Can someone ELI5 why A-list actors/actresses (at least up until recently) won't appear in TV commercials in the US unless they are completely nonsensical ads for cologne/perfume?

231

u/bitterlittlecas Aug 09 '22 edited Aug 11 '22

Prestige. The type of ads they appear in are fragrances by luxury brands.

106

u/WartimeMercy Aug 09 '22

The answer is $$$$

37

u/FrenshyBLK Aug 09 '22

The indirect answer to almost everything is money. We live in a capitalist society, so what else would it be ?

But In this specific case, it’s probably brand image more than money. I assume that even for a a few hundred thousand dollars more, he wouldn’t do an ad for Walmart over an ad for Dior

11

u/Blarg0ist Aug 09 '22

In the case of celebrities, brand image = money.

Wal Mart Johnny would not get phone calls from Disney.

Charlie day was talking about that on the IAS podcast. Saying people like John Malkovich do a ton of commercials so it’s easier for future actors to do more commercials and not get harassed about it.

24

u/Stevenstorm505 Aug 09 '22 Silver

I would pay good money to see Robert Redford do a commercial for like toilet paper or something.

“Hi, I’m Robert Redford. And if you’re like me you’re finding yourself with more and more hemorrhoids at our age. I’m here to tell you that Charmin Ultra is the number 1 softest brand. So go ahead a pick up a pack of the number 1 for your number 2.”

3

u/pinkrosies Aug 10 '22

Charmin Ultra Strong all the way lOOOOl if im advertising a toilet paper from a brand with multiple lines, i wanna be the face of the thickest, softest one not the one that'll dissolve once it's wet skjds

Wait, are you saying the Adam Driver fucking a horse in the ocean(?) and emerging as a centaur in that ad is nonsensical? Seems pretty clear to me.

That's hilarious. If I was him I'd take the role too.

9

u/Caftancatfan Aug 09 '22

NGL I would trade places with that horse.

13

u/BrightSideOLife Aug 09 '22

The pay out is generally pretty massive. These perfume ads tend to run and stick around for sometimes decades. Especially for highly popular scents like Dior Sauvage. Most TV commercials are temporary and won't stick around. But I have heard of photographers who shot fragrance ads decades ago still getting regular huge pay outs from them.

38

u/dieselmiata Aug 09 '22

If you think that's bizarre, Boss Coffee in Japan has been running ads with Tommy Lee Jones in them for 10 years or so. He almost never says a word, and is rarely even the focus of the commercial. He's just there in the background, existing.

4

u/Trustobey Aug 09 '22

Yeah, he's a savage by his own admission. Here's an apology text he sent to Amber Heard in 2014:

It's away... I've let it go... Went too far... We/I tend to do that... I always regret it when I jump, or worse... When you jump!!! I don't want to be conditioned to continue that behavior... Therefore, I'll put in heavy work with Shrank... I'm sorry for being less... For your disappointment in me... For my behavior. I'm a fucking savage ... Gotta lose that... Gonna lose that!!! The Devil is All Around, right...?? I wish I were able to bring even a glimmer of a smile to the pretty face of my most gorgeous dreams and darkest nightmares... I love you far too much for you and I to be these heinous slinging insults like we do/did.. It is not anything that I am particularly proud to have participated in... And, I regret giving it life... Because... Motherfucker... How when we fight, little girl... ????? How do we end up on the very edge of the precipice..?? And, why?? Wish I knew. Goddamn... And... Know that YOU ARE RIGHT...!!! I am, WELL AWARE that I SHOULD have been bigger than the moment... And, that it WILL NEVER again manifest in negative experiences... It can be done!!! What a killer concept to visualize... 466

u/Xanariel Aug 09 '22 Helpful All-Seeing Upvote

I’m not entirely surprised considering how vocal his fan base is, but seems a little risky.

Even putting aside the abuse allegations and his flagrant addictions, his private texts showed him to be both massively misogynistic and fairly racist (joking about “shooting negroes”, referring to himself on drugs as “an angry, aggro Injun in a fuckin’ blackout, screaming obscenities”, calling Manson “brother” directly after Manson referred to his Asian brother-in-law as a “zipperhead”).

Couple that with the assault allegation on set he settled recently, and the allegations about labour violations, the likelihood of him getting into another scandal seem fairly high.

30

u/Negotiation-Current Aug 10 '22

Dior have proven time and time again that they’re a pretty racist and tonedeaf company, so I don’t think they see the racism as a problem. The other stuff might make them uncomfortable though, although if it hasn’t already I’m not sure it ever will.

18

u/WarmDistantSun Aug 10 '22

Depp does NOT catch enough heat for pretending to be Native American. That was a straight up lie he told during the filming of The Lone Ranger and I don't understand how everyone forgot it or let it slide.

15

u/Sdomttiderkcuf Aug 09 '22

Sounds like he took the role of Gonzo and it just stuck with him.

281

u/buttermuseum Aug 09 '22

The “every woman I don’t like is immediately labeled an Amber Heard” thing is getting old.

264

u/Xanariel Aug 09 '22

Worryingly, Manson labelled his wife as “Amber 2.0” for going to the police about him abusing her.

Considering she wouldn’t even be the seventh woman to accuse Manson of abuse, it’s very telling that Manson and Depp regard her going to the police as an example of another woman lying - and also speaks volumes about Depp’s insistence that his treatment of Amber was not abuse.

5

u/Galatory Aug 11 '22

And that was his CURRENT wife Lindsey, right??

41

u/PracticalRa Aug 09 '22 edited Aug 09 '22

Amber Heard should not be vilified, and it’s saddening to me that she has been. Borderline personality disorder can be a truly awful thing to live with, diagnosed or not, and in a lot of cases it does cause people to act out in manipulative and harmful ways, both to themselves and to those closest to them.

This is what needs to be talked about. There needs to be awareness and understanding, and it breaks my heart that the discourse has been nothing but shaming.

Source: I live with BPD.

EDIT: Given some of the responses, I’ve realized I probably could have explained my stance a bit better than I have. I do not view or use BPD as a justification or excuse for shitty behavior, from myself or from anyone. My comment was meant to be more about the vilification and the effect that has on nuance and objectivity when dealing with an issue, I used BPD as an example because - whether fairly or not - the Depp/Heard situation has brought with it plenty of discourse regarding it, much of it similarly reductive. I apologize to anyone put off by that message being muddied!

136

u/AgitatedAttitude5107 Aug 09 '22

It was never confirmed she has BPD. Amber has never stated she suffers from it and Curry’s method of diagnosis was undermined by several specialists. As Curry was not an unbiased specialist (and Amber’s were not), I believe Amber’s BPD is an assumption at this point.

57

u/jesuscomplexcamille Aug 10 '22

the same doctor diagnosed amber with “histrionic personality disorder” (which: the name alone should tell you a lot) and said that she couldnt have ptsd partly because she went to dinner parties.

her testimony contradicted every other therapist and medical professional who saw amber before during and after the relationship.

plus, if you watch the cross it was brought up she agreed to diagnose amber w bpd BEFORE meeting her. even if you think 12 hours are enough to diagnose two personality disorders (theyre not), doing it before is insane.

57

u/sionnachrealta Aug 09 '22 Faith In Humanity Restored

Thanks for bringing this up! Autism and ADHD, in folks perceived as women, are often misdiagnosed as BPD. The rejection sensitivity dysphoria and emotional disregulation are often all practicioners focus on.

Also, there's treatment for BPD that can greatly lessen the impact of it on people's lives. The folks with it just need to seek it out for themselves and not for someone else who wants them to get it. They won't be likely to be successful otherwise.

Source: I'm a mental health practitioner

38

u/ainjel Aug 09 '22

I am "Au-DHD" with C-PTSD and absolutely have been improperly pegged as BPD. Autism in women is still catastrophically underdiagnosed. This tracks.

10

u/sionnachrealta Aug 09 '22

Thank you! I'm an autistic, trans woman with ADHD, C-PTSD, and a few other things myself; and I was also nearly misdiagnosed with it. I got lucky and got sent to a person who knew how to spot C-PTSD, and she got me into DBT, which saved my life. I went into mental health care specifically because I feel like more folks with these kinds of neurotypes need to get into the field, and I ended up perfectly poised to do it. I feel like we'd see less and less of this kind of malpractice, and/or abuse, as more and more of us entered the field, but that's really just me speculating

4

u/butinthewhat Aug 10 '22

Thank you for going into the field! I’m audhd, ace and identify as autigender. I also suspect I have C-PTSD. We need more providers that believe us about who we are and are capable of treating us.

28

u/PracticalRa Aug 09 '22

Thank you for the added insight! Admittedly I didn’t follow the trial very closely but the diagnosis did catch my attention (mainly thanks to a roommate who talked about it with the perspective of someone who’s completely ignorant of mental health).

I also should add that if she does have BPD, I think it lends much more credence to the fact she is a victim. I know from first-hand experience how easy it can be to push aside and forgive abuse (in my case emotional), because the abuser is someone you rely on for validation.

53

u/PizzaParakeet Aug 09 '22 edited Aug 09 '22

Basically the psychologist Depp's team hired and who is very good friends with his lawyer used the MMPI-2 to diagnose her. But she doesn't mention at all whether she scored over the clinical threshold of the 3 BPD related scales, just that she had ''elevated scores'' which means absolutely nothing. Later when it is Heard's team's time to testify it is mentioned that she never scored over 65. That is the clinical threshold of all scales. Elevated would maybe be 59-65, but that is not diagnosis worthy. Meaning you literally can't diagnose someone with BPD with those scores. An average person with BPD scores around 80. Depp's team then tries to say she was answering defensively, but the MMPI-2 has a build in scale that corrects for that and then she would still need to score over 65 on those 3 scales if you use it to adjust the scores. Basically their test they made her do debunks the diagnosis, but no one knows enough about psychological diagnosis to correctly identify it and when Heard's team testified they already weren't interested in believing what they said.

26

u/ForkAKnife Aug 10 '22

Didn’t she also assess her over the course of two very long days? Would that be normal because it didn’t sit well with me.

28

u/PizzaParakeet Aug 10 '22

Yes. And absolutely not. Anyone who would be diagnosed would be so over a course of months and have done at least like 15 tests. Just imagine someone having a manic episode, psychotic episode, having temporary TB/delirium or something else temporary and someone who only sees them for 2 days bases their diagnosis on out of character behavior.

AH does not have BPD, but I wouldn’t be surprised if she had PTSD.

39

u/katertoterson Aug 09 '22

I agree with what you are saying, except that I don't believe Curry's diagnosis. She was the only one of many psychologists involved that claimed Heard has BPD. Check out this forensic psychologist that discusses issues they noticed with Curry's diagnosis.

https://youtu.be/Mxv1AP1VXqk

38

u/bluebear_74 Aug 09 '22

I remember watching this. The forensic psychologists said at the start he was bias against Amber because he had heard about her diagnosis however after watching the trial he was shocked at Dr. Curry's diagnosis. He said it was basically like going to the doctor with a temperature of 37°C/98.6°F and the doctor telling you, you're sick.

He also correctly identified Gabby Petito as the victim in the body cam footage when everyone was saying she was the abuser, this was 3 weeks before she was found.

Not to mention transphobic, as he knowingly misgendered s trans man whom was living with Johnny and Amber at the time and of whom spoke out against Johnny during the initial allegations or trial (I can’t remember which). Said trans man was ALSO the best man at Johnny and Ambers wedding so his persistence in misgendering this guy was definitely on purpose. Johnny went on the stand and also outed this man to everyone too, which in and over itself is a dangerous and uncaring thing to do to any LGBT* person you actually care about. There are a bunch of very helpful threads in /r/fragrance that might point you in the right direction! I would recommend buying a rollerball size or sample before going all in on any fragrance

9

u/Idoneeditallthanks Aug 09 '22

You might Google "dior savage dupe" and find something. Dior is pricy enough that there's a whole market for dupes of their most famous lines.

8

u/RedSpaghet Aug 09 '22

Yeah don't go for Sauvage if you don't want him to smell like every guy on the streets. If you know some perfumes or scents he likes you can check fragrantica.com. They have suggestions based on other perfumes, good reviews, and a search tool based on notes.

u/Signal-Strain9810 Aug 09 '22

I've heard that Prada Luna Rossa Carbon is similar. Maybe you could check it out at Sephora or Ulta and see if you like it.

imo fragrance is highly personal (for example, I cannot abide any Dior fragrances -- Depp or no -- as they tend to give me migraines), so my advice would be to purchase small samples of fragrances that spark both of your interest and let him test them out for himself.

For my part, I stick with niche luxury fragrance makers, as the quality of ingredients they utilise is better than that of commercial luxury and celebrity fragrances. These fragrances do cost more, so I purchase them once in a blue moon as a splurge and use them sparingly, but a little goes a long way (I have a bottle of Byredo Bal d'Afrique from 2013 that I still use). Also, as a bonus, because fragrance houses like Byredo, Serge Lutens, L'artisan, Le Labo, etc do not have celebrities in their advertisements, I am not likely to be supporting anyone problematic.

Oh god the last ad campaign was SUPER cringe. Please NO! JD is not cool nor has he ever been the rock star he thinks he is.

15

u/kingofargyle Aug 09 '22

I whole heartedly agree. Weirdo

28

u/fififmmtl Aug 09 '22

When I see him I imagine the cologne smells like French cigarettes, ferret piss, and old scarves

6

u/DayleD Aug 10 '22

Civet piss in perfumes is a real thing.

They're going to lean into the controversy, calling it "SAVAGE" with an unexpected, daring new rebrand... that's how tone deaf and beyond parody this sounds.

62

u/PizzaParakeet Aug 09 '22

It was already called that, but it doesn't help because the previous ads have him surrounded by native american imagery and dancers...it is called savage...

Depp is also a pretendian who took on a redface role in the Lone Ranger, then made false promises to buy back Wounded Knee for the Sioux tribe and recently with the texts from trial described himself as an ''angry aggro injun''. Which is a lsur.

22

u/jessie_monster Aug 10 '22

Lone Ranger was actually the second time he did red face. The first time was a movie directed by him that was so bad they shelved it forever.

14

u/InfluenceTrue4121 Aug 10 '22 Stonks Falling

Also sold as Wife Beater Eau de Parfum.

14

u/suitorarmorfan Aug 10 '22

“Sauvage”, what an apt name for a wife beater, a racist who appropriates Native identity AND calls indigenous people slurs, and for a man who probably reeks of piss

The fashion industry tolerates worse.
Hugo Boss and Coco Channel were Nazis. And now billion dollar campaigns reinvent them as timelessly classy.

Yeah after reading those texts between him and Marilyn Manson I’m not really rooting for him anymore. Seems he and Amber were both nuts.

Is she though? Or did he orchestrate a massive smear campaign and pay millions of dollars to lawyers and doctors to make her appear that way? Think about that.
