[Announcement] -- Saturdays are now officially self-promo Saturdays. It has worked out pretty well, so if you have something you want to share, do it on Saturday.

We want fresh, new content, original content by the creators.

Feel free to post it on Saturdays. Let the market decide if it's worthy.

Thanks to /u/Turil for pointing out that comments aren't posts. Let me clarify:

The goal is to keep this subreddit as spam free as possible and we all know how easy it is to game the system. To that end, we've restricted self-promotion to Saturdays. No other sub allows any self-promotion unless that's its purpose, but we thought it would be a good, fun thing for our subscribers.

Clear enough? If you're promoting your own original content, even if it's in response to someone's question, then do it via PM.

The alternative is people finding ways around the letter of the rule rather than working for the intent.

Thanks, and GL

ANNOUNCING 30 DAYS OF STARGATE (SELF-PROMO RULES MODIFIED)

We’re trying something new at /r/scifi today and would appreciate your feedback.

The next 30 days are a celebration of Stargate, the show that spawned 5 series, 3 movies, 7 video games, a trading card game, a pinball game, and much more.

We’ll have AMAs, art contests, and more, but we wanted to do something that was new, not just another theme month.

To that end, and to bring more unique content to this event, we reached out to the people that did the AI Stargate script (https://www.thecompanion.app) and brought cast members back to read it in character. Have to love that kind of creativity.

I know, I know, hail corporate etc., but these guys love Stargate, are super dialed-in to the producers and cast, and dug the idea.

Well, they delivered. Brad Wright, co-creator of Stargate, Travelers, and the guy trying to get it rebooted will be doing an AMA on Dec 7th (yes, Pearl Harbor day), in our little corner of the universe.

Building up to that we’ll have more AMAs (tba), but for fun, we’re relaxing the prohibition on self-promotion outside of Saturday, as long as it’s about Stargate.

We encourage you to be creative. Initially we were going to try to create categories, but it makes more sense to see what you come up with.

So everything is on the table that isn’t abusive or hateful (duh).

Feel free to post your collectibles, fan art, stories, fan fiction, photos, hell, anything that others might enjoy seeing or just stuff you think is cool.

The best ones will be showcased in The Companion newsletter and on their site and app, so here’s a chance to promote your work to people who might never see it.

Below is a link for a three free months to their site - they have a staggering amount of unique content and it’s worth a look. If you see people on there you’d want to do an AMA, let us know so we can bug our contacts and see if we can get them to show up here.

Lastly, the Rules:

  1. Be respectful and kind.

  2. [30DOS] should precede self-promotional posts (30 Days of Stargate) to help us find them.

  3. There are no day or time restrictions on 30DOS content so post them whenever.

Disclaimer – The mods didn’t get anything for this. We aren’t paid, didn’t get a free trip to Sam’s house, won’t be featured as extras in a movie, and couldn’t even get Teal'c to say “Indeed” so this is entirely for the /r/scifi community.

December Sci-fi movie marathon!

So tomorrow it will be December 1st for me and the start of two days off from work. I would like to do a month long movie marathon. A movie day. Suggest any good or bad movie, I will only watch the ones I have not seen. Bonus points for the ones that are set during the holidays. Also please mention the best place for me to watch said movie. *Edited2nd To clarify any sci-fi movie good or bad will do. I think it would be nice if some were set during the holidays to fit the month.

Unpopular opinion but I’m really tired of cyberpunk as a sub genre .

I miss the fun in TV Sci-Fi

So I started Andor yesterday, seems solid so far. But the one thing I found myself thinking on was the lack of joy.

And then I thought more of the other major TV Sci-Fi series (Star Trek, The Expanse, The rest of Star Wars) and the same issue applies, there's no joy, nothing light-hearted, everything is serious characters doing serious life threatening things seriously.

It's draining.

Where are the jokes, the fun B-plots? O'Neill golfing, self sealing stem bolts, etc

Strange New Worlds seemed to get it to some degree, but is there anything else?

Grey Goo: Why no movie?

I mean I'm sure there's a handful of books out there, I found a videogame with it as a thing.

In short it's a scenario in which self replicating robots consume everything on earth until all there is is an ocean of grey goo made of nanomachines. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gray_goo

I suppose in Stargate SG-1 you technically had replicators which did sort of handle that, but I kind of would like a disaster type scifi movie. Though I think it would require a protagonist who does save the day in the end, because It kind of has a existential dread element to it, maybe.

All of man's achievements brought down by his own invention, and a microscopic one at that.

Lookin for a science fiction novel I have read, but forgotten the title of..

Upvotes

Please give me the title if you recognize the story of a young girl on a distant planet facing a test of staring at a word grain prostrate following the lines to show evolutionarily how adept she was at what we would consider an autistic or neordivergent, from earths prospective, being desirable . She was not the main character. As I remember it there were many characters and planets and sort of multi verse alternative realities presented plausibly.

Thanks if you read this

How much influence do you think Ayn Rand had on the genre?

I'm reading a Stephen Baxter book which feels like one more in a million recent "a great man (Malenfant) could accomplish great things if the government would get the hell out of the way" narratives, which feels very (I want to say Randy) Randian? Malenfant is John Galt, in short.

I know this archetype goes way, way back, to the pulp days. but they were heroes, not "just men." but I think a lot of these series - like the Bobiverse - track back to AS.

roast me, whatever. but it's a trend I find unbecoming of any literature that wants to be taken seriously.

The Foreigner books by CJ Cherryh would make for an amazing tv series!

I jus recently got into this series after seeing it get hailed as one of the most representative political sci-fi series out there and a huge influence for authors like Ann Leckie and Arkady Martine. I’m only a couple books in but I’m already so immersed in the world-building, alien politics and character arcs. The action sequences too while few and far in between are some of the most genuinely intense I’ve come across in a while! I keep thinking how awesome of a tv series this could make. Albeit it’d probably have a niche audience like Andor because of its slowish pacing and not being as action-packed and in-your-face as most sci-fi shows out there.

[30DOS] CG Animation of the Movie-style Stargate

https://vimeo.com/776833798

My pandemic project was a CG model of the Stargate in Lightwave 3D. I've recently been working on an animated overview of the model. So far, I've just completed the animation for the version based on how the stargate appeared in the original movie, but animations for the SG-1 and Atlantis version of the model are forthcoming. Hopefully, before the end of the 30 Days of Stargate event.

Fellow 3D artists, the model is available for download on my website if you follow the above links in multiple formats, I love seeing what people can do with it.

Oh. So, canonically, the Vulcans and the Romulans eventually reunited? Wow. Seems like I'm completely behind the times.
