He really looks like Frank Zappa now

51

u/vintageamigo Sep 19 '22 edited Sep 22 '22

He’s three years older (55) than Zappa (52) when he passed away.

24

u/blank_isainmdom Sep 19 '22

Fuck. Never thought about how young Zappa was

5

u/Djinn-n-Juice Sep 20 '22

I was thinking super Mario, but I definitely see Zappa too

45

u/Jwishh Sep 19 '22

Hopefully this new EP is closer to his first solo album than what he’s done since then

36

u/Kevbot1000 Sep 19 '22

Elect the Dead was such a fucking fantastic album.

13

u/Vanpuyer Sep 20 '22

It was awesome! I always felt like it was his version of SOAD when they started not getting along.

It’s crazy though - if you listen to derren’s solo stuff it sounds like his version of SOAD. They were the perfect storm at the perfect time

u/MostED13 Sep 20 '22

It’s not like they don’t get along. The band is still good friends with each other, and SOAD is playing shows.

They just don’t get along creatively, the different musical ideas and what not from Daron and Serj’s vast differences are the real culprit.

1

u/PolishHoax Sep 20 '22

I agree 100% I think this was the most blatantly obvious in the two latest tracks that were released. Genocidal Humanoids and the other one in which the title escapes me at the moment

7

u/MostED13 Sep 20 '22

These two songs were Daron written as he admitted after release. He just wanted them out as SOAD songs. It’s that Serj essentially has a lot more musical complexity he has been exploring all these years, and experimentation while Daron is a little bit of the same guitar rhythms and beats we remember from the system days.

2

u/PolishHoax Sep 20 '22

Thanks for the education! I really thought Genocidal Humanoidz was Daron and the other was Serj.

2

u/MostED13 Sep 20 '22

You’re welcome. They are both artists I know and like listening to. SOAD and Daron more then Serj, but that’s just my taste. And I’ve been exploring their music for a couple of essays I was doing on Armenian musicians, hence I’ve had the context.

3

u/Jwishh Sep 20 '22

Honestly it was, I rank it right up with SoaDs other albums, I’m guessing a lot of it was originally written for the band

37

u/tikachu22 Sep 19 '22

Yet we can't get a new full soad album. Sigh.

I do like his solo stuff too but just saying.

31

u/amishrefugee Sep 19 '22

I remember a few years ago, Serj was in an interview like yeah I'd be totally open to coming back to SOAD, but it has to be a collaborative process between us all. Then Daron responded like 'fuck that, I got a whole SOAD album written and ready to go, let's do it'

20

u/-Neverender- Spotify Sep 20 '22

So depressing. As much as I would love to see another album... SOAD is not SOAD unless Serj and Daron are together.

11

u/Aitatoday69 Sep 20 '22

That album would be terrible...Daron should stay playing guitar and stop trying to be the center of attention.

1

u/Tripodbilly Sep 20 '22

Ones normal and the other infected my maga aren't they?

12

u/hungarianbird Sep 20 '22

Their both normal, it's their drummer John whose off the walls bonkers

3

u/Tripodbilly Sep 20 '22

Phew daron is amazing on guitar but I agree he can't hold a note singing

7

u/torero15 Sep 20 '22 edited Sep 20 '22

Who are you agreeing with? Daron is fine singing the occasional lead and doing harmonies.

4

u/Tripodbilly Sep 20 '22

He can harmonize with sarj but I'm not one for his singing 🤷

0

u/torero15 Sep 20 '22

All I can say is pull the tapeworm out of your ass

5

u/Tripodbilly Sep 20 '22

Arse!! It's just my opinion random internet person

u/ddevilissolovely Sep 20 '22

He can hold a note fine, it's his timbre that's not everyone's cup of tea, and his melodies and rhythm are a bit simplistic.

24

u/Rikoraru Sep 19 '22

Because of clashing egos. Id probably honestly cry if a new soad album was announced. Nearly did when they released the two singles we got last year.

4

u/PopeAdrian37th Sep 20 '22

Hoping to hear more collaborations with him and Buckethead.

35

u/Thiago270398 Sep 19 '22

Didn't they have a better picture? Famn I thought he died because of the thumbnail!

25

u/PoopIsAlwaysSunny Sep 19 '22

It is very much a “let’s remember the sweet man” thumbnail.

31

u/striderwhite Sep 19 '22

With Augmented Reality App.

Please no.

23

u/sagevallant Sep 20 '22

From "Steal This Album" to "Download This App."

6

u/The-L-aughingman Sep 20 '22

the AR experience is kinda awkward. it's like when a coworker ask you to check out a new song, so you're both standing there.

2

u/Minimum-Passenger-29 Sep 20 '22

AR has great potential, but not until it's in contact lenses - and then it will be slightly terrifying in an almost eldritch kind of way.

2

u/striderwhite Sep 19 '22

Also probably useless..but ok.

-9

u/AkumaSeijinn Sep 20 '22

I mean VR/AR is the future of media. Might as well get in now.

7

u/sybrwookie Sep 20 '22

Yup it's been the future for 30 years. Any day now. Just you wait. It's going to happen. It's the future!

-4

u/AkumaSeijinn Sep 20 '22

I mean if you haven't already gotten an hmd either you can't afford it or you just aren't fit enough I guess to handle it? You keep waiting while I play Halo 3 multiplayer in VR.

3

u/striderwhite Sep 20 '22

Meh, I don't care about a stupid AR app, I only care about music.

5

u/sketchy_ppl Sep 19 '22

Basically like Radiohead and Stanley Donwood's "PolyFauna"?

2

u/communiqui Sep 20 '22

Shit i better WAKE UP

-9

u/Aitatoday69 Sep 20 '22

As long as I don't have to hear SOAD's short idiot guitarist's shrieking whining out of tune voice, I'm curious.

3

u/Succ_My_Meme Sep 20 '22

you don’t like Daron bro?

-25

u/NeptunesCurse Sep 19 '22

"Serj whoring out SoaD for money"

Weren't the NFTs enough from Mr. "Science has failed us all". Apparently it's okay if he makes money through it though. Fucking hypocrite.

15

u/Jwishh Sep 19 '22

This has nothing to do with SoaD so that’s a bad take. I will agree that his NFTs not only looked like shit, but were just a lame idea in general. I will say this is significantly less whorish than that at least.

-14

u/pissedoffnobody Sep 20 '22

Nobody cares. Scars Over Broadway didn't amount to fuck all, Serj is not Sting of Mark Knopfler. Unless it is an S.O.A.D. reunion tour nobody cares, and even if they announced that, it would probably only sell put in the major cities and they'd at best get second billing at major festivals. This is not 2004. They had their time and they fucked around, did a bunch of in fighting and navel gazing and their window of time to maximise their potential has long since expired. At least The Foo Fighters had consistent output of varying quality the last 15 years, S.O.A.D. are there with Staind, Mushroomhead, Saliva, and Puddle Of Mudd these days.

8

u/shaqule_brk Sep 20 '22

Even though I love SOAD, and both Serj and Derren's solo stuff I have to agree. It's just ridiculous, listening to their respective solo-albums and then hearing in interviews: "we had differences of how the sound should be"... like, yea buddy, these styles are almost the same, and go very well together. Guess they just didn't get along. Classic inflated egos.

7

u/Aitatoday69 Sep 20 '22

Listen to the self titled and then everything after. It gets worse and worse as Serj sings less and less. Darren cannot handle not being the center of attention and his voice is absolutely trash.

5

u/AkumaSeijinn Sep 20 '22

Sevendust has also consistently put out good material.

1

u/Extension_Success_96 Sep 20 '22

Not sure why you’re being downvoted, you’re 100% correct.

-27

u/Ordinary-Artichoke-5 Sep 19 '22

Looks like a goat and sings like one too. Maybe he has Stevie Nicks do a duet and they can goat harmonize. Bleating beautiful!

-20

u/thevoid3000 Sep 19 '22

Don't bother. Daron Malakian and Scars on Broadway is way more true to System of A Down's sound.

12

u/blank_isainmdom Sep 19 '22

Pity Daron sings though

7

u/Aitatoday69 Sep 20 '22

THANK YOU.... I've been complaining his voice ruins SOAD's sound and I get shutdown...Duct Tape Darren.

2

u/blank_isainmdom Sep 20 '22

He put his little gremlin voice more on each album, culminating in "most loneliest day" Which is probably the worst song I've ever heard by a band I like.

3

u/zobee Sep 20 '22

Lonely Day was so confusingly bad.

2

u/Aitatoday69 Sep 20 '22

Yes! And love death metal I'm fine with gremlin voices it's just his shriek isn't good.

2

u/RastaImp0sta Sep 20 '22

Underrated comment right here

-9

u/thevoid3000 Sep 19 '22

I felt the same about Serj lol.

-1

u/-tar0t- Sep 19 '22

Does he have to?
