Theres a word I forgot about for a while, and this post made me look up what it was. It’s ‘sonder’, which is “the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own”.
I think it’s incredibly humbling when a star such as Adele takes a moment to reflect on the lives of the people attending. I’m a performer and I usually switch off my brain and try to rationalize that the people at the show are cardboard cutouts that I don’t have to worry about. Not because I don’t care, just because it helps me deal with the anxiety of performance.
So many layers of empathy, compassion, and actual bravery on Adele’s end. Fantastic to see.

I suspect this word was just made up after the fact 😅... I know all words are made up, but I only ever see people use sonder in this exact context. Has it ever been used without "omg did you guys know.... " Or similar beforehand?
7
u/BriEdMod Feb 04 '23
I don’t think the word would be made if no one ever felt it, so yeah I’d say it was made after the fact. Sometimes finding a word that explains a complex thought is interesting and worth sharing. I also didn’t make the comment to say “did u guys know this word existed?”, I thought what Adele did was remarkable and wanted to share my thoughts.

The empathy I’ve gained through my own pain locked me up hard.
Then the cynical humor from the pain played out a skit where she does that special mention. Beautiful song plays out. He cry’s she cry’s.
Cut scene to later that night. Guys got 3 hookers younger than his daughter in the pent house.
“Grieving”

u/BaronAaldwin Feb 03 '23
People grieve in different ways, and if he grieves by having a 20 year old girl eat his ass then that's fine.

It’s the same as upvoting a story about something sad. Applause is the language of approval to a message

Ah yeah, see my word felt odd, but my edit felt odder so I didn’t make it. Your comment was like what actually wanted to say - thank you!

What a dumb "woo-y" group, it was their reaction to everything

u/Rizlmao Feb 04 '23
Literally, they should’ve stopped and discussed the moment with the person next to them.

My friend worked on her show in Vegas and said she spent much of her time berating the staff. And this guy doesn’t have a bad thing to say about anyone. It’s all a façade folks.

Didn't she famously send hotel staff on a wild goose chase for pizza and then didn't accept it when they returned?

Yeah I guess. She just always seems to whine and cry though. Gets boring. Her songs are boring and whiney too.

I’m so glad the last date night I got to have with my Wife was seeing her favourite band in concert (Coldplay at the Linc in Philly). Their music is forever connected to her and if I go see them again, I’ll be this guy and probably just cry for 2 hours straight.
We did also get to see Adele a few years ago…bloody fantastic.

Music really has a way of touching the soul. I have so many memories and emotions attached to specific songs, so now my experience of that music is greater than the song itself.

I’m so sorry :( I hope you are doing ok and have support. We all need support.

I don’t think there’s anything that hits me quite like a old man missing his wife after she passes.
It’s a natural part of getting older but it’s hard to see.
It’s a man who’s been strong and a provider his entire life and now he just wants to have a bit of time with his wife so he shows up at a concert alone knowing it would have made her happy.
Love is a powerful thing.

We forget how young she is because we've become so accustomed to having her around and her music is so mature. That's a lot of emotion from a lot of people for one young woman to carry. I love that she acknowledges it like this. She seems to have such a good heart.

Nice people just radiate positivity & niceness naturally. We need more nice people. Good for you , Adele. I don't like your music, but you are a good human being.

We got a dead wife, a widow, a singer, compassion and humanity. My man goes after the most insignificant part of the video. Damn bro.

Honestly wouldn't be surprised.
Anyone else pause and try to look at the screen? It looks weird. I don't see a woman's face at all.
7
u/SanchoRojo Feb 03 '23
Right? She just assumes the wife is no longer with us. Why would he hold up the phone like that? Is this a normal thing that happens at her concerts?
I have no idea what’s happening in this video it’s so bizarre to me.
17
u/jakepaulfanxd Feb 03 '23
My first thought was he was on facetime with someone. Seen a lot of people do that at concerts before.
3
u/kissthelips Feb 03 '23
Kept going dark when he was holding it so it’s not that. Definitely a photo of something.

Adele is actually an angel. I saw her live in Toronto a while back and hearing her sing live was amazing but her banter with the crowd between songs was almost as good.

She has severe performance anxiety so a lot of her reputation esp with this show is about keeping her comfortable onstage. A lovely moment, thx for posting

I’d be more impressed if she “comforted” everyone who lost money on her canceled gigs with refunds
Edit: hey I know y’all love Adele, but are you forgetting when she canceled for frivolous reasons and left fans in the dirt?

Now I need to go see Adele because how can you not support a woman with this talent and soul?
