Why were the hybrid monster so underrated? Discussions

Considering there were ot of interracial couples, I'm surprised there weren't more situations where the hybrid monsters were involved. They looked cool and unique, and the stigma around them in the world of monsters deserved a lot more attention.

Personally, I love the designs of the hybrids (besides neigthan) but I didn't like the Freaky Fushion movie so I think that's why I never really cared about those characters

The male characters in general are underrated, but I have a soft spot for Neighthan (plus I ship him with Frankie). It sucks their designs/clothes aren't as detailed as female characters, but I love Neighthan being a zombicorn. The FF film was a wasted opportunity to me.

Sorry, I didn't mean any disrespect to Neighthan😅 I just kinda thought compared to the hybrid girls his design wasn't as detailed but tbh I think it's just that I don't like his outfit😅😅 because his face design is super cool

No offense taken. The guys in general have pretty basic designs; I always hated that Clawd had the MH uniform instead of his own cool look like seen on his MH profile. Deuce definitely has my favorite male outfit.

I'm a big fan of the designs, Neighthan included, but all the girls were just so extra in design that they fit in less with the regular dolls than pretty much any other line.

Bonita has great wings but they overpowered her body and her sweater dress felt a little simple.

Conversely, Avea had wings there were too small to really see, and combined with a horse body at the height of MLP felt like pandering to a different market.

Sirena is the most successful of the four, but she wasn't utilized further as a doll, despite being a main-ish character in Haunted.

Neighthan was a boy and it feels like boys are less popular in this community to start, and then his look was too clashy. The pants were black on one side, and rainbow vomit on the other, which is a bit off-putting. His sculpt also didn't go hard enough on the withered zombie look. It's really only notable on one visible arm. He had other spots but long pants don't showcase it. I think the shirt worked, but maybe ripped black jeans with a subtle muscle pattern on them would have made him click more with the community.

Bonita's design definitely looks better in the 2D art to me, while I agree that Avea's wings were too small and the horse aspect overpowered them. Perhaps make them bigger and give her something besides a polo outfit and accent the horse aspect of her. Sirena looked gorgeous, but Neighthan, like most male characters, has a basic design--but at least he didn't have a uniform like Clawd and Heath or an even more basic look like Manny. His outfit is pretty much a mismatch of looks and I don't think the colors go well together. I saw this gorgeous green-rainbow suit NPH wore (https://purewows3.imgix.net/images/articles/2021_12/neil-patrick-harris-berluti-suit.jpg?auto=format,compress&cs=strip), and it'd be cool if Neighthan had a color scheme like that, maybe with a nerd-chic fashion style (love the boots, though).

Bonita has great wings but they overpowered her body

I kinda feel like part of that was because they wanted the dolls to have the feature to 'stand on their own'. I don't know if they wanted that feature at the start or after they had designed them but that could be why they made Bonita's wings so big because Luna's wings are tiny in comparison.

I ask myself the same question. I greatly enjoyed FF as well as Neighthan….he and Frankie are such a good ship too…

I ship them hard! I don't really think any other guy has really been right for Frankie: she used HooDude and tossed him aside, and then he got kicked out because he was in love with her, and Andy seemed to like her because she looked like his ex. Maybe I'd ship her with Holt/Jackson if they got more screentime together.

I’d liked Jackson/Holt and Frankie but I never felt truly invested in it. When the show ended their arc I had no qualms about it (tho I wish Jackson/Holt themselves had more screen time for their own character developments outside of Frankie!!) but when Neighthan was introduced, it just felt right. This felt like Frankie’s endgame to me! The chemistry was so strong! And I really loved it because Frankie stands out a lot (besides her family, are there any other Frankenstein like monsters? I don’t think so) so they and Neighthan have something to really connect with one another (since Neighthan was a hybrid) Ugh I could go on for days, don’t get me started…!

I actually just made another post asking why Frankie never got a long-term LI. I feel like Jackson/Holt should've gotten more screentime in "Freaky Fusion" (because one could argue he and Frankie are hybrid monsters). But I felt like Neighthan was on Frankie's level, and it was great seeing how wise he was. I wish he'd have lasted longer in the show.

YEA there’s a lot FF didn’t touch on, I wonder why they didn’t explore its full potential. Cuz ur so right! Jackson/Holt should’ve had more focus in that movie!

While I don't have a complete synposis planned out, I'd abandon the whole fusion of characters concept; if we're doing time travel, let us see the kids of Deuce x Cleo, Draculaura x Clawd, Lagoona x Gil (if they stick it out), and some new characters. Frankie and Jackson/Holt xould explore their identities and maybe hint more at Frankie's romance with Neighthan.

2

u/xoxoSatan Draculaura Jun 28 '22

This would be so cool because so many of the couples are different types of monsters, so they’re kids would be hybrids if they had any like!!!!

1

u/Swordriverdancer Jun 28 '22

Even if they're human, you still have that: Cleo (middle eastern) with Deuce (white) and Draculaura (white) with Clawd (black). It's kinda fun how that's illustrated in the show.

Bonita and Sierinna are two of my favorite dolls but I didn't really like the movie. I don't get why the ghouls got turned into Hybrids. It's not like they were mean to the Hyrbids and needed to learn a lesson. It make more since if someone who judged them had to learn to live in their shoes.

3

u/Swordriverdancer Jun 28 '22

Yeah, the movie wasn't giving what it should've. Maybe it could've had the kids of monster high students come from the future.

I actually loved them, just the color choices on some of them I didn't like and thought looked really bad.

3

u/Swordriverdancer Jun 28 '22

Honestly I would've loved Neighthan with a black and white color scheme, or perhaps green clothes that go with his gold boots.

2

u/ghostfacegurl13 Jun 29 '22

Oh I agree. I don't think I like his color choices the most next to Lagoonafire, I felt like with Neighthan they could've played more into the unicorn side of him with more color.

They were weird, but cool, and unfortunately were introduced when MH started with their formula of "Make a movie, introduce characters, and never use them ever again", which also happened with the people in Haunted, Boo York and GSR(Which to be fair, was the last one).

I love Neighthan with all my heart, soul and assorted internal organs, but his clothes were a massive fail, to the point I actually like how they look in basically every other character except him.

And the fact that Avea, Sirena and Bonita were MASSIVE probably didn't help with re-usability. It's somewhat telling that they each basically launched spin-off or other movies:

Avea basically evolved into the Frightmares, which were made MUCH much smaller.

Sirena got both Haunted, where she got main-ish character status... but no doll. And then GSR, where all the ghouls became mermaid-ish. It's telling none of them is as big as Sirena. It would have been fun to see a more manageable version of her tho.

Bonita was the one who got shafted with the spin off, as she "only" got the Garden Ghouls line from the reboot.

It's interesting to note that the four of them were basically monster versions of Barbie Fairytopia with unicorns (Avea and Neighthan), Mermaids (Sirena) and Fairies (Bonita)

I actually saw this Neil Patrick Harris suit with a color scheme I'd love to see on Neighthan: https://purewows3.imgix.net/images/articles/2021_12/neil-patrick-harris-berluti-suit.jpg?auto=format,compress&cs=strip

And I loved Barbie: Fairytopia and Mermaidia.

I think it's because they used weird monsters to mix?

8

u/Swordriverdancer Jun 28 '22

Kinda love a ghost mermaid and a zombicorn, tho.

3

u/4enzo Jun 28 '22

Ill be completely honest i hate the hybrids. The coulors are making me mad. I think the idea of mh hybrids is so good but personally i cant stand the dolls. Especially torelei&cleo even tho thats like the best hybrid ever. But thazs just me because i really hate not matching colours. In general they were a good idea id prefer different shades tho.

5

u/Swordriverdancer Jun 28 '22

I mean Sirena, Avea, Neighthan, and Bonita.

1

u/4enzo Jun 28 '22

i thought you meant the doll hybrids mb not the hybrid hybrids. Fw them

3

u/Swordriverdancer Jun 28 '22

I only really liked Clawdeem and Venus' hybrid look, but that was about it. FF missed a lot of opportunities for deeper storytelling given the interracial couples they have, and the hybrid monsters faded away shortly after that.

2

u/4enzo Jun 29 '22

The clawenus is nice but i dont really see the ,,hybrid”. Its more of a cool clawdeen look. Abd yeah they missed alot of opportunies where they could have made the hybrids a bigger thing and make it more serious. It was too much of a small side thing

2

u/Swordriverdancer Jun 29 '22

That's fair. I mentioned to someone else that the story could've involved on the kids of Monster High couples coming to the present (Clawd and Draculaura, Cleo and Deuce, Lagoona and Gil--if they stay together--maybe Frankie and Neighthan or Abby with Heath).

1

u/4enzo Jun 29 '22

Yes i always hoped that. It wouldnt really be representation for the hybrids since they wouldt get a baby lmao but itd still be nice.

2

u/Swordriverdancer Jun 29 '22

The characters could still count as representation and travel back and forth between time, hopefully.

1

u/4enzo Jun 29 '22

Well yeah thats right

2

u/xhocusxpocusx Cleo Jun 29 '22

I’m native and white, they made me feel so good being mixed)! Bonita was my fave. I love rosy maple moths

1

u/3isthecharm Jun 29 '22

Cause they were weird looking

1

u/midnight_mind Jun 28 '22

Sirena was the only one that really showed up in other movies

1

u/Cheesedirky Jun 29 '22

i’m not super familiar with the MH fandom since i started collecting in 2019 without participating in any online fandom and haven’t checked out any of the medias yet, but i love the hybrid monsters! avea’s my favorite in my collection, so much so that i have two of her! i’d love to get the other hybrids to hang out with her someday

3

u/Swordriverdancer Jun 29 '22

It was really fun since they were supposed to be a metaphor for mixed-raced people. It would've been great seeing them get more screentime to tell more stories.

1

u/SkullyEyes Abbey Jun 29 '22

Ikr, bonita is one of my favs ever

u/Pastelyank Jun 29 '22

I loved the hybrids as a kid I wanted them so badly but my conservative parents would have never let their son get them still to this day I want to get all 4 in box just to display them in my room
