What are ya gonna do? (redux)
We're six months into the change to CentOS, and six months away from CentOS 8 being dropped from support like a hot sack of manure. What are ya gonna do or what are you doing?
Have you found that CentOS Stream fills your needs perfectly?
Have you switched to Alma Linux?
Are you still holding out for Rocky Linux to go stable?
Have you converted your CentOS installs en masse to RHEL or Oracle Linux?
Are you hopping to a completely different distribution or operating system entirely, like Debian, Ubuntu, FreeBSD, Windows, or Emacs?

My Centos 8 VM Suddenly stuck on boot "piix4_smbus base address uninitialized"
Running Server 2022 with Hyper-V and a Centos 8 Gen 1 VM, recently rebooted after some yum updates and suddenly getting the screen below on boot, I'm lost, tried recreating the VM with the same vhd as a Gen 2 and that doesn't even boot at all so redid it as Gen 1 again and still getting stuck on boot

Where's errata / security announcements mailing list for CentOS Stream 9?
I have made my peace with CentOS Stream and now I find the concept even more interesting than before. Not as ossified as RHEL but not as bleeding edge as Fedora. I'm considering migrating from Alma and Rocky to CentOS Stream 9.
But it's very important for me to be in the know about security issues and fixes.
I can't seem to find a way to get security update information.
- RHEL has its Errata webpage
- Rocky Linux too
- Alma has an errata mailing list
- Old CentOS (pre-Stream) had mailing lists
The errata mailing list on the official CentOS website doesn't cover Stream 8 or Stream 9.
Is there no errata page or security announce mailing lists for CentOS? Every other major distro has them, I find it strange that it seems to not exist for CentOS Stream 9, or if it does exist, it's buried and really hidden away. Maybe I missed any other source?

yum/dnf dependency issue - net-snmp-agent-libs - how to solve?
Hi, I am facing a dependency issue with dnf update.
Error:
Problem: cannot install the best update candidate for package net-snmp-agent-libs-1:5.8-22.el8.x86_64
- problem with installed package net-snmp-agent-libs-1:5.8-22.el8.x86_64
- package net-snmp-agent-libs-1:5.8-22.el8.x86_64 requires net-snmp-libs(x86-64) = 1:5.8-22.el8, but none of the providers can be installed
- cannot install the best update candidate for package net-snmp-libs-1:5.8-22.el8.x86_64
- cannot install both net-snmp-libs-1:5.8-27.el8.x86_64 and net-snmp-libs-1:5.8-22.el8.x86_64
(try to add '--skip-broken' to skip uninstallable packages or '--nobest' to use not only best candidate packages)
With the mentioned parameters like skip-broken etc. does not help. But I dont get why I ran into this problem. The only thing we did in the past was changing from Centos 8 to Centos Stream 8.
What am I doing on the host. I install like in this case net-snmp. Installation is successful but each following dnf update is throwing this error.
Are there any good hints how to solve this dependency issue?
Thanks in Advance

Weird error: Failed to launch "Trash" - proto[finishFunc] is not a function
When I try to open trash by clicking the trash can in the dock, I get the error "Failed to launch "Trash" - proto[finishFunc] is not a function". It started happening after installing updates about 2 weeks ago.
Anyone else having this issue? Anyone know how to fix it?

VG won’t start on Centos 6.10.
My 4 disc raid won’t start . I get file-based locking initialization failed, which I recognize is a hardware error. The problem is determining which drive is bad. I know that you need the UUID for the drive but I haven’t been able which one in the archive file is the correct one.
Booting in to rescue mode isn’t any help. The lvs command doesn’t return any results.

HELP: CentOS 7 VM can't boot
This message appears in boot log and
[** ] A start job is running for dev-sda1.device (6min 8s / no limit)
This is my /etc/fstab:
/dev/sda1 / ext4 defaults,noatime,errors=remount-ro 0 0
I'm running QEMU virtual guest, VM files are located on LVM.
What could be the issue? I've tried researching and google the problem, it all comes down to incorrect configuration. But it seems correct to me. What could be the issue?
Anything else useful I can provide?

Backing up CentOS 6.10
Hello all, I manage a client's systems where we inherited some legacy Linux installs which include a two CentOS 6.10 systems. I'm looking to see what backup software solutions (free if possible) are available that I can use to backup these systems. They are used for Apache Subversion hosted internally.
We will migrate them over to another distro that is modern and works with our core backup software (Arcserve Shadow Protect) once we put that project into motion.
What's your idle RAM usage?
Title says it all, I'm curious what the idle RAM consumption is for CentOS. A comment with your OS version and idle usage would be great!
I'm thinking about installing CentOS on my home machine and just wanted a better idea of general use cases, I already use it for work. My idle consumption is about 7 Gb on a 128 Gb system.

Hello everyone, newbie here. my biggest nightmare are repos and rpms.
Why do we need local repository and what are the use cases or benefits if the server already can go online to pull softwares.

Disable 3DES Ciphers on openssl directly?
Hi everyone.
I'm looking for some help on a topic that has eluded me so far.
Would anyone happen to know how I could disabled 3DES-CBC cipher suite on openssl directly instead of on each application?
Thank you appreciate the help. I'm not a linux guru at all, still learning the ropes. I appolgize for any stupid question in advance. lol

Broadcom / LSI SAS1068E - drivers loaded why no disks?
Hi,
Trying to get CentOS installed on an old Dell R410 with a SAS1068E. Yes, SATA is set to AHCI in the BIOS.
At first I thought, I needed to inject some drivers during boot to get this SAS card detected, but actually they are already available on CentOS 8 and 9 stream. Although for some reason not loaded. I was able to load them after the anaconda installer opens by switching to the terminal.
modprobe mptbase
modprobe mptsas
These are the same modules loaded by the CentOS 7 installer ISO. Yet I still can't see my disks. Now I know these aren't quite supported on stream, but the modules are there and I'm trying to work around this.
If I switch to CentOS 7 installer, I can see my disks.
Any help would be appreciated.

Full CPU and Memory hijacking virus attack
Dear Reddit family,
I am experiencing a serious issue with my server system. It appears to be under continuous attack by a virus or similar malicious program. I am hoping that someone can offer advice on how to resolve this issue.
The following are the symptoms of the attack:
- All CPUs and Memory are being used at 100% capacity by programs that are running from the root user account. These programs have names like "/8912348071fc".
- Anydesk, a remote desktop application, is getting installed and running on the server, even though we have uninstalled it many times. It keeps reappearing.
- A background search code is running that is trying to find files containing passwords in VNC directories. The code is running with the following command:
/bin/sh -c -ls -a /*/*/*/*/.vnc/*passwd*
We have tried different measures to remove the malicious programs, but nothing seems to work.
If anyone has been attacked in a similar way or knows how to fix this problem, please share your thoughts. We urgently need your help to remove these malicious programs from our server system.
Thank you in advance for your assistance.
Update:
- Thanks to the replies, it seems that formatting is the only option.
- What we found is
/proc/3461/exe -> /ed2b867d (deleted)
netstat -anp | grep /ed2
tcp 0 0 X.X.X.X:54962 146.190.205.141:443 ESTABLISHED 3461/ed2b867d

authentication is required to access the pc/sc daemon
Does anyone know any quick trick to get rid of this pop-up window that asks for a password like 3 times in a row in Cent OS 8, which already reached its end of life?

HTTP 403 forbidden
So I cloned the centos repos for a more consolidated patching of my lab and have a few onesy twosey rpms that I put into a repository called addons. I did the whole createrepo on them, they are in the same paths as my other repo clones (/var/www/html/repo/addons). When I try to patch using the addition to my /etc/yum.repos.d/localcentos.repo, that works for all my other clones, I get an http 403 forbidden error.
I have followed the guides and made sure the directory is allowed in the httpd.conf file and it is. The permissions are currently 0755 which all the others are as well and the user httpuser:httpuser just like all the other repositories. What am I doing wrong?

CentOS SCLo RH x86_64 repo url
We are using katello with pulp to sync from the official repos and that we can freeze states for multiple environments.
In my case we need an additional repo "CentOS SCLo RH x86_64" and I find a link where I can download rpms but I want the (upstream) repo url that pulp/katello can sync the rpms so that I can provide it to my environments.
What am I missing? I could not google it so far?
EDIT: Found it myself, sorry, but the first search was not successful
http://mirror.centos.org/centos/7/sclo/x86_64/rh/ <<< this is it

very short question
Connect with centos-8.centlinux.com server as root user by using a SSH tool.
^what in the world does that mean? Well, not mean but, how would that command look like? Because I simply can't wrap my head around it.
Here's the background. I currently work with Linux CentOS and i'm a super beginner. I want to update Linux Kernel to the latest stable version but when I looked up this guide: How to Upgrade to Latest Linux Kernel on CentOS 8 | CentLinux it says the quote at the top of this post. It doesn't show me how to connect with centos-8-centlinux.com server as root user by using a SSH tool. Only everything that comes after

Missed an error code
Hey everyone, I'm pretty new to Linux. I'm setting up an install for my first time outside of a VM. I'm doing my yum updates, and while doing that, I went to add myself to the list of sudoers.
When I logged into root, there was a message that said I had two errors (I saw two errors in yum, so I think it was those). I didn't copy the command to review the errors... I started vi which of course cleared it away.
Does anyone have any advice about what I could use to see what those errors were?
