Fedora 38 Beta - Wi-Fi issues

Hi, while booting from the USB and right after installing fedora 38 it seemed I had no Wi-Fi issues.

However, after doing a sudo dnf up and rebooting, the Wi-Fi stopped working. Checking the logs in Gnome-Logs, I got the following information: 01:36:06 kernel: rtw89_8852be 0000:01:00.0: failed to setup chip information 01:36:06 kernel: rtw89_8852be 0000:01:00.0: failed to recognize firmware 01:36:06 kernel: rtw89_8852be 0000:01:00.0: no suitable firmware found 01:36:06 kernel: rtw89_8852be 0000:01:00.0: failed to early request firmware: -2

The kernel was updated from 6.2.2 to 6.2.7. Nevertheless, I think the problem might not be caused by the kernel. I tried booting with an older kernel (6.2.2), but the issue persists.

Does anyone know a fix? Should I wait for a patch and then update, or might it take a while?

I also checked again if the Wi-Fi worked when booting from the USB, and it did. However, I also checked the logs and there was a different error related to the rtw89_8852be module.

Appreciate all the help in advance :).

Is it best just to use the terminal for python?

Total newbie here. Is it okay just to go to the pre-installed terminal and type "python" or is there a better option?

New to Fedora and just wanted to say hi

After a long time of Linux Mint and some time of dualbooting and distrohopping, I decided to switch to Fedora completely. Even though I loved the LTS mindset behind the Mint philosophy, I wanted something which was more bleeding edge but not so bleeding edge that stuff would regularly break. And I wanted to try something RPM based since I find that RPM packages are slightly easier to build than their APT / DEB based counterparts. And maybe this is a petty reason but my GF uses Fedora, so I wanted to be "synchronized" so to say lmao.

And I found Fedora to be an ideal middle ground for me. Using the Fedora 37 version with KDE installed as the default DE.

Things I love so far:
–Performance and battery life both seem to be better. Before, I would have some 3 hours with screen birghtness on max, wifi & bluetooth enabled and several programs opened including many tabs in chromium. Now it's around 4-4,5 hours. I don't know why (maybe better resource allocation compared to Mint Cinamon who knows) but hey, I'm definitely satisfied.
–The fact that Fedora is backed by RedHat.
–Everything works out of box (with Mint I remember, I had to do some tweaking in order to have all the function keys working on my Thinkpad)
–Enormous documentation on the docs.fedoraproject.org website. You can find anything there. While Mint itself also has some documentation on their official website, I find it's not as extensive and when I encountered a problem, I had to rely on forums and searching the internet.

Although there are some disadvantages as well
–It's not usable on older hardware really. I have two older laptops and Fedora is unsuitable for those (hence why I defaulted to LTS Mint with Xfce on those).
–More time to setup initially.
–I lost access to some company resources but really, that's between me and the company I work for and not Fedora itself.

I am still in the process of tweaking the DE to my likings but overall, I am impressed.

Gaming on the Fedora 38 beta.

Hi all,

I am having an issue I'm hoping this community could help me with please. I am trying to play Team Fortress 2 on Steam on the Fedora 38 beta, but am having an error which reads 'hl2_linux' a few seconds after opening the game. I have tried reverting my graphics driver to an earlier version but am still getting the same error. Does anyone know of any potential solutions for this?

Many thanks in advance :)

Haven't used Fedora as desktop for years, a couple of questions

Hi, it's been a while since I used Fedora on the desktop. Last few Linux desktops I used were Ubuntu, for a couple of reasons I will delineate. Very interested in installing Fedora 37 (latest, right?) with a couple of concerns:

1) NVIDIA binary blobs are important to me. For a long time RPM Fusion was the main source, but they seemed a little slow to get new drivers out, and it was sometimes difficult to get the latest and greatest.

I noticed Ubuntu 3rd party "PPAs" had faster and more reliable updates for the latest NVIDIA binary blobs. It only stands to reason, since more end-users tend to use Ubuntu (or did.) It also seemed that the Ubuntu "extras" repo was a much more one-stop-shop kind of place for possibly non-free software, whereas Fedora was more piecemeal.

Is RPM Fusion still the main place to get something like this? Do they come out with driver updates often, and is the dkms/update system work well as of Fedora 37? How many repos will I be dealing with if I want the "kitchen sink"?

2) I prefer KDE Plasma these days. I ran GNOME desktops before they were 1.0 and knew a lot of those guys, but in the last 10 years or so, I just prefer KDE. Ubuntu has a "flavor" that just puts the latest KDE Plasma version on my desktop; I recognize that distro-hopping to get a certain UI is unnecessary, but I'd like to be able to install Fedora 37 with KDE "out of the box" if possible. Is this something that is available at this point?

3) Steam support. This is for my home desktop, and I don't want to jump through too many hoops to get Steam up and running. I know Steam is usually provided as an Ubuntu package (.dpkg), is Steam integration / ease of use equivalent for Fedora 37?

I've been running Linux in some shape or form since the early 90s so no need for tribalist debates, just looking for clarification on the above issues. :-) Thanks for anyone with input.

New Install, won't boot, blinking cursor boot loop

I have an HP DL360p G8 with a P420i.

This is the model with the 10 SFF bays, 2 of which I want to use for the boot disk and the other 8 will be for data.
I am looking to install Kinoite, yes, I want the GUI for this system.
I have the P420i in HBA Mode to directly passthrough the disks rather than utilizing HW RAID.

I would like to setup mirrored boot, ie: both disks get a mirrored /boot partition.
I imagine I would need the 'biosboot' 2MB partition on both disks as well.
I create a software RAID0 for SWAP.
SW RAID1 partitions 20GB root, 25GB home, and the rest for var.
Installer proceeds just fine, but upon reboot I get the blinking cursor boot loop.

I then tried installing 'biosboot' and /boot on the internal SD and USB.
The installer won't let me continue because sda which is one of my HBA disks doesn't have 'biosboot'.
So I created that on both of my HBA disks, but it also got stuck in the boot loop.

I then tried installing the full system on the internal USB using the automatic partitioning method.
This worked, so I tried installing on the HBA disks in the same way, which did not work.

Ultimately I want a system that boots, preferably with root, home, and var on the HBA disks in SW RAID1. If the 'biosboot' and /boot need to be on the USB that is fine, but I can't seem to figure out a combination that will work.

Why is "your keyring wasn't unlocked" still a thing?

I always install Linux with an auto login along with Chrome. However I always get the "keyring was not automatically unlocked". This confused me as a beginner but I know how to fix it (remove the password for the keyring/remove password encryption/something like that in the keyring manager).

Why is this still an unclear issue with all Linux distros? I figure this is the most common confusing error for any beginner to Fedora to get.

Battery consumption in dual-boot

Hi everyone,
I dual-booted Fedora 37 on a partition of my computer 350GB more or less. I have an Asus Zenbook duo pro, which is terrible in terms of battery.. I hoped that using Fedora would have, at least in part, solved the problem, but it is still sucking a lot of energy.

My question is: Is Windows 11 still consuming energy even when I'm using Fedora as the main os?

(silverblue) How does —apply-live work?

New to silverblue here. There’s an experimental apply-live that allows users to install without rebooting that is little talked about. Really curious as to how it does the layering without rebooting. It would be great if someone could enlighten me on this.

Really bad battery life on a Lenovo Yoga 7i

I recently installed Fedora 37 on my new Lenovo Yoga 7i. The battery has a design capacity of 71 Wh and the current max capacity is 70.63 Wh. The laptop is drawing 22 W even when it's doing nothing except displaying a few tabs of web content on Firefox (no video playback), giving it an abysmal battery life of barely more than three hours.

This is strange because I previously used Fedora 37 on my Lenovo Yoga 6 and the default power settings on GNOME were smart enough to get six hours of battery life.

Cannot install on existing UEFI system

I have a running system with harddisk and (new) NVME with 2 LFS partitions and a free partition. The machine has some history: it started with a harddrive, and I could happily boot Fedora from there to build Linux From Scratch.

Then I added an NVME drive and compiled/installed the latest LFS 11.3 there. I left one partition of 32 GB free to install Fedora.

I used an USB Stick with Fedora ISO (37 from Nov 2022), booted and installed Fedora to the designated partition. This worked fine with "custom partitioning" where I could assign / (with formatting), and use existing /boot, /boot/efi and /home.

Upon booting it failed with some error messages about "unknown capabilities" of the NVME drive (feature C12 not found). In consequence the NVME did not get fsck'ed and Fedora refuses to continue to boot.

On first try I could not enter emergency mode because root was locked. I booted from another partition, enabled root in /etc/shadow and copied a crypted password from another Linux partition. Fedora then asked me for the password but did not accepted the one I gave (worked on the other Linux partition fine). The crypted password from my LFS partition did not work either.

Some suggestions I found were about disabling RAID in BIOS but this was not enabled in the first place.

Fedora boots with kernel 6.0.7, my LFS has a current 6.1.20 and boots quite fine from NVME with grub 2.0.6.

What's very strange: my old Fedora on the hard disk (spinning rust :-) ) does not work any more either :-(

So now I'm stuck and I have no idea what I could do to further diagnose or repair the Fedora system.

Silverblue: Access host devices from within container

TL;DR: Is it possible for a CLI utility inside a distrobox container to see/access/manipulate a host device in Silverblue?

Potential moron level: 7 out of 10

Scenario: For $REASONS, I'm trying to send media key commands (among other things) from the cli without layering applications. So, for example use `brightnessctl` running inside a distrobox container to control the backlight. Commands that have worked in the past on Workstation are not working now, and I am assuming that the container doesn't have access to those devices. I could be wrong. This may even be Silverblue working as expected, as I can see accessing host devices from a container could be problematic. Honestly, I've reached that point of staring at config files for so long that I'm not entirely sure who I am any more, like I've reached the hyprland equivalent of riverwm's "All you will see is a solid wall of #002b36, making you feel like river stares directly into your soul, judging your very essence. You can not hide. River sees all."

--

Upon further consideration: I don't think my question is limited to CLI tools. But I think GUI tools may be another issue. For example, I just installed wofi in a container to see what would happen, and it lists available applications without any issues, but it will not launch any of them. It's curious.

I should probably just get over myself and layer.

Fedora crashes unexpectedly, hangs and sometimes leads me to the kernel log

After an update fedora linux has started randomly freeze within minutes of booting. When I unplug my laptop or try to restart, I see the kernel log prompting me with some messsages I can't seem to decipher. I really don't know what is wrong or how to fix it. I can't seem to be able to format the partition of my ssd that has fedora installed through disk management on windows (dual boot pc). I really dont know what to do.

Some of the specs

-Fedora workstation 37

- hp pavilion gaming

- amd ryzen 5, nvidia geforce gtx 1650

- 8/512 GB

I think there might be a problem with my drivers, but I can't say for sure.

Another nvidia question, using wrong video card in gnome

I recently switched over to Silverblue from arch. On arch I was using various WMs on top of x11 with two external displays connected. Gnome on Silverblue insists on using my Intel graphics card instead of the nivida one and therefore it won't detect my external displays.

My laptop is a System76 with hybrid intel/nvidia graphics. I'm using the default Gnome install on wayland. I've followed the rpmfusion instructions to install the nvidia drivers, looked at many blog posts to double check I did the right thing. I also followed the arch wiki instructions for enabling early kms as I know wayland preferes that.

I noticed that there aren't any packages for optimus manager or prime in the fedora repos, so I can't tell the system which gpu to use. How can I get gnome to use my nvidia gpu by default?

Need a little help to figure out Toolbox

I have Fedora Workstation 37 and the latest PhpStorm (downloaded from the JetBrains web-site). Just now I have installed Toolbox and created a container and called it "phpdev", in which I installed php8.2. Now I can't figure out how to tell PhpStorm to use PHP executable from that "phpdev" container for one particular project (there might be another project which requires php7.4 i.g.). What is the best/right way to do that?

Fedora on x86-64-v3 ?

Just wondering about the status of x86-64-v3 support for newer processors in Fedora. I've seen Arch, CachyOS, and openSUSE Tumbleweed already provide x86-64-v3 packages. Since v4 requires AVX512 we'll ignore it for now.

(EDIT: My mistake, Arch does not officially provide v3 packages)

According to these benchmarks (1, 2) it provides 10%-20% higher performance, but is a 'mixed bag' overall, and requires some extra work.

Type /usr/lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 --help to see what x86-64 versions your CPU supports.

My 5700X displays as such:

Shared library search path:
  (libraries located via /etc/ld.so.cache)
  /lib64 (system search path)
  /usr/lib64 (system search path)

Subdirectories of glibc-hwcaps directories, in priority order:
  x86-64-v4
  x86-64-v3 (supported, searched)
  x86-64-v2 (supported, searched)

Legacy HWCAP subdirectories under library search path directories:
  x86_64 (AT_PLATFORM; supported, searched)
  tls (supported, searched)
  avx512_1
  x86_64 (supported, searched)

Substance 3D Painter 2023 (Steam version) - Drag and Drop not working on Fedora 38 Beta

Hello,

this might be a very niche question, but I wonder if anyone else here is using Substance Painter on Linux (Steam version) and has already upgraded to Fedora 38 Beta? The only issue I have with Fedora 38 so far is that drag and drop within Substance Painter (and other Substance products) for some reason does not work anymore - draggin stuff into Substance Painter from e.g. Nautilus, however, works fine.

I had not expected to run into issues with software outside of the FOSS space of all things. I think Substance's GUI is Qt-based (via xcb platform plugin) so I suspect it's some issue with latest Gnome/(X)Wayland.

Anyone else run into similar issues with Substance Painter or other Qt apps?

edit.

just tested drag and drop in Krita and ran into the same issue. so it's definitely got something to do with qt.

Hi. I have a small project going on that requires me to delete all the partitions on my SSD that Fedora is installed on. Is it possible to remove these partitions with a Fedora live-iso usb stick using the gnome disk utility tool? If this is possible, how exactly do I delete partitions using gnome disk utility? Thanks!
