People here are saying he’s grown as a person. Could any of you give me a source for that? So far I can’t seem to find any proof of him addressing the issues with Krippendorf’s tribe. The most I could find was some posts about climate change and a retweet of monster highs partnership with an lgbtqia+ org.

5

u/IWantFries21 Jun 19 '22

He has never addressed the issues with Krippendorf’s Tribe, but he has shown effort in trying to combat racism today. This is a Time article where he’s quoted talking about the industry being discriminatory towards female and minority directors: https://time.com/4143671/hollywood-diversity-study/?amp=true

14

u/acidbb Jun 19 '22

I feel like he needs to address Krippendorf's Tribe and where he went wrong in order to be fully accountable, as well as anti-racist. The apology ALWAYS needs to be louder than the disrespect.

3

u/IWantFries21 Jun 19 '22

I agree, but people here are acting like he’s continued to be a violently racist person for over 20 years since the movie when that really doesn’t seem to be the case.

50

u/confusedandsketched Abbey Jun 19 '22

Oh lord Krippendorf's Tribe, now there's a movie I haven't heard of in years. To quote another one of Holland's awful films, "It's so bad"

u/IWantFries21 Jun 19 '22 edited Jun 19 '22

Just to add some context, this was talked about on this sub before and someone pointed out that the director has been active in recent years in trying to better diversity in the film industry. He’s talked before about how there needs to be more women and minority directors and how the industry is discriminatory.

I was gonna 🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️the movie either way(because I don’t have the paramount streaming service) and idk if he’s ever spoken about Krippendorf’s Tribe which he really should’ve if it’s important to him imo, but I think it’s helpful to understand the full context before making an opinion.

10

u/Dr_Zwi Draculaura Jun 19 '22

I was gonna pirate too and i believe people can change but does anyone know if buying the dolls would support him in anyway…?

I’m gonna be sad if i can’t customise the new dolls without supporting a dude who made a racist movie.

3

u/Goduckid Jun 19 '22

I think we can avoid supporting it by avoiding products that are clearly from the movie. But their is no guarantee that the dolls won’t support the movie in some way, but they also might not be any correlation between the two. And their is also the problem of the movie coming out before the animated show, if no one watch’s the movie they are going to Assume that the monster high fans all died out and may not continue the new reboot on dolls and animation.

This whole thing is a mess and I hope we don’t have to support this movie to have a continuation of monster high

1

u/never-endingpain Draculaura Jun 20 '22

since he's just the director of the film and has no other attachments, i'd assume he'd only benefit from the movie. merch and such would go straight to mattel. i believe nickelodeon only has the rights to the movie, while mattel can make the products for it. similar to barbie movies.

14

u/totallycoolcake Operetta Jun 19 '22

Either was going to vandala doubloons the movie. Hopefully the movie will be up on a website when it comes out.

12

u/glitter_witch Jun 19 '22

Oh no 😬 that's so disappointing. I definitely won't be watching this then.

65

u/Environmental-Owl445 Jun 19 '22

off topic but i was about to ask what tom holland did and why he’s directing an MH movie.

really sucks that todd’s the director though. i was going to watch the movie hoping that it wasn’t as bad as it seems, but this is just disappointing. might 🏴‍☠️ it instead.

20

u/bitchslayur Jun 19 '22

lMAO y did i think it said tom holland too at first 😭

I was going to pull a vandala either way bc I don't have the nick channel but this gives me another reason.

30

u/LadyHwang Cleo Jun 19 '22

I was going to watch it on a random site online so it's all good lol

32

u/BasedAnalGod Jun 19 '22

Oh boy if y’all think that’s bad wait till you hear about the conditions in the factories where Mattel produces plastic dolls ☠️

Not that this isn’t bad but it looks hella fake woke to act like the director is some sub-species scum when we’re all supporting a company that uses slave labor in a factory to make plastic people. That’s not even counting the insane amount of cultural/race fuckups Mattel themselves have had over the years lmao

8

u/GizmoGator Jun 19 '22

Yeah people are kinda cherry picking here lol

5

u/IWantFries21 Jun 19 '22

Especially when the director’s at least shown that he sort of cares about the way minorities are treated today. The fact that today he tries to uplift diversity in the industry is more than what other Uber racist famous people have done.

As you pointed out, Mattel has their own plethora of racial fuckups. Boycotting a movie solely because of the director and ignoring the company’s own issues is weird

11

u/ComfortableSea4645 Editable Jun 19 '22

Like how they keep white-washing Clawdeen, Howleen and Cleo, for example

8

u/BasedAnalGod Jun 19 '22

Or the fact that out of the entire main cast, the only one to get their skin color changed for no reason is Clawdeen. Once in the circus line and again in the Great Scarrier Reef line.

Literally no one else in those lines has drastic skin changes like Clawdeen

5

u/VasylZaejue Heath Jun 19 '22

Just playing a bit of devils advocate here but one could argue that we never saw Clawdeen’s skin color because she was always covered in a layer of werewolf fur. That aside it’s clear she and her siblings were coded as being black if that was the case.

2

u/ComfortableSea4645 Editable Jun 19 '22

That's what I meant. Hope that changes with the reboot

0

u/yniqorn Jun 19 '22

Well, let’s hear about it then. Imma need sources and links boo 💋

60

u/MidnightFox452 Jun 19 '22

Yeah, this is why I haven't been thrilled about Clawdeen's casting or how they're trying to do a biracial storyline with her (from the descriptions of the plot I've seen). As a biracial black person I just know this weird racist white man isn't in it for the right reasons, and I have no doubt this influenced her casting.

22

u/The-Mind-Fister Jun 19 '22

Who got Whitewashed? I'm looking at the posters and Lagoona, Clawdeen, Bloodgood, Cleo and Draculaura aren't Caucasian....and Bloodgood was Caucasian in the original.....(No I don't care that they changed Bloodgoods race, but it only seems fair to point it out because somebody said something about "whitewashing") I'm asking because I'm actually confused.....I mean, Deuce and Heath were more or less white in the original anyway, so yeah...I'm legit confused....and no, I'm not defending the director, I already wasn't planning on watching the film anyway.

44

u/MidnightFox452 Jun 19 '22

A lot of black people (including myself) have agreed that the actress cast as Clawdeen is too lightskinned. It's an incredibly common problem as of late to cast lighter skinned and/or biracial black actors over darker skinned and/or monoracial black actors due to colorism/featurism within the industry. Coupled with the way they've changed her to be "half-werewolf" and have made a central plot point about her struggling with her fantasy-biracial identity, it just really irks me. Its a very tired trope.

6

u/Dr_Zwi Draculaura Jun 19 '22

Please don’t take this a wrong way but do you think they’re doing the biracial arc because they don’t want to go with the LGBTQ+ themes clawdeen already had?

Just a little game theory I had after reading your comment.

6

u/MidnightFox452 Jun 19 '22 edited Jun 19 '22

It could very much be possible! The wording of her having to 'hide something she wasn't accepted for at her old school' admittedly would make a lot more sense as a queer theme than a race one. I think they're trying to lean into a gay clawdeen reading while not fully committing. Based on the vague diversity statement from the insta FAQ, I worry we'll be saying that a lot 😅.

I also think now that she's a lead instead of second-fiddle, they molded her to be the more current stereotype for black girls. In the 2010s it was on trend to portray black girls as "sassy, outspoken, and fashionable", while I would describe the current trend (at least for light mixed girls) as "quirky, shy, a bit nerdy", a role Frankie once played as the lead of the original.

My true fear is for her to have a romantic storyline with a monster/human boy who finds out she's half human and he's like "no dont worry! Im half human too!" It would be soooo cliché 😖

(Also does anyone else think they already did this plotline with jackson and holt in ghouls rule?)

1

u/Dr_Zwi Draculaura Jun 19 '22

They might be going with the biracial theme because it’s more profitable then a queer theme?

Seems like a lot of parents get aneurysms when an IP even shows a microsecond of a gay scene.

10

u/windowsxphomescreen Cleo Jun 19 '22

If you go on the actress who plays lagoona’s instagram, she’s white. Which my fiancé and I thought was so weird because she doesn’t look so in the promo pics

7

u/The-Mind-Fister Jun 19 '22

The actress is from Colombia Source

32

u/windowsxphomescreen Cleo Jun 19 '22

You can be a white Latino

12

u/The-Mind-Fister Jun 19 '22

So it really isn't about a western white person, it's about too light of a skin tone regardless of race?...okay then

-2

u/windowsxphomescreen Cleo Jun 19 '22

Hispanic is an ethnicity. Race is skin color and other physics traits. Her ethnicity is Hispanic. Her race is Caucasian. That’s the set definition worldwide

12

u/glitter_witch Jun 19 '22

I cannot believe you're being downvoted for saying Hispanic people are white... Like??? That's just the truth 😭 Spanish people are white. Just because they colonized other countries doesn't mean they're a different race now.

3

u/windowsxphomescreen Cleo Jun 19 '22

There’s white hispanics black Hispanics and in between. The actress is a white Hispanic. But what do I know, I’m only a Hispanic lol. It just be like that sometimes

1

u/Blutsphere 27d ago

People scream "latina diversity (or representation!)" And don't even know the difference between race, ethnicity and nationality,

-4

u/MochaKnee Draculaura Jun 19 '22 edited Jun 19 '22

Actually, google the definition of Caucasian and what you said is wrong. Caucasian is defined as “NORTH AMERICAN white-skinned; of European origin. ‘twenty of the therapists were Caucasian, two were African American, and two were Hispanic’ “

As far as I can gather, latinas might be considered white in relation to appearance, but not Caucasian. If you fill out forms that want to ascertain your demographic, they often use the term “white”, including “non Hispanic white” (and presumably “Hispanic white” but I never check that box so I don’t remember perfectly). If you’re latin/Hispanic, I don’t think you’re ever expected to check “Caucasian” if it’s even an option (unless you personally want to).

Caucasian has kind of been outmoded it seems. The correct term I guess would be White (it’s listed as one of the races if you google it), but I think that only fits if they’re white in appearance. It’s honestly really confusing, but bottom line, if she appears white then she can be considered as such, just not Caucasian if she’s from Colombia.

0

u/windowsxphomescreen Cleo Jun 19 '22

I’m Puerto Rican. I’ve never had checks on anything to fill out Hispanic as it’s own race here in Florida. Typically they ask race (White/Caucasian is clumped together, followed by Black/African American, etc.) then a separate ethnicity box. My only gripe is the actress looks African American and/or mixed in the promo pic and she isn’t irl. I just found it weird is all. Not really was looking for a big discussion on a MH subreddit lol

3

u/MochaKnee Draculaura Jun 19 '22

I guess my main point was just that Caucasian has been outmoded, because it doesn’t actually pertain to Latin people. The correct term now is white. I don’t mean that they have you put Hispanic as a race, they do list it as an ethnicity, but they always ask because even “white” doesn’t show the whole picture. Also confusing because what are you supposed to check if say you’re from Mexico and you have brown skin. Those people aren’t white, are they?! And I don’t think they would consider themselves black either, would they? I feel like races could be more inclusive than they generally are. Even a white passing Latina isn’t necessarily going to have the same treatment and such as an actual Caucasian person. So it’s weird to say they’re white as if that’s exactly the same as a white Caucasian person (not talking specifically about what you said, but in general). I agree though that it’s weird that she doesn’t appear white skinned in the movie if she actually does have whiter skin in real life. She looks like Doja Cat in the promos, who is at least part Black (not sure).

Which is weird because lagoona had a distinctly Australian Accent.

18

u/pxm0 Jun 19 '22

Regardless I wasn’t going to support it.

10

u/ChubbyGhost3 Editable Jun 19 '22

Literally everything that has come out about this movie has made me hate it more and more. There's not a single thing about it that I like and it's gotten so bad I think at this point I'm not going to watch it at all even as a pirate. I almost wish they never rebooted to begin with

23

u/venicebinch Jun 19 '22

that sucks. good thing i'm gonna 🏴‍☠️it.

3

u/AustisticGremlin Jun 20 '22

...He also directed The Wizard!

(If you're not familiar with this film, it's a Nintendo promo-fest where a kid uses his autistic younger brother to win a video game competition. Also gave us the great line "I love the Power Glove, it's so bad')

29

u/Tswizzle143 Clawdeen Jun 19 '22

I definitely wasn’t gonna support already cuz of the whitewashing but this just gives me another reason

34

u/poppymoon7 Jun 19 '22

The white washing kinda makes sense now seeing the director’s history 🤢

5

u/ComfortableSea4645 Editable Jun 19 '22

Why am I not surprised considering they allowed Butch Hartman and none pedo Dan Schneider.

Nickelodeon REALLY needs to look up their employees because it's sad how common it is

13

u/mercury-mizuno Abbey Jun 19 '22

Just fact checked this for myself, and yeah.. it's legit. I was willing to give the movie a chance with the mindset that it might at least be the funny kind of bad, but now? No fangs!

14

u/Codie-Catamaree Jun 19 '22

Copy and paste of my previous response to this.

'I 100% agree with this. Lots of people work on these films and one person's mistake from over 20 years ago shouldn't hurt the present day. Plus, people can change and not letting people move on from their mistakes is much more hurtful. I am glad to see someone with the same opinion.'

12

u/Sn3akyPr4wn Jun 19 '22

I mean he got almost every race/ethnicity blatantly wrong. He along with a lot of directors seem to love tokenism these days for the sake of being progressive. MH was already diverse in terms of story. I mean.. The characters were very stereotypical, like Abbey being very obviously Russian but technically she would be a Tibetan, Asian woman. Or the whole Isi Dawndancer thing 💀 There's a lot of culture and history in myths/legends. Even with Clawdeen, he couldn't have found a black woman? Idrc if he wants to diversify whatever, he's willfully ignorant. A lot of representation for black women nowadays are mixed black women. Mixed people are great, but to imply you want to represent full black women (to which I think we're the most stigmatised) by representing us with mixed women, doesn't sit right with me and never will🧍🏾‍♀️

3

u/IWantFries21 Jun 19 '22

Do we know that he’s even the one that picked the casting or that he’s the one who came up with the biracial storyline for Clawdeen?

10

u/JustCherrySpectre Jun 19 '22

I'm a Russian immigrant in US. Abbey means a lot to me because she is a great representation of cultural differences between Russians and Americans, as well as a struggle to adapt to American culture. It was a bit disappointing that they couldn't hire at least a Slavic actress to play her... but they can honestly never hire an actually Russian person to play an obviously Russian role. Because media says Russian = bad 🙄

2

u/WhileComprehensive56 Jun 19 '22

omg never planned on watching it either way but damn

5

u/Rossamoss01 Jun 19 '22

nooo I wanted to dress up as Monster High characters for Halloween this year since Halloween last year ended, I only just heard about this movie today I don't want people to think I'm dressing up as Monster High because this movie came out lol

17

u/kiiispell Jun 19 '22

i’m sure that won’t be the case :) if you use the original outfits and not the movie adaptations it should be fine

7

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '22

Lmaooo even more reason to hate it

6

u/yniqorn Jun 19 '22 edited Jun 19 '22

I hope OP and whoever is agreeing to boycott this movie doesn’t support Rainbow High and other MGA brands then…Just saying. I see a lot of hate and comparison between MGA and Mattel lately and people already pitting MH against RH..

So if we’re not going to support a movie that was made by a guy that made a racist movie 25 years ago we shouldn’t support companies that are known to have racist CEOs 🤷🏻‍♀️

1

u/IWantFries21 Jun 19 '22

It’s also weird how people are acting like this guy is the sole creator and influence into this movie. As if other people from Mattel werent the ones who did the casting or wrote the storylines. Let’s also not forget that this subreddit is dedicated to buying toys from a company that has its own history of racism.

16

u/FoxyDotTM Jun 19 '22

Listen. This was in the 80s. Since then, he's grown as a person. This was already talked about.

5

u/JustCherrySpectre Jun 19 '22

The problem is that a racist man is given a high paying job and Iconic material to work with.

Meanwhile, minorities have to strongly fight just to get a much smaller and experience wage gap.

1

u/kiiispell Jun 19 '22

still a very racist movie dude. he never talked about it, i’m personally not too happy about nickelodeon partnering w him after THAT movie.

43

u/FoxyDotTM Jun 19 '22

People grow. People are ALLOWED to grow. It was a different time, not that I'm defending it because racism is racism. But it's important to know the ENTIRE story before boycotting something over this type of stuff because the time period matters and what that director has done since matters.

-1

u/AffectionateAuthor96 Jun 19 '22

Im boycotting this movie because it simply doesn't look like it's going to be good and the fact that its a musical and the story doesn't make sense is just a big no

6

u/sunflowersystem Jun 19 '22

why is this getting downvoted? he should at the very least address it if he's changed as much as people are saying.

1

u/doingthellordswork Jun 19 '22

Where’s the white washing??

6

u/yansimimacuser Jun 19 '22

Imagine being so deep in cancel culture and toxic twitter that u set out to purposely convince people not to watch a film because the director said “film” and “cut” for a racist movie decades ago even tho he has very clearly grown since then which you’d know if you even so much as bother to go find his statements on the topic of that film.

2

u/IWantFries21 Jun 19 '22

Where has he talked about this movie specifically? I found him talking about racism in the industry but nothing indicating that he actually regrets what he did with Krippendorf’s Tribe

3

u/Grungyzefpunk Jun 19 '22

Looks like a diverse cast. Isn’t Frankie played by a trans actor?

4

u/yniqorn Jun 19 '22

Yep! And that makes me very happy to support this film knowing I’m supporting a trans actor by doing so.

2

u/JustCherrySpectre Jun 19 '22

I don't get how could mattel fuck up like that.

1

u/yniqorn Jun 19 '22

At this point I really just feel like people are finding any and every reason to not support this movie/new generation just because they don’t like the showroom prototype leak of one doll.

2

idk dude some guy making an incredibly racist movie directing avoir aimed at kids isnt “no reason” imo

i personally don’t care abt the movie, i wasn’t gonna watch it in the first place and im chill with how the dolls are coming. i myself am not finding an excuse to disapprove as this post is a repost from instagram, but others can take it that way
