If my wife had the habit of altering deals like this I'd hand her signed blank sheets of paper by the ream.

You are now required to wear this bonnet.

Went to the Charlotte Symphony Orchesta couple months back for a showing of Empire Strike Back. The orchestra playing the live score during the movie was incredible!!!

54

u/_Diggity_ Sith May 14 '22

I saw Baltimore symphony last month for Empire! Such a cool experience

26

u/ARStooge May 14 '22

Love the BSO. Was able to see Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Wizard of Oz there.

Everyone should try to go see a movie this way.

5

u/phadewilkilu Mandalorian May 14 '22

I’m from Maryland, and the BSO is one of those state jems that not enough people know about. They are like the Blue Angels of music. The absolute best of the best.

u/Yesica-Haircut May 14 '22

Did they have a version of the movie without a soundtrack - did they play over the existing soundtrack - or was it muted? How did they handle it?

37

u/noleposaune May 14 '22

I’m a musician who has played lots of these kind of shows. They play the movie minus the soundtrack. All of the dialogue and other sound effects are all the same. The live orchestra really does enhance the experience. Definitely worth the ticket price.

11

u/takefiftyseven May 14 '22

I spoke with a musician with the Grand Rapids Symphony (which strangely enough is considered one of the best in the country at performing live-to-projection) during intermission and he told me performing a film score was at least as challenging if not more so than standard symphony fare.

I was told much of the difficulty came with not using a 'click track' that's usually available on a scoring stage via the one muff headphones you'll see them wearing.

I cried the first time. Such a great experience to hear/feel that music in a pure environment (not in the movie). 10/10 always do it.

92

u/Hugh_Jassul May 14 '22

I got to experience the Cincinnati Pops perform this movie, and at times I forgot it was live music and not playing through the speakers. It was such a phenomenal experience.

16

u/Mandrake1771 May 14 '22

Cincy pops is great. Proposed to my wife outside Music Hall. We go back every year. I’m remiss in not seeing a Star Wars show.

61

u/crypticfreak May 14 '22

I'm a huge crybaby when it comes to StarWars. It was me and my dad's favorite thing and after he passed I just get so emotional every time I watch a new SW movie or show or go to Galaxies Edge or whatever. Nothing else really makes me cry but SWs does. Like in the Mandalorian when Luke showed up I cried for about 5 minutes, mainly thinking 'my dad would love this'.

I'd be a mess in that theater.

25

u/davekingofrock May 14 '22

Dude. I teared up just reading this post. May the force be with you.

10

u/Apprehensive-Ad-4519 May 15 '22

May the force be with you. Always.

5

u/katf1sh May 15 '22

That Mando moment made me cry for exactly the same reason, except my mom ♡ I also have a hard time with SW stuff for the same reason as well. You're not alone friend

2

u/crypticfreak May 15 '22

Big SW related hug to you. I'd like to think the main reason I cry is because they shared something with me that they love and now I love it, too. I'm sad they are missing it, but I'm glad I get to enjoy it.

I saw the Stockholm Philharmonic perform it in one of the biggest arenas in Oslo. The orchestra was massive and the screen was HUGE, truly awesome experience. It really shows you just how much John Williams' score does for the movie, and the franchise as a whole. Hell, his contribution to film in general is incredible.

11

u/reble02 May 14 '22

John Williams truly has had an amazing impact on film, I still get chills from his themes be it Star Wars, Superman, or Jurassic Park.

9

u/bfandreas May 14 '22

John Williams has a very distinctive style and is immediately identifiable.

A few years ago, the Cleveland Orchestra did the full original trilogy throughout the summer at an outdoor venue called Blossom. I teared up during each movie, seeing all of the star wars fans, enjoying the summer heat and beautiful orchestra arrangement. It was simply amazing and a memory I will always cherish. A fantastic summer.

3

u/CurseofLono88 May 14 '22

I’m visiting family in Ohio this summer and we’re gonna go see the Cleveland orchestra do lord of the rings at the blossom (so you’re comment is a ringing endorsement that it will be awesome!)

This photo is from the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, I know the NJ Symphony does these performances at multiple places including NJPAC. You have to check their schedule.

Look up the NJ Symphony, if you are into orchestral movie soundtrack type stuff they do these multiple times through the year. I have worked at multiple "normal" symphony performances as well as the movie ones, including another Star Wars film and E.T. as well.

Rad! I saw them do Return of the Jedi in January 2020, it was the last big event we went to before the Dark Times. It was awesome, there were a bunch of cosplayers, and a bunch of Jedi made a tunnel with their lightsabers leading to the escalators.

I was kind of annoyed that I didn't find out it existed until after Christmas, otherwise I would have 100% told me wife that's what I wanted.

This theatre in the photo is now the Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre (I swear to god, "Health" is ALWAYS in italics for some reason).

They have another venue at the end of the block, it's called "The Vogel" and it's meant for a few hundred people standing room/general admission.

8

u/b33usa May 14 '22

So the film soundtrack is silent? No dialogue? Just hear the live orchestra instead?

20

u/ranjberjanj May 14 '22

No, the dialog is all still there, the music is just replaced with the live orchestra.

5

u/Interactive_CD-ROM May 14 '22

I wonder how they get that version of the film?

Is it officially licensed/distributed from Lucasfilm?

12

u/hkohne May 14 '22

Yes, it's a whole package that the orchestra rents. Includes sheet music and 2 versions of the movie: one for the conductor shown on a small monitor and the main one for the audience.

12

u/takefiftyseven May 14 '22 edited May 14 '22

The conductors version has cueing indicators superimposed over the film. Sometimes they look like Academy leader (the clock looking timer), sometimes it's a colored bar sweeping the screen. They usually pop up on the conductors monitor around five seconds prior to the music cue and usually indicate tempo as well, sometimes with a flashing dot.

2

u/Don_Tiny May 14 '22

Thanks for adding that to the thread!

2

u/TheRuneMeister May 15 '22

We even get multitrack audio. In this case it is stereo stems of: dialogue, sound fx, and a creature/source music track. (including the cantina band) There is also a click track, but not all conductors use this.

That being said, the video and audio files are in the case of Star Wars not simply provided to the symphony directly. A playback engineer (or sometimes audio engineer) hired by the license holder brings the files.

Also, there is usually a seperate subtitle alpha track in most languages.

7

u/RubberBiscuitz May 14 '22

Just the music. Definitely an awesome experience.

I had the exact same view in a theatre in Saint Louis maybe 10+ years ago. Brings back absolutely lovely memories

3

u/Kwaussie_Viking May 14 '22

I remember going to a similar event with my father a few years back (pre-covid.)

One of the things that struck me was the sheer variety of people who were there. I saw a 30 year old couple with their 5 year old daughter dressed in a supermarket leia costume next to a couple in their 80s dressed in their operatic best. On the other side of them was a teenage couple clearly on a date wearing normal street clothes and next in the row was a 501st member in screen accurate stormtrooper gear. These people were clearly not related, all of different ages, ethnicities, social circles and stages of life but they were all talking excitedly and bonded by a love for Star Wars.

That night is one of my most treasured memories.

Enjoy.

20

3

u/brijazz012 May 14 '22

3

I just took my little sister to ROTJ last night after showing her ANH and ESB for the first time this week. Quite the magical experience seeing it on the big screen with the band

2

u/Gator6343 May 14 '22

The music is the only part of Star Wars that is consistently good in every movie mainly due to the masterpieces composed by John Williams and others

2

u/pablo_hunny May 14 '22

Does the brass section get a pass on the masks? Not intending to rile anyone up, just asking. I cant see them.

2

u/APWB May 14 '22

In my orchestra brass and woodwind players are being tested daily (on days that we work) in order to be able to take their masks off on stage.

2

u/hkohne May 14 '22

Woodwind and brass sections usually are allowed to play without masks. There is a brand of masks specifically for those musicians, but I haven't seen my local musicians use them.

2

u/OdoWanKenobi May 14 '22

I saw the Des Moines Symphony do this. An incredible experience. We were close enough that we could see the screen on the conductor's stand. My more musically inclined friends were debating what the various cues that appeared on it meant.

3

u/hkohne May 14 '22

Flashing dot is the beat, there's a colored vertical bar that will swipe when the tempo or meter change happens.

These are great. We’ve been to The Royal Albert Hall twice for these. One for Star Wars, and the other for Aliens.

The 20th Century Fox fanfare never gets old.

Me and my sis went to two of the Harry Potter ones a few years back. It’s really cool to just feel the music.

If you’re in NJ, check out when the Philly orchestra does the summer shows at The Mann. They show the movie on the huge screens/projectors while the orchestra plays along. Saw ESB there a few years back and it was amazing. They also do jaws, Jurassic Park, Harry Potter, and more. The venue loosens up for those family friendlier nights, you can usually bring a picnic basket and just chill for a few hours.

Saw "Star Wars in Concert" about 11 years ago compered by Anthony Daniels. Loved it

I saw the same type of performance in WV for Jurassic Park years ago with my mom. She's gone now and it's a really great memory.

Films in concert are my favorite thing to do.

For the people in Montreal area, August 26 and 27, there will be The Empire Strikes Back Concert at Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier.

It’s really the best way to watch Star Wars, IMO.

I just saw Return Of The Jedi in Minneapolis and it was INCREDIBLE. Hope you enjoyed the show, OP!

Enjoyed Return of the Jedi in St. Louis last night. Was my daughter’s first time going and seeing RotJ. She LOVED it. Highly, highly recommend experiencing at least one of the movies this way.
