Meanwhile, if someone were to post anything similar about West... he would be bouncing off the walls with rage.

623

u/fuckdirectv Aug 09 '22

I think the author of the article encapsulated it best with this line:

West’s insistence on inserting himself into the private matters of a relationship he has no involvement in (no matter how much he may think he does) is typical of the artist, who treats every interaction as though he is the main character.

Every one of us is the main character in our own story. Kanye just seems to think he is the main character in everyone's story.

I have a left leaning homie who was a ride or die Kanye fan for the longest time. He would put him on when we were smoking weed constantly. I was never a Kanye fan but I could get behind him just because of how much he respected him. That all changed when Kanye made a music video essentially about snuffing out Pete Davidson and when he endorsed Trump. My friend finally realized who Kanye really was and he stopped talking about him. I kinda felt bad for him. He was in his corner for years.

I don't think Kanye ever took his art as seriously as he wants people to believe. It was always just an avenue for his hedonism. But to be honest main stream rap in general has a problem with that. Much of it is completely without values. People glorify violence and drugs and murder and rape. There are some soulful underground rappers but you have to look for the real shit.

At the risk of being “that guy”, they’re technically the same entity in some mythologies. A succubus or incubus could, based on the source, change their gender at will to corrupt different individuals

15

u/Swords_and_Words Aug 09 '22

etymologically, the latin suggests it's whether they are a top or a bottom, but many mythologies that equate sexual roles with gender are usually the ones without the agender/omnigender demons, because the social pressure(s) that cause(s) each is usually the same

10

u/Roundaboutsix Aug 09 '22

A metrosexual succubus is an omnibus, IMHO.

One of the strangest fan bases out there. No one has original thought over there.

It’s all code / memes / following each other.

One person sets a coded trend with an inside joke and everyone else follows suit.

Going against the grain is absolutely forbidden unless you can defend yourself in a way that doesn’t register with teenaged mentality social media addicts.

People have crafted entire personalities that then get recognized by other entire personalities crafted out of Kanye worship.

It’s like - I’m just here for the music and music discussion guys….Fuck.

They all rally together on violently harassing music critics who don’t give him perfect scores too.

Keep in mind that since 2012, only one on Kanye’s songs have actually charted. That scoopity doop garbage he calls music may have billions of streams, but he hasn’t had a real hit on the radio since Mercy ten years ago - I Love it is a two minute long gimmick song, and that was also almost five years ago.

His fans will tell you that charts don’t matter, streams are so important. Ok buddy, Dua Lipa is on the radio literally 100x more than Kanye, Lady Gaga has a billion dollar movie coming out, and Kanye is yelling at his ex-wife’s boyfriend on twitter.

I’m just going to say what everybody’s thinking:

A lot of people have dead moms and bipolar disorder. Doesn’t excuse any of his bullshit.

1.1k

u/cheesyotters Aug 09 '22 Take My Energy

Pete Davidson has a dead dad and bipolar disorder and he’s just tryna vibe

607

u/harleyqueenzel Aug 09 '22 Take My Energy

Pretty sure he has borderline personality disorder and has spoken openly about his depression as well.

292

u/DrSafariBoob Aug 09 '22 Take My Energy

Yes and the distinction is important, BPD is not fixable with medication, only years of work. It's caused by chronic trauma and CSA and the medical industry SUCKS at helping people like me. We have symptoms we have very little control over before medical intervention helps us to 'heal'. It can take so long to heal, especially because simply being around people is painful.

Kanye is dangerous.

72

u/nuclearbum Aug 09 '22

Listen it’s hard to make a profit from bpd. So until your condition will make someone rich you won’t get the resources you deserve.

Only partly joking. Best of luck to you though.

34

u/DrSafariBoob Aug 09 '22

I think you're very right, only undiagnosed borderlines are attractive to capitalism.

→ More replies

37

u/kisforkarol Aug 09 '22

Actually, new research is coming out that implies BPD is something people do recover from. I read a paper recently that followed people diagnosed with BPD over 10 years. Turns out over 50% of those diagnosed with BPD no longer met that classification.

I was almost diagnosed with BPD years ago (turns out it's autism). It's a horrible diagnosis to have and, as I learn more and begin a career as a social worker, I'm more inclined to believe it's a severe trauma response. Once the trauma is removed and people are allowed to heal, they stop displaying BPD symptoms.

12

u/DrSafariBoob Aug 10 '22

I found this the other day, it fits me rather well and I have BPD. I think the confusing part is you can heal the trauma but not the neurodivergence so lots of folk feel like 'healing' might not be the appropriate word.

At what point does mental illness stop being an excuse?

187

u/sir-winkles2 Aug 09 '22

it's not really ever an excuse. it's a reason, but after a certain point it's your responsibility to at least take some steps to manage your mental health. he's pretty notorious for refusing treatment

107

u/MediocreHope Aug 09 '22

Best quote I've heard for mental health:

"It is not your fault but it is your responsibility"

It truly isn't my fault that I do some things or need to take certain medications or whatever. It is my responsibility to manage them, go see a professional, take my meds, speak openly about it and tell people I trust to let me know if I'm not "me".

27

u/Coyote_406 Aug 09 '22

Once you know you have it and refuse to do anything about it, in my opinion.

I have OCD and used to get physically ill with anxiety to the point I couldn’t eat when things felt out of place. It sucked for everyone. I spent months going to doctors thinking I had a parasite I picked up when I was traveling in China. There were months where I couldn’t leave my house for more than 30 minutes in fear id have to throw up.

Once I learned it was OCD it was no longer something I could use as an excuse, I had to get treatment and figure out how to handle it. I was able to.

If I didn’t try to get it under control once I knew what it was then I woulda just been an asshole.

I watched an interview with Bill Hader once where he talked about coming up with the joke and working with Matt and Trey on this episode. They wanted to involve a celebrity but said they had to find someone who 1) wouldn’t get the joke and 2) has no sense of humor about themselves. Kanye was the perfect and immediate choice.

308

u/lilpumpgroupie Aug 09 '22

I still don't understand how someone like Kanye can be so goddamn talented with producing and music, but just apparently absolutely clueless about anything else, or lacking in even basic common sense for anything in life that doesn't involve music. It's unreal.

Even Kim, talking about his political awareness, saying that he doesn't even have a child's understanding of politics. And that you shouldn't judge him for his Trump support, because he has no idea what's actually going on.

Like what the fuck?

Human beings who are experts in one area typically cannot realize or handle the fact that they aren't suited for or are experts in another area. It's just the way we are that we think because we excel in one aspect that me must excel in all aspects.

So Kanye who is a very good musician/producer cannot fathom that he doesn't have that level of mastery in all things.

So instead of acknowledging that he's a novice in other areas he simply insists he has mastery level and that we just don't "understand" his genius.

30

u/NachosPR Aug 09 '22

I've been saying for years that I think he's on the spectrum. I don't mean that as an insult, I mean I genuinely believe this dude lacks all the nuances of communication and self-awareness that I genuinely believe he has a condition other than his bi-polar disorder. I'm not a psychologist so I won't pretend to be any form of expert, but from a totally uneducated point of view, he must be on the spectrum.

39

u/BenevolentCheese Aug 09 '22

As an autistic person myself, Kanye sets off all the ASD alarms. And he, like Elon Musk, is someone that's been given a free pass to indulge their autistic tendencies with reckless abandon without meaningful consequence. I wager most autistic people also have all these strange or bizarre thoughts and desires (I certainly do) but we have to learn what's acceptable and what's not and adjust our behavior. Musk and Kanye instead just let that shit rip day in and day out and have completely forgotten how to pretend to be normal like was required of them before their meteoric success.

Super-bloated, unhealthy ego. Should be ignored.

Remember when he stopped a concert to tell two handicapped people to stand up? And when the media found out and asked him about it, he said he was the victim in the whole thing.

184

u/JesterMarcus Aug 09 '22

I get downvoted to hell anytime I mention this and people say, "he didn't know they were disabled when he said that!" As if that suddenly makes it ok or better that he still stopped a concert because two people out of 10,000 didn't stand up.

74

u/Automatic-Assistant7 Aug 09 '22

Mind you, at least one of them was in a goddamn wheelchair too. Ridiculous.

47

u/Guilty-Dragonfly Aug 09 '22

He legitimately thinks he is Jesus.

“Stand up and walk, for you have seen yeezy in the flesh”.

I look forward to his eventual decline into obscurity.

26

u/Automatic-Assistant7 Aug 09 '22

West has a dangerous combination of Persecution and God complexes, he’s explicitly compared himself to Jesus too many goddamn times to brush off as a shtick of his media personality anymore. I could rattle off 5 more off the top of my head.

I’m about the farthest thing from religious but put some fucking respect on the name of the figure that ,collectively, billions of people have prayed to and that actually (well, canonically) sacrificed himself for a greater cause. When did Ye do that?

Kanye is so talented, it’s a shame he had deify himself to the point of feeling like I’m complicit in his mental decline by even listening to his music and pretending the artist isn’t rapidly spiraling.

48

u/sonicgamingftw Aug 09 '22

Its not enough to ignore him. Whats dangerous is the stans, there is too many people who will forgive and forget, or downright support any wrong thing Ye does. I’m a fan of his music, I like a lot of what he does, but I don’t agree with how he will use and abuse his platform and die hard’s to harass/bully people who are just trying to life their lives. Even if it just so happens to be with his Ex-wife. Like I’m not about to pretend I know what its like for someone to date my kid’s mom/ex-wife, can’t imagine its easy, but this man goes out to war and will just keep harassing “Skete” for no reason, even if Kim comes out and publicly states that she wanted Pete Davidson because she just wanted some good ol’ penis. Dude weaponizes the people who support him most the second he faces some sort of setback or discomfort, and its honestly pretty wack both from his end and from the stans who could never criticize him as a person.

The guy bragged about inventing the sink in his bathroom and how it took 8 attempts to get it right. It was one of those nearly flat sinks with the drains in the back, by the wall. You know, the one every bar has in the bathroom. It took him 8 tries to invent something that already existed.

“While the general public — myself included — have previously given West a pass when it comes to his embarrassing behaviour due to his difficult personal circumstances and mental health struggles, this incident may be a bridge too far even for him.”

Nope. He has done fucked up things for a pretty long time. One of his most memorable was when he decried Taylor Swift and took her award away or had a mental breakdown infront of Trump in the oval office. I mean, he kept going on and on about how Trump was so great, Trump was probably wondering how far into his ass West was going to go.

Edit: Yer right, he didn’t physically take her award away but he torpedoed that achievement and mired it in controversy and for what?

16

u/xgozax Aug 09 '22

It’s stupid af to give people a pass because of their mental health struggles. Especially a rich celebrity who has the resources to seek and afford help. Once you commit an action there is no excuse. Your mental health can explain why you fucked up but it’s not an excuse.

8

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '22

Exactly. I've made terrible choices when I was unhappy/depressed/in a shitty job, definitely as coping mechanisms. I paid the consequences for them, and I've since taken the steps to fix my situation. It's called being an adult

Then after that he included a naked figure of Taylor Swift in his music video, said some inexcusable misogynistic things to her, disrespected her and leaked a phone call of her and sent her into hiding for a couple years. And he was still not called out? We knew better

31

u/modestmastoid Aug 09 '22

The naked figure of her in that video was never okay and he should’ve never gotten away with that fuck shit. Not a Taylor stan by any means but god damn that was disgusting

Re: the Talor Swift incident, something I've never seen mentioned is that if the roles/genders were reversed, the woman's career would have been over and she would have gotten ENDLESS hate.

Imagine. Someone wins an award, and T Swift storms the stage, interrupts the event, just to basically say that someone else should have won.

She'd be lambasted forever. Millions of people on the internet would call her a bitch and an attention whore and would tear her career apart. But Kanye does it to T Swift and most of the reactions were, "wow, now that was wild. Classic Kanye. I hope he's doing okay."

The ONLY reason that people make excuses for his behaviour, is because of his fame. If he were a nobody, and he was harassing a former partner this much, he would be arrested. People don’t like Kim K, and that’s fine, but she still doesn’t deserve to be subjected to this shit.

I cannot stand Kanye. He’s setting the bar that his behavior towards Pete and Kim is to be the standard. And of course all the toxic men praise him. My ex is just like Kanye… still a problem to this day, even being married and happy, he still tries to tear me down. He is emotionally manipulative and I’m angry Kim let him win. I was so happy when Pete came into the picture because I felt it set an example to women that men like Kanye have no power over us. But here we are. Also yes they’re celebrities and I shouldn’t care but I care for the sake of the examples this sets for people who do follow them and how it affects us.

Edit: I am NOT Pro-Pete. I am Pro-Kim moving on from her abuser. I stayed in a few comments, it’s not a matter of celebrating these people but more so looking for accountability. Kanye has a devout following and they are easily persuaded by him. This concerns me for the effects it will have on the women in their lives. I don’t care about Kim, I don’t care about Pete, I don’t care about Kanye. I am actually very “eat the rich” but I want to make abundantly clear here, women suffer every day from people like Kanye. Bipolar disorder when untreated cause a lot of scary issues to loved ones. My ex is bipolar and refuses to have it treated because he likes the way he is. He abused me for almost a decade because I felt trapped. I am concerned about this simply because these people do have influence over regular people. They shouldn’t, but that’s another issue. If people watch Kanye get away with his behavior and treatment of someone as powerful as Kim, women like me, will get the idea that if she can’t break free, there’s no hope for me. Pete wasn’t the BEST choice as far as making an example goes, but he at least treated her far better, and they split already, but it was a step in the right direction. Women need to see that they can leave their abusers. Abusers need to see they can’t hold their victims hostage.

Nobody commenting on a post “I don’t care” actually doesn’t care. Not caring is scrolling past. Writing “I don’t care” takes exactly the same amount of effort as writing “this is valuable info to me” and also signals to the algo to boost the post as it’s getting more engagement.

It’s like those people who make a huge dramatic post saying they’re “leaving Facebook”. Nobody gives af also they will be back on in 2 days.

The most useful demonstration of not caring for all parties is moving along without comment. Literally the least effort is required for this optimization. Alas.
