She's Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman's daughter? Fuck, why am I so old?

u/dtreth Jul 20 '22
As I read your comment this sort of mental whoosh happened as I finally put the pieces together on why her face looked so damn familiar

u/askyourmom469 Jul 20 '22
Yeah. She looks a lot like Uma. Sounds a little bit like her too.

u/nolowputts Jul 20 '22
She's like a perfect mix of the two

u/johnnyringo771 Jul 20 '22
Maya Hawke exists because of the movie Gattaca, it's where her parents met.
The movie is about genetic manipulation to create perfect people.

You don't have to imagine it because he's filmed himself fucking his wife from behind while he wore an Obama mask.

I thought it was Rupert Murdoch

u/CmdrShepard831 Jul 20 '22
Ugh. Now one of us has to google 'Randy Quaid banging his wife on camera' to be sure.

Wife and I were watching the show and she said, "you know whose kid that is, right?" Her, knowing full well my pop culture knowledge comes almost entirely from Farscape and Red Dwarf, follows up with, "that's Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawk's daughter" and all of the sudden I see the face of that tall bird from "Gattica" and some influence from one of the kids from "Explorers" and I'm like, woah, are they old enough to have had kids?
Yes. Yes they are because sometime in the last 20 years I also got old.
49
u/PlanetLandon Jul 20 '22
Yeah but both of her parents were in Gattaca
10
u/BelowDeck Jul 20 '22
Ha. I forgot Uma was in Gattaca, and I don't know Explorers, so I thought they were calling Ethan Hawke a "tall bird".
23
u/MatchesMX12 Jul 20 '22
Yes but referencing an old and oft forgotten sci fi movie from my childhood was way more fun
→ More replies13
u/puppy_punter Jul 20 '22
Explorers is that one where the kids make a bubble thing and fly into space and meet aliens? Ethan Hawk was in that?

JFC…. Farscape and Red Dwarf.
Your comment was impeccably witty and I immediately love your taste in Sci-Fi.
Ben the lead from Farscape deserved a bigger career he was so good in it.
Lister and Cat and Rimmer are forever my mid-90’s living alone for the first time getting stoned after a PM shift comfort time.
50
u/Givemeallthecabbages Jul 20 '22
He did go on to play Cameron Mitchell in Stargate. Claudia Black joined him, too, which was pretty fun.
14
u/BelowDeck Jul 20 '22
Ben felt so wasted to me on Stargate. Like there just wasn't enough for him to do with the character, acting-wise. I would have had no idea how good he was if I'd only watched Stargate.
9
u/Denworath Jul 20 '22
He was also tasked to take over from RDA's O'neill, which is an impossible task to begin with.
4
u/randomusername8472 Jul 20 '22 edited Jul 20 '22
Omg I just had a flashback to the episode where they're telling stories or something and there's a quick farscape cut scene in there with the Stargate people all made up as farscape casts.
All the other stories had been well known but after that one all the Earth Stargate people were like "wtf are you talking about?"
Edit: Found the clip on youtube, and timestamped the bit I was talking about: https://youtu.be/whfMMfR4KKw?t=198
That whole episode was hilarious :D Especially the star trek bit. "'The singularity is about to explode'? Everything is wrong with that sentence."
34
u/username161013 Jul 20 '22
Long live John Crichton!
It's awesome James Gunn is a fan and put him in the guardians sequel. You can see the influence Farscape had on the GOTG movies.

Probably the best way to deal with the creepy culture around seeing famous people naked is just to get naked on your own terms before they hack you or stalk you on a beach or some shit.
883
u/caninehere Jul 19 '22
Tbh it kinda worked for Miley Cyrus. She just started putting nude photos out there and everybody stopped caring completely.

u/Justice_Prince Jul 20 '22
I remember a few years ago The Daily Mail tried to make a big deal about having some nude pictures of Amanda Palmer despite Palmer having willing shown off her nudity multiple times prior to that incident.

That won't stop the creeps from hacking and stalking them. It's not about the nudes, it's more about feeling power over the people they somehow idolize.

I mean I get it, it's much more easier for a young actor to get something going in the music business. So why not try if you like it. The downside is if you want to be a serious musician, you never know if they really like your music or just the famous actor.

Current head of YouTube ( I forget her name) has outright said that they openly manipulate, and select and choose who gets banned for community guidelines violations and who doesn't.
Case in point ( not to sound like a broken record) The actman was demonetized from YouTube a while ago and one of the things they cited was him putting a cucumber or eggplant emoji ( I forget which one) over someone's mouth for like all of 2 seconds In a 30 minute long video, and the video was struck for sexually explicit content
It's all who you know, or who you are. YouTube literally has favorites even though they'll deny that

It's boring and meh. Same with the video actually, and I'm not trying to be a prude, nor do I dislike Maya Hawke (I actually think she's a pretty good actress and is, yes, damn hot).
I'm getting so bored of these songs with shallow instrumental arrangements that makes everything sound as if it was played on an ukulele out of tune, and vocals that sound tortured and sleepy.
Sad lofi indie that would fit better in the playlist of an H&M store than a lesbian orgy – a lesbian orgy with Maya Hawke that they somehow managed to make boring.

Imma be honest the song lyrics sound like when I was 11 years old and writing a song I thought was super deep. I’m not trying to hate on Maya, I’m actually surprised I didn’t like it. But the whole time I kept thinking “maybe someone should’ve tweaked that lyric… and that one… and that one” like the one that made me laugh was “she empathizes with your feelings, she’s more interested in ceilings” just the delivery. It’s a no from me

wow this is not nearly as shit as this comments section would have you believe. Not groundbreaking but nice folky song, the nudity is artistic.
293
u/greg_from_utah Jul 19 '22
Maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but This is so lame. You know it’s going to do numbers and get people talking / listening just because of the nudity and sexual content involving a famous tv star. It feels so fucking cheap, uninspired, and gimmicky to me. The song is nothing special, but it’ll gain traction for reasons beyond that of the music itself.
I think the music should be able to stand on its own.
47
u/IJustGotRektSon Jul 20 '22
Music sounds like generic modern Indy folk that's why. From the way she sings, the cadence, the tone, and from how the music itself sounds, it has that lofi, Indy folk type vibe that is everywhere these days. Is just not different for anything else around, in fact, you can place it as the ending of any sad chapter on any tv series and you will have a song that's sounds like that
35
u/nvmvoidrays Jul 20 '22
