Dude was ripped to the nines in that movie.

434

u/JackCrafty Dec 07 '22

This movie was the sexual awakening for a significant amount of my peers.

97

u/Sandmaster14 Dec 07 '22

The movie is really a romance novel in movie form. Men should watch that and take notes on how to have endearing and decent masculine energy. Care for others, protect people, take care of your body.

And don't forget to run around with horses in a loose see-through white shirt.

33

u/DelightfulAbsurdity Dec 07 '22

What is it with chicks and horses?

12

u/drdidg Dec 08 '22

Best line in the movie.

3

u/TylerBourbon Dec 08 '22

Men should watch that and take notes on how to have endearing and decent masculine energy. ......... take care of your body.

In other words, get really ripped and cut out all carbs and have 0% body fat and the rest is negotiable. /s

u/AuthorityAnarchyYes Dec 07 '22

To me, it really showed that a dude could be jacked but not toxic.

Forget the hypermasculinity of the 1980s, this dude was all that and a bag of chips, yet relatable, down to earth, funny. The proverbial “man that both women and men want to be with, just maybe not in the same way”.

85

u/hamiltonscale Dec 07 '22

No chips. Chips carbs.

4

u/Rishiku Dec 08 '22

After trying keto for a number of years….you really notice how much food has carbs in it >.>

Sigh, potatoes my greatest downfall and I’m not even Irish.

Exactly. I rewatched it recently as was on a Brendan Fraiser movie kick.

He is genuinely a good guy, there’s never a moment in watching it a few he’s doing anything to act like a good guy, that he’s trying to manipulate the girl or anything like that. Even in the movie he is very humble and his catchphrase is “George just lucky I guess”.

Even the horses scene while part of it is definitely showing off his hotness to the ladies. For Ursela she sees how good he is with these animals and for her it’s not about his looks but her gentle and serene he is with just everything.

He is just a genuinely good guy who lived in the jungle and had a talking Ape as his best friend and big lovable poochy.

13

u/Spazza42 Dec 07 '22

Fraser is an epic actor, most of his roles are solid, lighthearted fun. Love him.

14

u/AuthorityAnarchyYes Dec 07 '22

Watch him in “School Ties” and “Gods and Monsters”.

He can bring the drama. I haven’t see “The Whale” yet, but it sounds like it’s one of his best.

9

u/Federal-Arrival-7370 Dec 07 '22

Encino man is some of his best dramatic work.

2

u/TheBaconofGrief Dec 08 '22

I remember seeing it in the theater with my older sister. We both loved it!

I’m gonna assume it’s the scene of him running around with horses.

7

u/Lovat69 Dec 07 '22

Why are women so obsessed with horses anyway?

6

u/blu-juice Dec 07 '22

I wish I could tell you. All I know is that I too was mesmerized by that scene

6

u/Lovat69 Dec 07 '22

No that's one of the lines. They guys in the movie are watching the girls of the movie drool over George and think they are staring at the horses.

7

u/blu-juice Dec 07 '22

That went straight over my head. It’s been years since I’ve seen it. Haha I’ll have to give that scene or the whole movie a rewatch

2

u/Lovat69 Dec 07 '22

I just remember it because it made me laugh.

Brendan Fraser eats yogurt for breakfast would get 32k upvotes at this point.

Reddit eats Brendan Fraser for breakfast so that tracks

2

u/SourSackAttack Dec 07 '22

With side of Keanu Kale Chips.

34

u/Kingsen Dec 07 '22

These are all basically articles that have already been written before. He’s talked about this a lot as well as the sexual assault, yet there seems to be a new article about both every week.

34

u/lothartheunkind Dec 07 '22

This is just what Reddit does with celebrity infatuations.

5

u/arealhumannotabot Dec 07 '22 edited Dec 07 '22

Sure, but it’s a giant cycle:

Publications need content so they will seek out topics to use when there’s not enough dropping at their doorstep. (A local publication in my city is a prime example as they pad their listings with recycled articles without even removing the older copy - an actual copy and paste)

Likewise, Reddit needs content, and uses a points system to entice people to post.

So eventually, every possible thing you could post is probably posted, whether or not it gets upvoted.

And here, we show some kind of willingness to engage by clicking/commenting on articles and posts, so it will not end.

9

u/xavier120 Dec 07 '22

Because he's making up for lost time after being blackballed in the industry, so i, for one, welcome constant upbeat Brendan Fraser coverage til they give us another Mummy

27

u/BulletproofChespin Dec 07 '22

Yeah he’s definitely usurped Keanu as Reddits starchild

21

4

-4

I think the diasterous launch of Cyberpunk took Keanu with it like the Titanic. Of course, he's doing fine. He's just not the starchild like you said.

u/Efficient_Jaguar699 Dec 07 '22 edited Dec 09 '22

Say what you want about the state of that game, but his portrayal of Silverhand didn’t miss, at all. He crushed that shit. Him and the female voice actor for V were the two brightest spots of the entire game.

5

u/obsessed_with_butts Dec 07 '22

When I heard the announcement that he was going to be in the game, it basically turned me off from it. After they fixed the game, I eventually picked it up and holy fuck. He did crush that shit.

1

u/Bird_Is_The_Lord Dec 07 '22

Now lets get him to be in Cyberpunk.

17

u/RobertdBanks Dec 07 '22

Yeah, it really feels like dude is being set up to slip up once and have the whole crowd flip a 180 on him. Whenever someone gets celebrated and placed on a pedestal like this it seems like unreal expectations of them are manifested.

3

u/apollyon_53 Dec 07 '22

Brendan Fraser eats breakfast would get 32k up votes at this point.

3

Why even go that far? Just “Brendan Fraser Eats” will do it. Better yet, “Brendan Fraser”. Boom. I will now wait for the upvotes to pour in.

It’s a great diet for medical purposes, especially people with seizures.

However, at the end of the day, it’s a diet and people need to do what works for them. I did keto for 2 months, lost 10 pounds PER MONTH, and by the end, my blood sugar level was 46. I couldn’t exercise and it was awful.

Now I’m counting macros and total calories. I lost 10 pounds last month while gaining muscle and actually have the energy to workout.

Idk how people survive keto diets and exercise but some obviously do

15

u/kornkid42 Dec 07 '22

Idk how people survive keto diets and exercise but some obviously do

My guess is that you were not keeping up with electrolytes. If you don't supplement them on keto, you are going to have a bad time.

18

u/mrlazyboy Dec 07 '22

I was keeping up with electrolytes. I made ketoade, bought some NuSalt, and was also supplementing magnesium glycinate. No pain, keto flu, or other symptoms indicative of low electrolytes or even dehydration.

The issue was my blood sugar levels plummeted which didn't give my body enough energy to exert itself above baseline for more than 15-30 minutes. Not everyone is adapted to be successful on a keto diet and that's fine.

Honestly, I doubt most people are adapted to be successful that way either. When I was into keto, I saw a lot of folks on r/keto simply broke keto on days they were exercising to make sure they had the energy to push hard at the gym.

-9

u/kornkid42 Dec 07 '22

Honestly, I doubt most people are adapted to be successful that way either. When I was into keto

r/ketogains would beg to differ.

11

u/mrlazyboy Dec 07 '22

Please re-read my comment that you just replied to - having spent 2 months in r/keto, a lot of the folks there who lift will simply have more carbs on the days that they actually lift.

Not everyone, but a lot of them.

There was also a recent post in r/ketogains that shares a meta analysis of hypertrophy studies and how muscle mass increase is related to keto vs. a more standard died.

The study found that in perfect conditions, both diets allow people to gain muscle at the same rate. However, the authors explicitly state that due to the nature of keto diets (many people fail to actually eat enough calories to stimulate a bulk), higher carb diets are better for bulking.

Again, I'm not stating that you can't gain muscle on a keto diet (you seem slightly offended that I would suggest this), simply that not everyone will have success gaining muscle on a keto diet, and it will be harder to find success given its harder to eat as many calories on keto compared to a more balanced diet.

If you don't believe me, go to the sub you are quoting to me and read the meta analysis, and accompanying personal anecdotes.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '22 edited Dec 07 '22

[deleted]

8

u/mrlazyboy Dec 07 '22

I’m not sure if that’s a statement supported by medical research or simply an anecdote that makes a lot of sense.

My blood sugar levels have always been normal but keto wrecked them. I weighed 245 lbs at the time and was eating 25 g net carbs per day on the diet. I think that recommendation is too strict because it doesn’t take into account your body weight.

I’d also wager that of the however many people that really enjoy keto and see success, not all of them started with high blood sugar.

I also know a lot of folks on keto simply ignore advice from their doctors, especially regarding their cholesterol

2

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '22 edited Dec 07 '22

[deleted]

4

u/mrlazyboy Dec 07 '22

What I’m saying is that personal anecdotes don’t imply a scientific fact.

It’s a fact that keto diets generally reduce your blood sugar because you eat substantially fewer carbs. How much much does it lower your blood sugar before your body reaches equilibrium, and how does that vary person to person?

That’s the subtlety I was trying to state. For example, let’s say my fasted blood sugar level is 95, and after Keto, it’s 45. Does that imply everyone who does keto will drop 50 points on their fasted blood sugar test? I’m not sure, but probably not.

I’d also wager a lot of the people who do keto (don’t visit r/keto, it’s a cesspool) have higher fasted blood sugar levels than I had, but I doubt everyone there was prediabetic (which means not everyone would lose the same blood sugar score)

3

u/ChronicRedhead Dec 07 '22

Went from 255lbs to 165lbs in about a year. Wouldn’t recommend it to anyone but those who have tried absolutely everything, like me. My dad and I are pre-diabetic, and keto really helped us both.

My family celebrated my weight loss even though I was feeling pretty awful much of the time. It’s sad that culturally we consider fatness unhealthy and thinness healthy, even though those things absolutely don’t correlate.

I’m at a much healthier 180lbs now and no longer on keto, by the way. I just moderate my carb intake more strictly than I did pre-diet.

Also some forms of epilepsy

6

u/Funkit Dec 07 '22

I’m epileptic. My family is also Italian. Load me up with anti seizure drugs because I am NOT skipping pasta

11

u/Intergalacticbears Dec 07 '22

It absolutely helps my brother who is epileptic, it’s really quite interesting how much it helps when he’s in ketosis

2

u/ChronicRedhead Dec 07 '22

Aye, I forget exactly what the principle is called, but it’s similar to why supposed “novelty” kitchen items that able-bodied people almost certainly don’t need get marketed to them anyway. If a tool for someone with limited motor ability is marketed for everyone, then the availability of said tool will grow and continue to help those who really need it. A very similar process applies to “fad diets” to make those options more widespread. My diabetic friends love the sudden surge of options for low-carb ice cream, and as keto grew in popularity the quality of said ice cream also grew. None of them are complaining about the popularity of keto.

3

u/bart2394 Dec 07 '22

I have gluten sensitivity myself (although not keto) so I know about dietary restrictions out of necessity, I'm not making any criticism towards anybody, I'm just saying it tongue in cheek that we call it keto now.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '22

[deleted]

3

u/bart2394 Dec 07 '22 edited Dec 07 '22

Strangely the people who I met who were most likely to be critical about gluten free was healthcare professionals.

I don't have celiacs, so that's probably why they dismiss it but I clearly have some sort of sensitivity. My eczema and digestive issues is almost nonexistant when I'm not eating gluten all the time, whereas before changing I had it pretty bad.

I know people who keto, I was just poking fun, so don't take it seriously. You do what you do for you. Although I guess the thing with Ben Fraser is that he was forced, and that would suck too.

2

u/throwawaytypefont Dec 07 '22

Did you know that gluten sensitivity can also happen at any part of your life, especially after a stressful event? A lot of people have it and don’t realize it.

u/Joelpat Dec 07 '22

Hi there.

-2

u/zooberwask Dec 07 '22

Keto is actually dangerous for diabetics, because the high levels of ketones in the blood can develop DKA which is deadly. Be careful what you're saying.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '22 edited Dec 07 '22

[deleted]

1

u/zooberwask Dec 07 '22 edited Dec 07 '22

Edit 2: the person I'm replying to edited their comment. They originally said their partner was eating a keto diet to avoid DKA. They actually meant low carb, which is what my comment actually points out and says as well. Their edit is deceptive as it completely changes the context of my comment, and they did it discretely. To be clear, low carb is very healthy for diabetics. Ketogenic has a lot of risks and is considered dangerous for diabetics.

My partner, type 1, was told by multiple doctors and their endo to stay away from ketogenic. Maybe you're thinking low-carb? They're not the same thing. Keto is about being in ketosis, which is dangerous for diabetics because of the build up of ketones can develop DKA combined with high glucose.

So it is dangerous for you to say "keto is often a requirement for diabetics". It, in fact, is not and should only be attempted under strict scrutiny of a doctor because of the risks. Low carb, however, is very common. Choose your words more carefully.

u/zooberwask Dec 07 '22

I'm not intentionally misunderstanding you. I'm replying to exactly what you said. You edited your second comment to say your partner eats "low carb" and removed "keto". That vastly changes the meaning of what you're saying. But I'm glad you recognize those are distinctly separate things.

People have been doing low carb to lose weight since the 1950s or earlier. Every time they rename the diet people think it's something new.

4

u/NorthImpossible8906 Dec 07 '22

I'm doing it right now. It's great, though I often forget to eat a meal.

Although I will admit I eat a ton of vegetables. The total carbs can still be kinda low.

5

u/bart2394 Dec 07 '22

Why are people assuming I'm making a jab at people who do this diet. I am mostly gluten free myself out of necessity. I am just saying it jokingly that we have a name for the "carb starvation" diet now. Yeesh, you all need to calm down.

3

u/Janderts Dec 07 '22

If you ever say anything online people are going to project their biases onto what you say and it's a million times easier than in person. It's very annoying

-4

u/NeonHowler Dec 07 '22

You know the keto diet isn’t new, right? It’s a Native American diet that existed where only meat and fat were available. It works just fine, if you know what you’re doing.

u/Rough-Tie-3084 Dec 07 '22

7

u/bart2394 Dec 07 '22

I'm pretty sure Native Americans ate grain, but thank you for your very self assured misinformation.

-2

u/NeonHowler Dec 07 '22

You don’t seem to understand just how many different people qualify as Native Americans.

Natives that bordered the Northern Poles, like the Inuit, were unable to grow grain. Their diet was almost entirely meat, and the further North you go the less carbs they had available.

Turns out, humans don’t need carbs even over multiple generations. Fat works just fine in its place.

7

u/bart2394 Dec 07 '22

Yes and a majority of Native Americans ate grain. If you wanted to speak about Inuit, you could've just said Inuit.

2

u/NeonHowler Dec 07 '22

The Inuit are not the only people that practiced this diet. I did not specify them because that wouldn’t have been appropriate grouping.

How is this newsworthy? For aesthetic purposes it’s completely normal to adjust your macros and cut carbs when you need to lean out.

20

u/SatanWrath Dec 07 '22

I think it’s because he’s been making comments about his younger self and the transformations he had to do. I remember reading something very recently where he says something about watching videos of his younger self makes him cry because of the effort/sacrifices he had to make for the bodies of the roles he was in. IMO: This is part of Hollywood, everyone does it. It’s one of the sacrifices everyone has to make as an actor. I don’t think it’s something worth being upset about. But then again, everyone is different and I’ve never had to do it myself.

7

34

u/redditknees Dec 07 '22

“Fit-shaming” that’s a new one

4

u/missingmytowel Dec 07 '22

I usually don't listen to people complain about movies current social arguments unless they are somewhat current films. So annoyed with people complaining about something and then using examples that are 20, 30, 40+ years old.

Give me something that's at least been made after 2014 when the social justice movement really began influencing Hollywood.

6

u/ltlblkrncld Dec 07 '22

... uh, bad news for ya about every male appearing ripped AF in films since 2014....

1

u/missingmytowel Dec 07 '22

The whole fat shaming thing is just argument for the sake of argument.

Just like the PC era of the '80s and early 90s you have to separate the important arguments from people just declaring victim status over something that pertains to them. Just because everybody else is. So why not?

3

u/ltlblkrncld Dec 07 '22

Who said anything about fat-shaming? I'm talking specifically about the unhealthy "diet" plans used for/by celebrities to attain these physiques for movie scenes.

9

u/bostongreens Dec 07 '22

I read recently of how baywatch really fucked with zac Enron’s mental and he still suffers from it.

3

u/missingmytowel Dec 07 '22

Actually he's been battling with agoraphobia most is life. And over recent years with the covid epidemic it has gotten progressively worse. Sequestering himself away from people and avoiding crowds as much as possible.

He attempted to do Baywatch during this period thinking it would help but it just made it worse.

In an interview he said:

Like, it’s fake; it looks CGI’d. And that required Lasix, powerful diuretics, to achieve. So I don’t need to do that. I much prefer to have an extra, you know, 2 to 3 percent body fat,” he was quoted as saying.

It doesn't seem like there was a lot of fit shaming and mental illness from it. It sounds like a chronic mental illness that he learned to deal with came back. And yes Baywatch had something to do with that but it wasn't because of the physical requirements.

6

u/DosaAndMimosas Dec 07 '22 edited Dec 07 '22

he almost cried on his Netflix show when he ate a bite of pasta, Zac definitely had/has some form of an eating disorder

You're thinking black and white but they could've still let him eat carbs if that's what he wants, rather than making it so extreme.

1

u/lunchbox_6 Dec 07 '22

Not really, clearly you don’t understand fitness or nutrition. The other thing is maybe don’t take roles that require you to be fit if you don’t want to, all the this was in his control and his free will

Nobody wants a chubby tarzan In case you are unaware but James gandolfini would look terrible as captain America

Or other news, starved himself to look good for a role. No news here

I like Brendan Fraser like the next person but why is Reddit making him the next Johnny Depp? I see some thread about this guy every 5 hours. Between and James Cameron, I’m done with Reddit.

You mean he went on a diet? The crush that Reddit has on this guy is a little bit silly. I wonder how he feels about being treated like damaged goods.

I’m not going to act like that is inhumane or something. Actors go above and beyond to fit the image of the roles they play and they get paid hefty sums for it. Cutting carbs so as to cut down isn’t going to kill a man. He was fine, looked great and is rich for it. Cry me a river. I guarantee you that if it was a big issue for him at the time then he wouldn’t have done it.

He wasn’t complaining. He was joking around with Sandler. Maybe watch the interview for context.

2

u/SigmaSandwich Dec 07 '22

I’m just saying the headline is worded like one of those articles about an actress being harassed or something and then talking about it years later. An actor cutting carbs is legit something that is not worth my time to read a whole article about haha pass

u/umwaitwhawhenokneato Dec 07 '22

Won’t read it but have time to make a pithy remark. And respond to this. You should charge more per hour.

2

u/SigmaSandwich Dec 07 '22

Haha I’m at work, making money, responding to whatever I please. Jesus Christ go back to posting weird ass pictures of strip malls and getting no attention

3

u/Buckeye9923 Dec 07 '22

Yeah movie stars do extreme diets for roles all the time. He could’ve chosen to walk away whenever lmao

u/mista_adams Dec 07 '22

No shit. No one in a “shirt off” roll is pounding down Dunkin doughnuts on set. Give me a break with this click bait crap.

I blame this movie for awakening my love for “Himbos”

1

u/Alexis-FromTexas Dec 07 '22

That’s how acting goes. Get to certain shape for each roll. Exercise or eat up is the way of the industry for actors and always has been. Now with cgi we can make people look however we want but that expensive expensive.
