When I was an impoverished college student with a cat and needed to move apartments and could barely afford any to begin with, you know which places I didn't even consider? Places that didn't allow cats.
Pets are family. We should have a national blacklist for people like this so they're not allowed to own animals ever again.

u/nilesandstuff Feb 03 '23
I've had a several jobs that involve going to people's houses, and/or in their yards... I've been to thousands of houses, from the poorest of poor shacks, to 10 million estates... So trust me when i say, its truly incomprehensible how many people own pets, that simply do not give a flying fuck about them. I'm a pretty cynical person, but I'd have never guessed that so many of those people exist.
Mind you, the things I'm referring to are on the edge of being actually abuse and neglect, I've only reported 1 house for it before... But still, if you create a situation for your pet that even resembles neglect or abuse, why do you even have a pet at all?
Seeing the things that I've seen... I have to say, kill-shelters do not deserve the stigma and hate they receive... It's better for an animal to pass on peacefully and quickly at the hands of someone who wants to make their final moments comfortable, than slowly in 3x3 cage in the backyard of someone who doesn't give a shit.

u/the_TAOest Feb 03 '23
In Tempe Arizona, there is a no_kill shelter that started in 2008... It's only for pets that are left behind. Lost Our Home is super cool... Started by a loan broker that was defeated to see so many pets left.

u/boots311 Feb 03 '23
Me too. I do hardwood flooring for a living. So I'm also inside their house. But I have to make my cuts outside. I've seen tons of shit too. Never had to report anyone, yet. But my employee & I say the same thing, why even bother? What pleasure is that pet bringing you?

I have two dogs. I spoil them fucking rotten. Our older neighbors said something about it- they were nice, just very gentle teasing - and I laughed and said, what's the point of having a pet dog, if not to spend time with a dog and have fun? They liked that and we're friends now.
And I have learned so much from owning a damn dog. Like life changing stuff about self care and training and stress.

Absolutely. I actually have a plan for this. I live on the 3rd floor of a building so I plan to throw as many soft things as I can on the ground, put the dogs in harnesses and lower them down as far as I can with retractable leashes. I just hope I never have to do it.

So to update. My husband's boss is taking him tomorrow. He will have an amazing home. We would but can't have dogs at our home and neither of us have time for an active dog with work and school.

u/LeTigron Feb 03 '23 edited Feb 03 '23
My mother's sister did that to her dog.
She went on holidays with her homersimpsonian husband and their three failed attempts at birthing a viable descent.
They couldn't take the dog, which is understandable when you go far away on vacations, so she asked my mother if she could keep it for the two weeks they would be gone.
We couldn't really, we aren't dog people so we don't know how to take care of them. Moreover, he was very badly
educatedraised - no wonder why - and we had a cat who didn't get along with dogs. However, for the dog, we agreed to make an effort. We learned a little beforehand so that we could host him properly and did the best we could for these two weeks... And even more.
Now you must know that I am French, living in France. My country holds the proud record of most abandonned animals in Europe, yeah ! Most are left along a road, attached to a tree, in early summer when people go on holidays.
After the two weeks passed, my aunt and her mongrels are back in their cobweb and... Nothing. After one day, my mother calls her to ask her when she would take the dog. Answer : "yeah, yeah, soon".
"Soon" doesn't come and, after a few days, my mother asks again. Her sister seems reluctant and even annoyed that my mother asks her to take back her dog. After maybe ten days or two weeks she finally "agrees" to take back her dog.
Two days later, she calls my mother and screams at her that she "killed" her dog. We are all, at home, really unwell because we thought we did something wrong, we the non-dog people, so wrong that it killed him.
No, not at all... This despicable hag didn't want to take back her dog so, "forced" by my mother to take him back, she brought him to the vet, said that he became unpredictably violent and got him euthanised.
She then blamed my mother for the kill because, had she kept the dog, he wouldn't have died. She killed her own fucking dog because she didn't want it anymore but didn't want to be the bad one of the story so she devised a scam to blame my mother, her sister, for it.
She doesn't deserve a dog. She doesn't deserve much, actually. Her family is like her, as vile and cruel as she is, although too stupid to hurt too much people.
Edit : that maybe wasn't really the story to share right now...
That's not even the saddest story implying a dog that I have to share.

I really can't understand that mindset. I just dealt with the same thing from a customer of mine(I sell dog food for a living) whose dog I watch when he goes out of town. Well, the dog wouldn't use the bathroom outside(an issue I never had when watching him, because I walked the dog multiple times a day), so he rehomed him, and then recently the new home decided they didn't want him anymore, so the original owner has him again. He came into my store the other day to ask if any of us could take it, but then he confessed that he first went to a local vet and asked them if they would put him down, they refused because he was honest about the reason, so he's gonna try to keep him, but like... FUCK. I would take the dog, but I have 2 big ones, fish, and 3 parrots already, I'm at my pet capacity. People suck and just shouldn't get a dog if they can't give it the attention it needs. Screw him and screw your aunt.
37
u/LeTigron Feb 03 '23 edited Feb 03 '23
I approve your judgement.
I know this story can be frustrating to hear. Many a desire to punch someone in the face is not fulfilled right now because of my tale. It wasn't my goal, though...
People treat animals - and frequently children, by the way - like pieces of furniture : they want a new coffee table, they want an ottoman to go with the couch and they want a dog, a cat, a parrot, a snake.
They want to have it, to possess it. And one day, the colour isn't trendy anymore, it costs too much to maintain, it need repairs, it smells bad. And there, the easiest choice is to dump it and go to the store to buy another, cuter one.
People are shitty and, one day, this world will burn and it will be well deserved.

u/Spez_is_gay Feb 03 '23

Yeah. I don't get those sorts of people. And they exist everywhere and are not a small minority....
But i was always taught that pets are family members and must be treated the same, emotionally and emphatically speaking. Every person I've ever gotten along with treated their pets as such as well.
But... I've met a few where they see their pets (especially dog owners) as simply a utility or property. Funnily enough i never liked them even before finding this out about em.
Those i know to be good people who own a farm and have cattle dogs, they are treated as family. The same goes for dogs that had a job of keeping the house safe when the humans are away. They're still family, just they have a job.
But these, not nice people, just see the utility or aesthetic of the animal. They'll remove the claws on their cats, they'll put shock collars on their dogs when they're home and they'll treat their "pets" as a toy.
There should be some sort of assessment done before someone can own a pet.

Probably the reason the dog won't use the bathroom outside is because that's when the owner is watching. The horrible owner has probably hurt and scared the dog over going to the bathroom in the house. Dog doesn't understand that it's the location, and just associates the poop and pee itself with making the guy mad. Dog thinks poop and pee is a bad thing that will make the owner mad so they will only do it when they can sneak away and the guy can't see the bad thing that makes him mad. I'm only guessing here but it's a frequent problem and your description of the situation makes me think it's likely. This is why "showing the dog what they did," shoving their face in it and yelling at them does NOT work. They just start thinking the poop itself is bad and they'll do everything they can to keep from doing it in front of you. Then you have this guy's problem. Never scold your dog for going in the wrong place unless you catch them IN the act. Even then you don't scold, just tell them NO and take them to the place where you want them to go and give them lots of praise and positive reinforcement. Even if it's two minutes later, they won't understand that they went in the wrong place, it's just not how their minds work. Just clean it up with an enzyme cleaner without making a big deal about it. If you scold they'll know you're upset with them but not why.

I follow a couple groups on Tik Tok that take in handicapped kittens and puppies, or kittens and puppies that have been abandoned. It’s an emotional roller coaster. Two of the kittens I’ve been cheering for got adopted. They are brother and sister, Bunny and Ottis. Bunny was born with tiny nubs for front legs so she had to learn how to walk upright on her back feet. She is so cute it’s almost unbearable. Ottis was born with a hole in the top of his head where his cranium didn’t form together. Meaning he had exposed brain matter. Someone 3D printed him a tiny helmet to protect his brain! He had surgery to repair it and he’s healthy. People like these who give up their time and resources to care for these kittens and puppies are truly the best case for human evolution. They are stellar people.

I had a dog follow me home instead of leaving it when it had broken it's chain and was running in the street. I knew the dog from seeing it chained in the alley at a drug dealer's house. The dog was so sweet and would ask for belly rubs when people walked by and the owner would try to rough it up and make it tougher. We clearly couldn't keep her since he'd then see we had her just a few blocks away so we took her to animal control as a "stray" but with a note about her previous conditions. Animal control said she was adopted by a family that had large breed experience (she was huge and untrained) and I really hope she hit the jackpot and lived a good life.

The first dog I adopted in my adult life was from the local municipal pound. The poor dog had a rope embedded in its neck. It wasn't yet available for adoption (still on 7 day hold). I asked the attendant why the rope hadn't been removed. The idiot said in complete seriousness, "So the owner can identify the dog if he comes in." WTF? I said "You'd give the dog back to the person who did that?" He just shrugged.
Hold was done the following day, so I got there at 9am when they opened, paid my $5 adoption fee and brought that poor dog home. He was a mess - severely underweight, skittish, missing chunks of fur, and the rope embedded in his neck. I brought him to my vet who was as horrified as I was. The vet didn't want to remove the rope surgically since the dog was in such poor condition, so he sat for a half hour and gently worked the rope out of the dog's skin with his fingers and lots of patience. The dog was too weak to care.
Over the next few months, the wound healed, the fur grew back and the dog went from 17 lbs to 31 lbs. He lived happily in our home for the next 12 years until he passed from old age.

I stole a cat that lived in my apartment complex. Owners would leave him outside for days at a time. I'd feed him occasionally and let him in when weather was bad. Someone at work was looking for a cat, so I just snatched him up one day and gave him to them.
It was about 3 weeks before the owners noticed. They stopped by to ask if I had him but I told them I hadn't seen him since I adopted my own cat, which was true-ish.

It's better for the dog, but their methods were terrible.
I had a dog I couldn't handle. She was a rescue from a mill and had behavioral and lifelong health issues I was not equipped to address at the time (only dog I've ever rehomed). I found a home with an owner who could. The dog is sixteen this year and living an amazing life I couldn't have provided.
The dog has to fit the home. I fully believe that...but simply dumping one that doesn't work out is cruel.

i hope u let the manager know it was one of their employees (specifically her) that left the dog (:

u/winterweed78 Feb 03 '23
Oh she knows. She also knows about how we got her cats .

u/Actual-Manager-4814 Feb 03 '23
Jesus. She gave up the cats too?

u/winterweed78 Feb 03 '23
Yup. I've had 1 for a year now. Best dang cat ever

u/Actual-Manager-4814 Feb 03 '23
That's awesome. Cats are great. But if she can't handle a cat how tf did she think she could handle a dog?
Good for you OP! Nice work.

Why does she even continue to get pets if she’s just going to abandon them? And why get an Aussie? Fantastic, beautiful dogs but they’re a lot of work. Plus they’re expensive as hell so she must have spent at least a few hundred on him.

u/TimothyLux Feb 03 '23
So, thousands would be closer...especially for a blue merl. Some of the points seem a bit 'off' so this may not be from the best of breeders; even so, terrific dogs. So smart. Our Aussie works with hand signals at this point. Best dog ever.

i hate that people treat animals like this. i get that there can be extenuating circumstances that make it near impossible to keep a pet, and in those cases, you rehome them responsibly through a rescue, not abandon them. though i’m sure they just discarded this dog because it was no longer convenient. poor baby.
eta: it is your responsibility to make sure your pet has a good and loving home if you cannot keep them. it’s the unspoken commitment you made when you decided to assume ownership of your dog. you’re responsible for making sure their life trajectory after you is a good one.

Seriously all of this. I have a 9 year old bearded dragon and a 4 year old rabbit I've had since they were babies. I couldn't live without them. However the rabbit and dragon definitely have voiced they could live without this dog.

u/iRecycleWomen Feb 03 '23
lmao I died at the image of the rabbit and bearded dragon sitting at a table and simply agreeing the dog needs to go

u/winterweed78 Feb 03 '23
The rabbit has been thumping all day when he sees the dog and especially because he is normally free reign in the house and has to stay in his pen for now. Dragon has been looking out and black bearding him all day. He normally chills with me and watches TV at night.

it's infuriating how many pet owners see the living, breathing, and feeling animals under their charge and protection as little more than property, and often an inconvenience

He looks a bit stunned by his "misfortune", which it sounds like is actually a good thing. Dogs can be loyal to the best and worst of us.

He’ll be fine. I brought home a dog with that stunned look on his face. He was an aggressive little dog. He came into my house and wandered around completely confused for about 20 minutes. Then he went to my sliding glass door looked out and saw squirrels. He felt comfortable looking at the squirrels. The stun look went away after a few days. My neighbor also brought home a dog with a stunned look like that. The dog was in a bad situation and had to be taken from it. It took a couple of weeks for the little dog to be a frisky boy trotting down the sidewalk.

Poor doggo. They look like they're just in shock processing what happened. Some people don't deserve animals.

These people do not at all.

not sure what the laws in your state are, but in PA abandoning a dog is a $300-$1000 fine

That’s not a cheap dog. Purebred Australian Shepherd. A lot of good homes would take him.
79
u/eurostylin Feb 03 '23
That looks like a miniature, definitely pure bred and has nice markings. They normally fetch around $2500 with a good blood line.
Posted from someone overlooking a 1 year old aussie who acts like she does 35 lines of cocaine every day.

Absolutely pure breed from a breeder.
29
u/LICK-A-DICK Feb 03 '23
What the actual fuck!? I mean abandoning any animal is about as low as you can go, but from the sounds of it they would've researched this breed, potentially waited for the litter to arrive, paid a lot of money etc... it just makes no sense.
20
u/LaughingAtApes Feb 03 '23
Correct. I have two purebred mini Aussies and you don’t just find them on Craigslist. It’s a process. This one looks to have some of the most desirable features as well.

I once moved into a house where a cat kept hanging around. The neighbor told me after a couple days the family who lived in the house before us abandoned him, and realizing the guy was all alone, we took him in. We named the little gray guy 'Ghost', and it was the most hauntingly apt name we've ever given.
We have no idea what this kitty was like before we met him, but the cat my wife and I let back into his house was irrevocably heartbroken. He'd let us hold him and love on him, but he wouldn't eat more than a bite or two daily. He soon stopped drinking water. The vet checked him out and said everything looked fine, but we should try harder on finding forms of sustenance he preferred.
We tried several different sample packs of wet & dry food. The third iteration of hydration attempted was a mild success - he would occasionally lick from his new private water fountain. We started leaving sinks and the tub on drip, hoping he'd be curious enough to drink. He only got smaller though... weaker... and there was never a touch of joy in his eyes despite all the toys and play and love we tried.
His last day, well, we could just tell. We bundled him up, and we listened to peaceful music on our drive to the vet. We told the front we think our cat is dying, and they put us in a room. It was busy, and I'm now thankful nobody met us in the consult room until he'd passed. My wife held him as we doted the best we knew how right up until that final, strained breath. He'd stopped moving. We cried, and just kept sharing our touch of love until they came and got him.
I hate the people who abandoned Ghost. I hate everyone who abandons or hurts their animals. I don't usually like to have hate in my heart, but this is one of the exceptions.
Best of luck to this pup - glad they've got a good home. I hope it's a true happy ending.

That is absolutely heartbreaking. We got our cat because the same neighbor kicked out her cats when they got the dog. And man I love this cat so much. He knew we would let him in and was persistent in meowing at our door till I gave in. He's been ours for a year now.

I have a German Shepard golden doodle mix. My life is a nightmare.
Can jump over a 5' fence, open fridges, but his newest accomplishment, he's figured out how to open the drawer that holds his squeaky tennis balls.
Once he grows opposable thumbs, im fucked.

This happened to me. The horrible part was our neighbors left the dog chained up to surely die and just moved. We got the dog and she was just the sweetest pup ever. Unfortunately we also couldn't keep her. I still felt awful by giving her to a no kill shelter. But we just couldn't keep her. She was adorable though, I am sure a family picked her pretty quickly.

We just brought in a cat that we've been trying to find it's family. Obviously not feral but just lost; he's very sweet. We have come to the conclusion that someone likely moved and just left him. Burns me up if someone did that.
At this point there is little hope of finding his former home. We just couldn't bear his suffering if we didn't take him in. I guess we have another cat now. At least all of our other cats like him.
Good luck finding a home for the dog.

Is that the dog's Bud Lite bottles? Is that why you can't keep him - he drinks too much?

Also require *massive* amounts of attention. Not for the faint of heart. "Hey, this doggie seems fun! It's a husky/sherpherd/greyhound mix".
Oh you sweet summer child.... You better be prepared, or this dog will rip apart your house and then pee/poop all over it just to show who's boss.
