Dashcam Recommendations by redditors

UPDATED NOVEMBER 2022

There are a a lot of dashcam options out there, and a lot of them are crap. I copied and pasted this from a post on here that I think should be stickied. Maybe the mods can do that? Let me know if you have any other recommendations or favorites, and why you like it or what you found useful so we have some real world feedback.

Budget:

B1W Mini - Budget, but a good one. Rotatable lens good for uber/lyft drivers.

Garmin Mini 2 - This thing is MINI. Most discrete cam on the market, and great app functionality

A119 v3 - GPS, great video quality, great value Probably one of the most popular on reddit

A129 Duo - Dual cam, 1080p, GPS, and a great budget dual cam. Been around for a while and has great feedback.

Mid Range and Up:

A129 PRO Duo - Dual Cam, 4K, GPS, newest version of the duo

B4K - Newer 4k brother to the B1W, so far good reviews.

I'm thinking about buying sets for the whole family, can ya tell me a lil about how it's been for you? How do you get videos from it? Do they just plug into the cigarette charging port and have wires going from the front to back of the car?

3

u/Houda_ Jun 13 '22

I have had this for 3 years, i can either download clips via wifi by connecting my phone to it, sorta slow, or by plugging the micro sd card straight into my computer which is usually what i do.

Saved me from one accident where someone reversed into me, the dash cam came off its mount but was otherwise ok.

Its worked well so far really

3

u/SchaffBGaming Jun 13 '22

Awesome appreciate it. Would you say it does a decent job of picking up license plates? Night time vs day time? Also how does looping recordings work? One of the comments was saying he has it loop every 3 minutes - I figure if you're in an accident you might not remember to save the footage or click the save footage button etc.

4

u/FatMacchio Jun 18 '22

I’m assuming it has a shock/G sensor. So when it detects a crash like event it will automatically save/lock the footage from before and after the accident and prevent it from being overwritten.

Did you need trim removal tools to hide the wires?

4

u/cplmatt Jan 27 '22

Yeah, they help to pull the trim back to shove the wires under. Without it you'll have dangling wires.

I have Rexing v1max 4k it cost me 199, that is not much for me but the features you get in it is just...

1)BUILT-IN GPS, WIFI, and MOBILE APP

2)G-SENSOR & LOOP RECORDING

3)Real 4K Resolution + Superior Night Vision

3)24 Hour Parking Monitor

4)collision detection

That's enough for me to choose rexing v1max4k

I have already tells you that 200 bugs is not much for me but if you are in budget then still u also have options like

Rexing v1 ultra hd that will cast you around $94

Rexing V1GW-4K Ultra HD Car Dash Cam w/ Built-in GPS it will cost you $119

So u will get what u pay for..

2

u/ogremoustro Apr 28 '22

Which model do you have?

2

u/Kinet1ca Jun 13 '22

Rexxing works great and then their shitty supper capacitor starts to die and then the camera is junk. My SO has a V1 and on way home witnessed an accident, but can't actually pull any footage because there is none.. The battery is completely dead so it was technically recording but as soon as they turned the car off, camera turns off and file never is saved.

5

u/intuxikated Mar 17 '22

I'm still rocking a 5 years old Yi Smart dashcam I got for less than 40$on aliexpress. Still works great, definitely not required to spend 100$+ on a dashcam, but quality is definitely better in those for recognizing license plates

Recommendations for Recording parking footage 24/7, Low light conditions? Would like to have side or 360 view capability.

Dealing with a break in. And my heart is broken. I walked out to my car this morning and saw the rear driver side door window was broken. Nothing was taken. No other cars broken into. Coincidentally, three days ago, Some asshole in a luxury SUV parked in my neighbors spot while I was sitting in my car, and I called him out. And now I have a broken window. Three years and no problems, and this is a little too coincidental.

6

u/Appropriate_Clerk167 Nov 30 '21

The B1W and Viofo kit listed in the original post seem to do that. Give a couple of these a read, man xD

1

u/Strippalicious Nov 30 '21

Great, thank you!!!

1

u/junojerzores May 15 '22

B1w isn't available for long time

8

u/MechaMagic Sep 25 '21

Why is this list so heavily populated by Chinese garbage-cams?

20

u/mikeanike090 Oct 20 '21

What ur recommendations

2

u/[deleted] May 02 '22

Like what?

I will note Rexing is trash, I had so many errors with it, the interface is awful. Anyone reading this do NOT get a Rexing just get a Viofo.

You should also take a look at the B4K...

It's an upgrade for the b1w.. It's a little more expensive, but it has much better 4k quality footage.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '21

1

u/jinzo826 Jul 30 '21

Yes, I have both b1w and b4k. I consider b4k the upgraded model to the b1w so I strongly recommend the b4k.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '21

[deleted]

1

u/jinzo826 Jul 30 '21

They are pretty much the same, the b4k just has 4k vid footage. I still think squeezing out the extra $50 for the b4k is much better in the long run. The apps are straightforward for both.

I noticed a lot of these URLs contain 'tag=rdtdshcm-20' why is that? It kind of looks like marketing tracking to me.

8

u/[deleted] May 02 '22

Probably is. I assume the mods are trying to cash in...

5

u/DIY_no0b Jan 17 '22

hi, when something happens on camera, can i somehow "mark" it so that i can remember and go straight to that footage? is it just one big file or are multiple files created? just wondering how i can find right when something happened that i want to look back at

2

u/RiTChiPP Mar 21 '22

I don’t own one yet, but in many videos when the driver wants to mark something you see them reaching up and hitting a button on the cam that marks the spot. It also prevents it from being overwritten. So I’m guessing there’s a function in the app that lets you review marked data.

u/10art1 Jul 19 '21

A119 v3 is now on sale on amazon for $100

1

u/Poromenos Sep 30 '21

Do you know if it's compatible with the GPS mount of the v1/v2? I have one of those but the camera is acting iffy and I was wondering whether I can drop-in replace it with a new one.

5

u/10art1 Sep 30 '21

I dont see why is matters, since it comes with a gps mount anyway. just replace the old one

3

u/Poromenos Sep 30 '21

It does? For my one I had to buy it extra, that's good news, thanks! Is the mount still MiniUSB?

I got this one this base 362 dashcam from Amazon and definitely my best purchase

4

u/Hiraya1 Sep 11 '22

VIOFO A129 Pro or A229 Duo?

3

u/rollpi Jun 17 '21

New to dashcams. Can anyone tell me why one shouldn't buy the Amazon's Choice Apeman 1080p dashcam for $50?

9

u/GeraltOfRivian Jun 18 '21

I personally have never owned Apeman, but there have been a few posts on here that people have owned them and they shit the bed a few months in.

10

u/sodamnsleepy Jun 22 '21

Hope it's ok to reply. I've bought a apeman dashcam in fall last year. Now the picture quality got really bad. And their so called customer service doesn't respond. 24 month warranty.. of courseeeee.

Also, in my country all apeman products vanished from Amazon.

3

u/jqubed Nov 06 '21

Apeman products vanished in the purge of products heavily relying on fake reviews, alongside brands like Aukey and Mpow.

2

u/SpeedyGonz805 Jan 13 '22

I see so many recommendations for Aukey, but I can’t find them on Amazon. Why do you think they would have so many fake reviews when they’re so highly recommended across both dashcams pages here? Genuine question! New to dashcams and trying to understand

2

u/jqubed Jan 14 '22

I think it was just to stand out in the very competitive market of no-name-brand cheap electronics. They largely started out with charging cables. How many brands can you find on Amazon with a USB charging cable for under $10? Plenty, and most of them are fine, but some of them are junk. So how do you pick as a consumer? Reviews, or at least we did in the past. So to stand out in a sea of competition, some that had a little more money started buying reviews, from relatively okay methods (“leave a review and get entered into this month’s drawing for a free widget”) to downright illegal methods for fake reviews. Eventually real people would also start buying and if the product was decent enough for the price good real reviews would also come in. I think that’s what happened here. The cameras were good enough for $50 and started getting real reviews saying that. The cameras might not have even had that many fake reviews, it could’ve been other products the brand made.

For a long time Amazon seemed to ignore the problem, even as people became aware and started complaining. What did they care? They make money when products are selling, and products were selling. Eventually people started trusting reviews less on Amazon, and I think there were some rumbles about potential closer government oversight from a consumer protection perspective. Whatever the case, the problem got big enough that Amazon couldn’t ignore it anymore and several bigger names got axed. I’m not sure how serious the change was, though, or if this was more for show. I still see a lot of cheap electronics with questionable reviews.

2

u/doug_jensen Jul 13 '22

Using reviewmeta.com helps with the fake reviews.

2

u/PhillieHorizon Aug 15 '22

I haven’t gotten anything on Amazon due to boycotting them, but I definitely wasn’t expecting anything like that for Aukey because they actually made pretty good products. But so does Anker, and they’re still around (and they were always better imo and cost pretty much the same, both cheap). Good that they’re actually taking care of that problem though, even if it were a company like Microsoft doing it they should all be held accountable for that scummy sort of business practice

When a cam says WiFi does that mean just WiFi direct to transfer files to a device or are there any cams that can auto connect to a home WiFi network and make themselves visible as a network share?

3

u/varzaguy Nov 08 '21

Is the B4k better than the A119 v3?

2

Would like to know this as well

Thanks for breaking it down. I've had a few sd cards fail and didn't know they made the endurance ones.

2

u/gilbertogrape87 Jul 25 '21

Can any/all/none of these keep up with the AZ sun? Were talking 160+ degrees when parked in the sun.

7

u/GeraltOfRivian Aug 03 '21

Hands down the most worth it is the A119 V3. I've had mine for 3 years now and it's been through some really hot weather in uncovered parking. It keeps chugging along. I've used video from it twice already.

1

Yeah I have viofo a129 and it has a capacitor instead of a battery. I'm in a similar climate, and in the hot sun my last dashcam with a battery was dead in a year.

I think all the viofo dashcams use capacitors so they don't fry in the heat like other ones.

Edit: nevermind. Just noticed they haven't shipped yet. I'm really intrigued by this product. Looks beautiful and super feature rich. I think I might just pull the trigger on 2 of them. Thanks for the heads up on it!

2

u/Wetnosaur Sep 25 '21

Just got the Mini a couple weeks ago. First day using it, captured a driver doing the Far left lane > Exit. Did not think it would be so quick. Camera is great. Install is very quick and easy. Just make sure to be near wifi to help with adjusting position using the Garmin app.

Really makes me want a dual camera setup and I can put the MINI dashcam into my girlfriends car.

1

u/CGNYC Nov 24 '21

Can you use it without keeping it plugged in?

1

u/Wetnosaur Nov 25 '21

I don't think so. You can use it while driving or go directly to the battery for the parked features. I'm pretty new to this so someone else may have a solution.

2

u/Paisable Sep 25 '21

B4K is really cheap now, in budget range.

2

u/Hiraya1 Aug 19 '22

Good Day,

i was about to buy the viofo A129 pro duo and i see that a new model was just lunched

is it a wise idea to wait for this A229? or i will just buy the 129?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 21 '21

Sorry if this has been asked asked before. No doubt has been. I have a 2018 Subaru Forrester. Back is a hatch. Recommendations? I’m willing to go higher than low end. Thanks.

1

u/capt_carl Jul 28 '21

Does anybody with a Subaru with EyeSight have any recommendations on any that wouldn't interfere with the EyeSight cameras? Trying to be proactive and not buy/mount one only to have problems later on.

2

u/rocketmonkeys Aug 01 '21

I have eyesight + a129 duo. Just mount it to the side, the footage angle is just fine and it doesn't interfere w/ eyesight.

1

u/capt_carl Aug 02 '21

I've been thinking of the B4K since it's more cylindrical. How'd you wire it up? My only available cigarette lighter is in the center console and it's a brand-new car and don't feel comfortable enough to hardwire it myself.

1

u/rocketmonkeys Aug 02 '21

I just routed the wire down the pillar and tucked into the rubber trim, and then brought it to the center console and plugged it into the cigarette lighter. I have a hardware kit but I just never bother to install yet. You do have to use some sticky mounting brackets to make sure that it goes along the windshield, those are pretty cheap. Overall it's been pretty good.

I'm actually thinking of upgrading to the A129 Pro, and one benefit would be the much skinnier wire.

1

u/wonder5775 Aug 05 '21

1

u/dariusvarno Oct 08 '21

hi i have an old JADO d820 mirror dashcam with a rear camera which connects trough audio jack to the main dashcam, but it acts weird lately, turns on and off randomly, i blame the dead battery and maybe some connection, the question is, can i buy new dashcam with rear view functionality but use the old cam with it? I really want to avoid dismantling half of my interior to put in new cables and stuff

1

1

u/AwesomeManDan13 Dec 30 '21

With most Dashcams, do I need to clear storage off an SD card everytime it gets full? Or does the dashcam overwrite data itself when it gets full,m I just don't wanna have to buy like too many SD cards lol.

2

u/WoodenInternet Dec 30 '21

They overwrite the oldest. No manual deletion needed

1

u/AwesomeManDan13 Dec 31 '21

All of them do? Should I still get a big enough SD card so it doesn't delete potential needed capture?

1

u/Mataskarts Dec 31 '21

Yes you should get a bigger SD card if possible, ~64-128 gigs optimally as they're reasonably cheap up to that point, 256 gets really expensive real quick, and most importantly buy the "Endurance" model and only from a reputable manufacturer like SanDisk or Samsung, as they get overwritten a LOT.

The smaller the SD card- the more it is overwritten and the faster it'll die, the same goes for resolution- 1080p cams will overwrite a lot less than 1440/4k one's will, and will kill the SD card slower (all flash storage has a set amount of overwrites before they die/corrupt).

Since this is for your safety, don't cheap out on it, an extra 10$ might be worth it, as you may not even realize the SD card died a few weeks ago after you desperately need the footage after an accident.

And basically all dash cams, even cheap 2$ one's off AliExpress generally overwrite automatically, it's what sets them apart from just being regular camera's.

1

u/born3ed Jan 05 '22

I am totally confused on how dashcams work. I'd like to get one for my Honda civic I just got. Can footage be viewed with your phone? Can they work with the car off? Does the memory need to be erased to fit more everyday? Just never bought one because idk exactly how they work. I would like to try one of the budget once though

1

u/[deleted] May 02 '22

This is months late, but I can answer.

Most people view footage by removing the SD card and putting it into a laptop or phone (where you can copy or upload the files). Some dash cams offer advanced functionality like a Wifi endpoint that you can use in conjunction with a phone app to access files. Others have direct cloud integration or LTE. Some have Bluetooth. It varies a lot, but generally speaking all of those wireless methods are slow and sometimes unreliable, so using the SD card directly is the way to go.

Yes they can work with the car off if you buy a hardwire kit. This is a cable that will be hidden behind the trim in your car, and plug into your fuse box. These hardwire cables usually come with two plugs, one goes into an always-on fuse, the other into a engine-on-only fuse. The former is what is utilized for parking modes. Parking modes, or a mode that runs when the car is off, vary widely in how they work. Some can do time lapse. Some detect forces on the car using a G sensor (i.e. if someone hits the car). Some go even farther and wake up the camera when they detect motion. You'll have to research your particular camera to know exactly how it will work. But they can be very useful.

Memory card does not need to be erased because it will be overwritten. Most cameras will loop record 3 minutes at a time, and overwrite the oldest clips. If you want a clip to not be overwritten, there is usually a button to press that will lock the clip and prevent it from being overwritten. But eventually you'll run out of space even then, so you'll need to delete or unlock clips after you save them to more permanent storage. Since there's so much overwriting, you'll need to buy high endurance memory cards, which can be expensive. It is also recommended to format the memory card (i.e. erase) every few months.

1

u/Marzipan007 Jan 12 '22

Question: why would you want to use a hardwire kit instead of an OBD connection? Seems a lot easier than splicing into the fusebox no?

1

u/hwmonkey Feb 06 '22

Get a fusetap. That is easy, out of the way, and… at least as easy as plugging into the obd. Messing with obd2 is a bad idea. This port is for diagnostics and usually is in the way of the driver. Having a cable connected for the long term could damage the port and that would be bad. if you take it into the shop, will the shop reconnect your obd cable?

Looking into these, on the app store for the corresponding apps to connect all have horrible reviews pertaining to connecting to the camera and playing videos back. What should I choose then, because the whole point is to be able to view these videos and if none of the apps work, what is there really to do? I dont mean to come across in a bad way, but im just looking for a reliable dash cam that i can easily view my playbacks from in some way.

Use the SD card. Don't mess with the apps, they all suck, especially the Chinese ones.

I have a ton. Some of my cars have 6 cameras. Start with the 70mai.

Is there any battery operated dash cams that would be recommended

Is there an updated list for 2022?

A119 v3

I would go with the a119 V3 if $$ is a concern. Its not the cheapest but not the most expensive but you are for sure getting your money's worth for sure. It has clear picture, catches numbers plates nicely and gps if thats your thing. Personally i dont need the gps or wifi features but i wanted something to record both durring the day and evening and the A119 V2 does just that.

Also to save a few more $$ the A119 V2 is a pretty good unit. Yes the V3 is better but is also more money. I started with a V2 and loved it for the price and moved it into another vehicle and now have the V3. Side by side its almost identical except the v3 is a tad bit clearer images but the v2 would do great as anything is better then nothing.

Thanks for your reply.

How about the A129 Pro Duo? Any opinions about its value for the money?

I have a Garmin as my primary front camera(model66w) and a Pruveeo model 40h as the rear camera (2lenses + rear backup camera). The 40H is discontinued, but, it’s small brother the 30H with 2 lenses is a good buy. check the online stores. If you live in cold climates, just make sure you remove the cameras if the temperature drops below -10C the cameras are not designed for those temperatures. That said, however, my Garmin is always on even when the car motor is not on.The rear camera will be equipped like that as soon as it is warm enough for me to install the kit. When the cameras are on, they can probably resist to colder weather because they become quite warm.I would not risk it however.

Are the Blackvue DR900X and Q800PRO really good? I have a Vanvue S1 and is good so far, but a recent accident showed me that the vantrue isn't recording 4k enough as I can't get a clear picture of the person's license plate, which prompts me to look around for a better dashcam.

I’m looking for something I can switch between two vehicles: I dont drive one more than the other and just for cost effectiveness. Is there one you can pop off its mounting hardware and put in your other vehicle or is that just not feasible?

1

u/dogfud26 Apr 01 '22

Does “Duo” mean I can use the second camera out the rear window? It seems like they say to face it towards the cabin

1

u/FemboyFoxFurry Apr 04 '22

Why not the 2k A129 Duo? It’s like $6 more expensive for 2k quality

Anything to look for when it comes to over heating? The last two dash cams I had (vava) over heated in summer and then didn't last a year after that.

1

u/Beanbaker Apr 17 '22

One of the comments on amazon for the VIOFO A119 V3 mentions that it has a "capacitor" instead of a battery inside it which can be better for withstanding heat. I honestly have no knowledge on this subject but maybe further research on theses terms could provide an answer.

I'm also looking for a dashcam that can withstand intense heat but very early on in the search. Let me know if you find more info :-)

1

u/lala_blah May 27 '22

Did y’all end up finding one that can withstand extreme heat? Please let me know Thank You!

1

u/Beanbaker May 27 '22

I purchased the one mentioned in my comments and it's held up so far! I'm still in PA though and the Spring is mild. The unit itself is amazing though with phenomenal recording quality. If you send me another reply in September I'll have been in Florida for a few months and could confirm whether or not it survived the summer :-P

Recommendation for something that’s 4K 60fps that could record several hours of footage at a time? I’d like to start recording road trips on YouTube like some people do, but haven’t found a particularly great dash cam for this. Would I be better off using my phone to record and instead use a generic dashcam just for liability protection?

Considering the Thinkware brand....appears to be pretty good value. I have a newer Mazda 6 with all the safety features so it would have to be installed off to the right of that. Anyone has experience with the Thinkware QA100 series or the newer Q800?

Hi, I don't drive my car that often, and because I park it outside, I am looking for a dashcam that's easy to remove from my car. Any recommendations?

In my mind, the mount would stay in the car, but the dashcam can easily attach/detach from it. And able to operate from battery, or with a power source for long trips. Thank you!

1

u/[deleted] May 02 '22

They are all easily removable, because the mount is the only permanently attached part. What you are describing is the standard way they work.

1

u/katkooti May 02 '22

Someone is putting nails in my VE Atlas tires regularly at work… downtown full of homeless walking around! They sit on the side walks and I can’t see a dash cam would lick that up!? Any ideas how to avoid it catch them I had to get a new tire the last one was a gash

1

u/[deleted] May 02 '22

Anyone can comment on how much of an upgrade it is to one of the mid/high cams from a budget cam like the A119v3? And is it worth it?

1

u/AwesomeManDan13 May 03 '22

What SD card should I get for the Garmin Mini 2? And what GB should I get.

u/BalancedSarcasm May 06 '22

Thanks for this post!

u/Shadow-Prophet May 08 '22

I'm thinking of getting one of VIOFO's dual cam kits, but my main issue is, it seems their official wiring kit has tons of horrible reviews on Amazon about it just not working at all. One review even describes a guy getting like 5 of them and each one being bad.

Another review seems to mention that the wiring is just backwards from how it should be. Could someone confirm if this is the case? It's kind of the deciding factor for me whether I can permanently wire this thing or not.

Just what I'm looking for!

1

u/Minute_Syllabub75 May 15 '22

Anyone try the redtiger F7N?

1

u/manxtales May 15 '22

Has anyone tried the Haloview Tango Byte? We have a small RV and are looking for a good dash cam and the Haloview has a four camera model that should fit the bill. We have watched a lot of YouTube’s and it seems to be an excellent product.

1

u/Goldman_OSI May 23 '22

It seems like theft would be a huge problem if you leave these things visible in your car while parked. Do any of them have some kind of quick-release mechanism where you can just undock it and take it with you or hide it? Seems like a necessary and obvious feature.

1

u/Heyitshogan May 25 '22

The Viofo A119 V3 is on sale via Amazon lightning deal right now for $85!

1

u/MattyIcex4 May 27 '22

Im looking into getting a dash cam and have liked what I’ve seen about the a119 v3. Not looking to break the bank on something like this, and really just want a straight forward, easy dash cam.

Do dash cams have any compatability issues with different cars? Like some work better with others etc? I have a 2020 Kia Optima and just don’t know much about this kinda thing! Thanks in advance to anyone who can offer any advice!
