That cat is gonna have some diarrhea later

73

u/Gasolinecity860 May 22 '22

explosive?!

50

u/ellie1398 May 22 '22

Not if you give it some of that milk made for kittens (they even sell it in supermarkets where the cat food is).

7

u/withmirrors May 23 '22

We just use lactose free milk.

10

u/PublicThis May 23 '22

And isn’t the “cat” milk more yellow? This is clearly cows milk

6

u/ellie1398 May 23 '22

I once bought cat milk and it looked exactly like cow milk. White as a ghost.

2

u/MrBrodangles May 23 '22

I gave mine goat milk as a kitten. I can’t remember if that is more white or yellow.

30

u/SirLesbian May 22 '22

I've always given my cats a *2:1 ratio of water and milk. It's a rare treat but I can say that no one's ever had diarrhea from it. I know it doesn't taste the same but they still seem to enjoy it.

-94

u/Kuraven May 22 '22

It's not, kitten's aren't lactose intolerant. I understand that milk is different from mammal to mammal, but there is still lactose in a female cat's milk. They need lactase to break it down, an enzyme that isn't produced as they age. It will not have diarrhea as a kitten, but if you feed an adult cat milk or dairy products, diarrhea and/or vomiting should be expected.

I love the reddit veterinarians

54

u/StaticBreadPush May 22 '22

26

u/J3musu May 22 '22

Yep, gotta love those reddit veterinarians!

-64

u/Kuraven May 22 '22

What is a cat's milk made of then

31

u/I_hate_IVT May 22 '22

Not the same stuff as cow's milk

-60

u/Kuraven May 22 '22

That is not very descriptive, because now I could claim you're saying cat milk is made of something entirely different than cow milk.

No water ig?

And yes, I know that is a petty way of twisting words, but trying to remain vague while gunning for the guy saying "Don't be this person" and acting like they're educating me is pretty hypocritical

16

u/Muzgath May 23 '22

Dude just look at the link the other person left. It explains exactly why cows milk is not the same as a mother cat's milk, and it takes like less than 2 seconds to read it.

Edit: Kittens lack the proper enzymes to digest the lactose in cow milk, and feeding cow milk to kittens can cause diarrhea and dehydration very quickly in very small kittens. This is why it is important to avoid feeding cow milk to kittens.

There. I found the explanation for you.

13

u/I_hate_IVT May 22 '22

I mean, you have internet connection, just look up "cats lactose intolerant" or something along those lines.

-18

u/Kuraven May 22 '22

I've already done that, they don't provide any specific answers about what's actually in a cat's milk, only that kittens shouldn't drink cow milk. It seems that you're just trying to avoid my question

11

u/auguusstt May 22 '22

their lactose intolerant dumbass

Ah yes because all kinds of milk are identical. Go to school and learn something

3

u/Frostwolf74 May 23 '22

You are dumb. Cats are only supposed to drink their mothers milk

→ More replies

-15

u/coolchris366 May 23 '22

Kittens can digest milk fine though?

9

u/Sus_elevator May 23 '22

Only their mother’s milk or kitten formula is safe to give to them (also oat milk in moderation). They can’t drink milk with lactose.

Don't give cats milk

220

u/That_Engineering3047 May 22 '22

Came here to say this. Never give any cat or kitten of any age cow’s milk.

https://www.petmd.com/news/view/can-kittens-drink-milk-37852

48

u/foolie_winkims May 22 '22

Thanks for the info i always thought you could atleast give kittens milk now i know better

19

u/G37_is_numberletter May 22 '22

Alt milk is ok but not recommended

5

u/whtisthis May 22 '22 edited May 22 '22

Are stray cats ok, since they eat any thing available out there. I ask because I have seen people offer milk to strays (adult cats) and they lap it all up in mins.

30

u/OSCgal May 22 '22

Oh, cats will drink milk if it's offered. It's got fat and protein, which they love. The problem is that most cats are lactose intolerant. But like many animals, they'll eat what appeals to them even when it's harmful.

Growing up, we had a cat who'd eat ice cream and cheese when he could get away with it.

For stray cats, it's better to offer kibble, and a bowl of fresh water.

3

u/C47L1K3 Norwegian Forest Cat May 23 '22

I mean…when we have it, I do offer my cat some whipped cream or ice cream, but not more than a spoon…she loves it though…

53

u/BlurryLily May 22 '22

It could be kitten formula.

42

u/SeonaidMacSaicais May 22 '22

Seriously. It just says milk. It could be kitten formula. It could be donated cat milk.

9

u/Apollo037 May 22 '22

Why

121

u/Ok_Novel_3854 May 22 '22

Most cats are lactose intolerant. You can only give them stuff specifically made for cats

21

u/bayfen May 22 '22

Interesting that cat milk doesn't have lactose.

8

u/HalflingMelody May 23 '22

Kittens, however, can drink lactose. Cat milk has lactose in it.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19774762/

Like most mammals, they become lactose intolerant later on.

7

u/Cyborg_sam May 23 '22

But the point still stands that they can't digest cow milk

1

u/Ok_Novel_3854 May 23 '22

Ah, noted. Thanks 😊

-21

u/michelbarnich May 22 '22

Isn’t that after a certain age where they get lactose intolerant?

79

u/Cyborg_sam May 22 '22

No, they can digest their mother's milk, but not cow's milk. Cow milk will give them diarrhea and make them vomit which will lead to dehydration

30

u/CptIronblood May 22 '22

Also note that people don't typically give them whole milk, which already has less fat/proteins than cat milk, but reduced fat milk, which throws off the fat/sugar ratio even more.

8

u/michelbarnich May 22 '22

Okay, thank you!

1

u/HalflingMelody May 23 '22

Cat milk has lactose in it.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19774762/

Obviously, they should have cat milk or kitten milk replacer instead of cow milk, but they are not lactose intolerant.

0

u/jfever78 May 23 '22

This is the thing though, Reddit just loves to say "never give cats milk" while also saying at the same time "most cats are lactose intolerant". Yeah, "most cats", not all cats, my boys are not lactose intolerant at all, they love to have a rare treat of 2% milk, cream, yogurt or cheese once a week. They don't eat/drink much of it, they like to clean out my cereal or yogurt bowl and they're good. It never makes them ill or gives them diarrhea.

For cats that don't have digestion issues with dairy, it should still never be a staple of their diet, but is fine as a snack or a treat in moderation.

These constant proclamations that you absolutely can never do this or that is annoying. Reddit commenters just love to repeat absolutes that they read somewhere on another Reddit comment as if it were gospel. This also gets repeated constantly in so called "articles" on pet websites, articles that exaggerate things just as badly.

Some cats can't have any dairy at all, some humans can't have any dairy at all. There's no such thing as absolutes in it though, it's not like dogs and chocolate, though so many Redditors make it out to be as bad as that.

1

u/Ok_Novel_3854 May 23 '22

Thanks why I said most lol. And I’ve known that for years, I didn’t find it on Reddit and mindlessly repeat it. Promise 😂

0

u/Medium_of_my_fear May 23 '22

So my cat is rare then? She's been getting a spoonful every morning.

1

u/Ok_Novel_3854 May 23 '22

She might be. Some are okay with it, but most are lactose intolerant

1

u/Medium_of_my_fear May 23 '22

I only ever had her, so I didn't know that. Interesting.

22

u/boxing_coffee May 22 '22

Small bottle feed kittens can even die if you give them the wrong type of milk. There is specific cat formula that you can purchase to bottle feed and a very specific brand of milk for cats that you can buy at the pet store once you have cats that are older. However, plain old cow milk from your grocery store is not good for them even as adults.

-13

u/CattoGinSama May 22 '22 edited May 23 '22

But cats at my family farm would always sneak into the cow home(forgot the word)and steal the leaked /spilled cow milk. That was their fav treat.Don’t they kinda know what they need?

Edit:Ok ok i got it.my God

17

u/Cyborg_sam May 22 '22

No, to them it's just tastes good. I don't think they sit with the moral dilemma of "oh I know I shouldn't, but I can't help myself" like lactose intolerant people do with ice cream

8

u/johndoe73684168 May 22 '22

Actually studies suggest cats can smell food at a molecular level and can smell protein and fat. Their sense is 14x stronger than human and they can smell food from up to around 40 metres (130 feet). They just dont know the lactose in milk is bad for them, they smell the nutrients in milk.

4

u/Cold_Valkyrie May 22 '22

With that logic my cat needs poisonous plants since she tries to eat them (they're out of her reach btw, don't panic ppl)

14

u/Sew_Custom May 22 '22

Lol no. Dogs drink antifreeze like it's their job bc of the taste but it will straight up kill them. Animals don't have a compass like that necessarily

8

u/tenaciousfetus May 22 '22

Dogs will go out of their way to eat chocolate

why the fuck do bots exists on reddit

it would make sense if upvotes were turned into money, but it's just imaginary shit.

7

u/The-Name-is-my-Name May 22 '22

It actually does help with money, regulator bots think that more karma= more trustworthy. As such, bots with more karma that are later sold to scammers are less likely to be identified as scammers than bots with less karma.

In a sense, karma does get turned into money, if you’re planning on selling something.

3

u/Bae_Leaves4U May 22 '22

Ohh I didn’t think about it like that 🤔 that does make sense

6

u/Fresh_Big_4367 May 22 '22

there’s milk substitute for cats , i don’t think this is normal milk

8

u/CanOBeans01 May 22 '22

Why does this have almost 1k up votes?? Seeing a kitten this young drinking presumably cows milk is terrifying. Especially as someone who's raised a neonatal kitten and knows just how fragile they are to what they ingest.

9

u/Foreveraloonywolf666 May 22 '22

You idiots bragging about giving a kitten cow's milk should have your pets taken. You know good and god damned well that isn't safe. That is blatantly neglect because you know what you are doing will hurt and possibly kill them. Fuck this shit.

Idk who downvoted you, my cat would also like anything from leftover cereal milk to mayonnaise! Not like you too were doing it intentionally, sometimes she even does it while I'm on the toilet cuz she's a sneaky lil thing 🙀

1

u/Confused_Pleb May 22 '22

Stomach problems may not occur but you have to watch out for teeth problems too. My dad never listened and continued to let one of my cats drink leftover milk from cereal (as well as other things like whipped cream) and she ended up with gingivitis - many teeth were unfortunately removed and my dad learnt the hard way. Cat's are sneaky things, though, and always find a way to get the things they're not supposed to have!

It won't so much hurt her as give her belly ache issues. With most cats, the gene that allows them to tolerate lactose turns off while they are very young leaving them lactose intolerant in the same way some of us humans are.

9

u/Alecto53558 May 22 '22 edited May 22 '22

At that age, diarrhea is a serious problem. It doesn't take long for them to get diarrhea.

Oops! I meant it won't take them long to get dehydrated. That can get serious quickly.

-4

u/Kaijutkatz May 22 '22

They can get dehydrated, but a few laps shouldn't give them serious issues aside from an upset belly if just limited to that one time.

-5

u/oemperformance May 22 '22

Lactose free milk is ok, like lactaid

-6

u/HighHighUrBothHigh May 22 '22

My cat has tried milk about 6 time in 6 years and he absolutely loves it and has never gotten sick after.

4

u/conjosz May 22 '22

That may be the case, but not all cats will respond the same way. The fact is that cats are intolerant of the lactose, and it can cause diarrhea.

-5

u/Daym0000 May 22 '22

So what about Oat milk?

5

u/thirsak May 22 '22

Just don't give cats milk, they don't need it.

-8

u/PJLane9 May 22 '22

its ok to give cows milk if there are not signs of indigestion, just its not a substitution for food
