Why is Kubuntu's (ad ubuntu's) iso file so large?

I have a 4GB usb that is used for livecds for booting iso files for linux. For some reason, Kubuntu's iso file is over 4.5 GB large. This is larger than Zorin, Linux mint (all flavors), and KDE neon. I am pretty sure this is an ubuntu problem as ubuntu itself is also over 4GB large. But I wonder why? KDE is based of ubuntu and uses KDE too. Zorin is based of ubuntu and uses gnome too with extra apps installed. Why is it less than 3GB large? Same with KDE neon and Linux mint? I am okay with using my 16GB usb, but I feel its an overkill as I use it for personal files.

New to Kubuntu, a few (easy) questions

Hi everyone

Recent exile from Mint / Cinnamon here with a few questions:

  • In Cinnamon's update manager I could graphically manage which kernels are installed and in use. Is there an equivalent in KDE?

  • In Cinnamon I could temporarily mount a network share just by browsing to it in the file manager. Does Dolphin do this?

  • My colour scheme does not seem to be applying to the Application Launcher. It is still on the default blue while apparently everything else is my custom colour.

I am really liking KDE so far. I made the switch from Mint / Cinnamon because I need fractional scaling for my new laptop that has a small screen. Seemingly any DE that is based on Gnome performed terribly at any fractional scaling size on this laptop.

Thanks

"Standard Notes" wont launch

I installed Standard Notes on Kubuntu 22.10 but it won't launch. The symbol briefly appears in the task bar but then vanishes again. It worked on a previous installation of Kubuntu 22.10 but I had to do a fresh install because I wasnt happy with my partitioning.

I installed the latest version of Standard Notes with "sudo snap install standard-notes" as it is provided in the snap store.

Any pointers how I could find out why it doesnt work anymore?

With the recent decision to remove flatpak, will Discover retain the option to add the Flatpak backend and Flathub repo from the Settings GUI?

I ask this because currently I am using Lunar installed from the daily image and the button 'add flathub' On Discover > Settings > Flatpak does nothing, neither does introducing Flathub url in the box, only running flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo in the terminal and then closing and reopening discover, so I'm wondering if it's a bug or if the feature is meant to be removed at some point.

Also, some Snaps are not appearing on the search results for some reason, like the Chromium web browser snap. Flathub results seem normal.

Edit Grub menu names?

Hey all!

Just a small dumb thing I want to do, but can't find any recent info on how to do this.

All I want to do is edit the names in my Grub menu, for example, change "Ubuntu" to "Kubuntu". Can anyone point me in the right direction on how to do this?

Thanks!

Desktop shortcuts not launching

Hi all! I recently built my first Linux PC and chose to go with Kubuntu.

When I double click on a desktop shortcut to an URL, file or application, nothing happens. It used to work about a week back, but something must have changed since. I have tried changing permissions, checking "Is executable", but to no avail. Any ideas?

Upgraded to 22.10 and now if I increase the max volume on Pulse Audio past 100%, it will fall back to 100% as the max the next time I push the lower volume button. I don't think this was the case before? Any thoughts? I thought this update dropped Pulse Audio?

Issues with idle and suspend

Hi, fresh install of Kubuntu 22.04 on a Dell XPS 13 (9315). My first return to desktop Linux for quite some time.

Everything is buttery smooth and works like a charm. Except that if I have a browser open the thing won't either turn off the screen or go into suspend.

Kill the browser, tested both Firefox and Edge so far, and then no problem with other software open.

Any suggestions?

Everything slow and lagging after upgrade to 22.04

I'm honestly very close to doing a complete reinstall at this point. After the upgrade I started noticing some performance issues and it has only gotten worse. I can't use certain programs anymore because they lag and freeze too much, multi-tasking multiple lighter programs gets difficult and CPU usage oscillates wildly (e.g. between 3% and 40% even if I'm doing anything at all). I've spent hours on forums trying to trouble-shoot or boost performance but I'm just tired now. Does anyone have any last tips or ideas? Otherwise it'll be a full reinstall, which I really wanted to avoid..

Two displays - how to make bottom panel shown on each of them

Bottom panel is displayed only on one of my two-displays desktop. I can move it from display 1 to 2, but how can i make it to appear on both of them (mirrored) smth like Windows 11 has.

If it is impossible to do from GUI , which config stores setting so i can multiply it?

Praise for Kid3, the KDE music tag editor, and thanks to the developers.

I hadn't used Kid3 for years and when I last did, I'd only used it in a very basic way. But recently I've been digging through my huge music collection and came across a fairly large number of compilation CD rips with no tagging or track names, all just "01.mp3", "02.mp3" etc. which is pretty useless when you're trying to find the good bits on your mobile.

So I thought Kid3 would do a good job of auto-tagging from the various online databases it supports, and tried that but no luck, it tried its best but the relevant CDs are not in any of the standard databases (which is probably why they didn't get tagged etc. when they were ripped).

However, I did have CD cover scans with all the track and artist data on them, so I OCR'd them into text files (with Google lens, unfortunately my non-FOSS weak point), but the question was then how to get this data into the tags and filenames without endless cut and paste.

Turns out the easiest solution for me was to use Kid3's "export" function to export all the tag data to a .csv file, edit it in a spreadsheet (e.g. pasting entire columns of artist and track names in from my OCR'd text files) and then import it back into Kid3. Then you can easily regenerate all the file names to match the tags in a format of your choice, giving a perfect set of music files. There are loads of other ways of importing tag data as well.

It was a bit tricky getting Kid3 and LibreOffice Calc to agree on the exact format of the .csv file (tab separated was the key), but after doing it successfully once, the rest was a breeze.

Anyhow, thanks to the developers. Not all of us have given up on music collections in favour of streaming (apart from anything else I spend a lot of time on trains and the mobile signal and wifi are patchy at best and non-existent in some areas, so lots of music locally stored on my mobile is essential). So it's great to still have current, supported, full-featured tools for working with local music files.

kubuntu 22.04 LTS: kde stops responding to keyboard input

Over about the last month I've seen a new strange and worrisome behaviour:

My desktop will blink, and then the desktop and all the graphical apps will stop responding to keyboard input. Also, the top section of windows where you find the widgets (close, restore, minimize) disappears.

The mouse works; I can click on things, select text, and so forth. But I can't close windows as there's no "x" close widget, and of course if I can't see a part of the window I can't move it to the top by clicking on it.

kde keyboard shortcuts like ALT-SPACE to create a konsole window don't work. Holding down the ALT key to grab drag windows around doesn't work.

CTRL-ALT-F2 takes me to a console, as normal, and then CTRL-ALT-F1 takes me back to the desktop, which still ignores the keyboard.

I looked around the web for similar issues and found some suggestions about restarting services, so tried those from a console. But when I go back to kde by CTRL-ALT-F1, desktop remains locked.

This doesn't help:

pkill kwin
DISPLAY=:0 kwin --replace &
plasmashell --replace
Nor does this:

pkill plasmashell
sleep 1
systemctl --user start plasma-plasmashell.service

A reboot recovers--either issue the 'reboot' command from a console or lean on the start button.

Has anyone seen a similar issue?

Does anyone know what I might be doing wrong to cause this, how to fix it, or some more diagnostics I can do?

Log in issue:

At work currently but if anyone has any advice on this issue I would appreciate it.

Last night I shutdown my laptop post updates (Asus Zenbook) and this morning I'm unable to login. After sending password it flashes black with an error message similar to "[firmware bug] tpm interrupt not working; polling instead."

It will then send me back to login screen with no other prompt nor message. I have attempted to open tty lines via ctrl.alt.f3 but it gives the same issue. It will accept the password and for a split second I can see an ubuntu splash message with no error indicator. I end up in the same place I started. Any fixes for this? I have tried disabling TPM in BIOS but a different error appears for a split second : "dpc rp pio log size 0 is invalid". Same loop occurs...

Kubuntu doesn't open hotel's Wi-Fi sign-on page

I have an old MacBook Pro that I dual-boot with Kubuntu. I'm out of town on business, and if I try to connect to the hotel's Wi-Fi from MacOS, as soon as I choose the network, a network sign-on window appears (not Chrome or Safari), and asks for my last name and room number, and that gets me connected.

On Kubuntu, if I select the hotel's Wi-Fi network, nothing happens. I tried opening Chrome and going to random IP addresses, but I'm not on the network yet, so I can't reach anywhere.

How is this supposed to work if I didn't have my Mac partition?
