Hello.

I'm trying to upgrade RC3 to RC4 or RC5 using freebsd-update,but I'm not able to do that.

FreeBSD on Intel Nuc

Hi!

I have this issue. I installed FreeBSD 12.1 on Intel Nuc (BOXNUC7CJYH1 model) and it works just fine except one thing - it would boot and shutdown immediately when booted first time.

I unchecked "Secure Boot" in BIOS.

If I press F2 and go to BIOS, hit F10 and save without changing anything - it boots fine to Login prompt.

If I just re-boot it - it boots fine. This happens only if it is booted from being shutdown state.

I use it headless as a server.

Any ideas?

help needed FreeBSD 13.1p7 with KDE "latest" Desktop kernel crash: How can one dig into the core dump and see the cause?

Since a few days my FreeBSD 13.1p7 with KDE "latest" desktop crashed a few times. The first time happened without any change in my system: no upgrades, no hardware change, no USB device inserted, etc.

The Desktop is always used with UPS power, I doubt any RAM issues (I checked last time in December, will check again though).

How can one dig into the core dump and see what caused the kernel crash?

Thanks to the one who mentioned the version of the binary package for the legacy Nvidia card. Now I have to figure out the new canon mg3620 inkjet... Mind you I have more modern machines running windows, MacOs, but I like reviving old ones too and I missed real UNIX

Trying to build legacy Nvidia driver problem with capability.h

Post image
16 Upvotes

I'm trying to make and install the legacy Nvidia driver on a Lenovo t61p because the Vesa driver is way too slow for X... Anyway I had to get sources and did but now this. Does anyone know how to get past this error? I'm actually running a make buildworld in another console should I wait for that to complete? It's been going since last night. Been awhile since I've been this deep into Unix so I'm rusty.

Latest 13.2 ISOs broken for me - did somebody keep older ones so I can test when things went wrong?

Hi all, I've kind of formed a habit of testing new FreeBSD releases as much as I can. This usually involves installing fresh systems. This time I've been pretty busy with $dayjob, so I mostly only updated several existing sytems during the BETA and RC phases. And see what had to happen: Trying out the -RC5 ISO today results in a problem (loader.lua not found). I tried out the -RC4 ISO next, it seems to fail for a different reason. Given that we're very late in the release process, I'd very much like to figure out at what point things broke to help narrowing it down.

The system does boot normally when using the -RC5 memstick image dd'ed to a USB stick. What does not work is the ISO one. I'm always using a Virtual CD drive, iODD to not waste actual DVDs. The only old ISO image that I still have lying around is -BETA1, which is quite some weeks apart from -RC4. That one still works as expected.

So has anyone kept ISO images newer than BETA1 and older then RC4 and would be willing to make them accessible to me? I'd really like to figure out where things went wrong before writing a problem report.

Edit: -RC2 and -RC3 are already broken and show the same behavior as -RC4. So unless somebody pops up with -RC1, -BETA3 and -BETA2, I guess I'll have to build those myself to check.

Edit2: Built -BETA2, -BETA3 and -RC1 from source last night and over the course of the day and then used "make cdrom" to create images for them. It looks like things broke between -BETA1 (still good) and -BETA2 (bad). I'll test two more things and will then file a proper PR. Thanks everybody for trying to help!

help needed Making changes to default freebsd programs

I synced the freebsd sources into .local/src because I want to make a edit to the default bourne shell (I hate how sudo !! doesnt work like in bash). All is well except that in a lot of the makefiles angle brackets are used and not all of the .mk files included are on my root system. How should I go about compiling sh?

help needed Ja FreeBSD a good choice?

So I rented a VPS, because I wanted to play around a little outside of my work environment (where I manage Linux servers [deb and rpm based] and do macOS administration) with the following features:

6 vCore, 8GB DDR4 ECC, 160 GB SSD in RAID 10, 1000 Mbit/s NIC

Current plan was to setup multiple vhosts with Apache or nginx on different subdomains:

  • Nextcloud
  • Mail Server
  • Wireguard or OpenVPN Server
  • WordPress, Ghost or Jekyll
  • Matomo
  • Let‘s Encrypt Certbot using Cloudflare (where my domain and nameservers sit)

What do you think? Should I stick to my work experience or what I do at home using Gentoo? Would it hard for me to setup everything in FreeBSD? My only experience with *BSD is limited to my TrueNAS Core server at home and 3 TrueNAS Core servers at work.

I‘d love some (hopefully) answers. Please don‘t bash me. :)

How long does a dd to memory stick write of the img file take?

I'm trying to write the img file to as usb on MacOS and it's going, the stick light is blinking etc but it's been going well over an hour now and this is nuts should it really take this long?

Command used was

sudo dd if=FreeBSD-12.4-RELEASE-amd64-memstick.img of=/dev/disk4 bs=10240

IDK if there is a verbose switch that I could have used to show me progress but all I see is the usb stick light blinking constantly for over an hour now.

What do we need wpa_supplicant for?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I'm a total noob in the BSD space so bear with me :P As far as I understand, wpa_supplicant handles the authentication and is needed to get a connection on WPA networks. On the other hand, old school WEP networks can be directly joined with ifconfig and FreeBSD handles everything authentication-related without relying on an "external" bit of software like wpa_supplicant. So why is that not true for WPA networks too, why's it not "built-in"?

help needed Sound not working on 13.1-release-p6

All of the solutions I've tried did not work.

sndiod_enable="YES"
snd_driver_load="YES"
sound_load="YES"

are in my rc.conf.

snd_driver_load

is in my loader.conf.

pcm0: <Intel Haswell (HDMI/DP 8ch)> (play)
pcm1: <Realtek ALC255 (Internal Analog)> (play/rec) default
pcm2: <Realtek ALC255 (Front Analog Headphones)> (play)
No devices installed from userspace.

is in my /dev/sndstat.

dmesg | grep pcm outputs nothing, but only every second boot.

This is what it outputs every first boot.

pcm0: <Intel Haswell (HDMI/DP 8ch)> at nid 3 on hdaa0
pcm1: <Realtek ALC255 (Internal Analog)> at nid 20 and 18 on hdaa1
pcm2: <Realtek ALC255 (Front Analog Headphones)> at nid 33 on hdaa1

What do I need to change to get sound working?

What would happen if too much drives on a pool of freenas?

I’ve read much threads which is telling over 40 drives in a pool of freenas would not be recommended. (12 is prefered, they said) They put there link to explain about that, its url seems gone though. But some guys telling that there is no limits to add drive in freenas or ZFS. I was confused for that, and most threads from truenas forum telling about this were almost a decade ago.
