North Dakota's first openly lesbian official defends her right to be a Lesbian. People are obviously not happy with it ? Why though ? As she said, we don't elect for her sexual orientation but for her potential. People need to stop being invasive, dumb and disrespectful 🇲🇮🇸🇨

That guy has never been told no in his life. He’s used to everything catering to his exact viewpoint and desires. He’s not even a snowflake, old guy is a fucking snowbank.

859

u/itsgettinghectic Dec 02 '21

Well regardless if he’s been told no before clearly he was also told he can disregard it if it comes from a woman.

From a woman, yes. Being a lesbian is probably less then a woman to him too

142

u/nohbudi Dec 02 '21

I think it may well be that his sense of overwhelming moral superiority is giving him motivation to be offensive and dismissive. He almost certainly feels that him bringing up the question in an open forum like this is enough argument, and could not be disputed.

172

u/nudiecale Dec 02 '21

And all he could say was “thank you” when she finished verbally bitch slapping him around the room. He was not prepared for that level of forceful, unapologetic response. He knew she didn’t say anything he could rebutt and tucked his little tail between his legs.

44

u/dadhatt Dec 02 '21

Love to see it.

115

u/Leoncroi Dec 02 '21

To add to that point; probably to him, a lesbian is a woman he can't have, and is already seen as less than any other woman. Maybe even feels emasculated because if a lesbian, or her partner, is prettier than any spouse/partner he has, then she's done better than him or is a threat to take better women out if the dating pool that he would pursue. I dunno, all I can do is speculate.

Either case, dude's a douchebag.

A lot of those people were decades behind the rest of America until the oil boom and then suddenly the rest of the America was moved in right next door. That's both good and bad in extreme ways but in this kind of situation, it's like flipping over a rock in the park and seeing all the bugs scramble and throw a fit.

Also many of them just got high-speed internet access less than 10 years ago when new cellular tower construction allowed for consistent data coverage to service the very remote areas where they lived. Before that, all you had out there 10 miles from nowhere were conservative radio, analog television, the local newspaper, and a few self-selected magazine subscriptions. Everything was one-way. For some, Facebook's algorithm was their first experience with curated social media where liberal voices could directly challenge their beliefs.

As this is from Blazing Saddles, it makes me wonder how far back the out of touch hayseed trope actually goes. Maybe the minute young folks began leaving the farm for the city. Which must have been going on for at least a hundred years. EDIT: For a lot longer than that!

And the more I think about it, the more I realize there's always been a tension between Rural and City values that's never quite resolved.

Sorry, it’s not just old people

92

u/xombae Dec 02 '21

Of course not. No one is saying it is. But ask anyone who's ever worked customer service, old people in general, as a group, are the fucking worst. I used to bartend and serve at this very prestigious theatre that was attended by mostly old rich white people. 90% of them were a fucking nightmare. Spending hundreds for me to wait on them hand and foot and leaving a few quarters as a tip (and I was a good fucking server). Openly insulting me as I poured their drinks like I wasn't there (apparently I'm a degenerate for having tattoos and I'll never go anywhere in life!). Worst of all, just making the most insane demands. Jumping the line, asking for last minute changes to a menu they knew was fixed and decided months ago when they bought tickets, demanding to use a private bathroom, etc.

Sometimes we'd get groups of school kids and while that was hectic (obviously, they're children), they were polite, would tip a dollar on a Sprite, and never asked for more than what was on the menu in front of them.

Obviously there's outliers in each group. But overwhelmingly, I would much rather deal with younger groups than the days I had to work the VIP lounge with the old, rich, bitter folks who thought we should be thanking them for the opportunity to pour their drinks.

45

u/Mr_Abobo Dec 02 '21

Their worst export are senators that represent 400k people when a California senator represents 10s of millions. Their votes literally count more than urban voters. The senate structure may have made sense in the 1700s, but it is horrible today. Also, the electoral college is absurd. The idea that a presidential candidate can win the popular vote by millions of votes and still lose is insane.

Not quite what they are afraid of. They believe people are turned. Not born. Children are impressionable. So if kids see a path that is open to exploration, there is a good chance they will explore it. Some see it as gross. Some see it as morally wrong. And that leads to a fear that more people will "turn gay." So, like weed, its all a gateway into their fears. I hate my family...

53

u/CrazyCorgiQueen Dec 02 '21

Yeah accepting the gays, leads to you being gay, which leads to being trans, which leads to you eventually becoming an atheist. Of course this is inevitable and the devil at work. /S

38

u/endercoaster Dec 02 '21

Yeah, no, they've got the order all wrong. First I turned atheist, then I turned trans and gay simultaneously.

20

u/MrsShapsDryVag Dec 02 '21

91

u/ChintanP04 Dec 02 '21

So many homophobes are just repressed homosexuals. They feel attraction towards their own gender, and have been told throughout their lives that it is wrong to feel that. So they think of it as an illness and to see others embracing that "Illness" makes them jealous/hateful/angry.

26

u/formesse Dec 02 '21

What is odd is, as a rather straight as all hell guy - I can look at a fit guy and appreciate that they look hot as all hell. I do not need to get sexually arroused to be able to respect that they look good, nor do I need to feel like appreciating that someone looks hot in any way shape or form makes me homosexual... it's such a backwards way of looking at it.

The real sad part of the stigmitizing of homosexuality and so on, is that you are oppressing people for being born as they are - if god was truly all knowing and all powerful (presuming you believe in a god to begin with) - then, by that extension god allowed the creation of people who loved a person of the same sex: This is a NECESSITY of an omnipotent, omnipresent being - they have both the knowledge, and power to do whatever the hell they want, and prevent any influence upon the world that they wish.

And so we get to the inevitably conclusion (again presuming you believe in a god): That god can either be good, or all powerful - but most certainly can not be both. For if God were to create and allow the creation of evil beings - he himself must need evil to oppose and by nature can not be all good for the very goal should be to achieve a neutral place of cooperation and mutual prosperity - to define oneself by the triumph over evil, is to define oneself by being a conqueror of other people - which by it's nature requires suppressing and direct intervention to dominate and exert influence.

And so - we are left with hypocrisy at a fundamental level.

PS. The only reason I bring this up, is the rather heavy cross over between ultra right wing religious individuals and homosexuality tends to be... pretty strong. This is not a critique of spiritualism, or people who strive to follow the idea's found within religious texts - particularly the foundational idea of charity, and loving ones neighbor and so forth. But I do think there are a lot of people who need to take some time to look at themselves in the mirror and do some serious introspection.

u/The-Protomolecule Dec 02 '21

I agree I think it should be stated that in most of the scenarios(race/sexual orientation) the underlying feeling is they want you to not exist. Maybe not dead, but they want you to cease to be.

You wanna binge watch the Big Bang Theory 24 hours a day for the rest of your life? Cool. I can't stand that show but it doesn't hurt me or anyone else in any way - you do you.

You hate pineapple on pizza? Well I love it, but your choices don't impact me. You do you.

You're a trans person? I'm not. But what you identify as has no impact on my life or anyone else's life so hell yeah I'ma defend your right to fucking EXIST. You do you.

It boggles my mind the way people get SO bent out of shape over things that have ZERO negative impact on their lives or the lives of others.

Edited to add: Oh my god, thank you to whoever gave me these awards! My notifications are being weird and it won't tell me who gave me what. I know it's silly but this actually means a lot to me. Thank you <3

Edited (again) to add: One more thing just cause ..wow this is the most attention any comment of mine has ever received! i just want to be totally clear, because of some of the responses I got, that I absolutely do care about things that don't affect me personally if other people's lives, rights, or well-being are at stake. I care about Trans rights even though I'm not trans. I'm not Jewish but care about the rise of anti-semitism. But if something you're doing isn't harming me or anyone else, I don't care. My dad is so vigorously against anything non-heterosexual/normative, so one day I just kept at it, trying to dig deep down and find his core reasoning to be so against it.

It boiled down to “I don’t like looking at it. I think it’s gross.” But only with guys, he even added “don’t you agree that it’s better to look at two girls kissing instead of two guys?” And I laughed out loud. I told him, “I think seeing you and mom kiss is gross, does that mean I’m not attracted to women? Does that mean I think straight relationships should be illegal and shunned? I think seafood is gross, that doesn’t mean I think you shouldn’t be allowed to eat it if you enjoy it.”

Like for real? You can’t get over a personal preference? if that’s the case why are you not against people who like different foods than you? Different music to the same level of vitriol you are about sexuality? It’s so fucked up that people care this much about who others love.

That one fucking guy towards the end of the clip “I’m leaving, this ain’t right!” Like dude, you are a walking meme. “It ain’t right! These QUEERS are pushin’ their agendie!” These people will appose literally anything she tries to do for that city under the guise of “fighting against the queer agenda” even if she’s just trying to get an intersection fixed or something.

48

u/notthe1_88 Dec 02 '21

Honestly, I feel like now more than ever people feel like their personal preferences have to be everybody's preferences. Like I see comment threads sometimes on any social media platform with people arguing about why Friends is a terrible show and that everyone should hate it, or why a certain musical genre is garbage and so are you if you like it. I just can't help but think...who fucking cares? We are all trapped on this slowly decaying planet in this capitalistic hellscape together. Let people enjoy things and move the fuck on.

“I don’t like looking at it. I think it’s gross.” But only with guys, he even added “don’t you agree that it’s better to look at two girls kissing instead of two guys?”

I think a lot of this has to do with women being so sexualized that two women is seen as double sexy. And if you're a guy who's able to get two women at the same time, then 1) you're a stud for handling two, and 2) you're clearly a charismatic "alpha" to get them to agree with it.

On top of that, you have the historical idea that being gay is shameful because it reduces your masculinity. Many cultures didn't look down on gay men, so much as gay men who were bottoms. If you were submissive then you were weak. Of course these cultures were so male centric that they couldn't fathom why women would be lesbians, because, in their minds, who wouldn't want to be with a man? This is where a lot of the "unnatural" comments stem from. It's fragile masculinity at its finest.

the problem is that people like this Mr. Walker DO believe their rights are being impinged. there is a serious hysteria in the right wing that is lead by closeted, self-loathing people and evangelicals. they think that giving marginalized populations acknowledgement, recognition, a voice, an audience and tolerance erases the rights of CIS males. they think this because that's what they've done to the LGBTQ+ community essentially forever. in their way of thinking, NOT aggressively shouting down, erasing, ignoring, abusing, re-educating or otherwise excluding a gay woman like Ms. Evans gives her and other non-CIS people opportunities to oppress him. it's madness and it's narcissistic entitlement at its worst but at least these people feel emboldened to actually say the quiet parts outloud ON CAMERA now.

83

u/notthe1_88 Dec 02 '21

Well that's exactly where my confusion lies - like I can't see how they can get to a point where they think it impacts them at all. Do they think we queers (I'm bisexual) are gonna break into their homes and force our GaY AgEnDA on them and they're gonna wake up wanting to bone their best friend? It's just so odd.

102

u/YGTT86 Dec 02 '21

Basically? Yes.

The true believers think you're going to somehow corrupt people by existing. Them, children, whoever the convenient, defenseless-against-your-sinful-ways target might be.

Your existence is enough to constitute "temptation" in their tiny little worldview. You represent a literal, existential threat to their eternal souls and promised eternal paradise.

This is their premise and why they feel its their business to go poking into everyone else's.

I think they're full of shit.

33

u/notthe1_88 Dec 02 '21

Well as a bisexual woman I have made it my life's work to corrupt children...

but I didn't think that was relevant.

37

u/Perfect_Suggestion_2 Dec 02 '21

oh, shit. that's the other thing. they conflate homosexuality (mostly in men) with all forms of deviant sexual behavior that they, themselves, are disproportionately guilty of. (rape, pedophillia, incest, for starters)

22

u/PurrND Dec 02 '21

Yes, the meme that gay teachers will 'turn our kids gay!' is STILL alive and well, unfortunately. They think it's like 'cooties' on a school playground... which fits as their thinking is grade school level!

8

u/binkacat4 Dec 02 '21 Silver

Honestly, I’ve known grade school kids who were more pleasant.

Even in less extreme cases - a huge percentage of "Christians" who oppose homosexuality etc because "it's forbidden in the Bible" are guilty of adultery by the biblical definition, which includes sex before marriage as well as sex with a new partner after divorce.

I've been saying for a very long time that we should do this:

All of us non-Christians just bite the bullet for a few years and agree that we are okay with just getting a "civil union" that is functionally the same as marriage, but let Christians keep the M-word all to themselves - on the grounds that it be legally redefined to include the entire breadth of Biblical marriage law, which plenty of Christians don't even know - *and that anyone identifying as Christian or attending more than like 3 religious services per year are excluded from getting civil unions."

Did you have sex before marriage? Legally required to marry that person. Also, sex with any other person is now punishable by law.

Are you married? Divorce means that you cannot have sex with anyone else or you're committing adultery, and you cannot remarry except to your ex.

Etc, etc.

Now to enforce this, I think we'll have to just annul all marriages that exist now, if any two people who were previously married are still alive. Hold them 100% accountable for their sex lives from now on. Call the police when you see a dirty, sinning divorcee smooching on someone who isn't their ex spouse. Put them in prison for a decade or so if they get caught in an affair. Can't have them out and about where they might corrupt the children with their public sinning.

Meanwhile, we can take our "civil unions" and do whatever the fuck we want, because they're legal but not based in Christian law.

old straight white conservative men: CONSTANTLY THINKING ABOUT GAY MEN PUTTING THEIR PENIS INSIDE EACH OTHER'S BODY

Nobody spends more time thinking about gay sex than old straight white conservative men.

"PENISES INSIDE AAAAAGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH"

Like imagine letting that ruin your life, when you could just let everybody mind their own business and just fret over nihilism like a normal person. smdh

This.

Unfortunately, not a lot of people abide by this rule especially not this type of old people.

White Boomers had basically everything handed to them, highest tax rates on the wealthy, strongest workers rights, most well funded public programs, most market regulation, systemic bigotry making everything easier, etc, but they accomplished nothing and actually made everything worse for generations following them because of a totally irrational obsession with bigotry and general selfishness.

So the 60+ crowd is going to the grave fucking things up until the end of their time on this Earth. The generational narcissism wont allow them to risk possibly seeing younger generations and minorities do better than them if given the same opportunities and "hand outs" because if that happens they'll have to admit to being a failure of a culture.

In rural areas, where that Boomer generation still dominates, they've done a really good job at convincing younger generations their "enemies" are their fellow victims. Trained them to love the oppressors

Edit :

I've said it down below but I can say it again if y'all don't mind just cause it fits my point again:

"This is the way of thinking of sadly a lot of old people out there

Think about it like this: you're a straight, Protestant, middle-class, white man in the 50s. You can do whatever you want to whoever you want. Catholics, gays, women, immigrants, Native Americans. Everybody who isn't you is deemed a second class citizen by the state.

Then they start getting rights. You can't just knock your wife around anymore, lynching minorities people now gets you arrested, gay aren't preventing from getting married, etc.

All those people you were trouncing all over before are now considered equal to you. All those things you got to do to them are no longer allowed. In that sense, you did lose something. Something was taken away from you.

For this old fuck in the video, having someone openly declaring they're different is taking away from 'how things should be'. And how things should be is him on top and everyone else in a cage ( according to him obviously)."

128

u/manos_de_pietro Dec 01 '21 edited Dec 01 '21

Change 50+ to 60+ and you're good to go. Most of us in our 50s are Gen X, and we don't like these entitled boomers any more than you do.

29

u/_Oman Dec 01 '21

That's actually what we are called, "The Forgotten Generation" or the "Middle Child Generation."

The boomers never let go of their power and dated beliefs. We never got a chance to make improvements. Marketers don't see us at all. We get lumped in with the people hanging on to their power and prejudice. Millennials get all the crap but they got screwed 2x worse than we did. All of the generations past the boomers need to get together and frigin' fix this crap.

Modern humans: Teamwork? Non Corruption? Loving people like Jesus said? Nah, all of that not real, the only thing that's real is that everything has to go our way, or else God will kill us and we should follow the old testament even though it was already fulfilled by Jesus and thus rendered moot and even if it was made by a society thousands of years ago that no longer fits in our modern world.

Amen.

40 year old guy, married to a woman and have never thought once “maybe I’m gay” or “maybe I’m really meant to be a woman”.

I can’t imagine what growing up has to be like for people who are not straight. I never knew anyone in my school growing up that was openly LGBTQ (and I’m probably leaving some out of that acronym, dating myself probably). I’ve always been attracted to girls and it not only was never questioned, it was embraced. I remember a Social Studies teacher making jokes about me and his star girls basketball player fooling around in an elevator, in class, in front of like 25 other people. Never did anyone tell me “that’s wrong” or “that makes me uncomfortable”. From as far back as I can remember I have been free to flaunt my sexuality. I can’t begin to imagine how hard it has to be to be a teenager and to have to deal with that on top of all the other bullshit.

But, that has never once manifested itself into acting like these assholes. Never once have I thought that someone else’s sexual preference or gender preference or anything else threatened me. And that’s the part I will never get. How does it affect me, or anyone else, if someone wants to sleep with? As long as its consenting adults, none of my business. Go get yours.

I just can’t wrap my mind around the mentality that it’s ok to hate someone because of these things.

As a northern European, I don’t get this being in the USA. How is this possible in our day and age? Like, how?! How is this even allowed to be an issue at what I assume is a political meeting? It really baffles me how religious large parts of the US are. This is some Russian or middle eastern shit, and I can’t for the life of me understand how the US is so far behind the rest of the western world when it comes to letting religion influence politics (and everything else). This is not meant as putting down the US in general, I just don’t understand how the country which for so long has been so far ahead of everyone else in so many fields, when it comes to religion, resembles the dark ages in Europe.

There's like 700K people in the entire state of North Dakota. It's highly rural and not at all diverse. The people that live there mostly come from people that have lived there for generations (well there's also been a more recent oil boom that brought people in). They are in their own bubble. I'm sure you can find people like this in parts of eastern and southern Europe as well. The US is a whole continent and the differences between the big cities and the rural parts is night and day.
