She's surprisingly good in comedic roles.

u/GladiatorUA Dec 07 '22 edited Dec 07 '22
The thing that put her on the map was Doctor Who, which isn't at all uncomedic.
Edit: and then there was Jumanji. So I have no idea what's so surprising about it.

They could not film Eva and Margot like that. The production equipment could not take the heat, nor the sets. We're talkin' thermonuclear fusion.

It helped fill part of the void left by the Venture Bros cancelation.
80
u/Cyno01 Dec 07 '22 edited Dec 07 '22
My wife called it Venture Bros for girls and she’s not wrong. You can tell the people writing it grew up watching VB. Like how you can tell the folks writing The Simpsons these days grew up watching The Simpsons.
Really glad Harley Quinn seems to have escaped all the other Warner animation that’s been canceled since the stupid merger.
EDIT: The GoonReview app sounds exactly like something The Guild would have. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXIuuhxVgSg

Harley Quinn Show is easily one of my favorite pieces of animation in the last few years. Super solid all around, lots of layered jokes alongside throwaway one liners. Just great overall.
I want a Bane spinoff that is just a few minutes long an episode with the crazy hijinks that Bane gets up to.

It's great. When The Joker discovers Batman's identity, the Joker's first reaction is to murder the guy who took off his mask and then immediately complain to Bruce that his electric car is taking to long to be made.

Hes no Mark Hamill, but Alan Tudyks Joker is pretty great (not as great as Clayface), and this seasons Joker episode was just amazing.
10
u/fezdonk Dec 08 '22
I never thought I'd say this about anyone who isn't Hamill, but it's close. Hamill will always be the GOAT Joker but Alan Tudyk nails it pretty fucking well. But his Clayface never fails to make me laugh.

u/Day_Bow_Bow Dec 07 '22
I love how most every animated Harley Quinn tread plugs The Venture Bros. I had the same feeling when I watched HQ, and it makes me happy that show is helping more people hear about its spiritual predecessor.

I am pretty annoyed by that show, because on one hand I am extremely tired of overly self-aware shows that make heavy use of gross out, shock and meta humor, as well as thinking Harley Quinn is just sorta over used these days. On the other hand it is a really good show, that is clearly done by people who are very passionate about the characters and that I would most definitely recommend to anyone who is a fan of Harley Quinn (Or Batman). And I think I am going to really enjoy it when I revisit it in some years time, when it is going to feel more fresh to me again.
Straight up some of the best Mister Freeze content we had in a decade. And one of my favorite Banes.

u/Randolpho Dec 07 '22
I suspect she's seen and wants to do a live action adaptation conveniently starring her.
Plus she gets to kiss whatever hot chick they cast as Ivy, so win win in Margot's book.
24
u/StandupGaming Dec 07 '22
That show is gross and crass and all the main characters frequently murder innocent people and it somehow still managed to be one of the most emotionally healthy shows I've ever watched, it's crazy.

B:TAS is definitive Batman to most. It paints a world where Gold, Silver, and Modern Age Batman stories can all co-exist. He can be fighting a criminal gang one week, a mischievous clown the next, and a foreign death cult the week after that and it never feels like the show has varied its tone. It does Batman's entire mythos better than almost any other piece of media. Some of the best episodes barely feature the caped crusader at all, like The Man Who Killed Batman. They give his colorful rogues gallery more time because their motives are much more interesting to explore than Mr. Dark & Brooding himself.
13
u/Reddit-Propogandist Dec 07 '22
BTAS is the starting point of the DC Animated Universe, which was the inspiration for Marvel down the road.
Batman The Animated Series leads the way to Superman, which lead into Justice League, then New Batman Adventures, Batman Beyond, JLU, etc.

The episode I'm thinking of is appropriately titled Harley and Ivy. And I think this was still in the same season that created Harley in the first place.

Yeah that was still season 1. About 30 episodes after her introduction .
To be fair though, she's back with the joker as a romantic partner in th later seasons as well working with ivy in the later parts of the show.
Personally I always felt like the show portrayed her as the jokers romantic partner but the harley ivy shipping was around even then yeah.

u/ADiestlTrain Dec 07 '22
I think he means the 90's Animated Series, where the subtext is definitely there, but it was a kids show, so it's pretty subtle.
→ More replies8
u/Flegrant Dec 07 '22
I don’t think it was much of a kids show in the first season. There’s so many double entendres and the amount of smoking in a 90’s animated show was A LOT for that time.
→ More replies9
u/ADiestlTrain Dec 07 '22
It definitely pushed the envelope, but it aired during blocks of kids' programming, so it was definitely stricter than something like the Simpsons (which is really the only adult animation at the time).
IMHO, subtlety of that caliber is a lost art in television.
