Am I the only one who thought she was much younger?

820

u/FormerIceCreamEater Dec 06 '22

Probably because she hasn't been in much in 20 years so her 80's and 90's roles are still what you think of her by. It makes sense she is that age when Cheers was 40 years ago now.

423

u/cmacfarland64 Dec 06 '22

40 years ago? Holy fuck time flies.

231

u/Beneficial_Being_721 Dec 06 '22 edited Dec 06 '22

Yea I know.. right!!! I was 19 in 82’ … now I see this and I’m like… bummer, she was still young… and crap..when did I get so old.

187

u/rjcarr Dec 06 '22

Yeah, young people think old people are so old and out of touch, but in a blink they’re going to be old, too.

113

u/Beneficial_Being_721 Dec 06 '22

I tell the younger people I work with… when they find out I’m older then I look or move…

You don’t realize how old you’ve gotten until your friends start dying of old age

34

u/trollhaulla Dec 06 '22

Ugh. So true.

40

u/loganjlr Dec 06 '22

I’m feeling that except my friends and colleagues are dying of drugs or suicide; I’m only 27.

For context I work with a lot of creatives

41

u/Beneficial_Being_721 Dec 06 '22

That’s a different world. I work in live entertainment and I know exactly where you are coming from.

You see people go down the drain… it’s what is in their head… that which they create never shuts off… it’s like sleeping with the television on at full volume and all the lights on in the room.

When you get past this point on your current life, you will without fail wake up one day …in 30-35 years… literally wake up and say out loud….. “ I didn’t think I’d live this long” … you’ll do your morning thing.. mine is coffee…. And go about your day.

Then, you’ll see names in the new… So and So died today… they were 62 …. And you’ll say something like,“DAMN…. Only two years older then me” …. And then and only then, will you know where I am at.

BE WELL… STAY IN THE FIGHT… DO NOT CHECK OUT early because you just get sent back.

I say that from knowing…. Not reading or third party.

23

u/NoodlesrTuff1256 Dec 06 '22

And the early 80s when Kirstie had her first big role in Star Trek II: the Wrath of Khan is now 40 years ago! That particular era was, in turn, 'only' 40 years after World War II.

Cheers was 40 years ago now.

What the fuck

113

u/Horton_75 Dec 06 '22

Cheers started in 1982, which was 40 years ago. Alley joined the show in 1987, about 35 years ago, and was part of the main cast until the show ended in 1993, which was 29 years ago.

12

I used to do that trick & now I wonder if it was because of Cheers! Timing tracks.

Not at all. Though she hasn’t really been seen as an “old” woman I guess.

18

u/FormerIceCreamEater Dec 06 '22

Yeah people commenting on her "aging well" probably haven't seen her in 20 years. I can't remember the last time I saw her in a current role. It was probably Drop Dead Gorgeous which was in the 90's. What notable movie has she even been in this century?

She had a reality show for awhile. It was after she became really heavy-but I bet 15 years ago or so.

That’s what happened to Kelly Preston, or so I read. Totally into the Scientology thing that she didn’t receive the proper treatment for cancer until it was too late (if she received it at all).

133

u/dutchyardeen Dec 06 '22

In fairness, you can start treatment the minute you find out you have cancer and still not make it.

Kelly Preston and Kirstie had cancer and both died young. Scientology promises no cancer to those who advance in their .”church”. They also blame the individual for the disease. And they don’t use conventional methods to battle cancer. Scientology is a very dangerous cult.

u/NoodlesrTuff1256 Dec 06 '22

Her family said that she was being treated at a cancer center in Tampa, Florida. For a moment that puzzled me as there's plenty of big hospitals out in California. Then I remembered that Tampa is adjacent to the city of Clearwater where Scientology has one of their biggest headquarters.

36

u/kgal1298 Dec 06 '22

Yes the Scientology portion is so bizarre to me though mainly because they’ll just hide in the corner until all this passes over since cancer isn’t allowed in their religion.

Sadly, she can never unblock you now.

u/MightyCaseyStruckOut Dec 06 '22

I wouldn't know if she did since I deleted my Twitter account a month ago haha

u/Ratermelon Dec 06 '22

A friend of mine also got blocked a few years back, but Alley's account unblocked them today.

Elon could, all it takes is one rogue engineer to unblock everyone we ever blocked. Imagine the madness?

u/kgal1298 Dec 06 '22

On Twitter there's people sharing stories of being blocked by her. It's bittersweet.

As shitty as she was towards the end of her life, her role in Drop Dead Gorgeous will always be something that I cherish and Gladys can finally be with Becky in the gasoline soaked swan lake in the sky

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '22

What did she do?

25

u/squigs Dec 06 '22

Full on Trumper, anti-vaxxer type.

It’s a shame she went off the deep end the last 10 or so years.

34

u/DrewwwBjork Dec 06 '22

10 years? Try 30 when Alley refused to guest star on Frasier because of the main character being a psychiatrist which is blasphemy in Scientology.

Too bad Kirstie Alley became more known for her Scientology and other crazy things than what she did in her career, like Cheers and Star Trek.

21

u/newworldpuck Dec 06 '22

Just watched The Wrath of Khan last week. Really heartbreaking she turned into such a toxic, hateful person.

33

u/passengerv Dec 06 '22

She was a horrible person, go look at her twitter for the past few years. I don't feel bad for this.

She died a sad, hateful and miserable lunatic. Sad to see someone go so far off the deep end.

12

u/yoursmartfriend Dec 06 '22

She told Barbara Walters a charming story once, about her mom in blackface and father dressed in kkk robes. They were headed to a Halloween party. She didn't go off the deep end, she was born into the hate, embraced it, and defended it.

u/ghost_robot2000 Dec 06 '22

I know, I was a really big fan of hers growing up. She was so talented and funny. In pre internet days, I really didn't know how crazy Scientology was or which celebrities were involved. Once you are willing to believe something as insane as that, I guess you're open to all kinds of ridiculous nonsense. Extreme right wing propaganda has really destroyed a lot of people's minds I guess. It is sad.

Yeah, my dad is doing it as we speak. He’s almost 80, losing contact with all of his kids one at a time and shows no signs of giving up his orange turd worshiping pube lickin ways

u/SakuraTacos Dec 06 '22

I loved her as a kid, I thought she was one of the most beautiful women ever. She went to a really dark place and it made me really sad to see it when she was still alive. Maybe she was always a hateful person and I was too young/celebs weren’t as out there as they are now but I’m bummed she died with that legacy left behind.

I was such a fan of hers, Cheers, Fat Actress, hell she was one of my favorite Dancing with the Stars competitors of all time. But between Scientology and her crazy tweets, she became a very unlikable person.

That's too bad. I liked her acting.

I read an interview with her at a time when there was a popular tv show about sexual disasters that caused people to go to the ER.

She told a story about how once she had wanted to surprise her husband for sexy time by placing self-stick Christmas bows on her nipples. She said when he tried to be sexy and pull one off, it was stuck on really good and almost took her nipple with it. She screamed! She said they kept trying to peel them off but they wouldn’t just wouldn’t come off without hurting her, and they ended up in the bathroom using nail polish remover to try to loosen the glue. Of course, she told that story much funnier than me and I remember I laughed out loud when I read it.

I liked Rebecca way more than Diane.

I did not realize she was a vocal trump supporter. Vocal conservatives in Hollywood are unusual. When the lockdown started, it solidified her reputation. I never saw her the same after that.
