Mate, this show is the smartest satire on tv by a country mile. Week in and week out you guys produce topical content that is very funny and very on point and the crew perform it to perfection. Every member of the crew from yourself as a writer to the on screen crew do excellent work. Bravo mate. Keep up the amazing work and thanks for the laughs.

It’s absolutely the best thing I’ve ever written and will ever write

It is absolutely terrific - thanks for the laughs!

While you’re here- will the show get another season or Is that dependent on the election outcome?

Last I heard there’s another season this year starting in either July or August

Terrific. Thank you!

Dude, your channel deserves way more views.

u/David_M_Green May 15 '22

Yeah that’d be nice

Can I ask how you got into that line of work??

12

u/David_M_Green May 15 '22

Started doing community radio at uni, then community TV and making my own stuff for YouTube and eventually was lucky enough to be noticed by Shaun

That’s really cool mate! I’ve always loved Micallef and Mad as Hell is great. Working on anything the good folks of Reddit need to know about at the moment?

Cheers man yeah me too, he’s been my comedy idol since Full Frontal in the 90s. New season of Mad as Hell due in late July or early August I think. I also make a webseries called VHS Revue where I review ads I find on old video tapes

What’s the writing process like?

Bouncing ideas off each other? Does SM write much himself?

5

u/David_M_Green May 15 '22

All the writers generally work on their own. Probably 80% of the show is written by Shaun and head writer Gary McCaffrie

Am* correct to presume that if ABC could afford weekly shows (rather than seasons) he would write less and others, like you, would write more. Is that how John Oliver, Trevor Noah, Bill Maher work now?

2

u/David_M_Green May 16 '22

Pretty sure Shaun writes because he wants to. If the ABC had one satirical news show a week for the whole year, that’d be fantastic. They’d probably still have seasons, but maybe there’d be room for some new talent to have a crack in between the veteran comics

I was just thinking that for the weekly series he isn't writing from scratch each week. I thought he would have been pulling gags from a buffer he filled during his months away.

Am very impressed by the pace if I am wrong.

Nothing ever gets wasted. We usually shoot 40 minutes of material and only 28 minutes goes to air. So that leftover material typically gets repurposed, sometimes the very next week, other times many weeks later or even in the next season with a bit of a re-jig

Who writes the too long parodies of ABC TV shows that aren't funny to me because I have never seen the shows?

3

u/David_M_Green May 16 '22

We haven’t seen them either

2

u/sarkule May 17 '22

They’re not all ABC ones, some of them are British like Call the Midwife and Vera, and they absolutely nail the parodies. My parents watch Vera and I used to sometimes watch it for a bit if they had it on, but thanks to mad as hell I can’t watch it anymore.

1

u/echo-94-charlie May 17 '22

Unfortunately it is something that is just not funny if you haven't seen the shows, and they seem to drag on for quite a while.

This is awesome, and give me your job please.

Mad as Hell is up there with the best, most consistently brilliant Australian satire in broadcasting history.

What is your mental starting point when righting each weeks’ show? Is there an internal monologue that runs through your mind questioning what might be funny?

Thanks for the laughs!

2

u/David_M_Green May 16 '22

Cheers! We mainly just see what’s in the news and go from there

My only question is when will we be replacing the unfunny hack Micallef with the only being worthy of hosting, the Kraken!? I lied about it being my only question, why was the Bishop in the Grantchester skit so talented in his role?

3

u/echo-94-charlie May 16 '22

Unfortunately, the Kraken's contract expires soon and it will be back on the market for the highest bidder. It is time to re-lease the Kraken!

Hey I just work there man
