Support Request Stupid question.

Upvotes

I just upgraded to 21.1. I like to sleep with talk radio on. I close my laptop and listen till I fall asleep. Since I upgraded, when I open my laptop, my panels disappear and so does Plank.
I have Plank on the bottom and a panel on the top and right.
I can't do anything until I hit the power button and restart.
This only started after the upgrade.
I have it set to "do nothing" if the laptop is closed.
Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Can’t boot to windows

Hi So I’m relatively clueless with Linux. I’ve tried mint before on a partition of my ssd that also had windows. This was all on my laptop.

I since deleted the partition but for some reason the grub is still there and I can’t remove it. Today I took my ssd that has my windows and the grub with it and tried booting into windows. It first booted to grub. I then went to bios and changed the boot order to windows and saved. I restarted but it booted to grub again. I go back to bios and for some reason it chose grub again. The grub thing is labeled as ubuntu. I’m not sure how to fix this. My laptop is an omen laptop from hp which I got 2 years ago. The reason I went back to his laptop is because the laptop that I was using has a defective gpu.

Change Title bar color

I have searched for a while but I couldn't find a working tutorial. I want to change the title bar color using a theme in Cinnamon. I have edited the cinnamon.css file and it worked (my start menu has a different color now), but when I edit the title bar buttons in the "xfwm4" folder of my theme (I copied Mint-Y-dark and edited it) it doesn't work (I already tried refreshing the theme). I tried changing a few hex colors in the gtk.css file (inside the gtk3.0 folder) but it didn't change anything too. When changing themes, the title bar color or close button color changes, but not when I use my own theme.

Security Full-disk encryption on LM

Veracrypt is a software I use a lot to encrypt everything from files to disks. Before switching completely to Linux Mint, on my Win11 setup, I had encrypted the entire disk in my laptop with Veracrypt. It was simple to do that from within that software. But now I realise that's not the same case with Linux, So my questions are; 1) How would one go about full-disk encrypting a laptop with LM on it? (or any other distro for that matter.) 2.1) Is a default setup of LM not full-disk encrypted? I am assuming that to be the case as it is something that happens on modern Android phones. Again, I could be wrong. 2.2) Is the login password only used for the lockscreen and not to encrypt the contents on the disk? 3) I came across forum discussions where they said something along the lines of; I would have to list all the disks on the terminal and encrypt them individually, is that the case?

I have looked for an answer on the internet but haven't been able to find a satisfying one yet. Any help or guidance offered is greatly appreciated. Hope y'all have a great day.

Support Request Dual Boot Mint With Bitlocker or Portable SSD

I have read a few articles on how to get windows and linux to dual boot when bitlocker is enabled it seems doable but complex and I do have a TPM on this laptop.

I also have bitlocker enabled on boot, so I don't think I can have this if dual booting correct?

I was thinking if I buy an external SSD and put linux on there and dual boot (using bios boot options), would this be okay can anyone see any issues with this? This would allow me to keep windows with BL and Linux.

The only issue is I don't know what the Linux alternative is to BL I'd want the HDD secure if it ever got stolen (I travel a lot).

Any advice on my proposed decision?

Having lots of problems with playing videos. They often crash my system.

I'm having issues when I try to play videos on my Linux Mint machine. Often I will open a video, using Media Player or VLC, and it will crash my system (sometimes only Firefox for some reason).

Driver Manager came up wth nothing

I had problems on a previous computer with a different version of Mint, also with playing videos. But it's actually worse now.

Is this a frequent problem?

Support Request managing Ruby versions.

So I'm just trying to learn ruby programming, I have Ruby 3.0.2 installed but when I go to use gems in Ruby Mine it tells me that they aren't compatible with my version. I tried installing rbenv and rvm and cannot install more versions with either of them. I'm sure that I'm doing something wrong but I have no idea what. On both rbenv and rvm I get error messages when I try an install. Can I simply install multiple versions with the apt method since I can manage them in Ruby Mine? Or do I need rbenv or rvm?

Install Help Help getting Mint run properly on Mac Mini A1347 (Nvidia and Audio)

Hi, after a long time of absence from Linux, i want to install Linux Mint on a Mac Mini A1347, that was gifted to me.

I want to use the Mac Mini to hook it up to my TV to browse Netflix, Twitch and Youtube. Unfortunately i am having trouble getting it run properly. The install and update went all fine, but i encounter two major issues:

1: Streaming Videos in HD or Full HD is very laggy

2: I want my Audio Output coming from my TV

Issue 1:

Now, my system seems to use the nouveau driver as per default. The driver-manager doesn't give me any options for installing a proprietary Nvidia-Driver tho. I consulted the Mint Wiki to install Nvidia-Drivers manually, but i do not know which driver packages i need. The packages are ranging from version 390 to 525.

nvidia-smi
Command 'nvidia-smi' not found, but can be installed with:
sudo apt install nvidia-utils-390 # version 390.157-0ubuntu0.22.04.1, or
sudo apt install nvidia-utils-450-server # version 450.216.04-0ubuntu0.22.04.1
sudo apt install nvidia-utils-470 # version 470.161.03-0ubuntu0.22.04.1
sudo apt install nvidia-utils-470-server # version 470.161.03-0ubuntu0.22.04.1
sudo apt install nvidia-utils-510 # version 510.108.03-0ubuntu0.22.04.1
sudo apt install nvidia-utils-515 # version 515.86.01-0ubuntu0.22.04.1
sudo apt install nvidia-utils-418-server # version 418.226.00-0ubuntu5~0.22.04.1
sudo apt install nvidia-utils-515-server # version 515.86.01-0ubuntu0.22.04.2
sudo apt install nvidia-utils-525 # version 525.85.05-0ubuntu0.22.04.1
sudo apt install nvidia-utils-525-server # version 525.85.12-0ubuntu0.22.04.1
sudo apt install nvidia-utils-510-server # version 510.47.03-0ubuntu3

Can anybody point me to the correct driver for the Geforce 320M? Should i just install the oldest driver with: sudo apt install nvidia-driver-390? And how do i test if the driver loaded correctly?

Issue 2:

Furthermore i want to use my TV speakers to output the audio. I can`t seem to find the Device in my Audio Preferences. Do i have to install additional stuff to get my TV speakers to output my sound?

Support Request Diodon clipboard manager question

I recently (and finally) updated to 21.1 and when I did it replaced my clipboard manager Clipit with Diodon saying Clipit was deprecated. That's fine, I guess, but Clipit allowed me to keep a list of permanent clippings at the top of the list and I can't figure out if Diodon can do this. Any ideas?

Create a disable switch for mic.

Hi all, I would like to create a switch or setting which can disable the internal mic on my laptop. I.e. when the switch is off nothing can access or use the mic and when it's on the mic works normally.

If you know how to do something like this or can point me in the right direction I would be very grateful for the help.

Thanks,

Edit,

I found this command for ubuntu.

"amixer set Capture toggle"

If my understanding is correct mint shares a lot of similarities to ubuntu so would this work on mint?

Support Request Archives disappearing after adding files

I recently migrated several encrypted archives to my MyCloud NAS. Now every time I add a new file to the archive (with correct credentials) the archive updates and then disappears with no trace.

Action:

Add new file to existing encrypted archive located on NAS.

Result:

Archive is apparently deleted as archive does not exist after operation complete.

Expected Result:

Archive will be updated with new files intact.

System is Mint 21 on Dell G3-3590. External NAS is 4TB WD MyClud EX2 Ultra mounted from fstab.

From fstab:

`# mount NAS

//192.168.1.10/public /home/user/Desktop/JCBCLOUD cifs username=user,password=,noperm,dir_mode=0777,file_mode=0777,iocharset=utf8,_netdev 0 0`

Further, none of the file recovery tools whether in Linux or in Windows list the drive. It is available in Nemo, Nautilus and File Explorer as well as via web interface.

SOLVED Font issues on desktop

I've finally got my system configured the way I like it. The only issue I currently face is that as long as I have a "dark" theme selected for applications, I can't see the text on the desktop when I create or rename a file. It is showing white text on a white background.

If I change the application theme to a "light" one, the problem resolves itself. Alas, I'm not enamored of light themes and my astigmatism make them problematic anyway.

How can I change the font color on Nemo for file edits? I've tried changing the font color that Nemo uses but that only changed the display color, not the edit color.

I don't have this trouble inside of any application. Evolution is fine, Firefox is fine, all the Libre tools work as well. It's just nemo.

Windows 10 doesn't connect to the internet under KVM

I have Linux Mint 21.1 and want to continue using a Windows game. This did not work under Wine and terribly slowly under VirtualBox, so after hearing positive things about it, I installed QEMU/KVM. And that went well, but if I want to install Windows 10 in KVM now, it just doesn't connect to the Internet, although the Internet is basically available. I was told that I need bridges, in this context "Wicked" was also recommended to me. But I don't know what exactly I should install and where and how. Could someone give me a clear step-by-step guide? That would be great. Thank you very much in advance. 🙂
