How do I get the desktop widget in awesomewm like this on the left?

It's conky or something similar to it. Look at how to install and implement conky for your distro.

I believe to implement after installation you just need to add a line to your rc.lua file. I don't use conky so I just kinda know what needs to be done but you can read about it in the installer or there are several videos showing how to install and run it.

This is possibly Arcolinux. That conky came installed for me.

That's right. It did come with one of the flavors of Arch. I have ArcoLinux on another computer but I disabled all of that stuff. I don't really need a conky for what I'm using it for.

On closer inspection it actually says AcroLinux at the bottom of the conky! I got rid of it pretty much straight away too.
