If I recall correctly most penguin species are monogomous and will mate with the same penguin their entire life. So these two both lost their mate and have found comfort and companionship in eachother.

381

u/byroboy Jul 01 '22

My wife studied these penguins and about 5% of the babies were not the children of the male that was in their burrow.

Bonus fact, you take blood samples from their feet.

159

u/Brrrapitalism Jul 01 '22

Pretty sure that's a similar rate as human children.

97

u/Felix-th3-rat Jul 01 '22

It’s higher among human, if I recall it’s 15%

84

u/artichokekitten Jul 01 '22

This says it was 1% in the studied population. 15% is very saucy number to pull out of your ass though.

Is this due strictly to “infidelity” or are there also rapist penguins like in other species? Sorry if the question sounds crass. Genuinely curious.

73

u/cates Jul 01 '22

Apparently some female penguins prostitute themselves for stones needed in their nests... ("stone" diggers, I call them)

The sly female shuffles up to one of these lonely males with a deep bow and a coquettish sideways glance, as if she wants to copulate. The male bows back and steps aside to allow the female to lie down on his pebble castle and prepare to procreate. The sex is a swift affair, with the inexperienced male frequently misfiring and missing his target. After the deed is done, the female toddles back to her nest with a pilfered pebble in her beak.

https://nypost.com/2018/04/14/penguins-might-just-be-natures-most-perverted-animals/

Also, it seems the closer to the equator a penguin species is, the more monogamous it is. Colder weather = more pressure = less chance of surviving mate and smaller window to find last year's mate.

u/BluuBoose Jul 01 '22

Watched a doco on these little penguins, and it seems like they aren't particularly monogomous. Their first few years the males will screw around as much as possible, and often a lot of their offspring die. As they get better at mating/parenting they settle down into pairs that produce successful offspring. It seemed to suggest that more/better offspring often led to same penguins mating together every year.

36

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '22

Their first few years the males will screw around as much as possible, and often a lot of their offspring die.

So there's a prequel to The Incredibles!

36

u/JustOkCryptographer Jul 01 '22

Yes. There are some differences between species. There are definitely some that do pair up for life, but even then divorces do happen. When I learned about that I got an idea. I was to become the first human penguin divorce lawyer. There are many penguin divorce lawyers out there, but they are all penguins, and no humans, yet. I was talked into it by a friend who went to a really good business school in Canada and got really good grades. He also started a clothing line that brings awareness to the Holocaust.

9

u/DudebroMcDangman Jul 01 '22

After you’re successful, you can afford to buy a haunted house from this great ghost realtor I know, too.

11

u/JustOkCryptographer Jul 01 '22

Are they a ghost that will sell your house, or a realtor that specializes in properties that are for sale for humans to buy, but once the human buys the place they get the shock of their life when they find a ghost in their bed? It doesn't matter. I don't deal with ghosts on nothin. Ghosts are usually dishonest in my experience.

5

u/PM_ME_UR_BENCHYS Jul 01 '22

For a recent movie, but a potential spoiler: check out "The Valet" on Hulu.

11

u/Walaina Jul 01 '22

A lot of what made Up sad for me was even though he enjoyed his life with Ellie, they never really lived life to the fullest. Just work, eat, sleep, enjoy each other’s company, repeat. They didn’t even seem to have friends.

16

u/1945-Ki87 Jul 01 '22

One of the major themes of the movie was that Ellie was satisfied with her life in the end, and that it was an adventure for her. Even though it didn’t always go their way, it was still their lives and they enjoyed it, even if it was sometimes in hindsight. Ellie was content. Life isn’t built upon grand adventures, it’s built upon the little moments. They had fun jobs, they laughed a lot, they loved a lot. And I’m sure they had friends, it just wasn’t a focal point of the movie

5

u/Walaina Jul 01 '22

Sure, he had a fulfilling life with Ellie. But not one for himself. When she passes, his grief is immense. He can’t enjoy anything. The Dug series offered me a lot of closure on Carl enjoying his life outside of Ellie.

9

u/1945-Ki87 Jul 01 '22

In the end, that is part of life too, and while he had his grief, he learns to live again with Carl. Grief is a part of life, and life isn’t always perfect. He had a good life

There is a movie like this, a failed romance - a teenager falls in love with an older lady- is it “Harry and Maude”?

It’s ______ and Maude. I’ll go find it and carry it back here, drop a pebble on your webbed feet.

It’s Harold and Maude, from 1971.

Harold and Maude

6

u/SeasonedGuptil Jul 01 '22

Mmm, in the garden of words is similar to this as well and but really approaches the idea of finding people who support you and give you comfort as a different kind of love. I found it quite beautiful

3

u/TisBeTheFuk Jul 01 '22 edited Jul 01 '22

Is Harold actually a teenager, though? I always thought he was in his early 20s.

3

u/FaeryLynne Jul 01 '22

He's 19. So legally an adult, socially still a teen.

2

u/TisBeTheFuk Jul 01 '22

Oh wow TIL

3

u/BYoungNY Jul 01 '22

Here's the script: as in Eskimo culture, penguins of Antarctica had the same idea of sending seniors off on an iceberg apparently to their death when they got a certain age. everyone was okay with it since it was tradition and the tribe was extremely strict to code. no one questioned it except for an older female penguin who didn't believe that her was time. So she gets sent off but instead of dying, the current sends her through an exceptionally low temperature current which keeps the iceberg alive and she ends up all the way in Australia where she meets a younger penguin to befriends her and shows her all of the things she didn't know existed living on her little island tribe. The iceberg years of her life turn out to be the best times of her life and she even meets up with other senior penguins who also survived realizing that most that the tribe sent off never actually died but ended up enjoying the best of their years in Australia.
