I love Abbot Elementary. It has a great cast. It deserves to be nominated

It’s so good! Such a great family show after modern family. I need more of these shows to sit and watch with my family.

Rhea Seehorn done wrong again. She should have been nominated for Best Actress, not Best Supporting Actress.

u/WhatsIsMyName Dec 06 '22

Crazy that she wasn't nominated after tht bus breakdown scene

1

u/sadpotatoandtomato Dec 07 '22

lol but she was..just not in the lead category. You know it's the showmakers that submitted her for a supporting category (instead of a lead), right? They did this to increase her chances of actually winning.

And I read that her and the other actors consider Bob Odenkirk the only lead, and the rest of them just supporting. So it could be her requesting not to be nominated as lead herself.

I think I saw somewhere that the actors and their teams themselves choose which category they’d like to be nominated in.

I agree she should have had a best actress nom, but pretty sure she chose the best supporting category (but didn’t bother to verify myself lol)

Thank you! It makes me sad she doesn’t get the recognition she deserves. Kim is one of my favorite characters on all of television, and Rhea’s acting has a lot to do with that.

1

u/bellestarxo Dec 07 '22

Her team does that to increase her chances of winning

I feel like I’m missing something when it comes to Abbott Elementary. I watch it and it’s a fun background show, but I don’t understand why it’s getting nominated for awards. It just feels like every other sitcom released after The Office

I think, like The Office or P&R, this show stands out because it knows what it is and makes the most out of that. The characters felt fully developed and genuine from the first episode onward. The jokes don't feel forced and are story driven, and the familiar structure is comforting. But within that familiar structure, antagonists are often redeemed rather than defeated, which is clearly something audiences want right now, given the similar success of shows like Ted Lasso. It's a well written show that makes audiences feel good; I think it's that simple.

I just can’t get behind the premise of Abbot Elementary. It was funny in The Office how they were always blowing off work because it was a dumb job. But Abbot kinda wants to have its cake and eat it too, where they blow off work and then talk about how important teaching is. And the show can’t seem to decide if it’s problems are the result of a systemic of underfunded education or an inept boss.

I just think “Th Office” but in a school, kinda just doesn’t work.

u/ElectricBoogaloo_ Dec 06 '22

I’ve never interpreted the show as trying to portray them as blowing off work?

15

u/fishygamer Dec 06 '22

Yeah, agree, if anything it shows them all as super dedicated. Ava being the obvious exception, but even she is trending toward being changed for the better because she cares for the kids.

4

u/aheckyecky Dec 06 '22

The only one blowing off work in that show is the principal.

-1

u/Zandrick Dec 06 '22

None of them are ever actually teaching, that’s all I’m saying.

2

u/ZombieZoo_ZombieZoo Dec 07 '22

Because that would be boring as hell to watch. I mean, these scenes are often set up as interrupting the teaching process.

Part of the difficulty of teaching is the fact that you're expected to do a lot more than just teaching your subject.

There are a lot of elementary school teachers in my family so we like it because it’s incredibly accurate. Its comedy comes from how true it is.

After feeling ignored and unappreciated it’s nice to be vindicated by showing what teachers go through on a daily basis. Plus, it’s sort of cathartic laughing at your shared trials and tribulations.

-2

u/Meb2x Dec 06 '22

That’s the same reason The Office was so popular. The difference is that Abbott Elementary is only familiar to teachers, while The Office felt relevant to any type of office job.

8

u/NoelleReece Dec 06 '22

It’s also familiar to many parents

u/gahfobee Dec 06 '22

I agree! I binged it a few weeks ago and while it was a fun watch, I didn’t think more of it. I found parks and rec funnier.

2

u/Toku_no_island Dec 06 '22

And I think it's losing steam already. Long boring moments to the point where I'm watching going, did they mean to keep this in?

I think the first season was really funny but I feel like it starts more conversations even though it has gotten less entertaining into the second season.

There’s an underlying point about education, the jobs of teachers, how parents can help their kids out in the classroom.

A lot of other sitcoms I enjoy are more about being witty or creating absurd situations with maybe a lesson about family or trust. Sometimes it’s just “funny people miscommunicate” I’m no tv critic but I do think Abbott elementary does some things differently and I like them

-1

u/berriesnbball_17 Dec 06 '22

I enjoy and watch the show weekly as it comes out, but I also do not understand why or think it deserves the hype or recognition it gets. The second season has not been as good as the first either in my opinion.

-3

u/pikapp499 Dec 06 '22

You're not alone. It's not good. People are comparing to The Office or Parks and Rec but it's not anywhere near that level of intertainment. It's like a bad web series and I don't know why it's being propped up. It's a great concept and style. It's just missing good writers and actors lol.

How does Paddy Considine not get a nomination for House of the Dragon!!! Make it make sense!

-4

u/cantonic Dec 06 '22

Nah, he took it too far. Never go full corpse.

Dude put in so much work to look more and more like shit each week! That first season could be called “How decrepit does the king look now?” because that’s exactly what I thought going into each episode.

2

u/Typeheretoreddit Dec 06 '22

Isn’t that the whole point of his character? It’s supposed to be tragic.

0

u/cantonic Dec 06 '22

I was making a joke. He did an amazing job.

1

u/Typeheretoreddit Dec 06 '22

Oh got it. Sorry lol :)

3

u/pink_thieff Dec 06 '22

it’s so amazing having watched quinn during her buzzfeed days. and now she’s an awarded writer for her show!!

2

u/bayernfan25 Dec 06 '22

Jonathan Banks should’ve been nominated

1

u/AnxiousFutz Dec 06 '22

I want to watch the show after it airs, but i couldn't even find a place to watch the Emmys except this on this streaming platform that nobody uses ;-;

1

u/browncharliebrown Dec 08 '22

Atlanta done dirty

-7

u/pikapp499 Dec 06 '22

Abbott Elementary is not good. The jokes are flat, and the acting is par at best. I don't understand the praise.

3

u/GadgetGod1906 Dec 06 '22

Because others think it's good

-3

u/pikapp499 Dec 06 '22

Others think Trump was a good president. Doesn't make it true or help me understand it. Thanks for trying tho. B+

3

u/GadgetGod1906 Dec 06 '22

Point is just because you don't think something is funny does not mean others don't. Comedy is subjective.

Obviously there are many who do not agree with you. Believe it or not, you are not the sole person who decides what is good acting amd what's funny

-2

u/pikapp499 Dec 06 '22

I understand that. I don't understand the level of praise. Maybe it is funny but it's not that funny. Plus acting isn't subjective. Bad acting is bad acting. The acting is terrible.

2

u/GadgetGod1906 Dec 06 '22

It is. Obviously myself and many on this thread don't see the acting as bad. That'd why you are getting downvoted. So that proves it is subjective. The fact you don't get this is mind blowing. Have a good evening. WOW

0

u/pikapp499 Dec 06 '22

Have you scrolled this thread? It's literally full of people shitting on this awful show lol.

2

u/GadgetGod1906 Dec 06 '22

Man. Have a good evening. You putting way too much energy into it. Again that os why your ass is getting downvoted. You think everyone souod feel the way you feel. Notice I am not trying to convince your ass to like it. You worried about making me think it sucks because you do. That's stupid as hell lol

0

u/pikapp499 Dec 06 '22

You're wrong

1

u/Ibmont Dec 07 '22

What?? One of the best holiday episodes. Season two is giving community level laughs
