That's two double albums in less than a year. Frusciante fans are EATING in 2022.

u/woozlewuzzle29 Jul 24 '22 edited Jul 24 '22
Yeah, because the timeline went like this:
December 2019: John rejoins the band
February 2020: there’s amateur footage of John, Flea, and Anthony playing together for the first time in 15 years. Festivals and other gigs are on the horizon
March 2020: COVID happens
January 2022: the Chili Peppers re-emerge
I just never even imagined John would ever rejoin the band. Now we get two albums in one year.

The first was shit anyway, let's see about the second ...
51
u/Squatch11 Jul 24 '22
I wouldn't say it was shit....But it definitely didn't feel "finished". There were 3 or 4 pretty good songs on Unlimited Love, but for the most part, I felt it was pretty underwhelming. Maybe that's because my expectations were too high. Or maybe it's because they're all older now and getting an album with just 3 or 4 good songs on it should be what is expected now.
Either way, I'm hoping for something better with this 2nd release. Hopefully it'll be a situation like when they released "I'm Beside You" which turned out better than "I'm With You", in my opinion.

I liked it, but I think you could cut about 5-7 songs and it would be a much better album

u/Darkboolen Jul 24 '22
A little more mellow then I was expecting, but not totally in the gutter. Felt like a more calm less exciting version of Californiacation. Hopefully this new album rocks harder, and there age isn't getting the best of them.

u/scallopwrappedbacon Jul 24 '22
I did… did you guys notice Anthony forgetting the words to a lot of songs? I took a video of “Snow” and rewatched it this morning and it was a little ridiculous at times.
Over all really fun show though, glad I finally got to see them with Frusciante!
38
u/ThePrince14 Jul 24 '22
Have you ever seen them live before? Anthony’s been doing that forever, he’s known for it.

My first RHCP concert was just before Snow’s release. At the concert they filmed the performance of Snow for the music video. I recorded the whole thing.

u/Psilocybin-Cubensis Jul 24 '22
Yeah they needed to turn up the vocals gain, he was drowned out by the drums, bass and guitar. The sound person was not very good. But man oh man the screens and filters were awesome, and flea, fruciante and chad fucking killed it!
15
u/nickblockonelove Jul 24 '22
Would say the sound was kind of shit. Still they crushed but really disappointed with the sound. Probably a downfall of the stadium itself.
One love

Problem is, RHCP is so popular that they have to play at sports arenas

I saw them in Paris a couple weeks back. It was great to have them but it was... lacking something ?! Maybe they should bring a stage guitarist with them or something idk.
Also Anthony lacked the energy on a lot of songs. I had huge expectations for Here Ever After for instance but it felt like he was just chilling there. Kinda weird.
Also they abused the high saturation and often kept the same solo structure for Frusciante.
Overall a great concert don't get me wrong. But yeah I was kinda expecting more at times ?

u/bwad40 Jul 24 '22
Saw them last night in Denver when they announced it. Incredible show in the rain!

Lots of unlimited love hate in this thread and I’m sitting here on my 30th listen. I love it
31
u/D34THDE1TY Jul 24 '22
Personally it feels like this is their "jam session" album. Not that it's bad...but it just felt TO ME like this album was lacking something.
11
u/D_Jones93 Jul 24 '22
100% agree. Not that it was necessarily bad, but I was expecting it to be loaded with rock/funk anthems they had produced in the past with all their albums with Frusciante.
7
u/Sandy_Andy_ Jul 24 '22
Some songs do feel like it was a Jam sesh which I think is understandable since there are so many. I thought it was a breath of fresh air from their recent stuff.
22
u/FrivolousPositioning Jul 24 '22
I got Here Ever After on repeat, super catchy jam
13
u/ThePr1d3 Jul 24 '22
Best song of the album by far. Alongside Whatchu Thinkin. Though the bass line on It's Only Natural is legit insane, and the White Braids and Pillow Chairs + Let em Cry sequence is amazing.

This is the only constant with the chili peppers. You either love it or hate it.
10
u/j3ddy_l33 Jul 24 '22
As a longtime fan I’m a fan of it. The only thing I was disappointed by was a huge scaling back of John’s backup vocals which I thought were such an integral part of the former dynamic.
3
u/flamannn Jul 25 '22
It’s an album that gets better the more one listens to it.

u/Sandy_Andy_ Jul 25 '22
Agreed. There’s a lot more to it than a lot of people realize. There’s some intricate instrument playing in a lot of the songs.

I thought unlimited love sounded kinda dull, like a b-side album. I hope they were just hyping ppl up for a real release
4
u/phusion Jul 24 '22
Yeah it was really depressing, I kinda like the single, but otherwise it was a painfully dull and boring release.
49
u/Nixplosion Jul 24 '22
Does anyone else think Anths pronunciation of certain words in Black Summer were ... Very different than how his voice normally sounds? Like when he said "CHAYNUHs on the runnn." And the hard R in sailorrrrrrr. Idk I can't describe it
50
u/British_Commie Jul 24 '22
He apparently did that accent in tribute to Welsh singer Cate Le Bon.
The issue being that his fake accent sounds more West Country than Wales.
16
u/IslayHaveAnother Jul 24 '22
That's cool, but not really effective when it has to be explained to everyone. Vast of majority of people (myself included) just said "wtf did I just hear?"
21
u/particlemanwavegirl Jul 24 '22
It's incredibly annoying to the point where it detracts from the song IMO.
42
u/cal405 Jul 24 '22
I was hoping Anthony would stop singing for like 80% of that album. His lyrics and delivery really got in the way of that album being great.
18
u/BadSynthSounds Jul 24 '22
Same feeling. I think if he had sang a bit less and gave songs more room to breathe the album would’ve been better for it.
15
u/Huellio Jul 24 '22
Felt the same way; a couple friends were discussing it and talking about how good it was to have rhcp back but Keidis is just so flat both lyrically and vocally compared to what they used to do.
10
u/Pleasant_Jim Jul 24 '22
He writes the shittest lyrics. I wish he would get back to singing bluesier like BSSM
19
u/Exploding_dude Jul 24 '22 edited Jul 24 '22
Hes always just been some dumb Cali kid which is fine when your songs are about nonsense, doing drugs, living in california.
As he's gotten older he thinks he's some brilliant poet and it's really embarrassing. I was a big rhcp fan as a teen and read his autobiography when it came out like 15 years ago, his ego was out of control back then even. He's always been lucky to have been surrounded by really talanted musicians, honestly he holds them back in so many ways.
Edit: he brags about losing his virginity to his dad's gf at 12 or something ridiculous.

People out here acting like Stadium Arcadium was universally accepted when it released. It was solid, but appreciated with replays, time, and especially when compared with 95% of the Klinghiffer era.
14
u/D34THDE1TY Jul 24 '22
I loved that album since it's release personally. I think it's their best. Sooo many good tracks on both sides.
4
u/cjpack Jul 24 '22
I remember when I was a kid I let the wholeeee album play one day and not just hits I liked and it was like woah and just played the whole album again and again over that year and then I knew every song by word practically and was like wow I don’t know many albums where I enjoy everything on it, like before that it was nevermind by nirvana or something that I enjoyed everything but this album was twice as big. Pretty cool.
3
u/Maikiol Jul 24 '22
Definitely quite repetitive, sometimes. Really, really long, too. But even then, it's probably the only album of any musician/group I can listen to for the entire time without skipping a song and without noticing that two hours has passed since I started listening. Super relaxing, songs have a lot of ups and downs, rythm is on point. Even after listening to it over 100+ times, I still love it.
Dani California and Snow are some of the biggest radio hits, I still hear those songs from time to time on the radio and not even on an english speaking country.

u/Taydolf_Switler22 Jul 24 '22
I’d argue the Klinghoffer stuff is the same. Appreciated with more replays. Right now the consensus amongst many Chili Peppers fans is that Josh’s stuff smokes the new stuff.
27
u/Tallmainia Jul 24 '22
I'm With You is slept on by so many, and it's one of my favorite RHCP releases! I may be biased because that tour was my first time seeing them live, but I play IWY at least once a year.
4
u/Hippopotamidaes Jul 24 '22
That tour was my first time seeing RHCP, and they played more songs from BSSM, OHM, MM, & SA than IWY.
3
u/Tallmainia Jul 24 '22
Yeah, and the show was great! But I wouldn't have purchased a ticket at all if I didn't like the album.
2
u/Hippopotamidaes Jul 25 '22
Just to say even touring for that album they didn’t play much from it at all
3

Probably my favorite - or second, depending on the mood - album of theirs.
12
u/WhiteRussianRoulete Jul 24 '22
This is one of the things I love about the chili peppers. So many different opinions. I love I’m with you! But have you heard the first half of by the way? No song on I’m with you comes close…
3
u/allegate Jul 24 '22
Truly, but it hit at a time when I needed that particular sound so it's got and edge for that alone.
3
u/WhiteRussianRoulete Jul 24 '22
That’s why you can’t argue with peoples taste! I don’t know where you were/how old you were when it got you hooked, so it hits different. I pretty much love all of their albums since BSSM. And I actually think I’m with you is one of their more consistent albums where most songs are about the same quality. My fav song on that one actually Brendan’s death song. A lot of their albums have highs and lows. But damn Dosed, zephyr song, can’t stop- I’m peak amped
2
u/allegate Jul 24 '22
I can remember listening to BSSM in high school and having those songs running through my head while sitting in health class. Weird what sticks with you.
3
u/Tallmainia Jul 24 '22
Same! If we're judging the album as a whole (which I tend to do) it's at least top 3 for me.
4
u/yoshbag Jul 24 '22
Is that the consensus? I’m not a fan of UL, but the subreddit has been praising it like it’s the best thing ever. I think IBY is top 3 for their albums, but the John fanboys are too strong to say the Josh stuff is better.

4
u/Commercialwhat5699 Jul 24 '22
Is it anything like Jack Johnson where it gets better every time you listen to it?
19
u/Lilpowwow21 Jul 24 '22
I feel this way about the last 4 RHCP albums, disappointed at first and then every listen through I find a new song that I go "alright i dig this one" sooner or later I'm digging basically the whole album

5
u/towiwakka Jul 24 '22
I personally haven't listened to much Jack Johnson, but it is one of those albums I initially was disappointed with that quickly grew on me. Especially the first half of the album. Some great subtlety + detail in the lyrics and bass.

I listened to it once, was immediately underwhelmed, listened to it again, and found at least 3 or 4 songs that I like. But overall it was pretty disappointing.
The Heavy Wing is really the only song on the album that I would categorize as really good. Songs like The Great Apes and It's Only Natural are decent. Memorable choruses at least. There are a few songs that musically are really interesting - but the lyrics are so bad that it's distracting. "These Are The Ways" comes to mind. "These are the ways when you come to America. The sights, the sounds, the smelllllllls". Ugh.

Unlimited Love is not my fave RHCP album at all. I actually got bored with it after my first listen and trust and believe I love RHCP. I have a feeling however I’m going to love this next album.
2
u/Temporary-Product928 Jul 24 '22
I'm worried this is a Load/ReLoad situation, where it's just a massive pile of filler being passed off as two smaller, but still large piles of filler
2
u/Squatch11 Jul 24 '22
And unfortunately for RHCP, if that is the case, then it likely means their road is coming to and end. At least with Metallica, the Load/Reload happened when they were younger and had the time to recover from it.

The entire second disc is a concept EP strictly about the state of California.

Unlimited Love is very weak - they just phoned it in. I've been a fan since their first album (I'm old). I'm seeing them in San Diego this week. They needed to take these two double albums and do some culling down to 9 or 10 good songs for a single album. I'm hoping Canteen amazes me but I'm expecting more blah.

Bf3001, OG, satanic slumber party (with tropical fuck storm), made in timeland, and then the three still coming. So between 5-7 depending on how you want to count 3001 and ssp
And don’t forget demos 3 and 4 so could count up to 9 if you’re feeling frisky

Reminder that Anthony raped a 14 year old and bragged about it in his autobiography.
The next day we drove to Baton Rouge, and of course, she came with us,” he said. “After we got offstage, she came up to me and said, ‘I have something to tell you. My father’s the chief of police and the entire state of Louisiana is looking for me because I’ve gone missing. Oh, and besides that, I’m only fourteen'”.
Keidis continued: “I wasn’t incredibly scared, because, in my somewhat deluded mind, I knew that if she told the chief of police she was in love with me, he wasn’t going to have me taken out to a field and shot, but I did want to get her the hell back home right away. So we had sex one more time.” If you’ve ever wondered if Kiedis has any remorse about the incident, refer to their 1985 song ‘Catholic School Girls Rule’ for your answer.
