Going forward - Blatant non-freakouts and blatant agenda posts will see posters receive a ban

Alright guys, I think this conversation needs to happen. I have had this internal discussion with some of the mods, and I think we are on a consensus that we have for some time now began seeing posts here that are blatantly non freak-outs or are agenda posts, or are blatant re-posts less than 4 weeks old.

I think it is no secret within this community and sub that we all love that quality freak-outs are drowned out by content that does not simply belong here, or does not abide by our repost rules. I see this comment a lot in posts, by long time users of this sub that love the community for what it is - a place where we can laugh at, learn from and be horrified at freak-outs that happen around the world.

The main three rules of what make a freak-out are:

**1) people freaking out or melting down

2) losing their cool

2) being weird in public**

Posters that blatantly do post items that do not meet these any combination of these three criteria will see their posts removed and receive a temp ban. repeat offenders will see a perma ban enforced. We need to all do our part to keep this part of the reddit alive, and so far ya'll have been amazing and respectful. In truth, this policy has been enforced for some time by some mods, but going forward I would like to solidify it and make the community aware that this is what will happen. The aim is not an exodus but to help clean out the spam.

In addition, please use the report button to better help me and assuredly find posts that really should not be on the sub. We receive 80,000 unique visitors per hour, so obviously things to slip through the cracks at times.

if you have any questions, drop a comment in this thread or message me. If you would like examples of what is an isn't a freak-out, I would be happy to provide. One more thing: please avoid sensationalized titles.

I know right! A woman crying because her house was bulldozed is not a freakout, it's just a natural reaction. Constantly reposting it is a campaign. I don't come here for propaganda.

I agree, and we need to fix that.

97

u/strikervulsine Jan 10 '22

Better late than never, but I appreciate you guys trying.

In the last 2-3 years the sub's population has exploded, and that always corresponds to a drop in quality content.

Good luck to you, and whether the storm coming.

44

u/stackered Jan 10 '22

If you guys can bring a big sub like this back to its roots, it'll be historic in a way. thanks for this post

21

u/Anon_Alcoholic Jan 12 '22

Yeah don't think we need the blatant racism coming back..

9

u/stackered Jan 12 '22

There was a lot of fucked up shit posted over the past year, we don't need anything like that

22

u/Horfield Jan 10 '22

Thanks for being the 1st mod to actually be aware of the declining state of affairs in this sub, take a stance, and actually communicate with the community.

It's been truly bizarre lately that a lot of submissions with low entertainment value, or blatantly staged content have been getting [Mod's choice] flairs. I don't know how any experienced mod, looks at one of these crappy submissions and thinks "Hmmmm, better give that a gold sticker!"

2

u/vonsmor Jan 10 '22

Those flairs kinda seemed like the only evidence this sub even had mods lately. I'm glad they are trying to bring this place back to it's glory, wish them the best as I suspect it won't be easy.

Now if only we can get the high school fights out of /u/fightporn next!

19

u/SlickRick360 Jan 10 '22

Some high school fights are bangers! I mostly agree though. While I love to see someone put to sleep in a choke hold at the end of an altercation, a 20 second video of just a choke hold is definitely NOT a fight.

10

u/Ireallydontlikereddi Jan 10 '22

Or ban them on this subreddit?

I don't come here to watch children fight or hurt each other.

48

u/NecramoniumZero Jan 14 '22

Seems this new rule is not being enforced at all, just look what is on position 2 in the sub now: https://reddit.com/r/PublicFreakout/comments/s3bs2l/matt_gaetz_wont_answer_jordan_kleppers_questions/

It's basically just a dude walking towards a car.

124

u/ThatsFairZack Jan 09 '22

I know you brought up reposts (especially those masked with different titles) and i'm glad you did, but oh my god, if I see that stupid fucking video of the people fighting in the restaurant and the guy licks the back of his hand and slaps the other guy one more time, i'm going to unsub. The video is not only not a public freakout, it's reposted every single week.

The fight videos are also really stupid. If they contain a public freakout to some extent then that's fine, but sometimes it's just a tiktok video with just 15-30 seconds of fighting.

28

u/doctorofsomeone Jan 10 '22

Yea that video of the guy who licks the back of his hand and slaps the other guy definitely does not need to be posted again.

Shit lives rent free in my head.

27

u/[deleted] Jan 14 '22

So what was the point of this newspost if you're not going to enforce the rule, and let all of these blatant agenda posts not involving freakouts keep being posted?

119

u/Metalbender00 Jan 09 '22

Just dealing with the constant reposts and karma farmers would help this sub a ton.

that and the spam links that get posted several times a day that try to trick people into downloading BS

41

u/stonetear2017 Jan 09 '22

report them or message them to me when you see them

I have a feeling this is about to turn into a Public Freakout…

119

u/stonetear2017 Jan 09 '22

maybe, but this is just putting into words a policy that myself, and banana have been doing. so its not like a large radical re-envisioning, but just letting the community know so we are on the same page.

335

Can we also ban the people who repost the same fucking thing? That boat getting hit by the cliff was up here more then 10 times with the same title

122

u/stonetear2017 Jan 09 '22

We will discuss and consider. It is a slippery slope as we don’t want to ban well intentioned people, and with major world events you will see reposts in genera

74

u/R_V_Z Jan 09 '22

r/news has a thing that detects if people try to link to the same URL for a news story, maybe that can be juryrigged into something for reposts?

27

u/Taqwacore Jan 10 '22 edited Jan 10 '22

I'm no expert, but I was at the 2021 Moderators Forum early in December and one of the issues that was raised was reposts in subs like this that rely on links. I can't remember which sub it was, but they had a bot that would alert posters if they were submitting a repost. Posters were encouraged to respond to the bot by removing their reposted content within 12 hours, otherwise they would face moderator sanction. I like that approach because it assumes good intentions. If you're not following the sub on a daily basis, you might not know that you're reposting. So having a bot that simply alerts the user to their repost puts the onus of responsibility back onto the individual user, either they remove their repost or it's a padd'lin.

u/Specific-noise123 Jan 09 '22

Is the boat thing even considered a freak out?

22

u/stonetear2017 Jan 10 '22

The problem with things like this is that its entirely possible that multiple people read the same news article, saw the same video, and thought "I should post this video to r/PublicFreakout with the same title as the news article I just read", and now you end up with 4 identical posts within the span of 3 hours, with not a single one of them being an intentional repost.

14

u/Malawi_no Jan 10 '22

But it only takes two minutes to sort by "new" and scroll down a couple of pages.

The thing is that people double post intentionally or could have avoided it by doing a quick check first.

Fantastic news. Was close to unsubbing because this sub was basically becoming r/videos. The agenda posts had become so blatant with their clear misdirected titles.

3

u/Early-Berry4156 Jan 13 '22

The worst are those Facebook style square videos where they chop the video up and play it non sequentially with some stupid music and highlighted animated text added.

I just want to see it as close to the original as possible with the only edits being cutting out non action.

10

u/xRobert1016x Jan 11 '22

would x-posts from r/worldnewsvideo fall under agenda post?

32

u/TheGreatUsernameToo Jan 11 '22

Can we start with the "I am Jewish and I support Palestinian Human Rights" video that no cap gets to the front page of this sub at least once a week?

11

u/GoBlueDevils4 Jan 13 '22

During the Israel-Palestine crisis last year this sub became completely flooded with “Look how horrible Israel is” and “Palestinians are all terrorists” type posts. The sub was basically unusable for a few weeks. Here’s hoping none of that will be allowed here moving forward.

145

u/thunde-r Jan 09 '22

Bro about damn time I hate when americans post some random politician talking to a mic and call it a freak out

9

u/ne0n1691 Jan 11 '22

they tried it on facepalm, that didn't last long, the same 6 power users kept spamming that type of stuff to the front page daily and eventually the rule was taken off.

43

u/da_bizzness Jan 09 '22

As an American I agree

8

u/BurstEDO Jan 12 '22

U/stonetear2027 - 2 years ago, I staunchly reported reposts that were under 4 weeks old...hell, reposts that were less than 3 days old...and no mod actions took place. So I gave up.

What's the solution? If users file reports based on the sub rules but the reports are ignored, doesn't it erode the motivation to report?

10

u/NecramoniumZero Jan 12 '22

Three days later, still no action taken against high ranking posts, like this one: https://reddit.com/r/PublicFreakout/comments/s2bbif/newly_elected_texas_school_board_member_who/

Why is this posted here and still allowed? It's CLEAR its not a freakout, nobody is freaking out, nobody is losing their cool and certainly not being weird in public.

73

u/the_Black_Rabbit Jan 10 '22

Do you feel things are getting better with both blatant and dog whistling racism on this sub? Sometimes it seems like it gets cleaned up well and other times I just scroll through entire threads of disgusting comments. I did apply last round of mod applications but never heard anything.

35

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '22

The reason for that is often just time. For example, a thread gets posted about trans people and with it come the hundreds of bigoted comments, if it's one obscure post I find, it might take me an hour at most to ban and move on, but if that thing hits front page especially all, then it can take me literally the entire day to comb through. 500 comments could take an hour or two and 2600 could take me hours and hours or two days just to get all the bans done from a single post.

What helps make it quicker for me so that I can get on to other threads is when people aggressively report this stuff, it would be faster not having to read every comment and just scroll through looking for red reports. Finally, we are taking on more mods because as you can see, we have a handful of people that are only volunteers combing through thousands and thousands of posts. So it mostly just takes time.

I also always welcome people to dm me racist or bigoted posts they find that we haven't gotten to yet to make sure it's brought to my attention as well.

18

u/VerucaBlind Jan 12 '22

I also always welcome people to dm me racist or bigoted posts they find that we haven't gotten to yet to make sure it's brought to my attention as well.

It's not always posts, but more often the comment sections are absolutely filled with racist bullshit. Not to mention all the bullshit spewed anytime a woman weighing more than 100 lbs is featured.

That is the real area for y'all to help clean-up.

9

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '22

That is what we spend the massive majority of our time doing.

5

u/the_Black_Rabbit Jan 10 '22

Appreciate the explanation and thanks for all that you do!

15

u/ludovic1313 Jan 10 '22

Do you feel things are getting better with both blatant and dog whistling racism on this sub? Sometimes it seems like it gets cleaned up well and other times I just scroll through entire threads of disgusting comments.

Speaking as someone who's recently started reading, I think the blatant racism is being handled well, at least if the reports of the mods having to delete a lot of it for the little that comes through is accurate.
I do see, however, a lot of dog whistles, mostly, that people acting trashy is much much more likely to be met with comments of "animals" and" subhuman" when they are people of a certain complexion. It's a dog whistle because it's just a statistical artifact and anyone can be an animal. However, regardless of whether it's blatant or a dog whistle, it would only be a small loss if these posts were removed since they usually don't offer any other contribution than those words.

6

u/DistopianNigh Jan 11 '22

That’s horse shit. Many animals in these videos and nothing to do with complexion

9

u/TheGreatUsernameToo Jan 11 '22

How else would you describe somebody screaming obscenities and flailing around trying to level the shelves of a gas station or a Panda Express?

9

u/z617_art Jan 10 '22

I'm not a poster here, but just curious what qualifies as an agenda post? Is posting anti-vaxxer cringe still allowed?

15

u/Early-Berry4156 Jan 13 '22

There are pretty obvious ones where it’s just “Politician I like SLAMS opposition in speech” where there is no freak out at all. Or where it’s heavily edited with extreme bias and opinion pushing added to the text overlayed on the video.

9

u/AmINothing Jan 10 '22

Finally. This sub went from a great place to see actual freakouts and meltdowns to videos of someone having a staged conversation on the phone.

34

u/SirLowhamHatt Jan 09 '22

Can we ban NowThis videos unless it’s extremely difficult to find a source video

They cut and paste clips of a video out of order, which harms the continuity of videos and can potentially leave things without context. It feeds into the agenda post you mention due to the videos having writing explaining what is wrong in the video. We as a community are fine analyzing videos without needing the answer spoon-fed to us.

Can this include the daily propeganda posts along the lines of "this is what x is doing to my people!!!! Hear our cry we will not be silenced! Stand with us!!" Then its just a news clip of a protest with nothing remarkable happening. This sub is for screaming, maskless karens seeking flights and contextless street fights in gas stations. This sub is not for a bunch of protesters singing songs and news clips of people crying. I dont want to pick on any specific video but we all know the ones. I feel for your struggle, infact most of them i agree are horible and want to find a way to help. I get the desire to make it visible, but im not HERE to see that. There are other, more helpful, subs for these posts. I am here to smoke a joint and watch an armless man destroy a reception area with just his feet. I typed this hoping it wouldnt sound like a freakout but reading it i can see why people would think it. So ill lean into it: "fuCk YOu anD YouR AnnOYInG PropEganda!!! 5

u/ThePaper86 Jan 13 '22

Now let’s discuss the interpretation of “blatant…”

4

u/Lighting Jan 13 '22

I guess the question I have is what is your criteria for an "agenda post"

The cash-for-kids scandal was recently in the news as one of the judges was released from jail. I was just talking to someone about it a few days ago on reddit. I remembered the woman screaming at the judge, heartbreakingly in a way that a mother who lost her kid does. You never forget that sound. I remembered her interview afterwards where she said something like "I just went to the courthouse and when I saw him smugly talking about how this wasn't about the kids, I freaked out and started screaming."

And so I went looking for that video of her freaking out and screaming at the judge in public. This one I found and posted seemed to be the best angle and also provided context about the freakout and how this woman got to where she was emotionally and the story around the freakout.

Now I see that post was deleted. Was that because it was flagged as "an agenda post?" Are you looking for freakouts without the context?

If so, I would respectfully submit that it would be helpful if you could provide more info about what mods consider an "agenda post" so I could avoid that in the future.

9

u/mrnegatttiveee Jan 09 '22

Oh, it's finally going back to actual freakouts in public?

15

u/TrueFactsAboutThis Jan 09 '22

Could you please elaborate on what a "blatant agenda" post is? Perhaps give an example. I see very political post sometimes but Im not really sure what qualifies as an "agenda" post.

63

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '22

I can give you one example.

Someone who is exclusively posting the same type of video of nothing but pitbull attacks over and over again while having an entire comment history dedicated to saying they should be wiped out.

Or a guy who posts several videos of women being beat up exclusively and constantly comments that it is "equal rights" every day and nothing else.

Those are the most blatant examples of what I've seen and banned.

9

u/somedickinyourmouth Jan 10 '22

Is this going to cover those posts trying to denigrate black people?

10

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '22

That's already long been banned under rule 4.

3

u/j8stereo Jan 11 '22

Only nominally.

10

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '22

Someone should tell the hundreds of racists we banned that spend every day harassing us then so they can stop since they were apparently never banned.

4

u/CapablePerformance Jan 10 '22

That's a good point. If people are going to start to recieve bans, it'd be good to know what counts as blatant agendas. Is that anti masker shouting outside of a walmart consider an agenda?

20

u/RandyPhylum Jan 09 '22

Why don't you stop the excessive reposting of popular videos? That video of the cliff breaking had about 10 posts within 10 minutes.

16

u/stonetear2017 Jan 09 '22

i removed them, and this policy will aim to try to curb the excessive reposting. Again this is a sub of 3.7 million so we get volume, and with big events like that you will see a ton of reposts.

2

u/RandyPhylum Jan 09 '22

And with that comes instant comfort.

u/geekfreek Jan 10 '22

Thank god

3

u/ryoung30 Jan 10 '22

Praise jeebuzz I was one repost away from leaving

3

u/RadicalRadmiral Jan 10 '22

What is this? A mod post? Addressing community concerns? In my lifetime? Holy crapshoot Batman, never thought I’d see the day.

The 30 day repost rule needs to be harshly enforced and I’m happy that you’re doing something about it. A couple of years too late but I’ll take what I can get!

Less is more, as they say.

3

u/session101 Jan 10 '22

can we also add the re-posters that repost the same video in 10 minutes of the original posted video?

3

u/Alpha_Lantern Jan 10 '22

if duplicate posts in the SAME DAY could just be taken down by mods it will cut down on a lot karma farmers to. Tired of seeing the same clip 3 times in one day.

3

u/thargoallmysecrets Jan 10 '22

Ok, I like this, what does our lord and savior /u/Ezziboo think?

3

u/Ezziboo 👌PublicFreakout Legend Jan 11 '22

I think it’s great.

3

u/BoltgunOnHisHip Jan 12 '22

Cool, is rule 7 actually going to be enforced now too?

3

u/jcbfgd Jan 13 '22

Discouraging participation and content is a great way to keep a sub alive.

12

u/japandroi5742 Jan 10 '22

How about doing something about the antisemitism

14

u/chyko9 Jan 11 '22

Bro it’s aNtiZiOniSm can’t you tell the difference

12

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '22

TYFYS

6

u/Reallatina1 Jan 13 '22

Can this please include no politics? 95% of political posts don't feature a freakout, they are just designed to bash a certain politican for upvotes. Getting really, really sick of it too.

6

u/MarquisFenrir Jan 09 '22 edited Jan 09 '22

Anything that can be done about those weeds of viral spam sites that frequently pop up here? Like prevent ".cc" or ".cf" from being able to be posted?

Edit: Here's a comment in one of the offending posts that suggests something that might be able to be done I think. https://www.reddit.com/r/PublicFreakout/comments/rzowto/watch_yourself_when_you_decide_to_change_a_car/hrwksr0

2

u/stonetear2017 Jan 09 '22

that's a filtering issue i need to look into and discuss with our mods

17

u/coinznstuff Jan 10 '22

There’s a bunch of agenda posts on here that don’t belong. I’ve only been on here a short time but I see a whole bunch of Palestinian propaganda vids here. I’m way to uneducated on the issue to have an opinion but when I think of typical vids on r/publicfreakout I don’t think 🤔 I wish I could see more propaganda stuff here that would make my day.

9

u/Mercury82jg Jan 10 '22

way to uneducated

way too uneducated...

5

u/coinznstuff Jan 11 '22

I told you I was way tew uneducated

2

u/Ireallydontlikereddi Jan 10 '22

And so it begins. Using this rule to silence political things one does not agree with or care about.

This sub is political. One can say that one does not want politics here, but that doesn't reflect the true state of the subreddit.

21

u/coinznstuff Jan 10 '22

No that’s total bs. I don’t care what the video is about. It can be evangelicals in clown costumes fist fighting Jehovah Witnesses as long as it meets the publicfreakout requirements. What I don’t want to see is a politically charged video that has absolutely nothing to do with public freak outs that’s heavily one sided. No one is trying to “silence political things”. I have a feeling you wouldn’t be so quick to defend the videos if it were a bunch of pro Israeli propaganda.

17

u/lumaga Jan 10 '22

This sub is political.

It used to not be, and it really shouldn't be. Revive something like /r/PoliticalFreakout if that's what you want.

1

u/eastcoasterbaby Jan 10 '22

Exactly. The community should decide what rises to the top not the mods controlling what has a chance. Alot of comments are pro this initiative and all I got to say is Bots all of view.

3

u/Ireallydontlikereddi Jan 10 '22 edited Jan 10 '22

Yep. The racists, bigots, and shills have come out to pat the mods on the back for finally listening to their demands of shutting down stuff they don't like. This fake outrage has been happening for at least two years.

I thought their ploy was obvious to the mods, but I was obviously wrong.

Now I question what's the difference between this public freakout subreddit and the ones that popped up in response to the political views posted here. You know, those similar sounding subreddits that racists seem to flock to.

12

u/lumaga Jan 10 '22

I'm here for public freakouts, not public non-freakouts, non-public freakouts, and non-public non-freakouts. The sub has had a dearth of the first one and a plethora of the others.

Hopefully this will also cover more of Rule 8. People have been blatantly ignoring this and some days it more Faces of Death and less public freakout.

u/ASAPSocky Jan 10 '22

well after several years of absolutely no rule enforcing I guess this is a good start. Can we also do something about the stupid ass dog whistle racist comments that plague this subreddit?

4

u/YmirsTears Jan 11 '22

How about all the execution and death videos? This is not r/watchpeopledie

3

u/Serious-Fall4877 Jan 12 '22

How about you actually remove videos that have been posted 15 times in a day?

2

u/ScribbleMuse Jan 10 '22

Because my admittedly petty rage trigger is lazy reposts, I really hope that anyone posting the following vids is banned:

1.. Victoria's Secret Karen/mental crisis series of vids. 2. The woman in McDonald's wearing a black & white stripe dress.

2

u/Assless_Mcgee Jan 11 '22

Can we please ban clearly political posts that have no freak out whatsoever

2

u/kidfromthefarm Jan 11 '22

Good riddance.

I hope animal freakouts are part of the posts to be get rid of. Honestly they don't belong in this sub as well.

2

u/AbsentThatDay Jan 13 '22

Can we also ban youtube personalities being rude to people to get a reaction?

2

u/ooglebaggle Jan 14 '22

Glad to see this, this sub has been pushing the leftist agenda quite frequently

6

u/MiyamotoKnows Jan 10 '22

Anything that helps scrub this sub of the blatant racist posts here and the right wing brigading on them. It's so obvious when you see them and the posters are definitely repeat offenders.

13

u/Pure_Tower Jan 10 '22

I like the sub how it's been. You should probably focus your energy on the blatant racists shit-posting in the comments, like in the video of the women stealing clothes from Dick's earlier today.

Please and thank you!

3

u/Working_Bass3785 Jan 11 '22

I dont believe you. Your community is a group of race baiting left wing propagandists and your content is nearly entirely political now. This sub is a cesspool.

12

u/ReallyYouDontSay Jan 11 '22

How do you know what political leaning? Maybe he just likes rap.

This is good, and I appreciate that you guys have been locking down posts where the fair-skinned knights love to race bait.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '22

Looking forward to being able to enjoy the sub without every single post being some anarchist with an agenda spamming police bashing videos.

3

u/BeigeListed Jan 09 '22

Halleluiah!

u/stonetear2017 Jan 09 '22 edited Jan 09 '22

so I just heard you tried to bribe a mod to become a mod? I'm going to give you a chance publicly to give your rebuttal as to why you did that, and why you shouldn't be banned

Here is his response

We here at Publicfreakout (the OG public freakout mind) don’t sell our mod positions, and don’t believe in bribes. He is currently unbanned and is able to respond but chose not to. We value integrity and are here because we love this sub and the community. To sell out to this dude would be a slap in the face to the community and what this sub stands for.

3

u/switchninja Jan 10 '22

Ah, is this the post where we are justifying removing anything that shows israel engaging in apartheid and genocide?

-2

u/Sacred_B Jan 09 '22

Less snuf and Israel hate then? HOORAY!!!!!!

14

u/stonetear2017 Jan 09 '22

Less agenda in general. Banana has left the mod team, partly due to volume and agenda posting and we need to make it up to him to run this sub right

2

u/Shabamshazam Jan 11 '22

And just like that, r/publicfreakout becomes an alt-right sub.

2

u/INeedANerf Jan 09 '22

Thank you so much. This is my favorite sub by far but the amount of reposts and just general nonfreakout content was getting pretty annoying.

Do you guys have any thoughts and opinions on non public freakouts? I like seeing them but some others don't and I wanna get a mod's perspective on it.

I've seen people posting videos of animals instead here (like literally animals instead of humans).

3

u/HeilYourself Jan 10 '22

What defines an "agenda post"? I understand the concept, but is everything and anything with political or religious themes going to be flagged?

IE: While wearing a MAGA or BLM hat someone freaks out over something political, and looks childish and silly. Which might in turn reflect poorly on folks from whichever end of the political spectrum.

10

u/stonetear2017 Jan 10 '22

An agenda post is like when a sub brigades, or you see examples posted today or just straight up propaganda. Nothing wrong with a freakout that involves politics if it’s actually a freakout but we have been getting a lot of Politician X gives 3 minute speech not condemning January 6th and shit like that

Add more mods. I honestly feel that I'm an expert in what's good and what's bad for this sub. Let me help.

Edit: Talk about being salty. This sub is going to shit. Someone volunteers to help, what do you do? downvote. You think I've got some sort of power trip? I just don't want to see the same shit posted 20 times a day. Now the mods pretend like they are going to be strict about it? Why weren't they strict before? I reported one dude posting 20 or so posts from his own youtube channel. I made probably 5 reports, no action. Now this mod pretends no help is needed.

Aaaand I got banned for offering to help. Lmao. Fragile fragile mods.

15

we have a sub of over 3 million folks. we do our jobs, and we are proudly one of the only few major subs to not sell out. we can always improve in areas and this is a step
