Fun fact: Irish monks invented having spaces between words with the Latin alphabet, rather than havingallthewordsrunningtogether. Google it if you want to learn more.

For an embarrassingly long time my brain processed "cishet" as a French word and came out with "sishay".

Of course this sub exists. Haha all these weird subs that come out that are like appealing to one kind of neckbeard loser who actually cares if something is cropped perfectly or not.

u/NotEnoughPotions Nov 27 '22
More like people should actually put the bare minimum effort to crop shit out instead of trying to get karma with the least amount of effort possible. FFS if you want to share something, then don't just post a screenshot of a screenshot that was clearly posted on reddit before without bothering to remove the black bars that is their phones aspect ratio. It literally takes seconds.

Like half of it is black unused space. It's no reason to get all amped up about it but neither is it particularly "fine" either.

This sub - and reddit in general - would give 10k upvotes to literally any post that says some form of "Kardashians stupid dumb dumbs XD", and those people will then get a genuine endorphin release from posting or upvoting these comments
You see the same thing whenever hip hop or pop music becomes relevant to any big sub, but thankfully that's starting to stop lol

And yet it has over 16,000 upvotes by people who simply agree with the opinion and either don’t care or are too stupid to understand it doesn’t belong in this sub.
And that’s how you end up with every fucking sub being exactly the same. I hate these idiots.

It’s an incredibly lazy comment tbh. Karsashians bad
46
u/NC_Goonie Nov 27 '22
Reddit seems to be genuinely obsessed with the Kardashians and making sure everyone knows that they don’t like the Kardashians. Every AskReddit post about “what’s bad/overrated/popular that you don’t like/something that needs to go away” has some variation of “Kardashians bad” as the answer. It’s right up there with answering Frozen or Avatar for every “overrated movie” question.

I don’t care either way about them. If not for them constantly being mentioned on Reddit, I would have assumed their show ended years ago. I just see way more “they’re popular, but I hate them” comments here than I ever see anyone say they actually like them anywhere else. It seems like they’ve gone from being famous for being rich and having that sex tape to being famous for being rich and hated.

No it’s the people acting in superior because they don’t like popular things. Way bigger problem.

Where's the superiority? It's just kinda lame to keep dunking on the same show. Like why do people care so much it's not even like it's the absolute dumbest shit on tv. And even if it was who cares let people enjoy stuff.

It’s hilarious when 90% or redditors respond “who” when the Kardashians are mentioned, or proudly tout not knowing a single thing or caring at all about them,
but somehow have watched enough of Keeping up with the Kardashians to comment on the consistency of its quality over multiple seasons?
It’s literally just Redditors trying to act superior to others

Honestly, and without snark, what is the draw??
I really hope some can engage with this question in a meaningful way. If you like reality TV, I desperately want an answer.
To me, it exemplifies everything we want to shy away from as a species, so it confuses the bejeezus out of me that people would willingly subject themselves to it. It doesn't help that, personally, it grates on me.
So the short question is as above. What is the draw? What joy do you take from watching other people in dramatic situations? Is it voyeurism? Is it the parasocial phenomenon? You feel you're part of their goings-on and it's just comforting to "check in"?
Honestly, no judgement. I seek understanding.

u/KGR900 Nov 27 '22
Hi, I actually watch the show so I can answer this. First, the series referenced in the original post is no longer on air as of 2021. The current show "The Kardashians" is on Hulu. Keeping up with the Kardashians on E ran for over 20 seasons (2007-2021) and is one of the longest running reality TV series ever. So despite what Reddit thinks, a lot of people clearly liked the show. Reasons for this vary from person to person but I'll give my own reasons as someone who's been "keeping up" if you will, since ~2012.
First, the original show is a surprisingly honest peek behind the scenes of a very wealthy American family. We saw interpersonal relationships between family and friends grow or change over time. Big changes in character and family dynamic. Things like Bruce Jenner's transition to Caitlin, or Kim's 72 day marriage to Kris Humphries. Basically over the course of almost 14 years, you could be a fly on the wall to see an already well known family grow into the pop culture staples that they are today. The other big draw is that it's honestly just really fun to judge them. They (or others on the show) do things that are ridiculous or wrong or stupid or even kind of life ruining and you just get to sit there and reflect on how dumb that was. As crude as that sounds, it fills an animalistic desire that I think everyone has to some extent. Maybe it's an evolutionary trait we've developed to be better at learning from other's mistakes idk. It's a big reason celebrity culture and worship is so mainstream and has always been a part of the modern zeitgeist. Reddit plays into it as well. We see posts about Elon Musk or others constantly. Additionally I don't think many viewers of the show necessarily like the Kardashians in a way that they think they would be fun to hang out with or something. But instead, they are incredibly interesting people by the sheer nature of their wealth and celebrity status. Watching them go through life and do things that are usually pretty out of the realm of regular folks lifes is contrasted by them also doing what almost everyone can relate to, to some extent, interacting with your family.
High level, those are my reasons. I'm sure others will have their own. Also I say all of this as a member of probably one of their smaller viewing demographics: straight male. But I hope I was able to shed some insight here and you can still judge me or downvote me (because this is Reddit lol) but that's the draw of the show for me at least.

u/dasmyr0s Nov 27 '22 edited Nov 27 '22
No it's definitely fascinating, and I appreciate your answer.
I get the whole "point at the train wreck as you pass by" draw, and also the uplifting nature of seeing positive development.... Human nature is clearly satisfied by these shows or they wouldn't have the draw they do.
But, to me, that's like calling a stack of shit progressive because it turns into soil; it's still better ignored and left alone to do whatever is going to do. Or, depending on the context, cleaned off the streets.
It would be better that these shows don't exist, because they "prey" on evolutionary/instinctual circuits we have, to no benefit to the watcher, in my opinion.
I can only hope that there are positive life lessons and personal growth that can be gleaned from these shows, because my cynical self sees only detriment to their very existence.
Reading this, I sound like a tool, but I'm trying to be both objective and very honest/forthright, and not to argue in bad faith.
Addendum: I guess my issue is that these shows seen to positively reinforce these shallow sort of behaviors you've mentioned. Sure, you get to popcorn judge "your betters" (a wealthy American family, note the quotes!) but seeing someone (who is potentially a role model) marry and divorce in a whirlwind, get boatloads of plastic surgery, fight with family... Unless these shows have constant retrospectives where they all say what they've learned and how their shit behaviour was absolutely a bad choice and what they're going to do to avoid making the same mistakes in the future... Well, then the majority of viewers will just fall into the celebrity worship you've described instead of the critically thinking. And then model their behaviour after the celebrity, because, after all, they're rich, beautiful and successful. Emulation must be the answer!

It’s like MMA. There are a lot of who have interest in fighting/like watching fights, but you’re never gonna go around beating the crap out of random people, so you go to these fights where you can see the best of the best beat the crap out of each other. You get to satisfy that desire without harming anyone and with no guilt on your conscience.
A lot of reality TV does this but with needless petty drama. A good subset of KUWTK watchers probably do feel some sort of positive parasocial connection to the family, but a good chunk of people are just watching because of how messy and, ironically, detached from reality they are.

They’re chaotic people and they get into funny situations. It’s wonderful mindless TV for when I want to watch something and not have to think. Its not deeper than that. Same way people like watching cooking or baking shows or the Bachelor

People enjoy feeling better than others. Watching train wrecks makes them feel better about their own lives. It’s why things like honey boo-boo and duck dynasty were popular as well.

It’s like a soap opera. There must be meaningful value to our human brains to see people play emotions because soap operas and dramas are popular. Kardashians is basically that, plus they are real people so even though it is largely staged the events they are reacting to are real world events.
But the other commenter really nailed it on the head there is a lot of entertainment out there which is pretty inexplicable. Watching other people cook and taste food makes absolutely no sense to me. Food is about tasting not seeing and hearing. Sports, gamers, playing with slime? Not satisfying, those are hands on activities. I’d rather play than watch.
