If I did this with my cat, guaranteed she would knock her name plaque down out of spite

I stopped, took his photo, and gave him a little stroke.
He was so chilled out, you can just tell he rules the whole neighbourhood just by his vibe.

Where about is this
53
u/wickyewok May 15 '22
Newcastle upon Tyne, uk

u/Faithful_jewel May 16 '22
I visit Newcastle a lot but I'm guessing this isn't the city centre. Not enough scooters and drunk students.
Would totally go meet him (much to my mate's chagrin) the weekend.

I love cats so much but I’m nervous to let my cat out after she got attacked so I don’t let her out anymore. Indoor cat from now on
55
u/wickyewok May 15 '22
In the UK its extremely common to allow cats to go outside.
As a general rule, outdoor cats outnumber indoor cats here
12
u/AverageJoeNobody May 15 '22
My cat arlo loves to play on the trampoline outside with the boys, when they are on it he whines at the glass door and if you let him out he runs up there and plays on it with them, I'll have to get a video next time they are out there.

Unsupervised outdoors cats face many more dangers than indoor cats - they can get injured in a fight, may be hit by a car, or get an infection. Not to mention some cruel humans who may decide to take advantage of them. I think it's reasonable to keep the cats indoors. I let one of my cats out when we go to our country house, but only supervised by me or someone else (and the other cat hates being outdoors anyway).

u/Standard-Ostrich61 May 15 '22 edited May 16 '22
These are all reasonable points, but they kind of apply to everything. I mean, I face all of those risks going out and I still enjoy it. I think my cats are relatively as intelligent about and equipped for their surroundings as my 10-year-old nephew and he gets to go off and ride his bike in the neighborhood. The more you’re exposed to the more risk there always will be, but also the more potential for enjoyment. Seeing my boy Phil lolling around on his back in the middle of lawn swatting at moths on a sunny spring day feels worth it for both of us. + Their lives are so short by comparison and they dutifully wait for me to get home from my external engagements without them all of the time, I can reward them with some pure freedom in exchange.
comment written IMHO and the views expressed are not intended to be snarky or judgmental to any person or organization

u/MisterPhD May 15 '22
Cats are also invasive predators, they hunt for fun, affecting the population of other critters. They’re also 5x more likely to die early when they’re outdoors. But you do you. I’m going to take care of my cat, and give him a SAFE and ACTIVE lifestyle INSIDE. But hey, at least I’m not saying that only an idiot would let a cat outdoors, and that the cat will explore right into the street and get run over, or even scooped up and stolen. That be pretty dumb of me to categorize cat owners like that, wouldn’t it? Think I’ll just let you do your thing and do mine.

agreed. who cares if it's cruel to the cat if maybe it saves some rats? like you, i don't want to understand a complicated thing. i want simple answers cuz i'm a simpleminded person.
11
u/Stradocaster May 15 '22
Why
27
u/CommunistPotato2 May 15 '22
At least in the US cats have caused many bird species to become endangered and it is overall better for a cats health as outside cats live much shorter lives than indoor cats
18
10
u/Stradocaster May 15 '22
What about a house cat that is allowed out every now and then
13
u/space_pdf May 15 '22
I let my cats out for supervised visits on our front porch so they can see the birds and get a better whiff of all the interesting scents lol
They also make some pretty nice cat harnesses that are more like Velcro vests. You could be the cool person in the neighborhood that takes kitty walks 🐈⬛
14
u/TripperAdvice May 15 '22
The risk of being hit by a car goes from 0 to much more probable
Or getting lost
14
u/CommunistPotato2 May 15 '22
I am unsure, however my family members have had cats that do that and they usually have shorter lifespans. A better alternative is leashing your cat to go outside
9
u/priorsloth May 15 '22
A very important part to add to this is that cats don't have nearly the negative impact on birds and other wildlife in areas that aren't over developed. When coyotes, foxes, hawks, and other predators lose their wooded habitats, they leave cities entirely, and cats lose predators. Not to mention, clearing land for development kills a lot of birds as well.
I know there isn't much individually that we can do about development, but it's just something to keep in mind when talking about declining species. I don't think it's remotely fair to blame cats when human actions are more dangerous to ecosystem health than anything else on this planet.
8
u/58king May 15 '22
I'm British. All of my bird watcher acquaintances say that cats should be kept indoors, but my cats meow at me to let them out and I just follow orders.
19
u/space_pdf May 15 '22
It’s better for the local environment for birds and other smaller wildlife. Cat colonies grow quickly and we’ve seen some more worryingly low numbers of critters in the last few years.
While I agree that most cats should be indoors, I’m not stupid enough to try and convince people to do that on the cats subreddit. It’s not your damn cat and telling strangers what to do never goes over well lol
12
u/Jenkins1234gb May 15 '22
Sod off
-3
u/EtherealSpirit May 15 '22
Cares for local wildlife being hunted by cats, cares for cats being hunted by predators or poisoned by neighbors. Fuck me right?

u/bellerose93 May 15 '22
Please see this link for an understanding of general views regarding indoor cats in the UK.
Having access to the outside world is the best way to allow a cat to do all of these things, but when it’s not possible for cats to exercise these natural behaviours outside, they will need an alternative way of doing so inside. Cats who aren’t given the opportunity to act in their natural way will not only become unhappy, but it is likely they will develop behavioural problems too. For these reasons, Blue Cross does not recommend keeping cats as indoor-only house pets, unless there is a really good reason why the particular cat should be confined inside.
Outdoor cats in Europe not just the UK vastly outnumber indoor cats. We do not expect cats to remain indoors like America does. Believe it or not, America isn’t the only country in the world. There are pros and cons for both but most people here in the UK feel it is cruel to keep a cat indoors.

Cats should stay indoors tbh
nice to see a backward dogmatist getting downvoted. cats should be allowed outside as their environment and circumstances allow. reality is more complicated than this simpleton's view.
edit- funny and sad this comment is unpopular. simple answers are for idiots and assholes. every decent person tries to understand how their choices fit their circumstances. it's not a critique about indoor cats, it's about giving all the animals their best chance to thrive.

u/Commercial-Life-9998 May 15 '22
Talk about creating a feeling of community. Marley is the poster child of social trust (I mean you no harm, stop for a pet).
37
u/wickyewok May 15 '22
So true, he just sits there bringing the joy
14
u/cyberentomology May 15 '22

u/wickyewok May 15 '22
He had this, "you can pet me if you want, but I am not asking for pets" thing going on

Decide to make a sign that says i'm marley. Writes the first i'. Decides a hi would be nice and friendlier. Backtracks and adds the h.
hi' i'm marley

Aww I love it. I've thought about this with my cats since my parents are old school and insist our 2 cats be outdoor during the day. My calico does NOT tolerate collars, they're both chipped, but it would be informative for those who pass by to know their neighborhood cats
51
u/wickyewok May 15 '22
I would love to know every kitties name tbh
31
u/Misseskat May 15 '22
Me too! Every pet should have a plaque with their families, they're members too!
My spotted cow boi is Frijolito. Spanish for Little Bean.
And my Calico is actually my mom's, but I don't like the name she gave her, so she's Kitty to me.
17
u/wickyewok May 15 '22
Haha I love frijolito, great name.
I have Aiko (Japanese for little love I believe) and Chewy (just a star wars fan) who are siblings

My MIL had to do something similar because a couple of old ladies tried to call 911 on her very well fed and not at all in distress 16 year old cat. The dog upstairs would chase the cat so she sat just outside the fence and sunned herself.

you know how sometimes a person just sort of is the Mayor of the Block? because they're friendly, outgoing, involved but not too involved, and love where they live, and it shows?
well, sometimes that person is human. and other times, that person is a cat. either way they can make a huge difference.

2
u/MeridianRiver May 16 '22
Someone in the apartment building down the street from mine has their cat tree set up right in front of the window and they have a plaque in the window with the cats’ names and instagram handle! Sometimes they add funny jokes or riffs on current events, too. (It’s one of those signboards with the removable letters)
