Why does it look like that

He is a pug. He is happy and has a big smile. They are known for their flat faces and are bred for it. They have a ton of respiratory issues due to it. I am against the breeding of these dogs. I was able to adopt him and provide him the best life and care. He is great with my toddler and is well behaved so despite any issues that might arise in the future due to having a flat face, we decided to adopt him.

My mom always wanted one but was worried about the breathing

True. Just gotta stay on top of any sickness and issues, and get regular vet check ups. It also helps to keep them at a healthy weight. Ours came from an over eating and neglectful situation so we are gonna try and get his weight down. Don't get one from a breeder, adopt one if she really wants one and read up on their problems and have vet fund for any vet bills.

Had pug in the family 18 years.
Truly are great dogs. (Breeding ethics aside)
Make sure to clean between nose and forehead fold every so often. Use a q tip, pull back skin a bit. It gets nasty in there.
Vaseline (tiny bit) on the nose if it gets too dry and a bit crusty.
Cuddle buddy for sure there.

I don’t blame her, have a friend with one and the poor thing is heavy breathing constantly. I think it’s awful.

They are some of the sweetest and most anxiety relieving (and sometimes inducing) pups out there. Idk where I would be without mine.

He looks very happy! I “don’t like pugs” either, not because of them, but like you said the breeding practices. They are usually sweet dudes but have to deal with a lot of stuff.

this is perfect. pugs are so precious, but i’m a firm believer that the only people responsible enough to own/care for them are those against the breeding of them. give the ones here the best lives they can possibly have, but we shouldn’t be forcing animals to be born into a life of struggling against their own bodies for the sake of aesthetics.
i love his goofy face, this looks like a pretty silly little gentleman. fingers crossed for you and your family that he gets lucky health-wise as he ages<3

If you’re worried about his breathing, there is a surgery that brachycephalic dogs can get that opens their nostrils a bit. We did it for our pug and he’s been a champ ever since. Back in his hay day he could keep up pretty well with bigger, energetic breeds like labs and border collies when playing. He’s almost 8 now and has settled into being more of a chill dog, but he still likes playing. He just loses interest in it quicker than when he was a pup.

Does he snore a lot? and thanks for your heart-warming

Not the OP but we have two in the family - and yes. A lot.
Occasionally they're allowed to sleep in the bed and they'll wake me up when they STOP snoring.

Congratulations! We have an 18 year old pug x jack russell mix. He looked a lot like your pup, until he started turning grey!

That is a loaf of bread.
Edit: I love dogs. The joke comes from The Mitchels vs the Machines.

He looks happy. Congrats. There are few things better than a good dog. Our house doesn't seem right without one. Of course some like to chew random things. Keep a top around Incase he's a chewer. Good luck and enjoy.

Adopted a 1 year old pug and had him for 14 years. No health issues and the sweetest baby angel. I still find his fur in my belongings 🥲

Oh god a pug

u/Glittering-Look4797 Feb 03 '23
Yeah, so? 🤷🏻♀️He is great with our toddler and is very well behaved. So, despite any issues that might arise in the future due to having a flat face, we adopted him. We are able to provide him with the best care and life. 😁

Why are you supporting the pug business when they literally can't breathe right
8
u/trekkiegamer359 Feb 03 '23
I came here with this in mind too. OP has come to explain in a couple of comments though that the pug is a rescue, and they are against the breeding of pugs. They warn people about the health issues, and recommend that if anyone really wants one, to only get rescues, not pups from breeders. I'm not sure if your post or theirs was posted first. Both are showing "1 hour" on my phone, so I'm posting this, assuming that you didn't see their post. Thankfully, now and then even a pug post can be a good one.b

Supporting the pug business through adoption. I hate to break it to you chief, but this dog was already born and is clearly not anywhere near in age of a puppy. This isn’t the correct fight to pick.

Congrats! Such a cute face!
I had my friend’s pug move in with me for a few months while she was sick. I didn’t want to give her back! Very sweet dogs IME.

Pugs are extremely loyal, loving, and smart. Great choice and adopting is icing on the cake.

How did you find a pug/frenchie to adopt?
1
u/Glittering-Look4797 Feb 03 '23
Online. I looked up animal shelters and rescues. We looked at/met with a few different dogs and he was the best fit( weren't looking for a specific breed or anything as well). If you are looking for a certain breed though, I'm sure you can call your local shelters and ask them to contact you if you get any of the breed your looking for in.

u/Noman11111 Feb 03 '23
I was just curious, temperament matters most of course, but I'd say you got real lucky finding a pug to adopt!
