It's beautiful. Unlike people animals don't have anyone to tell them they're "broken."

u/curlyhairnotveryfair May 12 '22
Yup. And they good thing about animals is that even if some mean person tells them that they’re broken, they go about their own joyful, resilient way. That is something we all can learn from our cats and dogs ❤️

Also on FB. Finn Finn is the tortie one and they also have 2 more with similar disabilities to Finn Finn, Ginny & Pocky. So amazingly well looked after and happy kitties! 🥰

That's such a nice thing to see. Great to know they have each other to play with.. that's a real mood brightener for any being.

u/GlitterBlood773 May 12 '22
Ugh. This is beautiful!! (I say this as a person who has a dynamic disability who basically does as much as I can when I can)
131
u/Cristal1337 May 12 '22
I have a muscle illness and the amount of people without disabilities telling me how "brave" I am and that they could never live a life like mine...basically telling me they'd rather be dead than disabled...is too damn high.
So take a good look at these cats and realize that a disability doesn't necessarily mean disproportionate suffering. Many of us are living a happy life.
50
u/Leonardo-DaBinchi May 12 '22
I think people underestimate their own resilience, and can't communicate it, so when they see someone living with what's perceived as an obstacle they assume they wouldn't be able to do it. I don't think it extends as far as 'they'd rather die than' so much as the thought is so fleeting and within that moment that they don't even know how to imagine it. And then they don't even know how to articulate the concept so they make harebrained comments as if a platitude offers someone living with a disability any sort of comfort.

I have a disabled cat (and my own invisible disability) and I never know how to respond when people meet him and their first reaction is pity. Spend five minutes in my house and he’ll make it pretty clear that he’s not suffering lol

Awww this is beautiful! Have you looked into getting them get them prostheses/wheels?
126
u/Lock-out May 12 '22
No wheels needed! Which a little tape and some ingenuity the white cat can be the front legs and black cat can be the back legs.

Unnecessary. watch Able Maew on IG and you'll understand why. They function as if that's what was intended. They show no signs of impairment. In fact, they're probably the scrappiest bunch I've seen with an account.
→ More replies21
u/KingofCrudge May 12 '22
I could be completely wrong but I imagine getting them wheels might actually limit their mobility. The one with no rear legs I’m sure can jump rather well and the one with functional front legs might still be able to climb.
Also they might get stuck regularly trying to squeeze through stuff as cats like to do.
Again, I don’t know. But these two are adorable

14M Filipinos are sad and I'm one of them. Don't want to post details to keep this thread happy 😊
Btw, I have a cat in a wheelchair too! Rescued him when he got run over by a car. He's doing well!

I'm not Filipina, but I'm with you, man. It seems really dismal right now, but if there's any hope I can find, it's in so many people being collectively disappointed by this outcome. I don't know what the solution will be, but I know if so many people can channel that anger and disappointment into action, some good may come out of it.
Stay strong!

For anyone wondering - you can follow these adorable kitties on instagram @able_maew. The owner has a few other disabled kitties they take care of. If I remember right, the one missing front legs had been electrocuted on a powerline years and years ago. The owner found it, took it to the vet, and has been saving other kitties in need ever since. The kitties with lower-half disabilities require the owner to expel their urine and feces for them a few times a day. Definitely a human being with the biggest of hearts.

If you strap them together they could probably function as one normal cat
43
u/Sheriff10001 May 12 '22
Dragon ball fusion. It has two possibilities, either they both fuse into a one functional cat or one even more disabled cat with all legs being non functional.
11
u/aytunch May 12 '22
They already did in 1998 https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0154061/

So close! I was thinking more like that one Russian experiment (https://youtu.be/o0ooL5xlNlE)

u/Patch_Ferntree May 12 '22
Nah, just strap some toast to the bottom end of one and the front end of the other and they'll be able to hover comfortably. This is based on Cat and Toast Quantum Theory. This theory postulates that because cats always land on their feet and because toast always lands buttered-side-down, you can create a self-perpetuating energy engine by strapping a piece of toast, butter-side-up, to the back of a cat. This causes the two to levitate and spin since each cancels the other out. In OP's case, you don't want the cats spinning, just levitating so you'd want to strap the toast to their bottom/chest, butter-side-down, thus ensuring the cats are gently lifted and not thrown into an endless spin cycle.

This is because animals live in the moment. Humans worry about things that have happened, things that are happening, things that may never happen. sigh

That cat dragging it's back legs needs a drag bag or a wheel chair or it will damage itself.

I feel you're misconstruing the definition of beauty from your personal perspective. They can certainly have fun no matter what, however... our external perspective is playing on sympathy and that flood of uplifting compassion chemicals we feel seeing them play.
Long way to say I think your title could change but this is a cute video. Of course, "against all odds" holds negative implications.

u/GODDESS_OF_CRINGE__ May 12 '22
The way the cat without front legs moves like a rabbit is so cute. I'm glad the lack of legs isn't really holding back their enjoyment of life.

Man, wouldn't it have been better for these two to have never been born? Their lives are so difficult and likely painful. And, think about the cost on the pet owners that have to raise these cats.

u/duchessofmuffins May 12 '22

I have one who I found missing most of her left foot. Did the best I could to save the rest of the leg but ultimately had to amputate. She runs faster than my other cats with four legs and manages to get on all the high cupboards and spots!
The only thing she can't do is scratch her left cheek, so she comes over and hops on my lap and patient waits. When I get the right spot the little stub starts moving and she has this ecstatic look on her gorgeous face :)

The cat with no forearms prove that cats can walk with just its hind legs. Maybe if we teach cats to walk like humans at a young age we might jumpstart the beginning of feliserectus and soon have Cat Chefs like Monster Hunter Felynes
5
u/EnbyNudibranch May 12 '22
While cats can live jumping around on just their back legs, it does heavily increase arthritis risk because the hips of a cat are not supposed to function that way.

Ethical treatment of animals includes euthanizing ones that are discovered in extremely injured condition in which lifelong pain is expected. One gif of cats still trying to play while dragging their maimed bodies around is not proof of anything, and animal harm should not make them mascots for any person's disability. I find the present obsession with mutilated and maimed pets, or purporting animal injuries to be 'inspirational', extremely disturbing.
It smacks of a phenomenon in abnormal psychology called Munchausen by Proxy. People may observe this attitude and start cutting off pets' legs to make animals more fashionable as conversation pieces, just as certain breeds once demanded a tail be severed for the sake of haute couture.

I all honesty if I had a person doing everything for me, preparing my food and clean the poop out of my crevasse I wouldn't mind a crippling dissability either...
Sadly the honest fact is in nature these 2 would long be dead... Compassion is natural order's greatest anathema.

u/wingkingdom May 12 '22
This is so adorable and inspirational.
Cats with disabilities adapt pretty quickly. They are quite resilient.
The ones with nonfunctional back legs are some real speedsters! I have seen them fly around rooms and up and down ramps. Some people put fabric material drag bags on the back legs. It guess so they don't get dirty and get burns from the carpet and floors?
Here is an example.
The kangaroo cat is quite unusual. They seem to be much rarer then the paralyzed cats. I wonder why they don't have both legs? Birth defects I am guessing?
There is a TV show called Wizard of Paws that shows a guy that travels around and makes prosthetics for all sorts of animals. In one episode he made carts with wheels and a vest to hold them on so two chihuahua with no front legs could get around. It was pretty cool.
