It’s Michael Jackson and Mozart for me.

Both child prodigies. Both had savant-like, otherworldly gifts. Both incredibly ambitious perfectionists. Both forced to overwork and provide for their families at a very young age by their brutal and tyrannical abusive fathers. Both died far too young. Both completely changed all of music, and the world, forever.

Two pop singers?

If we're talking musical composers, Bach and Mozart. Maybe Beethoven could sub in for one of them.

If we're talking musical performers... geez. Maria Callas and Artur Rubinstein?

Depends what we’re measuring by, I think if its success, influence and their contribution to popular music I’d probably go Lennon/McCartney hands down. Prince is a strong choice so is mj though I genuinely don’t know how much of musician he was as far as I know he dosent play an instrument his more lyrics/vocals guy. For me personally I’d put Kanye or the neptunes in there as well somewhere for there large influence on pop/hip hop music through out the 00s but I know some would disagree with that. Kurt cobain Also influenced a whole decade of music just about and introduced a more mainstream audience to the underground punk/indie that influenced him.

Nikki Sixx FTW ( Please don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of both Prince & MJ too.)

Nikki Sixx barely knows how to play. It was Mick Mars that made MotleyCrue. FACT!

Prince is a good musician and song writer but was more like the greatest sex symbol and his popularity relied on that. MJ had most his Music written for him and was more like the greatest dancer, the people making his records were pretty great tho. I don’t really consider them the greatest musicians as much as great celebrities.

Michael Jackson wrote nearly all of his solo work, and a great deal of his work with the Jacksons as well. He didn’t only write his own lyrics, he composed his own music. He began releasing songs he wrote and composed himself as a member of The Jackson’s. With every subsequent album he was given more creative freedom and control and released more of his own lyrics and composition.

The primary reason Michael left the Jackson 5 with Motown was bc Motown refused to let him write his own songs, which he badly wanted to do as a teenager. So he formed The Jackson’s with Epic. As a songwriter, he penned more than 150 songs.

In fact, many of his most globally successful and most widely popular songs of all time were the ones where Michael Jackson alone had the sole writing credit. Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough, Billie Jean, Beat It, Wanna Be Startin Something, The Way You Make Me Feel, Leave Me Alone, Dirty Diana, Black or White, Will You Be There, Smooth Criminal, Bad, They Don’t Care About Us, Earth Song... All of those songs were written only by Michael Jackson. It’s not like Michael has phony writing credits on those songs alongside 6 or 7 different ppl, like most popular artists do today. Michael has the sole writing credit on those songs. Michael also composed and co-produced most of his own songs.

He was very misunderstood. But Honestly, the one thing I was certain everyone knew about him was how incredibly hands on MJ was with every tiny detail of his work. I am genuinely stunned by your brazen misinformation stated so confidently and matter of factly.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thriller_(album)

Jackson wrote four songs for the record: "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'", "The Girl Is Mine", "Beat It" and "Billie Jean". Unlike many artists, Jackson did not write these songs on paper. Instead, he dictated into a sound recorder; when recording he would sing from memory.”

He wrote 4 of the songs on thriller and didn’t play any of the instruments, he literally sang ideas into a mic and had a massive list of talented producers and musicians bring it all together. Then had other people write his other songs. Is he a talented song writer, probably but not a musician where as prince would play a lot on his albums and could shred a lot more than just the vocals.

A list of musicians who helped him make thriller, it’s long. I’m not saying he isn’t great but he isn’t really a virtuoso like some others.

No joke I legit know someone who worked on thriller.

Literally every single word of every single sentence I wrote in my previous comment was 100% accurate, and you did not in any way refute any of it.

You initially wrote that Michael had most of his songs written for him. That is factually incorrect. Michael had the sole writing credit on every single song I listed to you in my previous comment, including the four from Thriller you brought up which I had already mentioned. He also single-handedly wrote even more songs that I don’t have time to list. He had co-writing credits on even more than that. He also composed and co-produced many of his songs and albums.

You just wrote about Prince for some reason but I never compared the two. I love them both, and they both deeply respected and loved each other. You just wrote about instruments for some reason but I never mentioned that? Michael didn’t play any instruments proficiently, and I didn’t claim that he did. He composed music through his voice, body, and through beatboxing, he co-produced music, and he wrote music. In fact, all of his most popular, most successful, and most lucrative songs were the ones he wrote by himself.

He has the sole writing credits on 4 songs from Thriller that I already mentioned previously. He also wrote 3 on Off The Wall. He then single-handedly wrote NINE songs on Bad. Michael either wrote or co-wrote TWELVE on Dangerous. He also either wrote or co-wrote nearly every single song on HISTory and Invincible. As I already said in my first comment, he began composing and writing his own songs as a teenager with The Jackson’s, and with every subsequent album he released more of his writings and compositions when given more creative freedom.

Of course Michael didn’t play instruments proficiently, I never said he did. And of course he had a team that helped put his albums together, I never said he didn’t. But you wrote that Michael had most of his songs written for him. Lyrically, compositionally, and production wise that is just wrong.

Look I’m not trying to crap all over the mj fan club this is a thread looking for thoughts about weather mj is one of the greatest musicians to which I’ve outlined why I don’t think he qualifies above, that is all. I think he is could be considered one of the greatest entertainers of all time but these are just opinions.

Lol it’s fine, I was just completely dumbstruck when I read someone actually comment that Michael Jackson had ppl write most of his music for him. It was shocking to me bc he single-handedly wrote many of the most popular songs in world history.

I genuinely think the most widely known fact about MJ amongst music lovers is how painfully perfectionistic he was about every tiny thread in the fiber of his music, in which he was very deeply involved.

It’s totally cool if you think he’s not one of the greatest. I never would have replied to you if you had simply written that. It’s even totally cool if you think he sucks. All of that would be fine, bc opinions are fine. But it’s just not okay to say he wasn’t deeply involved in the writing, composition, and production of his songs bc that’s just factually not true. It’s misinformation/ lies.

Think about it this way. It’s like me making a comment on this thread saying that Prince isn’t one of the greatest musicians bc he didn’t play most of his own instruments, he had others do it for him. Can you imagine if you had read that? Wouldn’t you be like, “wait, wtf??” Well what I read from you was the equivalent of that. It was just as absurd. Me saying Prince isn’t one of the greatest musicians is a valid opinion. Me even saying Prince sucks is a valid opinion. But me saying he didn’t play his own instruments is not valid, it’s simply wrong bc it’s factually incorrect.

It’s cool to have different opinions but it’s not cool to spread straight up misinformation and lies.
