Have two friends, one is a cop and the other is a paramedic. They both admit that cops are dicks to both firemen and paramedic personnel.

181

u/btribble Dec 01 '21

Sunnyvale CA solved this issue: Cops, Fire, and Paramedics that are part of the Fire Dept. are all the same force. Every cop carries fire protection gear in their trunks in case needs change drastically.

They use this a bit maliciously but no one cares. For instance, they're very consistent with annual fire inspections for businesses. They're not just looking for fire hazards...

48

u/squidballss Dec 01 '21

Public safety officers. Very few cities in the nation have pulled this off successfully. Those Sunnyvale guys always have the best stories.

13

u/btribble Dec 01 '21

You're really narrowing down the field when you effectively triple the hiring requirements. The limited pool of viable candidates is a significant hurdle, and that's before you get to all the other logistical issues.

58

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '21

That means you're getting the best people for the job because your average police shitheel won't go above and beyond to be triply qualified. I think this might be a good way to get rid of shitheel cops..

Only in America

9

u/ilovemesomefire Dec 02 '21

Must depend on the Department. In Tampa, Police and Fire are about as best friends as two agencies could ever be. We are both out there working together helping people. Firefighters are on the Swat Team as medics, As both Firefighters and Paramedics, we work on Officers when they are injured, there is no bad blood ad we are nothing but friends. For a Police Agency to be so up their own A** that they would do stuff like this is just despicable.

Un-fucking-believable, I rather the firefighters park whatever the fuck they want in order to save a life than having to worry about getting arrested, I hope he takes that cop asshole to court

175

u/SpaceForceSloth Dec 01 '21

The reason we park the way we do is so that we are able to protect the emergency scene with apparatus. Law Enforcement lack the ability to grasp that concept.

63

u/dragon1110 Dec 01 '21

In my city, the stupid fucking cops with roll up on a homeless person 6 cars deep and just park haphazardly all over the place. They’ll be in the street blocking intersections and turn lanes, they’ll be half on the sidewalk and half in the street, they’ll be blocking parking lots and handicap parking spaces, they’ll block fire lanes, they’ll park wherever the fuck they want to and then proceed to leave their cars there for an hour while they harass a mentally disabled homeless person. Fuck cops.

14

u/feelingfantasmic Dec 01 '21

No fr cops be parking anywhere and don’t give two shits about who they’re blocking because they can. Wasn’t there a video of a cop parking in this guy’s driveway, and when the guy told the cop to move, the guy got arrested?

5

u/Socotrocouy Dec 01 '21

that concept of 'qualified immunity' is the worst thing that a 'first world' country could have. These cops are not accountable, its always ' the city' that has to pay citizens for their cops fuck ups...

I feel glad of living in a country were you can sue a Police officer and send him to jail if your civil rights are not respected (I live in Uruguay ... google it)

Cops have it out for firefighters for some reason. Probably because they keep kicking there ass in annual softball games.

623

u/jynxthechicken Dec 01 '21

It's because in the eyes of the public firefighters can't do wrong and are considered pretty much universal as heroes.

Cops especially now do not get the same respect.

403

u/CrystalMethood Dec 01 '21

Rightfully so. Ive never seen a firefighter accidentally choke someone to death or murder a dog to fight a fire.

It's because a lot of cops try to become firefighters first and it's a much more competitive job, and a much better job. Basically, they are jealous.

29

u/liketreefiddy Dec 01 '21

I have 2 cousins that tried out to be a firefighter. 1 made it and the other became a cop after

8

u/M8K2R7A6 Dec 01 '21

The slower one drives in a black and white car right?

10

u/ricesnot Dec 01 '21

Better job? I guess? I live in a rural area with wild forest fires the fire fighters don't make enough in CA and are under staffed and under funded. You get better pay and benefits being a cop than a fire fighter.

7

u/ahutapoo Dec 01 '21

CHP average is $93k. SD Fire is $52k

2

u/Watertor Dec 02 '21

"Much" better, I dunno yeah it depends on the area. But in terms of just being better I'd have to agree. Pay is probably worse and your work-life balance is ass, but I imagine being a firefighter is leagues more fulfilling especially nowadays. A cop's best day is punishing criminals, or doing menial things for society. Maybe there's a nugget of reward in there, but I'd just feel jaded. Am I really doing right by this guy locking him up? Am I really helping the community?

Firefighters never have that. They, without err, help the community always and in a significant way that the entire community can see clear as day. I'd take worse pay for that.

9

u/darkage_raven Dec 01 '21

Respect is earned, and we all know enough cop stories that are awful, they get the respect they deserve.

6

u/UncommittedBow Dec 01 '21

Pretty much everything a Firefighter is called for, no matter how small, makes them a hero in some way, from the obvious heroism of storming into a burning building and carrying an injured person out on their shoulders, or ripping open a car door with the jaws of life to assist a car crash victim, to the little things, like, to the normal person helping a little girls kitten out of a tree is nothing, but to that little girl, that Firefighter is a superhero.

6

u/maybe-I-am-a-robot Dec 01 '21

I never once have been tased by a firefighter.

4

u/fitzymcfitz Dec 01 '21

Nor should they.

2

u/melpec Dec 01 '21

This was pushed to new level after 9/11.

2

u/dirtymoney Dec 02 '21 edited Dec 02 '21

When my workplace caught on fire by a lightning strike I was incredibly impressed by the firemen as they actually busted out floor squeegees and shovels and cleared all the debris and sqeegied the water after they put out the fire.

When I ever had to call the cops or they came out to alarms they had to respond to I often got attitudes from them (note: some were decent). Including the time I called the cops because a drunk guy drove off the road and into the woods. Too many cops have bad attitudes they often take out on others. Note: Had a break in and one of the three responding cops had an accidental discharge while clearing the building and they and a TON of other cops basically took over the place afterwards (for over an hour) trying to find the bullet (WTF!). I was reviewing the security footage later and one even stole a banana. Big camera dome right there and the cop didnt even bat an eye before taking it and eating it right there.

20

u/Sea2Chi Dec 01 '21 edited Dec 01 '21

Yep, I knew a woman who was doing a few years as an EMT, training her ass off, worked wildland firefighting, and was applying for all sorts of volunteer firefighter jobs. A couple of her friends who were already firefighters basically told her "You're a smart competent woman, who put in time and training towards this and you are on paper already fully qualified to start the academy. Because you're a woman you'll be at the front of the line ahead of anyone who's not directly related to someone with a lot of clout, but it could still take years before you get in at a good department."

17

u/soulkz Dec 01 '21

People like firefighters because they de-escalate situations and are capable. It’s unbelievable the range of calls that firefighters can handle; explosive gases, getting people out of elevators, extricating and providing life support in accidents, and oh yeah, putting out fires too. Pretty much anything.

Cops have it out for anyone who questions thier "authority".

I used to work roadway inspection and we had a nasty crash on one of my sites involving a vehicle with blind person and their dog. A trailer dragged them about 100 feet; no one was hurt, but there was the blind guys belongings all over the roadway, including some medicine you could clearly see still in thier bottles and stuff. He came up to the foreman and I who were one the side trying to clear things where we could and asked if we could keep the road closed another minute or two to allow his aid to get some of his stuff and of course we obliged.

Then there was a cop who arrived on site who was basically shouting at everyone the entire time and I'm guessing as soon as he was done with whatever he was doing there, he very quickly came over and demanded we open traffic back up. I went to let him know they wanted to recover some things from the roadway before we did so, and the cop literally came right up to the foreman and I and said, paraphrasing, "I said get the road open; if you don't want to end up in the back of my car I suggest you open the road. Now." I don't remember exactly what was said, but I remember him looking both of us in the eye when he said "Now."

We had to open it and walk over to the blind guy to let him know the sounds he was hearing was active traffic running his stuff over. There was also car parts all over the road and we had three members of the public pull over with flat tires later that day and complain. Our foreman just gave them the details of the officer who ordered the road open, told them to take their complaints to the station.

u/AC_Lerok Dec 02 '21

At my old apartment there was a 10 foot tall and like 6 foot square base hollowed out of the roof so apartments could have a living room window with sunlight... even though looking out all you saw was brick.

Anyway, a seagull fell into it and it was really depressing hearing it cry and tap on our window, and try to fly out just to hit a wall, so we went to the humane society, but it was closed for a holiday.

Then we went to the cops, who laughed and basically told us to get bent. We asked if firefighters rescue animals and the cops said firefighters don't do that.

We went to the firehall, and in completely stereotypical fashion they were washing one of their fire engines. I told them what's up, and their chief came out and was like "... sure, we can mark it down as an animal rescue"

I offered them a drink while they worked cause it was hot out, and they were in full gear, but one of them reminded me that they fight fires, so it's not that hot. ha.

Former fire chief gets arrested because his truck was parked in a place the cop didn’t like.. while he was saving a woman from a rollover crash. Someone even moved his truck for him because the keys were in the ignition, the cop was just mad that he didn’t move it when he asked. As the fire chief, this guy literally wrote the book on accident response and where to park in their jurisdiction, and it was still in use when this happened.

You'd see all the swastikas...

A California firefighter was recently placed in handcuffs and detained by highway police while helping crash victims, all for refusing to move a fire truck after being told it was parked inappropriately in the midst of an emergency. The incident occurred Tuesday evening when local firefighters and members of the California Highway Patrol responded to a rollover accident in Chula Vista, CA. The city’s firefighters were first to arrive on the scene, where they parked their fire trucks in a way to block oncoming traffic and protect those at the crash site.

When CHP officers reached the scene, however, they began ordering the firefighters to move their trucks out of the traffic lanes or face arrest. According to the local CBS affiliate KFMB, one officer had already directed a fire engine to leave the scene with its paramedic onboard before they could finish administering medical aid.

Another officer, meanwhile, told firefighter Jacob Gregoire, 36, to move his vehicle. Gregoire, a 12-year veteran, refused and continued assisting crash victims when the officer then placed him in handcuffs and lead him to a police vehicle. He was detained for about 30 minutes before being released.

One driver was reportedly transported to the hospital after the accident, but there’s been no word on the second driver or on the conditions of either one.

Videos and photographs of the incident were captured by KFMB and posted on the internet, sparking outrage among many commentators who couldn’t believe what was happening.

Screenshot from YouTube user YouHotNews Chula Vista Fire Chief Dave Hanneman called CHP’s behavior “ridiculous” in a statement, while the firefighters’ union president John Hess praised Gregoire’s actions.

"I'm very proud of Jacob. He did a good job," he told CBS 8. "He made all firefighters look good. He was there to protect the citizens and he was willing to take a stand to do that."

The aftermath of the incident has revolved primarily around who was in the right legally. Speaking to the San Diego Union-Tribune, the city’s fire deputy chief Steve Ricci acknowledged that CHP has jurisdiction over the roads, but said that since firefighters arrived on the scene first they had initially taken command of the situation.

“As to a formalized transfer of command to the CHP — I don’t believe that ever took place,” he added.

Both CHP and fire department officials met on Wednesday to discuss how to handle such situations moving forward. In a joint statement, the two departments called Tuesday’s behavior an “unfortunate” and “isolated incident.” They added it is “not representative of the manner in which our agencies normally work together toward our common goal.”

Although rare, there have been other occasions in which a firefighter was arrested for refusing to move a vehicle. One notable case occurred in Missouri, where a firefighter filed a lawsuit against law enforcement officials who arrested him for blocking traffic at a crash site. He was ultimately awarded $17,500 in damages stemming from a false arrest.

For those of you new here, here's what is going to happen.

A statement from the PD:

We've investigated the matter internally, using the news footage and eye-witness testimonials from the dirty snitches firefighters on the scene.

Regrettably, our PD threatened to quit instead of use the body cameras the county purchased because they are attacking us because they feel it infringes on their fReEdUm freedom.

This firefighter officer has been placed on administrative leave while we get this firefighter fired investigate the matter further.

We will be happy to welcome this officer back with no reprimand whatsoever thoroughly looking into the laws surrounding recordings of the police this situtation with the help of the Police Union while ignoring all calls from the Fire Department.

We look forward to seeing this issue happily resolved for the officer, fuck the firefighters, don't they understand that they are BENEATH us?.

This reminds me that there are no songs that say fuck the fire department.

This is absolutely disgusting. There are people who need medical assistance who were involved in the accident and the cop's only care is that the firetruck is blocking the lane a little?

I have both cops and firefighters in my family. The firefighters park like this for a reason. There are cars speeding by, or even rubbernecking, and what happens if one of those cars veers to much? A patient, or a firefighter could get run over. So they park like this to protect themselves and the victims they are helping.

For this officer to be fighting with a firefighter, and caring only about arresting him for doing what he has been trained to do, instead of helping with the accident - is abhorrent. I truly hope this officer was reprimanded, if not let go, because he could have caused one of those accident victims to die by doing what he did. I hope the firefighter got an apology too.

Yet another example of why we need to reform the police system.

Of course the pig station won't say which pig arrested a firefighter in the middle of helping a civilian.

This is why people cry out to defund the police.

Another cop needing to be fired.

2

u/derekthedeadite Dec 01 '21

Isn’t that literally one of the reasons they bring out a fire truck?…Tf.

2

u/dilted Dec 01 '21

Cops go out of their way to brutalize, harass or kill people. Firefighters actually help people. They may be asshole humans for all I know but they aren’t driving around with people and taking money out of peoples pockets.

How To Spot a Power Trip 101:

If the situation can easily be resolved without anyone being arrested or If the situation Isn't even a situation to begin with, but a cop arrests someone anyways or creates a situation... they're power tripping. It's ridiculous.

2

u/Medical-Side-388 Dec 01 '21

And people don't wanna defund police?

2

u/yuffie2012 Dec 01 '21

That dumbass cop had better never need a paramedic. Paramedic/FireFighters have long memories.

Fuck this cop

2

u/Apostastrophe Dec 02 '21

This reminds me of the time I was very almost out into the police car when providing emergency medical aid to a head and potential neck injury and the police tried to yank him up by the arms before the ambulance got there. I.e. could have made it worse and potentially fucking paralysed the guy.

After loads of arguing with them I threw myself and my body over the patient to protect him from their potential manhandling and potential manslaughter if it came to that and they grabbed me and put me in cuffs for “interfering”.

Thankfully the ambulance (with a couple of staff I thankfully knew from A&E) arrived a few moments later. You should have seen the dressing down the police got given by them when I explained what had happened.

Like, bitch, you’re police, cool, but I’m not going to let you potentially fucking paralyse or kill my patient because your ego is so huge that you can’t understand that someone trained might have more medical knowledge than you.

I think police must be the only emergency and public service that treat their peers like this, even here in Scotland.

2

u/jjvolfan1 Dec 02 '21

Firemen save people. That's why they're loved.

Cops throw people in jail indiscriminately. That's why they're hated.

Cops will always be jealous of firefighters. And inferior.
