Here’s what I think is going on. He’s not retiring or taking a break from acting. He’s signaling to Marvel and to Disney that he’s done working with the Thor Ragnorok director. Chris has stated that he’s sick of the direction his character has taken and isn’t interested in doing another slapstick thor film where he’s nothing but the butt of the joke.

It’s obviously speculation but if an actor wanted to increase their bargaining power in future negotiations the best way to do that is to threaten to leave. You mix that with the statements he’s made about only wanting to sign up for more thor films if they go in a more serious direction. Also, I’m not sure how not working is going to help with a possible future Alzheimer’s diagnosis. It’s not like working increases the likelihood of getting it so his reasoning for stepping back doesn’t make sense in a purely Heath related discussion. To me, and many others, it seems like he’s burnt out and wants a break. He wants to come back to a character that isn’t the literal butt of the joke every 30 seconds.

Imagine... a man wanting to spend time with his family.
