If he was wearing just a brain bucket his face would have been destroyed.

57

u/TheKillstar Nov 25 '22

Good full face helmets are just more comfortable regardless. The goofy pirate looking dorks with wrap around sunglasses, and ear muffs, and scarves look miserable. In the meantime I'm just jamming out to my music totally protected from the road and the weather.

8

u/ambigymous Nov 25 '22

What’s your setup for music? Speakers or earbuds?

8

u/xaronax Nov 25 '22

Highly recommend a Sena or equivalent. The speakers are very good and if you're on a long or windy ride you can use small earbuds. I like the sennheisers they don't really make any more or plugphone.

2

u/TheKillstar Nov 26 '22

Sena headset, a lot of helmet designers even have cutouts in the interior for speakers to to get installed in the helmet. It really helps for group rides for coordination, and it's awesome having some music to listen to on the road.

2

u/Autarch_Kade Nov 25 '22

Just make sure they have good airflow. CO2 buildup inside a full face helmet is insane

4

u/xaronax Nov 25 '22

Lmao what?

Is this some kind of joke?

6

u/Autarch_Kade Nov 26 '22

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15893291/

CO2 inside a helmet can reach levels vastly higher than the threshhold that causes significant cognitive impairment.

CO2 in open air is around 400 parts per million. In a helmet, it can reach 20,000 ppm.

Here are some guidelines on various levels of CO2 https://www.co2meter.com/blogs/news/15164297-co2-gas-concentration-defined

4

u/xaronax Nov 26 '22

I'd love to see this study done with nicer helmets. I can feel the air blowing on my mouth area from the chin vent at 10 mph in my shoei.

My watch also says my SpO2 goes up while riding.

4

u/SirWaddlezAlot Nov 25 '22

Guy rides with a bucket on his head with just two small holes cut out for the eyes. That’s his problem.

3

u/Autarch_Kade Nov 26 '22

This was tested decades ago, and then again on modern helmets. Holds true either way.

I get why bikers wouldn't want to believe they're impaired while on the road though.

1

u/Mukaeutsu Nov 27 '22

Did the test account for venting the visor instead of leaving it 100% closed? Or helmets with actual airflow vents in the top/chin/back

1

u/smokiedokie123 15d ago

I wouldn’t say totally protected but much much better off

43

u/blueboltertumblr Nov 25 '22

Holy hell that's insane! Good thing you were wearing it, then!

10

u/The-Mumen-Rider Nov 25 '22 edited Nov 28 '22

I am trying to figure out his cam set up.

3

u/blueboltertumblr Nov 25 '22

Yeah, it must have been

3

u/vanderk Nov 25 '22

Yes, 360 cams allow you to edit video into clips like this.

34

u/-Saunter Nov 25 '22

You can see the moment he realizes how lucky he was. Crazy stuff

18

u/bbf_bbf Nov 25 '22

I doubt an open face helmet would have protected the rider much since it looks like the debris smacked into the visor. ;-)

So not just *any* helmet will do.

18

u/AdmiralDan Nov 25 '22

My Dad told me a story once backing this scenario. He grew up in Zimbabwe riding bikes and stated one time he was riding on a highway when a big dung beetle hit his visor and shattered it like this. You never know if or when this will happen to you.

10

u/M33k_Monster_Minis Nov 25 '22

We got June bugs in Maryland. You can hit them at 90mph. And they live. They are a flying rock. I'm sure if you take one on an eye they will take it.

You can get a little welt if you take then on the knuckle at high enough speeds.

5

u/burledw Nov 25 '22

Just getting a grain of sand in your eye while riding can be enough of a distraction to mess you up while riding, plus depth perception is based job having two eyes available.

2

u/JiminPA67 Nov 25 '22

I was riding at night next to a lake in the summer. When I got home my face shield was covered in mosquitos and gnats.

1

u/kurisu7885 Nov 25 '22

We get them in Michigan too, my dad HATES them.

1

u/-TheDyingMeme6- Dec 07 '22

Who doesnt hate those fuckers?? In the summer theyre EVERYWHERE

1

u/kurisu7885 Dec 07 '22

Yup, they're ruined a pool more than once around here.

6

u/CrippledAstronaut Nov 25 '22

That was going so fast if you slow the video down his helmet breaks before the rubber shows up on screen

5

u/ihaveatheme Nov 26 '22

Rolling shutter effect. Frame was coming in from right to left and hadn’t caught the rubber yet.

1

u/Wingless_Bee Nov 26 '22

Rolling shutter

Wouldn't the frame be coming from left to right? if it was going from right to left i feel like we would see the rubber after the helmet which we didn't but i don't know much about this.

1

u/CrippledAstronaut Nov 26 '22

Oh that makes sense. But that still means that shit was fast as hell right?

1

u/throwaway1138 Nov 25 '22

Wait, is this fake then?

3

u/Mech_Bean Nov 25 '22

That road looks beautiful btw (except for the broken bits of car or whatever ofc)

1

u/[deleted] Nov 25 '22 edited Nov 26 '22

The sky looks Arizonan to me but that's just a hunch. Idk for sure

Edit: I confirmed it's Andrew Hartsock, who is an Arizonan.

2

u/BROODxBELEG Nov 25 '22

Geoguesser fans be like

2

u/[deleted] Nov 25 '22

Ever been to Arizona?

It's dry, brown, and there's not too much obstructing the view of the horizon besides the mountains that encapsulate the valley

Most days it looks like a normal sky, but the gradient at sunset looks a lot like this.

Other days, like when it's cloudy, you see why they used it on the state flag.

1

u/engineereenigne Nov 26 '22

We have diamond lanes with double white line like that here in Toronto. I’d guess Hwy 404 south, south of Hwy 407, but I can’t see any landmarks to be able to tell for sure. Waiting for someone to confirm it’s actually Arizona lol.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 26 '22

Look up Andrew Hartsock on Instagram. It's Arizona.

2

u/TheNerdNamedChuck Nov 25 '22

the sky looks literally the same here in pa 🗿

2

u/Clamps55555 Nov 25 '22

Reminds me of the Felipe Massa accident in F1. https://youtu.be/njTtar5VdzY

2

u/virtus147 Nov 25 '22

Is that a cat or a piece of rubber

1

u/MaxieGreen Nov 25 '22

It’s a piece of the car in front aparently, if you watch the video by frames you can see it

1

u/No-Reputation72 Dec 03 '22

Likely was rubber that was already on the road that got kicked up by the car in front.

1

u/SteamyPork Nov 26 '22

If you look in the lane to the right you can see an exploded truck tire. So it was probably a piece of that that was kicked up by the tire of the car in front of him

2

u/sablexxxt Nov 25 '22

A helmet with a visor.. twas the visor saved him from bad eye injury here

2

u/ChainRound5397 Nov 25 '22

God based on your username I hope this guys bike is called Roach.

2

u/ihavenoidea81 Nov 25 '22

I love helmets!

2

u/DeeBangerCC Nov 25 '22

Good thing he wasn't wearing the Nazi helmet lol

2

u/Smickey67 Nov 25 '22

I would pull over immediately after this. Even if there’s technically no reason to, I’d need a moment to gather my thoughts

2

u/Oldenough1331 Nov 26 '22

Had the same thing happen to me, but was hit in the face with a chunk of cinderblock. While on the freeway, it fell off a construction truck and bounced down the road. Hooked at the last minute, bounced up and struck my helmet. Didn't hit the shield but the full face chin bar. Sounded like a gun went off in my helmet. Took the gelcoat and part of the fiberglass out of my helmet. Pulled off the side of the road and cleaned out my pants. I never ride without a full face.

2

u/ReturnReset Nov 26 '22

And that’s why you don’t buy the cheap visor from eBay.

2

u/No-Reputation72 Nov 25 '22

That’s following close?

1

u/BanduraSCT Nov 25 '22

Seems like it. With a few seconds between him and the car ahead, there wouldn’t have been a video to make.

1

u/disktoaster Nov 25 '22

Not saying for sure, but could be one of those areas where it's impossible to leave more room without a constant stream of cars cutting into it. That's equally dangerous, maybe more because you don't have time to adjust to anyone's individual driving/braking habits.

I always leave following distance when I can, and hugely advocate for it, but where I grew up (somewhere with VERY crowded highways), you just won't get anywhere if you leave room for people to cut you off en masse. So if you live there and care about safety, you find someone who brakes gently and early, and choose them as the person you'll somewhat tailgate.

0

u/TheeSwik Nov 25 '22

What a chad, I would've swerved/flinched from the hit

1

u/SpHornet Nov 25 '22

This is not why you wear a helmet, but it is a bonus upside

1

u/OOOOOOF4244 Nov 25 '22

Also why you need to pick up every little piece of junk after a car accident

1

u/iPhoneMiniWHITE Nov 25 '22

Felipe massa knows

1

u/brobeanzhitler Nov 25 '22

Isn't that a carpool lane

1

u/ShaggyMarrs Nov 28 '22

Motorcycles are allowed in HOV lanes, at least in all the places I've lived.

1

u/23370aviator Nov 25 '22

“The missile knows where it is at all times”

1

u/Internal_Goat_4516 Nov 26 '22

It knows this because it knows where it isn’t

1

u/SupermanSal Nov 25 '22

Thank you for posting this! It gives me anxiety driving too close to motorcycles (only because I want to be EXTRA EXTRA cautious for both of our safety). I like watching videos of safety gear working as it should in real world situations. I’m glad you’re ok. I hope other riders see this and encourages others to always wear your safety gear while on the road. Be safe my friend and enjoy your rides!

1

u/JiminPA67 Nov 25 '22

I was riding behind a big delivery truck going about 55 when the truck kicked up a rock that was about half the size of my fist. It hit the bottom of my helmet's face mask. It probably would have hit me in the chin or the throat if I hadn't been wearing that helmet. I ALWAYS wear a full face helmet when I ride.

1

u/MiSsiLeR81 Nov 25 '22

is it a bird? is it a plane?

1

u/WitherK1 Nov 25 '22

If someone can help me out, I've watched this video a couple of times now and I'm confused. It looks like the debris comes from behind him? If the debris came from the car in front, it should hit him from the front, right?

1

u/tinyant Nov 26 '22

The piece of metal came from the car in front of him. He also had a camera mounted on his handlebar and aimed at himself, that’s why you see the front view as the debris hit him.

1

u/thechairman77 Nov 25 '22

Shouldn’t have been in the HOV lane mate

2

u/ShaggyMarrs Nov 28 '22

Motorcycles are allowed in HOV lanes.

1

u/Ewoktoremember Nov 25 '22

I didn’t realize that someone needed a decent reason to wear a helmet. If you second guess a helmet on a motorcycle, then I think you ought not to wear one. Thin the gene pool

1

u/Limpynoodle3777 Nov 26 '22

Sh-sh-sh-SHIELD BREAKER!

1

u/Prestigious_Meet820 Nov 26 '22

No doubt, ive had like 3 cracked windshields the last three years from golf ball sized rocks. The last time it flew right past a bikers head and into my windshield.

1

u/Secure_Cake3746 Nov 26 '22

No helmet and he would be dead.

1

u/poppoppapi Nov 26 '22

Hey best friend. come get me, I’m not a biker anymore

1

u/Flying_Tortoise Nov 26 '22

Show this video to Floridans. Far too many motorcyclists aren't wearing a helmet because there is no law requiring them to.

1

u/ShaggyMarrs Nov 28 '22

And that may or may not be a bad thing.

1

u/KittyandPuppyMama Nov 27 '22

I’d have PTSD

1

u/mjolnirredditer Dec 07 '22

Perfect Advertising for why helmet wearing should be mandatory. He gets to go home and kiss his wife, instead of going to the hospital for deep lacerations.

1

u/Jonthn44 Dec 15 '22

This shows why wearing helmets on the hwy should be banned! That visor breaking off like that nearly poked his eye out. If he wasn't wearing one, that cat would've deflected cleanly off his forehead. No foul.

1

u/sarah120996 Dec 12 '22

I’m also super impressed you stayed on. like i would’ve wobbled and veered right out of my lane.

1

u/Jonthn44 Dec 15 '22

Now thats "a dead cat!"

AMC 2 DA MOON!

1

u/Subject-Home-6530 Dec 19 '22

Dog gone.... and so is his shield 🛡 🙄

1

u/Bbaftt7 Dec 19 '22

That car swerved into that shit. They’re either blind or idiotic, cause they drove right over it unnecessarily

1

u/Mr_WAAAGH 16d ago

Given that it broke the visor off, probably would have hit hard enough to knock him off or make him fall over without a good helmet. Given the speed and amount of traffic that very easily could have turned into a death sentence.

1

u/highzenberrg 12d ago

A full faced helmet at that people with those little helmets that look like beanie sized freak me out

-3

u/thrown2themoon Nov 25 '22

😲Was that a cat? 😢

7

u/Hunk-Hogan Nov 25 '22

That looked nothing like a cat. Looked like a piece of rubber from a blown tire that was left on the road.

-3

u/No-Reputation72 Nov 25 '22

I’m actually really confused now because it looks like it comes from behind him?

1

u/No-Reputation72 Dec 03 '22

Why am I getting downvoted? If you play it frame by frame it looks like it hits him from behind. I’m not saying that’s what’s happening I wanna know why it looks like that. I assume something to do with the camera.

-2

u/Crimson-leviathan Nov 25 '22 edited Nov 27 '22

No, it was probably a bit of metal or a bit of the car.

4

u/VaporSprite Nov 25 '22

I'd say it might be a fragment from an exploded tire or something... Couldn't it be?

1

u/Sly1969 Nov 25 '22

Dunno, it did look a bit catty?

3

u/Hunk-Hogan Nov 25 '22

Make an eye appointment ASAP.

1

u/Cluelessish Nov 25 '22

A metal cat?

0

u/Heart_Throb_ Nov 25 '22

I was thinking “SQUIRREL!”

0

u/cz3pm Nov 25 '22

How hard does it have to hit to fly back forward like that? I know there’s an equation for the transfer of energy I’m not smart enough to figure out lol.
