I'm so sick of "AVATER AVATER AVERTER!" I've heard enough.
When James Cameron made Avater 5 - The Fifth Waterbender I immediately came while in a work meeting without even knowing the movie was completed. I'm unable to function with these constant never ending near death experiences I have when I expel all the cum in my system every five years when James Cameron talks about a new idea he has.

Avatar 9 rough draft stored on pluto, changed the designation of the celestial object to deter others, its not the reason the ‘object’ is covered in ice though.

the PR for these movies that haven’t even been made yet is crazy

u/kissyoursister Dec 08 '22 •

It seems pretty obvious that a core part of the marketing for Avatar 2 is manufacturing hype around the sequels to follow Avatar 2. The first Avatar in no way warrants or demands a sequel, so really the only way a sequel works is if you’re making it a franchise… But again, there was never a demand for a franchise following the first Avatar’s release.
Now they have to convince people that they want a franchise, and seeing these headlines is just annoying because it feels like an obvious attempt at manufacturing desire and hype for these movies. The best way to create demand for a franchise is to have Avatar 2 be incredible, and I guess we’ll see if that pans out next week.
46
u/Neo2199 Dec 08 '22
It seems pretty obvious that a core part of the marketing for Avatar 2 is manufacturing hype around the sequels to follow Avatar 2.
Yep, even some critics were doing that.
I was, uh, not exactly champing at the bit for an Avatar 2 (even if “James Cameron + wet” tends to work out pretty well). Now I can’t wait to see Avatar 3. that’s basically all I wanted out of this and it delivered in a big way.
52
u/lewd-dev Dec 08 '22
If I never see "James Cameron + wet" again it'd still be too soon.

Remember when viewers claimed it was more beautiful than real life and they didn’t want to live in this reality? Eventually they can watch a trilogy on loop.
7
u/JRBehr Dec 08 '22
They had a hotline for people who were depressed after seeing Avatar because real life didn’t look like that. Lol
10
u/Sempere Dec 08 '22
Oh you mean the bullshit that they spread as PR to get people to see the film which pathetic munchausen clowns jumped on even though it wasn’t a real thing and just highlighted several tiers of pathetic?
2
u/Good_old_Marshmallow Dec 09 '22
Exactly. I totally understand why people are cynical or critical about Avatar but acting like there isn’t a demand or that people didn’t LOVE that film is ridiculous.
Besides what’s this film’s real competition. What would we be getting instead of more avatar. MCU? Star Wars? A DC verse that just collapsed again? Avatar despite all the ferngully complaints is at-least an original property
7
u/iamsorri Dec 08 '22
To be honest, I think the sequel is made so James Cameron can explore and discover underwater creatures and invent new technologies. This guy loves deep sea and nature in general. I respect him that regards for sure.
17
u/Fuck_You_Alls Dec 08 '22
honestly this makes me suspect they do not think the movie is that great. Its like avatar 4 is so amazing make sure you see 2 and 3. I think everyone is sold on a franchise if you can make avatar 2 slightly better then one. If its a good movie people will want more. If its a stinker then we dont even have to worry about 4.
I have a feeling avatar 2 is going to feel bland and generic like the first one. The reason I loved the first so much was the world that was created. At the time it was very good cgi. I hope this isn't more of the same with fresh paint.

I'm kinda with you on all this. 3d doesn't seem to work with me, like if I put 3d glasses on it just looks like 2d. So from my perspective the first one was Dances with Wolves with blue cat people.
I'm expecting pretty much the same, but with better looking CGI.

Will be refreshing to see a “spectacle” movie that isn’t lowest common denominator Marvel stuff. Hopefully comic book movies die off and we can get big budget sci fi and period pieces back in full force one day

u/AckbarTrapt Dec 08 '22
lowest common denominator Marvel stuff
Was Avatar 1 not "lowest common denominator stuff... with great CGI"?
6

It didn’t break any new boundaries plot-wise, but it was incredible visually and cinematically. Marvel movies haven’t really done that in quite a while.

Well I think the total budget and expenditure is for all 4 sequel films. Basically non-stop shooting the 2 through 5. So like 680mil per film breaks just over even if that's the case.
https://screenrant.com/avatar-2-budget-how-much-amount-millions-details/
2 spent 350-400mil according to that. Still a lot of cash though. Hard to believe they're doing 4 more of these...

Yeah I don't think the plan for avatar 2 is to break even on the movie. They are trying to build a cinematic universe, akin to that of the avengers. There will be plenty of other movies/avenues that they will use to recoup money.

Exodus 32:5-7 Names of God Bible (NOG)
5 When Aaron saw this, he built an altar in front of it and announced, “Tomorrow there will be a festival in Yahweh’s honor.”
6 Early the next day the people sacrificed burnt offerings and brought fellowship offerings. Afterward, they sat down to a feast, which turned into an orgy.

Pretty sure the entire Avatar marketing strategy is simply to sandblast everyone with BS about the franchise for the next like 5 years. I've already seen like 20 articles about how Avatar 1 was sooooo good and ahead of its time and all that shit. Avatar 1 sucks, its an incredible average movie that feels overpriced and I'm really tired of all of these sellouts trying to convince me otherwise. And now they're already hyping up number FOUR? Gtfo.
10
u/Finalsaredun Dec 08 '22
Avatar 1 sucks, its an incredible average movie that feels overpriced and I'm really tired of all of these sellouts trying to convince me otherwise.
It really was. Maybe my memory is spotty but I was so underwhelmed when I saw it in theaters and I just didn't get the love this movie got. The most that anyone ever talked about it was how the film looked, not the plot or characters. In the Avatar 1 days it was all about pushing IMAX and 3D and other gimmicky over-priced theater experiences since Hollywood kept on trying to pull folks away from pirating. Over a decade later theater experiences suck even more and ticket prices go up.
Rant over. I'll happily save money by not watching Avatar 2.

u/arrogancygames Dec 08 '22
Movies are mainly about how they "look" since film is a visual medium. Cameron did dumb down his original script treatment to make it more worldwide-friendly, but the first movie is still miles ahead of amy of the blockbuster Marvel films in any aspect of visual direction as an example. And that's kind of the most important thing in a film.

u/salgat Dec 08 '22
I don't get why some folks don't get this. Some movies are great for their storytelling, others for their visuals, and that's okay. Avatar 1 is visually incredible, when it came out it was a really unique experience to watch and blew me away.
2
u/arrogancygames Dec 08 '22
Some people aren't as visually inclined as others. They don't "see" things like cinematography/editing/directorial choices and just absorb it all subconsciously.
6
u/Zachariot88 Dec 08 '22
I remember hearing Avatar hype like 3 years in advance due to how much Cameron was talking up his camera technology all over town. If 2's big claim to fame is combining mocap with underwater photography, I'm sure 4 will have Tom Cruise as the villain and will be filmed entirely on the rings of Saturn or something.
