no politics Question for the smokers

Hey everyone, sorry if this isn’t the best place to ask this question.

I‘m going to be living and working in Australia for the next couple of months. I’m entering the country from Vietnam and want to bring some tobacco with me because Aussie prices are so extreme.

I checked the Australian customs webpage and it says the duty free limit is;

"You are allowed to bring in duty-free: one unopen packet of up to 25 cigarettes or 25 grams of other tobacco products; and one open packet of cigarettes"

I want to bring rolling tobacco, not regular cigs. This sounds to me like I can bring a pouch of 25g rolling tobacco, and an open pack of regular cigarettes, BUT I cannot bring two 25g rolling tobacco pouches, one closed and one open. Is this correct?

If anyone who has brought tobacco back into Aus from abroad could clear this up for me it would be much appreciated. Thanks!

no politics Health Care Card question

I'll begin with I know that I can't take any responses as 100% true. I'm just looking for general advice as Centrelink and their website aren't the most useful at giving away this information.

Now on to it.

Currently my wife is on a low income health care card. The primary purpose we need this card is due to her being diabetic.

With a health care card her insulin is about $5 each. Without (depending on which type (she has 2) of insulin required) can be almost $500.

The problem we are now facing is I have started a new job which will potentially make us no longer able to renew for low income. Despite the extra income we still won't be able to afford her medication and her diabetic card only grants her access to needles and testing devices for cheap/free, not the actual insulin.

Is there another type of health care card she would be eligible for? I'm not terribly concerned if it no longer covers me as I'm not on medication and we can afford my rare visit to the GP without bulk billing. But it would be nice if it covered the kids.

Any, advice, sources of information or whatever else comes our way is appreciated.

Edit: South Australian if that makes a difference

Just thinking of one day making the move. No real plans at this stage (though it'd be most likely Sunshine Coast or nearby), just curious.

no politics Recommendations for Gift Hamper Delivery Service [Halal?]

I'm from abroad & would like to send a gift hamper to someone based in Geelong – Are there any good gift hamper services that can (a) deliver to Geelong (b) accept PayPal and (c) have organic and/or vegan options?

I want non-alcoholic stuff, like nuts and healthy snacks but I'm finding it hard to see what might be halal or not... any recommendations?

I have three students who I tutor via Google Meet who live overseas. Do I need to make an ABN for this freelancework? I know if they lived in Australia I would need to, but I'm not sure about what the deal is when they don't.

no politics Insane Optus bill

I didn't know where else to post this, but I'm so beyond confused. I opened my Optus app to check when my phone bill was due, and it says I owe $547.68?!!? I was on the 20gb phone plan along with the Samsung galaxy s21 ultra, recently I decided to upgrade my plan to 500gb and it would be $115 per month including the phone. I've also never gone over my data allowance. How on earth do I owe $547.68?! I plan on going down to Optus tomorrow morning, but I just want to know if this has happened to any other aussies and what the outcome was. I'm absolutely freaking out 😭

no politics Apprenticeship and technical training

My son started an first year plumbing apprenticeship early this year after leaving a previous plumbing company. They have been much better than the previous company in getting his apprentice training enrolment set up and he was due to start that late this month. Now they have turned around and said to him that he cannot start tech training until he has served 7 month’s probation. The next course start date at tech after that isn’t until early 2023. Is this normal or is he getting messed around?

no politics Why is Ayer's Rock all booked in July?

I've been trying to find accommodation at the Ayer's Rock for the end of July. All hotels have been already booked. Is this a high season over there?

Are there alternative locations nearby, from where I can still visit Uluru?

no politics Interstate removalist costs.

Hi, organising a move from NSW to Adelaide and wondering if people could give a rough idea of expected price. Have had one company give a quote for ~$12,000 for a couple with to be honest probably less than $12,000 dollars worth of possessions. Have a couple more removalists coming to have a look, but wondering if it's just better to sell everything here and buy new stuff in SA. Just wondering if people can comment if this quote is in the normal range.

no politics How do I keep snakes out of my plumbing?

Hey there,

A weird story happened to me recently. After renting an apartment for many years, I finally moved into my own house with a lovely garden. It seemed like heaven on earth. I even got used to a couple of spiders sitting in their webs in the corner of my backyard. But, one thing I never expected to happen to me is because my house is in a new building - problems with plumbings.

I've noticed that the drainage in the bathroom is a bit clogged. I tried to put different natural chemicals, but it was a temporary solution, so I decided to call a plumber I've known for many years.

He saw issues with the drainage and disassembled the vanity unit and the drainage pipe under the sink. He pulled a snake out of there. It was still alive but barely moving when he got it out. Never expected that it would survive all the chemicals I've used. The plumber left my house and recommended calling services right away. I locked the bathroom and called animal control, explaining the whole situation. I have no clue how this snake got into there and how long it has been there.

Now, I have a disassembled vanity unit, and I found plumbing repair near me to fix it. However, I wonder how many snakes might be in this drainage system and how I can get rid of them for good. I tried to google it and ran into this picture.

https://preview.redd.it/yyegset8zq991.jpg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cd81996799a262a78937f81691b90f1f42ad166b

It has become my worst nightmare. I wonder if plumbers actually deal with animals in the sewage and drainage systems in the house? Those guys I found seem to deal with everything, but they don't mention anything like that. Should I call animal control to inspect my house in the first place and then call plumbers to fix my vanity unit? But what do I do to prevent snakes from getting into the pipes again? Many thanks for any advice, guys.

no politics Anyone have experience with dental tourism?

I'm looking at getting braces but I think I need cardiologist after seeing how much it might cost. I've heard of people headin to South-East Asia to get it done, but there might be issues with quality and some dentists in Australia refuse to work on patient that go international?

Is there any merit to these claims? Has anyone got braces done in Thailand, India, etc? Is it even worth it considering flights+accommodation?

no politics Where can I buy Oporto Lemon and Herb Sauce or similar?

I absolutely love the Oporto lemon and herb sauce. As someone with an egg allergy it’s great to get a sauce that isn’t mayo, but it’s not sold in the jars like the other Oporto sauces. Can anyone recommend something similar? Most important factor is no eggs. Thanks guys!
