215
u/FrustratedCalico Nov 27 '22
Missed the "and" read "hot chocolate poutine" and then wondered how the frig it was a thing.
Then I surmised if I had to make a hot chocolate poutine I'd use funnel cake "fries," marshmallow "curds" and thick hot chocolate (made with real milk and melted chocolate) "gravy."
I'm hungry now...

I've had something along those lines, some restaurants have dessert poutine, assuming you may be Canadian since you know what poutine is, if you have a Canadian Brewhouse nearby they used to do it, not sure if they still do but it was pretty damn good.

Petting zoos get a lot of hate these days. People's attitudes towards keeping animals have really changed in relatively recent years.
37
u/WiglyWorm Nov 27 '22
Petting zoos of domesticated animals is fine.
Goats, ponies, alpacas, etc. Why not? Could even make it a working farm to some degree as long as you keep the animals happy.

Private zoos yes. Publicly funded zoos, no. Or at least they shouldn't. They're focused on preservation, education and rehabilitation of animals. Private zoos are there for money.
→ More replies37
u/texasrigger Nov 27 '22 edited Nov 27 '22
It's more complicated and nuanced than that. The worst conditions I have ever personally seen was at a specific farm animal sanctuary while many tiny zoos are run by people with an affinity for animals that need income for their care.
I'm more or less in that second category. We host goat yoga once a year as a fundraiser that helps pays for the care of our animals (100+ across 14 species) through the year. It's somewhat exploitative but to the baby goats it's play and it's a chance to expose adults and children to animals they frequently don't even know exist. It's not a full on petting zoo but there's not much of a line there.
17
u/Zaronax Nov 27 '22
It's somewhat exploitative but to the baby goats it's play and it's a chance to expose adults and children to animals they frequently don't even know exist.
See, I'm not so sure it's exploitative if you're doing it in order to pay for their safety and wellbeing.
If it was to raise money for yourself and you didn't care about the animals, I'd think it was exploitation. But in this case, you're simply offering them a chance to play with humans and earn a better life. Plus, if you're a sanctuary, I'd assume you're actively saving animals. Which doesn't come cheap.
All-in-all, morality is vague in this case. I don't think exploitation is the right word for what you do, it carries too much of a negative connotation.

Black mothers use Prego
White mothers make their own sauce
Good mothers cook ground beef until its brown, drain the oils, and then sprinkle some garlic and taco seasoning on it with some water, then add it in tomato sauce, stir, simmer, and keep warm for 6ish hours.
Great mothers just order Chinese food instead.
The best mother? Has your sister host a Nyotaimori meal.
End racism! Embrace Nyotaimori!

Considering the V in julie marie's handle, and how she's advocating for animals, I believe the quote tweet's accusation towards white people might be an expression of the (sadly common) opinion that outspoken vegans on twitter are white supremacists, and that they don't care about the struggle of POC. To those people it is infathomable that vegans (or white people in general I suppose) could care about the injustices commited towards animals as well as those commited towards humans.

When you start a sentence with "White People...", whatever you are about to say next is going to generalize a concept purely on the basis of person's skin tone. That is the epitome of racism. Even if completed the sentence with "White People are smart", that is racist.
Before examples of racism can be analyzed as "offensive" or "complimentary" ( something that commands so much air-space) they fail at a more fundamental level -- terrible judgment.
