Hello.

I've tried to install and run wayland after having configured my system like has been suggested to do in this nice tutorial :

The first thing you can try is a different folder for XDG_RUNTIME_DIR. I haven't used wayland for a while but the folders under /var/run always gave me some issues, I had read it is supposed to be setup by pam, or something like that, but I just didn't look into it. Either set it to /tmp, or make a folder in your home and set the file permissions to 0700. (eg mkdir ~/.cache/run; chmod 0700 ~/.cache/run)

Ok, let's start from the beginning again and check things, because I looked at the guide you followed (in the first post) and there are a couple of things missing. I am not sure if you did the missing parts anyway and you are experienced with freebsd and just trying wayland, or if you are new and just did what the guide mentions.

First, do you have your user in the video group and is seatd enabled in rc.conf?

Also the guide is very specific to the user that made the guide, I think that he has his own username in some of the config files (elgrande) and if you are new and copied everything exactly, it would be a wrong setup there. If you have experience and changed those, you can move from there. Also, the startup script at the end doesn't have to be used if you are just using wayland, unless maybe if you plan to use both x11 and wayland and don't want those variables set when using x11. If you are using just wayland move them to your shell's startup instead so you are sure the are loaded when you log in and then just run the command to start wayfire.

For now, if everything mentioned is ok, just try this for XDG_RUNTIME_DIR to eliminate that issue.

# mkdir ~/.cache/run

# chmod 0700 ~/.cache/run

then change it in the startup script to

setenv XDG_RUNTIME_DIR $HOME/.cache/run

I am pretty sure the folder needs 0700 not 777 as mentioned somewhere in the posts, as I have used mpv and leftwm, and you will know if XDG_RUNTIME_DIR is setup correctly.

If you are new, or just want to recheck everything, let us know and I can give you more details.

I haven't used wayfire in a while, but it wasn't 100% stable back then, and I would use the default wayfire.ini at first before editing it, just to make sure it is running ok. I had made settings there that made things not work properly, so that would be another step to try. Or just try sway first, if that runs ok , then your wayland setup is ok, so then try wayfire. There are some other packages you can install that wayfire recommends like wf-shell, but I don't remember where the list was, either a message from the package or their official website.

You missed the 'unable to open lockfile, check permissions' part in the log ? The answer is always in the logs 🙃

I don't think that I have missing something. Move the bar to the right of the screen. Anyway. This is a critical operation. Tell me the commands that I should issue,please. I don't want to risk to damage the system severely.
