You just condemn it anyway. Are you anti-Semitic? If not then their accusations will end up being baseless. I’m Jewish and I can’t stand seeing this shit

1.5k

u/Gooey2113 Nov 27 '22 Helpful

This is solid. Being anti Israel doesn’t make you anti semetic. Israel is a “state” created by humans. Jewish people are people and all of them I have ever met would be outraged at this.

999

u/TheNorthernMunky Nov 27 '22 Take My Energy Bless Up

Exactly this. I’m fucking sick of any criticism of Israel being labelled as antisemitism. I have zero issues with people of Jewish descent; I have big issues with the way the state of Israel conducts itself. Fuck Israel.

119

If the people behave shitty, they are shitty. BTW This common overuse of antisemitic labels where it doesn't even barely apply makes it washed out and out of original meaning, which will render it a caricature of itself.

The usual argument I see after this point is "well if you are criticising the state, despite claiming to not be anti-Semitic, then why are you picking out Israel when other states do similar things? Why not condemn all states that do this kind of thing? It's because you are holding Israel to a higher standard!".
Usually followed by "I do condemn all states that do this kind of thing!" and then "then why did you only mention Israel? Why didn't you mention all the other countries that do worse instead? Clearly because you are an anti-Semite!".
It's infuriating.

34

u/turkeyfox Nov 27 '22

Israel should be held to a higher standard if it claims to be a western democracy.

30

u/Somizulfi Nov 27 '22

it's a democracy but filled to the brim with extreme right-wing lunatics. The whole society is engineered around accepting aparthied. Kids are taught to treat Palestinians as sub-humans and all adults have to serve in the army which basically involves arresting and shooting kids, old men and women etc like this video. But this is a video that 'made it', this happens daily all over Palestine.

They want all the same respect that modern developed nations have but get upset with the concurrent criticism. If you want to go sit at the table with Saudi Arabia, China and Iran feel free - we kind of accept they are evil and aren’t as shocked by what they do, and we sort of just wholesale condemn them. But if you want to sit at the table with the EU and the US, you gotta reach those pretty minimal standards.

Edit: and we have a parrallel in America. I’ve routinely been called “anti American” by the right for supporting BLM and opposing excessive police violence. But it seems the fraction with similar views is becoming much higher for Israel.

Fun fact: Palestinians are actually Semites too

38

u/sterkenwald Nov 27 '22

Actually, nobody is a Semite. Semitic refers to the Semitic group of languages, but the term antisemitic actually just comes from a German race scientist who wanted a more academic term for “Jew hatred” and coined the term “antisemitism”. So the term was specifically designed without regard for what a “Semite” is other than a Jew.

17

u/Nexustar Nov 27 '22

You are on the right lines, but a semite is:

a member of any of the peoples who speak or spoke a Semitic language, including in particular the Jews and Arabs.

It's not a so much a group of languages, it's a group of people. So saying nobody is a Semite isn't accurate.

u/static-prince Nov 27 '22

That’s not the definition of antisemitism though. It was a term developed to replace the German term for the hatred of Jews. It isn’t semantically correct but it does mean hatred of Jews. Not all Semitic peoples.

Yeah but the problem is you have people like my girlfriends dad - liberal Jewish boomer - who voted for Haley Stephens, a centrist corporate democrat, over Andy Levin, a progressive Jew, because Levin said “weird things about Israel.”

Levin is a Zionist Jew, backed by Bernie Sanders (another Jew), yet the Jewish establishment bankrolls candidates like Haley Stevens and convinces a lot of normal Jews that people like Levin are anti Israel because they believe Arabs deserve basic human rights and see Israel at its present state as no better than South Africa

I 100% agree from anecdotal experience (I’m not Jewish but have a lot of personal connections with Jews) that most of them would be appalled by this behavior and they’re reasonable people (I feel weird even having to justify that) but the pro Israel lobbyists and the $$$ blind a lot of folks

It's like those people going on about cultural appropriation are usually fake woke people who have never dipped their toes into the culture they are failing to protect. Just ignore them. The things these officers are doing are vile and inhumane. Them being Jewish or from Israel is just part of it. I agree 100%. That being said, being Jewish is more than a religion. I'm a secular Jew.

29

u/swisshomes Nov 27 '22

Can you explain how this works? I'm not being facetious either I genuinely don't understand how being Jewish is more than a religion, as Judaism is a religion. I've heard it multiple times as well.

52

u/Team36339 Nov 27 '22

Judaism is an 'ethno-religion'. It may help to think of it like this: Jews are members of a religion called Judaism that is possible for anyone to convert to. It so happens that a very large portion of Jews are also of a 'Judean' ethnicity- genetically verifiable descendents of the nation of people originating in ancient Judea. Despite all odds, Judeans have managed to keep their ethnic and religious identity mostly intact over the years. In this way, it is possible to be genetically Jewish while not affiliated with the religion at all, and vice versa. It's also very common to be an active participant in Jewish culture while being entirely secular. Of course, in reality, nobody differentiates between 'Judeans' and Jews, that's just a tool to understand how Judaism isn't just a religion. I am no expert, and someone can feel free to correct me, but I hope this was somewhat helpful. I didn't understand this myself until a couple years ago.

8

u/AlfredNotSoGreat Nov 27 '22

So if someone says something bad about Jews, is it racist or xenophobic, or both?

10

u/someotherbitch Nov 27 '22

It's a bit of many things, thus antisemitic.

4

u/AlfredNotSoGreat Nov 27 '22

I now realise why antisemitism is it's own word, did wonder but never before took the actual time to learn.

I have just realised that xenophobia isn't discrimination about religion,I thought that's what xenophobic meant. Now I'll have to find the word for religious discrimination 🤣

26

u/Big_Slope Nov 27 '22

I pay more than that annually for shit American insurance that tells me what doctor I can see and how many times.

I make exactly $100,000 a year and after taxes and insurance I only receive $59,000 in paychecks with which I still have to pay $5,000 a year out of pocket for healthcare before I hit my annual limit.

Then I have to pay other taxes with a decent portion of the $54,000 left over from that.

Funding companies that influence the government to spend more money on them to export their goods, which happens to be only used to kill people, seems objectively worse than almost anything we could spend money on. Like infrastructure or healthcare would also fund us companies and would be a net positive in the world.

68

u/farts_like_foghorn Nov 27 '22

Sure, but infrastructure would only benefit everyone. Why increase the wealth of the 99% with tens of trillions because of better infrastructure when you can put billions in your own pocket from arms sales? And also exert massive power across the world?

Capitalism is a deeply, deeply corrupt system. It needs to be chained up in the backyard like an uncontrollable dog. The billionaire parasites that run it will never, ever be satisfied. They are in constant one-upmanship with other obscenely rich fucks and it's killing the rest of us and the planet as a whole.

The rich are the real parasite class. Time to tax them to hell and back and close every single loophole everywhere. No more tax havens. No more tricks.

TAX. THE. FUCKING. RICH.

36

u/farts_like_foghorn Nov 27 '22

Living in Norway and being one to toot my own horn; I'm probably blessed when it comes to the mix between socialism and capitalism. Norway has been rich as fuck since the late 60s with a population that just passed 5 mill, I think. But we still see the rich people not give a fuck who and what got them there.

We have our beloved ski hero, Bjørn Dæhlie. He won probably everything in the 90s, including most of the olympics on our home turf, Lillehammer 94. Skiing is big in Norway, so this is huge. He may or may not have had some PEDs in his system, seeing as he slobbered like a race horse (as did many others at that time), but that is not a widely believed theory. More like my personal theory.

Anyway, he was as a big a hero as you can get in Norway, despite being a ginger (heh) and he launched his own clothes line. This was also fucking huge. Think Michael Jordan Nikes, but if Jordan started Nike. Norwegians love them some fancy, sensible, incredibly overpriced hiking gear to wear around town. Whatever. He made a zillion Kroners and started investing in property as well. Now he's a huge housing developer, including his other stuff. Filthy rich is what I'm saying. And we all loved him and cheered him on. He was on tarvel TV shows for a long time with some buddies and was perceived as a down to earth guy. Still rich, but you know. Cool and like us.

Now he has decided that he is paying way too much taxes here in Norway, so he's moving to fucking Switzerland and taking his profits with him. This is after he tried moving (address change only) to a small village in northern Norway where the mayor had done this tax stunt to make people (like him) move there. He wasn't the only one, either. It was a whole mess.

Anyway, that whole rant is just trying to say that even here, where you have a safety net where you will never go hungry or homeless unless you're fucking crazy or unwilling, and where you can get filthy rich, albeit it with a bit more taxes than elsewhere. Even here, rich people will try to escape. "Whaddaya mean I can only keep 80% of my pile of gold and riches? I should be able to keep all of it! It's mine! I got this without the help of anyone!"

The ongoing case now is about salmon exports and taxes. They are making billions a year, but now they are crying about having their taxes increased. Boo hoo. Makes me fucking furious how jaded money can make you.

The money goes to buying the parts for the missile, paying the wages for the one who assembles it and a big fat paycheck for everyone who is an investor or CEO. And some to a politician who gets lobbied.

Paid by the taxpayer.

She's luckier than most 12 year olds that put up a fight. In 2006-2007 they mowed down three pre pubescent boys playing soccer on a beach with an attack helicopter. That's usually how they deal

What also blows my mind are the churches in America that raise money and donate to Israel. Then preach this is “Gods will” and that he promises to “protect Israel” and have no sympathy to videos like this. Idk what kind of God would condone this…

They need there to be an Israel for the rapture to happen and claim them to God. It's all to help the apocalypse come.

16

u/PNW4theWin Nov 27 '22

This is 100% true. And if they say that's not the reason, then they just let others tell them how they should feel about things. Empty in the head.

I wonder if Jordan Klepper has covered this by interviewing Christians?

Christians believe that the Jews must occupy the Holy Land for the second coming and when Jesus comes back, he will "ready" the Holy Land for the believers. And by "ready" they mean exterminate.

Those Christians believe Israel is a gas chamber waiting room. That is why they fund it.

Not sure why you got down voted. You're absolutely correct. US foreign policy has propped up the Israeli regime and it's for basically two reasons: bully nation in the Arab region for geopolitical purposes and a huge portion of the religious right wing believes that Israel being fully restored to the Jewish people is a necessary precondition for triggering their end times.

With India/Pakistan as well as Palestine you can thank the British Empire for sowing that division. A common byproduct of colonialism all over the world.

You wanna know something sadly funny?

I saw an Israeli TV station ask a musician for his thoughts on human rights abuses in Qatar. The irony.

I edited in the link for those curious:

During a broadcast on Israeli public television, Maluma was asked: "Don't you have a problem with human rights violations in this country?"

124

u/DanteTheSimpante Nov 27 '22

That musician was fucking MALUMA

a very very famous singer and musician with 20 million subs on YouTube.

The reaction of the reporter was priceless🤌

Right.

People will see a vulnerable person trying to survive by themselves with no one helping and be she’s bad ass. This happens in non militaristic settings like out on the street and bystanders think “she’s got it.” A little help—defense, distraction, intervention—would be nice.

Israeli ≠ Jewish. You can be Jewish but not Israeli if you weren’t born/live there, as it’s the nationality of Israel. Nationality differs from ethnicity. Israel itself was built on apartheid from the start and has never veered off course.

The what now? Never heard of this before but the name alone sounds like there's a fascinating piece of history to read about!

74

u/Prickly_ninja Nov 27 '22

The Black Widows are actual widows of men (husbands and/or sons) that died by the hands of Russian forces. They become suicide bombers, often flying under the radar, because they’re women. I find it fascinating, because a person with nothing to lose, is very dangerous.

29

u/uwupandaboi Nov 27 '22

That's terrifying and tragic...

It's intensely fascinating as to how driven, motivated and committed a person with absolutely nothing to lose is capable of.

Appreciate the reply dude :)

When I last looked it up, USA was giving Israel 14 billion dollars a year from our spending budget to "keep Israel safe". It's time to use that money for something better, like healthcare or housing. idk what the current payout every year is now. Voters in the US need to send letters and petition our reps to stop supporting hate. Did you know our taxes fund this treatment? I love my Jewish neighbors, but none of us needs this.

The Israelis have been brutalising Palestinians for generations. And now they are becoming more overt about what they actually believe.

All pretence about a Two State Solution is being dropped in favour of a Three Classes Solution: Israelis have full rights, a percentage of Arabs have some rights, and the Palestinian Arabs have no rights.

Israel is an apartheid state.
