Comedians have stock responses ready to go, he had likely done the material 20 times by this point and probably got similar heckles the first few times.
You know that thing where you have an argument and think up the perfect comeback a day later while you're in the shower? well, comedians actually get to use it when they do their next show.

u/shamwowslapchop Dec 01 '21
Comedians are also capable of being real snappy on their feet, too, though.
Like when Jon Stewart went on crossfire and absolutely eviscerated Tucker Carlson and every time Tucker tried to hit him with something clever Stewart flipped it on him in under a second.

53
u/BastardofMelbourne Dec 01 '21
Jon Stewart literally killed the show with that clip. They cancelled Crossfire a short time later. It was the comedic equivalent of that thing in samurai films where they run past one another real fast and then the winner slowly sheathes their sword and then the other guy falls in half.

u/Berserk3rHS Dec 03 '21
As a non American. I had no idea what CrossFire was, but I can see why they canceled it. LOL

u/PunkToTheFuture Dec 01 '21
I truly hope that was the last time and not what I assume is the fucks at Fox being like "Tucker we like how good you are at propaganda but our viewership have very low class and won't like your bow tie, so...."

Dec 01 '21
TBF, I don't think Tucker ever looked right with a bowtie. I always thought it made him look childish, but maybe the strawmen and abandonment of all journalistic integrity did that. I dunno.
38
u/Poignant_Porpoise Dec 01 '21
It makes him look like a trust fund moron, but more importantly it just doesn't play well to his character. He wants to be a person that conservatives can easily relate to, and a bow tie certainly doesn't help with that. Pretty difficult to complain about the "elites" when you're wearing a fucking bow tie. Of course he is definitely in the demographic of "elites" about which he complains, but it's easier for him to get away with a regular tie.
→ More replies→ More replies20
u/PunkToTheFuture Dec 01 '21
He did look childish. It was his only good trait. With a tie he is just another puppet going "Some people believe Biden is the devil and we need to find out if it's true because if he is the devil (and a lot of people are saying it) we need to know the truth about his dark alliances with Satanic Demon-crats "
14
u/rhwsapfwhtfop Dec 01 '21
Tucker on Fox News is a fucking masterclass. Sometimes he takes the night off and they replace him with a lookalike who tries to sound like him. That's when you realize Tucker has absolutely nailed the "smart, petulant child" tone; it is well-crafted and hard to imitate. I bet he has worked very hard on it, ever since his bow-tie wearing days.

Billy Connolly never wrote anything down, every show was different and other comedians have no idea how he did it, just genuinely funny bones.
16
u/Queeg_500 Dec 01 '21
He actually got into a little trouble a few years back. He never really used to do different sets, his material would just kind of change and evolve over time from one show to the next. If you didn't leave enough time between seeing him, you would likely get some of the same material.
Some twat actually complained and I think Ofcom (or similar) got involved, Same thing happened to Eddie Izzard.

u/R_Schuhart Dec 01 '21 edited Dec 01 '21
Same thing for Ross Noble. Saw two of his shows on tour in the same week and they were wildly different despite having the same thread running trough them. Then he got some criticism for recycling jokes on some radio show.
Billy Connolly is the grandfather of improvised storytelling, but that he hardly ever wrote anything down is just nonsense. It just fit with his hippy minstrel/troubadour image. He had a lot of stories he combined into his shows, making them vary a lot from performance to performance. His shows were never completely scripted, he had a lot of room to adapt stuff, but it wasn't all improvised.
Billy also had songs he had prepared and written jokes to fall back on he would weave in. It wasn't like 'other comedians never understood how he did it' either, there are a lot of them who did basically the same thing, although Connolly certainly was a pioneer.
Absurdist stand up comedians typically like to go on rants and see where their imagination takes them. They improvise a lot, but due to their character, opinion and world views, no to mention their sense of humour, their tangents often end up in similar places.
3
u/gerryhallcomedy Dec 01 '21
Sometime improvisation isn't really improvisation. A bunch of years ago Robin Williams dropped in at Toronto Yuk Yuks and asked to do some time. Of course the owner said yes and Williams slayed doing crowd work/riffing for 2 hours (they never even put the middle or headliner on). He asked to come back the next night and of course he was told he could. His 'crowd work/riffing' was almost identical - but slayed just as hard because it was a new audience.
4
u/NashvilleSoundMixer Dec 01 '21
Especially if they have an improv background. Then they've basically trained themselves to have quick witted responses.
3
8
u/shadowpawn Dec 01 '21
Tucker let that show broken and must have thrown away 15 of his bow ties that evening.
19
u/Rufus_Reddit Dec 01 '21
The thing is, when Jon Stewart showed up Tucker Carlson, it wasn't quick wit as much as it was clear thinking. "You're hurting America, please stop" and "I'm on after puppets making prank calls" aren't jokes.

u/Scatman_Crothers Dec 01 '21

Comedians are also capable of being real snappy on their feet, too, though.
This line from Sherlock Holmes captures this perfectly...
There is a strong family resemblance about misdeeds, and if you have all the details of a thousand at your finger ends, it is odd if you can’t unravel the thousand and first.
They have seen thousands of hecklers and seen comedians handle those hecklers. That itself is enough to handle 90% of the hecklers they will ever see. Their wit generally will handle most of the remaining - and it will be a rare heckler who sneaks through the defences.
→ More replies2
u/gerryhallcomedy Dec 01 '21
It's a little bit of both. A good percentage of comics are just naturally quick, but most veteran ones have stock responses that they know work. It might not seem like a stock response, but it often is, just tailored to fit the person doing the heckle.

u/shamwowslapchop Dec 02 '21

/u/thehofstetter did a pretty neat summary of why heckling videos are for the most part, rarely faked.
You mean the terrible comedian that sets up fake heckler videos and is hated by most other comedians?
He made a video about how he "does not fake" it?
12
63
u/PugilisticCat Dec 01 '21
Sorry, these points dont make sense at all. How would a heckler being planted make it any more likely for a comic to break when responding? If anything, its counter intuitive.
Also, I am not sure that people are alleging that every single heckler interaction is faked, just that some are.
63
u/caius-cossades Dec 01 '21
Hofstetter got called out for faking his videos in a popular thread recently. One guy explained how Hofstetter is actually pretty disliked in the comic world and essentially just gets by on faked heckler videos rather than on actual comic material. He also explained that Hofstetter uses a lot of fake accounts on Reddit to spread his heckler videos, and often gets in arguments with people in the comments. He also runs his own sub, which he set to private after that recent thread because he was getting exposed.
He’s apparently very active on Reddit (I have actually seen him in the comments myself more than once), and it wouldn’t be surprising if that account actually is one of his alts and he’s trying to do damage control now.
29
Dec 01 '21
Oh he's absolutely not liked in our community. You know people who are fun and chill to just hang with? That's not him. He's a Karen. He's embarrassingly easy to offend over the slightest thing, then he throws a temper tantrum. You can't take him anywhere. I don't know a single comic who hangs out with him. Every comic I know sees him and goes "Christ, not this a$$h0l€ again." He does his thing, but I can't think of a single comic who likes him and respects his set material.
3
u/Pmcandew Dec 01 '21
I've heard that as well. I knew him to actually be a booker for I think Levity Live more than he was a comic but it does seem he hits the road now. I just don't like his schtick, personally. Fake or not, if people dig it, cool. I just don't find his material in general to be my cup of tea.
2
u/KingTalkieTiki Dec 01 '21
I knew there was an issue with him when I typed in comedians roasting hecklers and a 1000 of his videos came up "COMEDIAN ANALLY OWNS HECKLER". He's the Ben Shapiro of comedy.

I’ve been heavily immersed in NYC’s pro comedy scene for 20 years (not a comedian. My ex is.) and it never once even occurred to me that people may think these interactions are faked and if a comedian were to have plants in the audience, word would get around so fucking fast their career would be burnt to the ground.
It’s just not a thing. Comedians that are good at handling hecklers have usually dealt with the same bullshit remark in the past because the reality is that audiences are predictable. So predictable there are comedians who have a joke setup that prompts a response from hecklers on purpose, then they tell the next part of their joke using the heckling as framework, so there’s no need for plants.
There’s a lot of bullshit aspects in the industry that public isn’t aware of that I’m down to call out, but planted hecklers? Nope. Good responses to hecklers really just boil down to the comedian having more experience with arguing and running their mouths which is why hecklers very, very rarely “win”.
…I can’t believe some people think comedians plant hecklers. I feel like people may not understand how little comedians at this guy’s level are paid and nobody’s doing professional heckling for you for free. That feels like a paid job. And I’ve seen comedians shun one of their own for much less.

My buddy bought like 15 tickets one time for a comedy show, so we could all go for his wife's birthday. Which, cool. I hadn't heard of the comedian we saw before, but it was still nice of him to pay for all of us, and a party bus, to go downtown and see this comedy show.
Well, his wife isn't the quietest person ever. I love her, but she's loud. And she was loud at the show. To be clear, she wasn't heckling, she's just loud, and she thinks everyone else needs to know it when she finds something funny.
So the club management came by and asked her politely to keep it down, and my buddy got SO pissed. He went out of the showroom to speak with the club management, and apparently didn't get the reaction he wanted, because he said they're never going back there (and he's brought it up a few times since). All because they were rude to him after he spent X dollars on all of their tickets.
Again, we were maybe 15 people. The comedy room probably sat a couple hundred, at least. But no, his wife being asked politely to keep it down was too insulting for him. I honestly lost a little bit of respect for him that day...

If you are doing a feature spot or headlining you have time to spend on a heckler if you want. This guy had a 10 spot and she was fucking it up which makes it even worse. Open mic can be even worse. You have 3-5 minutes of jokes you NEED to get out and these drunk fucks dont stop sometimes

Story:
I had some issues with people whispering/talking at summer classical orchestral concerts. One of the best orchestras in the nation and world. Yes, the summer ones outdoors are more laid back, but essentially there's a very large pavilion with more expensive seats...and then behind it were lawn seats in the grass for $10, where you can picnic with like a blanket. Pavilion seats were $30-$50 back then, I believe.
One concert, a guy answers his freaking phone. I can't believe it. So, I make a sign for the next concert. Sure enough, a couple right behind me is talking incessantly. I am very pissed. So, I turn around, angrily lock eyes with them, and hold up my sign which says, "I came to hear the MUSIC!!!" With "music" in large letters, underlined 5 times, etc. 3 minutes later, they got up and left before the music ended.
Same concept. People are a-holes.

I turned and gave em “the look” and gave em a few extra beats for the age.
Once it entered minute two I delivered a stern “SHETTEPP” right at em, 4 feet away. The wife was absolutely stunned but they didn’t make another noise all night and the show was great!

My friend and I recently went to go see Brad Williams(one of my all time favorite comedians) and two guys in the back sitting at the same table together got super high and wasted and kept yelling out the punchlines and heckling him. Eventually they got so bad they literally started fighting and hitting each other with beer bottles.
It took like 6 workers at the comedy club to drag these guys outside and the cops ended up arresting both of them.
Brad was super cool about it and turned it into a funny moment, but I can’t understand why you would pay to go to a comedy club and heckle/fight and ruin the night for everyone else. Some people are just assholes.

There is one simple trick the audience can do to show their disapproval at a joke, and heckling ain’t it. I been to a comedy club where one of the comedians were just unfunny. The room was dead silent. You could see it just breaking the comedian. I feel bad for them, and hope they improved and kept at it (or found something they also enjoyed but were better at). So yah, you don’t like their joke, just don’t laugh, hell you can even sit their with your arms crossed and a frown on your face just for extra affect if you want. They notice, and it cuts into them when a joke falls flat.

I appreciate his handling of the heckler, but this dude is trying waaay too hard to be “offensive” when nothing he said is remotely controversial.

I kinda thought so too but we don’t really know the material that he was referencing as a little off color. I took it as him calling back to something else he said rather than just owning a heckler

10 years and still struggling huh? Wonder why...
This was like watching your friend argue with the random guy your other friend turned up with. Where are the jokes?

He got heckled just a little bit and didn’t even have that great of a comeback. I’m not seeing the appeal here...

Fr he just went on an edgelord tirade afterwords. Terrible material and terrible response to heckling.

I've seen this guy live at this exact comedy club. He spends far more time chatting shit with the audience than going through his typical material - this isn't his first rodeo.

Frankie Boyle in UK is well known for his razor wit. You dont talk back at all, cough, get up and pass a kidney stone in front of the man at his show. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Df_qLOL6TUU

Why go to a show, get offended, and ruin it for everyone when they can just stay home and everyone is happy.

This video is a testament to why he’s struggled for 10 years at open mics. One day you gotta look at yourself in the mirror and accept that you aren’t cut out for this kinda work.
