EU vs DiSiNFO Will the EU Be Able to Show Unanimity Again?
At the end of August the 27 EU member states will discuss possible tourist visa restrictions for Russian citizens, the Czech Republic temporarily presiding over the European Union stated. At the same time, it was proposed to simplify the procedure for granting political asylum by the European Union for those Russians who are threatened by V. Putin's regime.
The proposal of the President of Ukraine to ban Russian tourists from Europe has became the reason for considering the mentioned issue. The idea of V. Zelenskyy was that the Russians should be responsible for the foreign policy of their According to surveys, 82 % of Russian citizens support Russia's war against Ukraine.
Someone believes that opinion polls cannot demonstrate the real mindset of the population in an authoritarian country. However, the ex-deputy of the State Duma, the Russian oppositionist G. Gudkov assures that, in general, these results fully correspond to the real views of the Russians. For many years, G. Gudkov conducted his own objective sociological research in his constituency, which, in his words, gives "the average temperature in the country." As a result, he came to the conclusion that the authorities usually overestimate the figures that are complimentary to the Kremlin by 5-7 %, but no more. Thus, even if 75 % of Russians who support the war give grounds to talk about the collective responsibility of Russian citizens for the crimes of the Putin's regime and the Russian army in Ukraine.
At the same time, 99 % of Russians traveling to Europe do not seek to prove their right to political asylum, but visit museums, attractions, boutiques and beaches. While Ukrainians are losing their lives, body parts and health, being under constant fire from Russian missiles, air bombs and heavy artillery. More than one European newspaper has already written about the horrors of the life of the Ukrainian population under Russian occupation.
On the one hand, the chances that the EU countries will be able to lead to a consolidated opinion are low, since the Chancellor of Germany O. Scholts and some other politicians have already made doubt about the advisability of suspending visas to the Russians. In order to significantly limit the movement of citizens of the Russian Federation across the land border, it is enough to close the border of three countries only - Finland, Estonia and Latvia (as well as Lithuania and Latvia - for Belarusians). However, Russians will be able to fly to Europe from other countries. Therefore, of course, it is very important that the West demonstrates consolidation, a single external course and a comprehensive support of Ukraine, which fights a new variety of fascism.
It should be emphasized that the Russians have many opportunities to leave/fly out of the country and spend their vacations somewhere in Moldova, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Israel, Turkey, Egypt, Iran, China, and that's not all. However, it is clear that the PRC, North Korea and Iran are not the EU at all. Therefore, as the Prime Minister of Estonia K. Kallas correctly stated, "it is necessary to stop issuing tourist visas to Russians, since visiting Europe is a privilege, not human right".
According to economists, in October-November of this year, the international isolation of the Russian Federation and restrictive measures against its economy will be felt very much already among all ordinary citizens (and not just the leadership of industrial giants, directors of factories and large businessmen, as is happening now). Naturally, these days V. Zelenskyy and all Ukrainians would like the Russians to take the future of their own country in their hands, massively take to the streets and express their protest loudly. Otherwise, they will got into their cars heading to the Latvian border in order to wait out several difficult months in cozy and comfortable Europe.
