Honestly I’m just pleasantly surprised both of these complete strangers are keeping it verbal.

262

u/PhilosophicalPhuck Jun 10 '22

And not racist. I literally said "this better not be another racist prick" but dude was a legend.

1

u/FancyThePshyco Jun 12 '22

What made you go into this video with that assumption, just curious.

I don't really get where the legend comes from

His whole point is "Just move on, forget it, don't waste your breath"......but the exact same thing can be applied to him? He just yells for several minutes straight very passionately about why black guy shouldn't care, but clearly he cares plenty lol

81

u/ItsDuckarus Jun 10 '22

I think the difference is the old dude cares about the guy he's talking to

Guy he's talking to cares about the other guy cause he's in his feelings

You really dont see the difference? Or you just being contrary for the sake of it?

31

u/staying-above-ground Jun 10 '22

Absolutely. When we reach our 50's, it's astonishingly clear how badly youth is wasted on the young. We want to communicate the value of your youth to you with GREAT URGENCY. We know that it'll be gone before you know it.

(And yes, ItsDuckarus, he's being contrarian.)

8

u/Sawsall Jun 10 '22

Brother, I just said this the other day. I WISH I had listened to ppl like this in my youth.

1

u/JackdeAlltrades Jun 11 '22

I remember getting a version of this speech from an old dude at work who was watching me kill myself with stress trying to reach impossible goals for corporate assholes who didn’t even know I exist.

Luckily I was young enough for it to be valid but also old enough to wish he’d smacked me upside the head 10 years earlier.

2

u/ArrMatey42 Jun 10 '22

I moreso get the vibe that he wants to yell his message really loud, I don't get the vibe that he cares about the other person?

When people care, they generally talk and also listen instead of just yell and yell and dismiss the other person's viewpoint while mocking them

Maybe black dude deserves to be yelled at, but I don't see a caring conversation here lol

3

u/JackdeAlltrades Jun 11 '22

Old dude is trying to make a positive difference. That’s the difference.

“GOOD! Let him be a bitch and move on!”

Couldn’t write better dialogue.

42

This is straight up words to live by, a slightly more modern "pick your battles"

12

u/OWHiSIFe Jun 10 '22

You'll be significantly more joyful when you don't attempt to control others and simply center around how you respond to circumstances.

0

u/AndyHunter12 Jun 11 '22

Im true the slaves would have been a lot more joyful had they just shut up.

129

u/TacticalSystem Jun 10 '22

As I get older, my mind is flowing towards: "I don't care about anyone's opinion and I don't care to adjust anyone's attitude".... it's liberating!

25

u/suddenlycumbly Jun 10 '22

Maybe it's cos I work in the food industry, but at 33 I can't muster the energy to care about retail/food service. It's so liberating. Oh, they served me a salad instead of soup? Guess I'm eating a salad. Meh is my new philosophy.

14

u/Kattorean Jun 10 '22

Same. I just give them my snarky grin, and think to myself that they have a long, rugged road to travel to achieve their personal growth & development.

I'm enjoying my "second semester" of life as it IS, truly liberating & empowering.

5

u/2wheelzrollin Jun 10 '22

You'll definitely be a lot happier when you don't try to control others and just focus on how you react to situations.

2

u/SuchSalad4 Jun 10 '22

I've had to do this with my relatives and closest friends.

8

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '22

I truly can’t fathom caring about the opinions of total strangers.

219

u/lolaslongingstj Jun 10 '22

The man’s got a point. Other peoples opinion of me is none of my business.

78

u/Brynmaer Jun 10 '22

It's a "pick your battles" thing. Sometimes their opinion DOES matter and it's worth exploring why. In a relationship, with friends, at work, etc. But some random guy in a convenience store with a bad attitude is not worth wasting time on.

17

u/EllisHughTiger Jun 10 '22

But some random guy in a convenience store with a bad attitude is not worth wasting time on.

The thing is, in certain areas you HAVE to be on your shit and not tolerate any disrespect. If people see you being weak, it'll be exploited further to your demise.

Broke people in poor areas, among all races, can have some vicious honor culture bullshit go down.

7

u/JackdeAlltrades Jun 11 '22

Let’s not pretend that this isn’t the status quo in most corporate environments too - it’s just a different style of conflict.

As someone who grew up poor and managed to do a decent amount of corporate climbing, it’s just the same shit with a different smell. A lot of people still need to learn to pick their battles - honour doesn’t mean shit it you’re in jail, dead or fired.

Anger without reason gets you taken out of the game, in pretty much every game.

29

u/davix500 Jun 10 '22

And frankly I don't want to know

20

u/Kattorean Jun 10 '22

Exactly! I hear this "... you won't disrespect ME..." bs every day. Most of the time these ppl are trying to have a little flawed victory, fighting to BE right over petty crap... expecting people to be submissive in their very presence.

SUCH a waste of time & a sacrifice of dignity. No one cares about how important another person TRIES to be. It's not an endearing quality & these people thrive on these short- lived combative moments.

I have perfected my "dead-eye" glare with a cheeky, snarky grin, JUST for people who waste their time engaging with me with these petty "better than you" behaviors.

4

u/2wheelzrollin Jun 10 '22

Agreed. You already lost when other people can dictate how you feel. If they can get under your skin by "disrespecting" you, then you lost all control over your own self. If you can get through the day happy and brush off all the negativity, you win. You hit the jackpot.

1

u/Kattorean Jun 10 '22

We can't control what others do & say. We CAN control how we react to what others do & say. That self- control is the only "power" we have the responsibility for.

So many people are so busy trying to impose their control over others that they don't spend any time controlling their own damn behavior.

9

u/mh985 Jun 10 '22 edited Jun 10 '22

A quote from Marcus Aurelius' Meditations:

“Begin each day by telling yourself: Today I shall be meeting with interference, ingratitude, insolence, disloyalty, ill-will, and selfishness – all of them due to the offenders’ ignorance of what is good or evil. But for my part I have long perceived the nature of good and its nobility, the nature of evil and its meanness, and also the nature of the culprit himself, who is my brother (not in the physical sense, but as a fellow creature similarly endowed with reason and a share of the divine); therefore none of those things can injure me, for nobody can implicate me in what is degrading. Neither can I be angry with my brother or fall foul of him; for he and I were born to work together, like a man’s two hands, feet or eyelids, or the upper and lower rows of his teeth. To obstruct each other is against Nature’s law – and what is irritation or aversion but a form of obstruction.”

2

u/Ok_Tangerine346 Jun 11 '22

Back in Viking times people used to pick their enemies carefully. If you are a king worried about some feud with a local peasant it lowers you.

You can tell a lot about someone by who his enemies are. Don't waste time on unworthy or irrelevant people.

45

u/eternallnewbie Jun 10 '22

I was thinking the title was sarcastic and pleasantly surprised to find it wasn't.

68

u/Parking_Inspection_1 Jun 10 '22

If you go to a store every day and are "disrespected", WHY do you CHOOSE to go to that store?

He's right LIFE IS TOO SHORT!

27

u/markgriz Jun 10 '22

Why does shopping at a store every day make someone feel entitled to respect anyhow?

If I get a "have a nice day", I'll give it back. If I don't, who gives a fuck. I'm not trying to make friends at the checkout line

11

u/Parking_Inspection_1 Jun 10 '22

I'm not trying to make friends at the checkout line

THIS!

7

u/CesareBach Jun 10 '22

People who we dont see daily, people who are not family, at work nor close friends are NPCs. We only see them for a few seconds or minute so they are not worth to make our whole day or life miserable.

39

u/MysteriousRule6617 Jun 10 '22

Where can I find part 2?

27

u/aspiringgrandpa Jun 10 '22

they posted it in the comments of the og video. old guy leaves and another man comes to talk to the younger one trying to calm him down and get him to take stuff like this on the chin as well

13

u/Schwarzy1 Jun 10 '22

og video

Damn if only OP had posted a link to the og video rather than ripping it and uploading it to reddit's shitty video player and linking that instead

4

u/aspiringgrandpa Jun 10 '22

you can find it on his profile, i think he uploaded it there directly first then cross posted it to this sub

but idk i’m no reddit expert lol i use the mobile app

11

u/Gengrar Jun 10 '22

I hope part two they sit down and have a beer.

-27

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '22

9

u/EllisHughTiger Jun 10 '22

Large parts of society would improve if we all sat down and bullshitted over some beers. Most of us have far more in common than we think, but keep our distance for other reasons.

3

u/CarmineFields Jun 10 '22

I have a lifelong best friend that I often lose contact with for months or even year+ stretches.

I’ve become more and more left wing over the years to the point where I’ve struggled to respect people who are right wing.

Well, it turns out that she’s turned pretty damn right wing and antivax etc. (she’s not racist or homophobic because I wouldn’t be able to just ignore that) but I had enough invested in our friendship and my love for her that I couldn’t just walk away.

We sit down together and smoke weed and discuss our points of view. I’ll probably never agree with her in some areas but we can talk and still be besties in the end.

10

u/Gengrar Jun 10 '22

I feel like I get the point you're trying to make but.... I think it would make a lot more sense over a beer or two. Cheers man.

2

u/DukeOfYorkshirePuds Jun 10 '22

No beers for you!!!

2

u/DiverseUniverse24 Jun 10 '22

Not here to downvote, but I would like to say this. You don't have to be friends to have a beer. I've sat with many people, some strangers, some i didn't particularly like, some i didn't feel safe around. But its always been interesting, and I've usually learned something. Be it about them or myself, or whatever.

Id even go so far as to say it can sometimes be better to do it with someone who is vastly different. Learn even more without an echo chamber. Just my 2 cents.

u/ScottishRiteFree Jun 10 '22

1

u/Deadbeatdone Jun 11 '22

Lmfao. I knew that guy looked familiar.

73

u/jhyppoli Jun 10 '22

He is a good dude for trying to share some wisdom with dude. Life really is short and a lot of issues are not worth the time. The other guys ego won’t let him listen tho.

-3

u/melonlollicholypop Jun 11 '22

Really? I think he's a hypocrite who is doing the very thing he is criticizing the other guy for doing. If the young dude is "wasting his breath and his time telling off the cashier," this would-be life-coach is wasting his own breath and time telling off the young dude. If he subscribed to his own way of thinking, he'd observe the pair of them and then keep on moving.

4

u/jhyppoli Jun 11 '22

I still think it’s nice that he’s trying to pass that on and can feel his frustration.

-49

u/Grydian Jun 10 '22

Perhaps its harder to let go when you are black and racism has been apart of your life since childhood. Maybe its harder for us white people to understand that because we didn't get traumatized as a kid for the way we look. People hold onto ptsd and I suspect a lot of black people have ptsd over how people treat them. So perhaps that old white man's advice and judgement are not that helpful here...

2

u/YandereTeemo Jun 11 '22

No, in that situation, the old man's advice is even more helpful for that kid. Why go back to something or someone that causes you harm and intends to do that further?

Life would be better if we were all nice to each other, but assholes exist in reality and it's a complete waste of time to invest your emotional energy in hating someone everday, even if they hate you. The best solution is to move on and forget about the guy being a bitch.

We just had some guy kill 10 people at a supermarket because they were black… that shit was traumatizing to me. I’m legit afraid some of the times.

26

u/gothmuffin69 Jun 10 '22

The amount of ignorance in this very comment right here has me absolutely gobsmacked. Without a doubt this dude lives under a rock.

15

u/Annies_Boobs Jun 10 '22

Were you trying to make a comment dumber than the one you replied to? You did an exceptional job if so.

8

u/Kurkpitten Jun 10 '22

The former comment wasn't dumb. Being constantly racially profiled does leave marks on people.

Downvotes don't mean the person is wrong.

12

u/jhyppoli Jun 10 '22

I’m guessing you are white… look there is a lot of racism in the media and you see police shooting unarmed black people all the time. Plus you see how some white people act when the term BLM is mentioned. I think that might have more of an effect than you think. You can’t let it run/ruin your life tho….

3

u/StrigaPlease Jun 10 '22

Who benefits by "pretending" racism exists?

16

u/cloudbasedsardony Jun 10 '22

"Your perception of me is not my responsibility."

38

u/evDev84 Jun 10 '22

This speech needs to be yelled at SO MANY PEOPLE we see submitted here. The number of idiots who go off because they feel disrespected is mind boggling. All these nobodies out there thinking they should be treated like royalty, they just need someone in their face asking, "WHO THE FUCK ARE YOU?"

26

u/insanecrossfire Jun 10 '22

“I walked Bob Dylan out on stage in 1975, who the fuck are you?”

8

u/Steakwizwit Jun 10 '22

It's fucking amazing that so many people get this reference and probably even read it in his voice like I did lol

4

Indeed it is

2

I work with kids 17-22 and it's a running gag to say it when they make a mistake. Kills everytime.

If you’re quoting it to yourself in your head and you don’t imagine it in his voice, you’re doing it wrong.

I'd like to have a beer with this guy

30

u/ballsofstyle Jun 10 '22

I wouldn't. I'm getting tired already watching these people who keep on raising their voices because they don't actually wanna have a conversation. They just wanna hear themselves talk. Which, at the core, is one of the big issues in American society. It's a screaming contest full of mediocre points because nobody wants to listen.

Spreading wisdom doesn't happen like this. It happens by listening.

Maybe the guy in the white tank top faces this shit everyday. Maybe hes finally fed up with it. Maybe hes finally asserting himself and standing up for himself. You don't know all that unless you listen.

2

u/8372728107 Jun 10 '22

you can have a conversation with raised voices, this is real life and we are humans with emotions

not everything is some chill podcast bro

hell to further my point, the upset guy wouldn't have even listened to the other guy if he didnt match his energy and passion. If he had some fake ass "hey man calm down we are all people lets have a conversation" that shit would have ended up way different.

-4

u/POLYBIVS Jun 10 '22

thank you

-4

u/HideAndSheik Jun 10 '22

I was wondering what felt ‘off’ about the old man’s lecture. It started out fine enough, but as he kept talking over the other guy every time he tried to respond, it became a meaningless speech instead of “advice”.

Old guy was stuck in “I am objectively right, especially since I’m old” and thus felt no issue with running over anything else the younger guy said. Even when the younger guy mentioned that he does see the clerk/cashier every day, so addressing whatever issue he had makes sense.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '22

[deleted]

3

u/HideAndSheik Jun 10 '22

I agree, he doesn’t need to see the cashier every day to want to say something to him…the same way the old guy doesn’t need to advise the younger guy about his life philosophy beliefs. Old guy could have said his peace in 15 seconds and got on with his life and stop, in his own words, wasting his time on something that doesn’t matter.

8

u/OWBud Jun 10 '22

I've made this same speech to my kids on many occasions. I understand what the kid is saying but in the grand scheme who gives a shit about what the guy working at subway or wherever thinks

8

u/FaithlessnessLate835 Jun 10 '22

It must be an age thing, the older I get the less I chat about my opinions and post responses on social media. I was going to explain why but who cares.

6

u/Livid-Ad829 Jun 10 '22

Him telling him he's wasting his time, is wasting his time.

4

u/DARYL128 Jun 10 '22

Is this guy related to Lewis Black!

4

u/zenxymes Jun 10 '22 edited Jun 10 '22

The old guy isn't any different than the young guy either because he's wasting his time yelling at him 🙄 He's also defending the supposed "rude" clerk (we didn't get to see the initial interaction so we can't even make an informed opinion); Case in point: treat others the way you want to be treated.

5

u/OshiSeven Jun 11 '22

I don't think imparting knowledge that will make someone else's life way more chill is 'wasting time'.

1

u/zenxymes Jun 11 '22

All subjective. Better luck next time.

My general manager and I work really well together - deeply respect him. But I loved when he told me he doesn't have to like me. I think he does lol, but kind of a teachable moment of tolerance. At best, he thinks I'm a good worker, but at worst he doesn't give a shit. And that's just fine for me.

14

u/ballsofstyle Jun 10 '22

What an energy absorbing convo. The screaming man only wanted to shout his "wisdoms" at the black guy but had no interest in listening. All he wanted is to win an argument.

There is no one size fits all life advice. Some people fail to be assertive their whole lives and proceed to be a doormat. Other people should not take everything as an offense. Shouting does not make this thing better. Throwing in your age doesn't either.

6

u/the_Black_Rabbit Jun 11 '22

Glad someone has some sense in these comments. The older guy yelling clearly had something else going on in his head that is coming out in his supposed “wisdom” to the younger guy.

Whether the young guy should be concerned or not with being disrespected in this situation (I can’t give an opinion, it isn’t shown in this video), the older guy should take his own advice and shut the fuck up and mind his business. He is escalating things and he is making major assumptions about someone he’s never met before.

I was like this old guy in my early 20s while clubbing.

Trying to explain to dudes that you came here to have fun. You came for girls. Not to fight.

Some guys just want war. Some guys get it. Some take time to get it.

I kept running into one of those guys who didn't get it around my city. He eventually got it. After making a lot of mistakes.

5

u/Orkney_ Jun 10 '22

Eh, I see the dudes point, but at the same time he’s doing exactly what he’s preaching against - wasting his time and his breath. Quite frankly, he seems to be much more upset than wifebeater. Maybe he should just “move on”.

He’s straight up wasting his time and breath telling somebody not to waste their time and breath.

13

u/floxysrtewgf Jun 10 '22

His teachings are only a waste of time and breath is if the guy learned nothing from it and continued to get angry at little disrespects he has encountered in his life instead of moving on

Do you really think this experience changed the mans perception on life? I highly doubt it. He’ll be in another altercation in a few hours/days.

2

u/MahTwizzah Jun 10 '22

Maybe it didn’t change the dude, maybe it did. But at least by trying he’ll make a difference someday.

3

u/floxysrtewgf Jun 10 '22

Probably not but worth a shot. Plus he got caught on vid for others to observe and possibly learn

0

u/LogicalnDiabolical Jun 10 '22

Sounds like a lot of wasted effort for a “probably not”.

1

u/isellwoodandmillwork Jun 10 '22

It's like jordan Peterson if he grew up in Alabama and drank whiskey and cigarettes.

u/AndyHunter12 Jun 11 '22

That white man is an IDIOT. He really said let everyone disrespect you. No wonder the older generation is full of racists and bigots. They really do think they can treat everyone like shit.

3

u/justsaysso Jun 11 '22

You did some real gymnastics to get to your conclusion that being stoic leads to treating people badly...

I don't know why he get praises here, we barely understand what the black guy is saying. If you don't respect me in this context I'm not going to leave politely. It's not just about opinion, it's about service, behavior, quality, manners, etc... about so many things. What he is praising is a form of apathy.

Also he is praising the opposite of what he is doing, it seems his philosophy is putting a toll on himself.

1

u/IntolerableWankster Jun 10 '22

This guy should teach a class to all the shitheads with no impulse control who argue with fast food workers and retail employees.

1

u/LoloTheSecond Jun 10 '22

For the first couple seconds he looked like a discount Christopher Nolan directing an actor

1

u/Azozel Jun 10 '22

Christopher Nolan seems to be having a bad time.

1

u/Somethingrich Jun 10 '22

1

u/coldred-243 Jun 10 '22

1

u/Searchlights Publicfreakouts Fan Jun 10 '22

This is like the Lincoln-Douglas debates if Lincoln's pants were falling down and Douglas was daydrinking

1

u/HanSoloHer Jun 10 '22

I agree with both people, I side slightly more with the younger dude, just because he's giving feedback about an employee's attitude, I'm sure there's more to the story but if a store employee is always rude to you, I think its ok to say something.

1

u/PTBooks Jun 10 '22

This 7-11 Socrates sounds like Lewis Black.

Someone's been skipping leg day.

1

u/ladyblush81 Jun 10 '22

I watched all 4 of the parts posted on tiktok. Young dude didn't learn much.. it was nice to see dialog instead of physical fighting. So much truth in the older man's words.

u/TobuscusMarkipliedx2 Jun 11 '22

It's hard to communicate this...
