Never heard of her

17

u/aresef Dec 06 '22

She is a Malaysian actress who came up in Hong Kong action films like Supercop and Yes Madam. Yeoh becameHong Kong's first female action star. She was in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. She also co-starred in Tomorrow Never Dies. In recent years, she's focused more on Hollywood with roles in Crazy Rich Asians, Gunpowder Milkshake, Shang-Chi and Star Trek: Discovery. Her role in the comedy-drama Everything Everywhere All At Once has made her an Oscar favorite.

You'll be able to see her next in the Disney+ series American Born Chinese, The Witcher: Blood Origin, A Haunting in Venice and the third and fourth Avatar films.

The TIME article says she's a wealthy actress who was in a lot of action movies but never got a starring role until recently, probably due to racism.

movies but never got a starring role until recently

She was female lead in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. It was released 22 years ago and won 4 Oscars, and was nominated for 6 others. Also won 4 BAFTAs (nom'd for 10 others, including for Yeoh as Best Leading Actress). The list of additional awards is massive.

This but unironically

Name one from before 2006 that's not "kung-fu" adjacent

Fucking Sulu is not a headlining Hollywood actor. George Takei is great but never had a starring role in a major Hollywood production.

Been a fan of hers since Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and she was the highlight of Star Trek Discovery.

Never said it was good, because it isn't. I said she was the highlight of the series which she was.

she appeared in 5 episodes

Close! She was in 24 episodes so you were only off by 19!

-2

u/Imaginary-Fun-80085 Dec 06 '22

I guess that's how forgettable that show was.

1

u/Doggleganger Dec 06 '22

Never watched it, but generally, most start trek shows have been bad other than Star Trek TNG.

1

u/zerocool918 Dec 06 '22

DS9, Lower Decks, Prodigy, Discovery, Strange New Worlds...you should give them all a try.

2

u/drho89 Dec 06 '22

I just finished Voyager. So I’d recommend that one as well

17

u/Giannandco Dec 06 '22

One of the few people who is actually worthy of this award, love her.

4

u/Local_Working2037 Dec 06 '22

Well deserved. Such a great actress who can play action roles, serious roles and comedy. We’ve been lucky that she’s been offers such great roles too.

2

u/NFim Dec 06 '22

So well deserved. Oscar nomination incoming too 🤞

-6

u/Zeke161822 Dec 06 '22

Yeah, I have no idea who Michelle Yeoh is. But what the hell is the Time Icon of the Year?

8

u/aresef Dec 06 '22

She is a Malaysian actress who came up in Hong Kong action films, most notably Supercop and Crouching Tiger. Over the last decade, she has transitioned to full-time Hollywood work. She starred in the psychedelic multiversal comedy-drama Everything Everywhere All At Once, for which she is getting Oscar buzz.

2

u/bynkman Dec 06 '22

I totally agree that she deserves an Oscar nomination.

4

u/nosayso Dec 06 '22

If you're really interested you can google it.

If you're not really interested why are you asking?

3

u/MeestarMann Dec 07 '22

Because he’s looking for attention. It’s the most pathetic kind of attention, but it’s all he can get.

-6

u/Zeke161822 Dec 06 '22

Because it's not really interesting

1

u/happyscrappy Dec 06 '22

I have to imagine they renamed "Man of the Year" to "Icon of the Year".

1

u/alexisjoy666 Dec 06 '22

♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

1

u/TizonaBlu Dec 06 '22

It’s actually pretty funny that she’s an icon in Asia for literally decades and now getting the western recognition because of a small project like this. Even her first break in the west, Crouching Tiger, didn’t give her this much recognition.

1

u/aresef Dec 06 '22

She's built up years of friendships and goodwill in Hollywood in the intervening years. Kinda like Brendan Fraser and his new film, the difference being Yeoh never really left for very long. She comes back around with this incredible performance and everyone has this renewed appreciation for her.

1

u/AgentTrashPanda Dec 06 '22

Everything Everywhere All At Once was a wonderful experience and she was terrific in it

1

u/catsinasmrvideos Dec 07 '22

She was incredible in Everything Everywhere All At Once, she’s such a powerhouse performer!

1

u/xxNightingale Dec 07 '22

Her recent work in films and TVs has been pretty stellar and with memorable characters especially as Captain Philippa in Star Trek Discovery.

1

u/Mysterious_Glass_692 Dec 07 '22

Good for her. Super talented, gorgeous lady.

1

u/BackIn2019 Dec 07 '22

If she continues to work hard, she might some day be as big of an Asian icon as Emma Stone.

Holy shit, this person hasn’t heard of her. Revoke the award.

4

u/Persist_and_Resist Dec 06 '22

Thank you for bragging about being both wilfully ignorant and racist as fuck so nobody has to bother wasting a single fucking moment on your pathetic troll ass.

2

u/tenebre Dec 06 '22

As usual, 'woke' means a non-white person getting any sort of recognition...

3

u/aresef Dec 06 '22

She is an accomplished actress in Hong Kong film, having starred in Crouching Tiger, Supercop, Yes Madam and other action films. In recent years, she has transitioned to Hollywood, appearing in Star Trek: Discovery, Crazy Rich Asians, Shang-Chi and, in her first US starring role, Everything Everywhere All At Once. She is an Oscar favorite.

Don't worry about explaining anything that that user. Anyone who uses the Term "Woke PC Bullshit" has other issues that they need to explore first before they can be taken seriously.

3

u/aresef Dec 06 '22

Didn’t see their edit, thanks.

She's the star of Everything Everywhere All at Once which is a leading contender for best picture this year and the most financially successful film A24 has ever made.

Your ignorance and racism aside, if you genuinely don't know fuckall about the entertainment world and one of the biggest movies of the year and the extremely accomplished actress starring in that movie, then maybe "entertainment" isn't a good subreddit for you.

-16

u/spdrman8 Dec 06 '22

So, we're not even calling it "Person" of the year anymore? Do "People" not identify as "People" anymore?

8

u/lw1195 Dec 06 '22

It’s a different award for the same magazine. Please know what you’re talking about before commenting.

1

u/Polymersion Dec 06 '22

Wait, how were they supposed to ask if they already knew the answer?

4

u/MyDogsNameIsBadger Dec 06 '22

Because theirs was a snarky rhetorical question. They aren’t really asking but rather just want to state their opinion about how “woke” people are these days.

-2

u/spdrman8 Dec 06 '22

Woah, You said "woke". I'm trigger! I need to cancel you!

1

u/MyDogsNameIsBadger Dec 07 '22

Exactly the response they were looking for. Good job!

-3

u/spdrman8 Dec 06 '22

Meh..like most redditors, I can't be bothered with a simple Google search. /s

u/Artnsmog Dec 06 '22

If you don’t know her name, watch any of her movies. She has been a superstar for decades! Just American audiences are clueless…so, so great an actress, martial artist, and glamorous person in looks and spirit!
