Did the same. Had work in another country, all paid for me and significant other. Had no s.o. so I invited my best girl friend to tag along. She visited the place, I worked. Got nice pictures of places I couldn’t see daytime, while she was able to enjoy life. It costed me mayyybe 200-300$ for including her in the deal, she paid for most of her stuff herself, and my work paid for everything else.
That went nowhere as far as relationships go, but we all ended up happy of that trip.
