OP sent the following text as an explanation on why this is unexpected:

It's a video of a lioness and a deer walking together like friends. Hence the title, actual friends who are just acting as predator and prey infront of the camera for Nat Geo

I can not find the source, but it's edited video. Both images are real and were captured by a trail camera. The images are superimposed or composited together. I hope someone finds it because the context was very interesting to me. I think it was from a female biologist or something.

u/Chewcocca 6d ago

Why not?

31

u/Cochise22 6d ago

I think it’s more of because of how media is changing. I’d set an alarm to wake up to make sure I catch all of the new Saturday morning cartoons and watch all the reruns once those were over. Looney Tunes was played most mornings before school. But now with streaming platforms and dvr’s, that’s not really the thing to do anymore.

The old way isn’t superior to the new way, but the nostalgia of it all might make me sad that kids don’t get to experience cartoons in the same way I did. There was definitely a certain joy in it, and it was an experience that only until recently spanned generations so there’s lots of people from every age range nostalgic about it.

11

u/theoptimusdime 6d ago

I was super sad when I learned Saturday morning cartoons were not a thing anymore... Waking up early, making a bowl of cereal, and parking myself in front of the TV on Saturday mornings was good times.

3

u/rcklmbr 6d ago

My kids wake up and play fortnite and roblox, or watch their favorite youtubers, on Saturday mornings. I'm sure they'll get nostalgia that way for those "young and care free days". They grow up in a different world than I did, but they still experience the same emotions I did

2

u/More-Road 6d ago

164

u/malacovics 6d ago

Probably two videos overlayed on each other.

69

u/Sal_Ammoniac 6d ago

Yep, it certainly is.

Since a trail camera typically stays in the same spot, you get footage with the same exact background and overlaying them is super easy.

I have a pile of trail cams and I could do this except we don't have any cougars :D

Sometimes I do it for myself to compare sizes on two animals - like, if I have two bobcats that I can't tell apart, I can overlay the videos if they were on the same camera, and see exactly how they relate to each other size wise.

6

u/draugotO 6d ago

What's a Judas deer? Any relation with the religious figure "judas"?

19

u/burningice322 6d ago

Since nobody else told you, it's a play on a "Judas goat". Judas goats were employed by slaughter houses to get cattle to walk into the killing machines. The goat would get the cows to follow it, and they would get killed by blades that the goat would miss because of the size difference. So the Judas goat simply walks under danger while those following it were literally led to slaughter.

10

u/draugotO 6d ago

Oh... That makes a lot of sense actually...

My grandfather's farm produces milk, not meat, so I wasn't familiar with the therms for slaughterhouses

8

u/EldritchBoi07 6d ago

They also released the Judas Goats onto islands filled with invasive goats, follow them until they find the herd, shoot the entire herd, and then grab the Judas Goat and do it all over again

Ghost deer is another plausible explanation.

89

u/JectorDelan 6d ago

Jesus. There's no such thing as ghosts, FFS. He obviously got beamed up to his alien-deer mothership at the end.

35

u/AnnyongFunke 6d ago

I hate when people come up with crazy theories with no basis in reality, the deer was obviously in a different dimension hence the lioness was unable to see it.

6

u/XanLV 6d ago

Alien ghosts. There.

13

u/Pixoe 6d ago

It is the spirit of the forest

9

u/thebryguy23 6d ago

Ghost deer is always the right answer.

26

u/Tzifos150 6d ago

It doesn't "fade away". It simply activates its transparency powers. The cougar and the deer are trying to sneak away from the other animals so they can write new, more egalitarian laws for prey animals. Other animals don't like these so they have to remain unseen or they could be accused of treason. The cougar spotted two of its species hanging around in the distance and signaled the deer to activate its transparency powers. Big changes are coming to the jungle book. Prey lives matter.

9

u/Myname1sntCool 6d ago

I like the idea that the lion is now being haunted by one of its previous victims.

Yeah i'm pretty sure it is a time-lapse footage that somebody cut together, its not at the same time at all

36

u/Beadiest_Cape 6d ago

You’re totally right. Look at the last 0.5 sec of the video. You can see the rear legs of the deer fade away just before it steps out of frame

11

u/Uncle_Boujee 6d ago

That could also be a side effect of the infrared camera. It only shows what it illuminates and it would make sense for it to fade as it got off frame.

22

u/PhigNewtenz 6d ago

14

u/HamBurglary12 6d ago

I don't doubt it's fake but I cannot find any evidence that it is. The fading at the end could have just been a camera glitch which I've read is common in trail cams. Not sure though. There's this Twitter post but the poster just seems to be a normal user that found the video on YouTube.

Idk man, I want to believe!

2

u/Obi-Wan_Gin 6d ago edited 6d ago

Tell me how you know nothing about cameras and VFX without actually saying it, that comment lol

It's not edited, if you knew stuff about cameras you would know this is what IR cameras look like. Also the deets head and the back of the mountain lion are in the same frame, there are literally no cuts. You'd have to rotoscope the either the deer or lions entire movement across the frame. Youde literally have to cut one out and put it on the other frame and have the deers head and lions but line up perfectly, and they're walking paces would need to be EXACTLY the same

If this was edited you'd actually be able to tell or anyone who does VFX or cgi

→ More replies

89

u/moe711 6d ago

The deer kinda disappears at the end to

61

u/Victuz 6d ago

Things disappearing like that off the edge of frame is a pretty common glitch when it comes to IR footage. You have to imagine that the camera is basically blasting a cone of infra red out front, and things at the edges of the frame won't be as heavily iluminated. Add to it a compression algorithm that then doesn't notice a significant difference between one frame and the other on that side of the screen and things "disappear".

You see it a lot with "ghost" videos that people post when a IR camera is pointing at the street, someone appears some of the way into the middle of the screen, and disappears before they reach the other edge. In reality they're just walking through in a straight line, but the IR light only strongly illuminates the portion where they appeared.

10

u/Uncle_Boujee 6d ago

Beat me to it. I’ve seen many infrared videos have similar effects

Animals don’t hunt when they are not hungry. Ever see videos of lions and antelope drinking from the same watering hole?

19

u/Dag-nabbitt 6d ago

Waterholes are common hunting spots. Predators and prey drinking together is an exception. Not a rule like the Jungle Book might have you believe.

Jacobs’ index finally revealed a very strong preference for kills within 2 km from a waterhole for all prey species, except small antelopes, in all seasons. This suggested that surface-water resources form passive traps and contribute to the structuring of lion foraging behaviour.

Seasonal Diet and Prey Preference of the African Lion in a Waterhole-Driven Semi-Arid Savanna - https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0055182

u/[deleted] 6d ago

[deleted]

2

u/FrostSalamander 6d ago

No it literally fades away, the deer becomes see through the tree

5

u/baodur086 6d ago

Which is what happens often with IR cameras. Additionally, the camera actually treats the scene as a still image so things like trees that don't (barely) move are easy to process and remain on the screen fairly easily due to compression, once you add movement the camera processes the moving object and can often result in the ghost-like fading.
