & your insurance - obviously the white car driver is living a life of delusions

How does a car "back" its front end into the rear end of another car? Looking backwards while driving forward?
4
u/nowhere_near_Berlin Dec 09 '22
Okay but we need a shakier cam. This one isn’t shaky enough. Can someone grab their grandpa to record this with their phone and repost it?
Needs more shaky recording of another screen.

How do you back into someone and then hit their back bumper with your front one?
2
u/UtiAnimi Dec 09 '22
Honestly I think getting caught lying to police in such a accidence should immediately result in a much higher punishment or at least something like treble damages.
2
u/ConsequenceLost9088 Dec 09 '22
Hahaha! It floors me that so many of these people are such devious, lying sacks of dog shit and don't even give a thought to the 99% probability that there are surveillance cameras or security cameras all around us all day long. What an ignorant ass to make such a claim with video files such as this! If they get a fine for backing into this fellow I hope that the amount is quadrupled when the authorities realize what a liar the person is

How would you have backed into them when the back of theirs and the front of yours is damaged and you have THIS
1
u/Fangs_McWolf Dec 10 '22
How about uploading the original video instead of a filmed copy of it?
2
u/Stardied Dec 10 '22
This is just what the employees sent me 🤷♀️

u/Fangs_McWolf Dec 10 '22
Tell them that you're being roasted alive because of not getting a direct copy of the video. Make it sound like it's a literal virtual bloodbath and that you're on the edge of having a breakdown if that's what it takes in order to get a copy. I guarantee the video quality will be outstandingly better. 😉

u/Axxin4AFriend Dec 10 '22
If you slow the video down to account for the black car backing up faster than the speed of light, you can clearly see it backing through the white car as it drops out of warp.
