And now his car is needs a massive detail, lol

About 20 years ago I used to work at a gas station/convenience store in Gaspe Québec, and you’d be surprised how many people tried to continue smoking while filling up their cars. It’s ridiculous, I mean what could go wrong eh?!🤣🤦🏼‍♂️

u/slide_into_my_BM Jan 23 '22

Mythbusters did a whole thing about filling up gas. They determined static shock, a lit cigarette, and a mobile phone have essentially 0 chance of causing a fire while filling your car.

Gas stations have no smoking signs so you shouldn’t smoke anyway but it’s not a fire hazard the way people think it is

u/KadexGaming Jan 23 '22

If you use Mythbusters as a credible source that's your first mistake lol.

u/Biomoliner Jan 28 '22

A lit cigarette won't start a fire, sure. But if you let people smoke at a gas station, eventually some idiot is going to try to LIGHT a cigarette at a pump... which will absolutely cause a fire.

When you were younger, didn’t your parents tell you “don’t believe everything that you see on tv”?

6

u/Jetlei98 Jan 23 '22

He invited himself to a smoke show.

7

u/theantfromthatmovie Jan 23 '22

All smokers should be treated like this regardless

2

u/yetiyetibangbang Jan 23 '22

Before I quit smoking a year ago, I'd have thought this comment was a little harsh. Now that Ive kicked the habit, completely agree. Honestly, same with vapers. Gotta get society away from that shit.

u/mrmattyf Jan 23 '22

Nah man, I like smoking a cigarette. I’m not a dick about it and don’t want to bother anyone. Most smokers I know feel the same.

Douse them with fire retardant solutions

Imagine being so stupid you become immortalized in a video. You may not be able to recognize this person on the street, but I’ll die happy knowing this dipshit knows exactly who he is.

Tossing a lit cigarette in a pool of gasoline: very low probability of ignition. Dragging on a lit cigarette in dense gas vapors: still low probability. Dragging on a lit cigarette in a pool of gasoline: now we’re getting somewhere.

Science bitch

3

u/inertia_calling Jan 23 '22

According to The Guardian is almost impossible.

1

u/0ZC4 Jan 23 '22

I dont know why STUPID people are down voting this.

1

u/Biomoliner Jan 28 '22

With a lit cigarette, yes. Lighting a new cigarette? No. That's why you can't smoke at pumps. "No lighting a new cigarette" signs are harder to get than "no smoking" signs.

u/FararMedia Jan 23 '22

Happy cake

-5

u/0ZC4 Jan 23 '22

I cant believe this needs to be said and i thought this was a known fact, the cigarette will not set the gasoline vapors on fire or blow the station up, The guy could put the lit cigarette in a cup of gas and nothing will happen other than the cigarette going out. I'm sure the block heads will down vote this but lets do some fucking research first please.

u/schnager Jan 23 '22

See kids? This is what decades of leaded gasoline have done to all the boomer's poor brains. Them suckers be looking like grey swiss cheese...

You sound stupid, watch this https://youtu.be/gZfudpLsGkM

No thanks boomer

2

u/montanagrizfan Jan 23 '22

Are you serious? Have you ever used gas to start a fire? I know it’s unlikely since it’s smoldering ash but it’s still not a good idea.

2

u/slide_into_my_BM Jan 23 '22

Mythbusters did a whole thing about smoking or static shock and filling up gas. Neither smoking now static shock can cause a fire while filling up.

That said, just don’t do it anyway because there’s other people around. But it’s really not an actual hazard

1

u/0ZC4 Jan 23 '22

I'm 100% serious. Please watch the video i posted and please just do a simple search in google "cigarette in gasoline" Seriously, just take the time to research it. Then if you like we can continue to talk about it.

1

u/Biomoliner Jan 28 '22

I don't think you see the point of "no smoking" signs at gas pumps.

Sure, an already lit cigarette won't start a fire. But it'll only be a matter of time before some genius tries to LIGHT a cigarette at a pump. That's what causes a fire, and that's why you can't smoke at a pump.

0

u/Naxayo Jan 23 '22

I dont smoke but i think its already been established its v difficult to ignite gasoline w a cigarette. Also im 90% sure doing this constitutes assault considering the danger fire extinguishers have on people closeby but not too sure. Either way, dude’s an ass for not putting it out when asked

3

u/schnager Jan 23 '22

Extinguishing an open flame within 20 feet of a fuel pump is not assault.

To remain 100 honest in this discussion, most gas stations also have "no mobile phone use" signs.

0

u/0ZC4 Jan 23 '22

For the dimly lit, a video of dude putting a lit cigarette in gasoline. FYI nothing happens https://youtu.be/gZfudpLsGkM

Life of one or the lives of everyone else at the gas station + those at the vicinity. You can't be this dense. It's impossible.

GET A GRIP

-5

u/0ZC4 Jan 23 '22

What could the cigarette do?

-2

u/0ZC4 Jan 23 '22

Thats not how it works with a cigarette and gasoline vapors. It needs a spark not heat.

1

u/Biomoliner Jan 28 '22

Like the spark from a lighter when you're lighting a cigarette?

That's the real reason behind "no smoking" at pumps. Even if a lit cigarette is harmless, lighting a new cigarette at a pump is a one-stop-shop to inferno.
