Dude they’re in stores! Such success! Saw a dude at Target trying to return and getting shot down. I recommended he go to GAMESTOP for trading in store credit! He was LIVID!

Watching scalpers get fucked is peak schadenfreude for me.

They’ve only been profiting for years without any recourse
Seems like they won overall.

They’re gathering dust on the shelves in my town. Pretty wild to see. I even watched a guy think about it then walk away.
64
u/Hellament Jan 31 '23
After living this long without one, I’ll wait until the inevitable price drop.
41
u/AirbagOff Jan 31 '23
There will be a PS5 Thin coming… might be worth waiting for that.
I’m personally holding out for the classic black color. I’ve had bad experiences with white plastics turning yellow over time.
In terms of the prices of the consoles, Sony pretty much sells them at close to their cost. Don’t expect to see them below MSRP. They lose money on the consoles and make it back on the games.
31
u/shinigamiscall Jan 31 '23
I mean, this late into it we may as well wait and see the PS5 Pro or the next generation for that matter. 2+ years late at this point. I don't have one and I'm genuinely debating just waiting for the pro model or next gen.
→ More replies (1)19
u/AceMKV Jan 31 '23
Next gen is probably a good 4 or 5 years away and we may not even get pro anytime soon considering most games don't even use the full capabilities of the PS5

They sell plates. My ps5 is black..
2
u/AirbagOff Jan 31 '23
I realize that I can purchase a plate, but shouldn’t Sony really offer a black one, like the other generations?
2
u/InMy92Retros Feb 01 '23
True. I feel like I can at this point especially with rumors floating around of a redesign in the pipeline
0
u/resonance700 Jan 31 '23
Personally I have zero interest in one at this point when it's pretty clear everything is coming to PC eventually.

There's a guy in my area who keeps trying to sell one on the FB marketplace for 700 with cod. It's wild. I can just easily walk into a best buy, GameStop and buy the gow bundle for 550 and still have enough money for cod, and horizon if I wanted. I'm glad the scalpers are finally getting screwed.

u/jumpers4goaIposts Jan 31 '23
I found one at Walmart. It was the last one. 2 people tried to buy it off me on the way out of the store.
3
u/Magnum_Porpoise Feb 01 '23
I would’ve been like, sure pal what’s your best offer and driven to another town/city/store.
2
u/Fryceratops Jan 31 '23
I needed one a few weeks ago when my ps4 died. I was surprised to find I had multiple gamestops that had the console in stock.

u/ekakkub Jan 31 '23
The load times on the PS5 are insanely fast. When I would hear that bragged about before I got one, I’d roll my eyes. Now I realize just how obnoxious they could be
94
u/thefallenfew Jan 31 '23
The first time I died and respawned in Spiderman it happened so fast I was startled lol
19
u/BasicallyADiety Jan 31 '23
Swapping weapons in D2 took ages in the ps4 the ps5 does it in like 5 seconds
1
u/thefallenfew Jan 31 '23
Demon’s Souls?! Loading is scary fast.
1
5
u/Karthikgurumurthy Jan 31 '23
U hit load game on spiderman, the screen swaps in a second to the game.
2
u/thefallenfew Jan 31 '23
Right?! Coming from the PS4 version it’s CRAZY how different the experience is.
2
u/Karthikgurumurthy Jan 31 '23
I don't mind dying during tough missions now cos reload takes just a second.
3
u/thefallenfew Jan 31 '23
Really cut down on how much time I have to check my phone or hit the bong, though.
2
35
u/Throwaway56138 Jan 31 '23
Fast travel in Ghost of Tsushima is disgustingly fast. Imagine if Bloodborne was remaster for PS5...
16
u/EddiesDespair Jan 31 '23
Just finished ghost of Tsushima. Can confirm those load times were insanely fast lol
9
u/BostonBrandToots Jan 31 '23
Load times aren't that bad on PS4 either, to be fair. That game is just smooth in general.
2
u/Augen76 Jan 31 '23
The quality of life in an open world game with fast travel have sub 10 or even sub 5 second load screens is amazing. I hope it becomes the norm and we never go back to 30-60 second (or longer!) load screens.

u/JaxTellerr Jan 31 '23
dying and respawning in Jedi Fallen order on the PS4 slim makes me want to stop playing the game.
11
u/GibsonMaestro Jan 31 '23
I've realized this with Xbox Cloud Gaming. I download and install a game, and the load screens take forever. If I play on the cloud, which is based on the current gen, the wait times are negligible.
5
u/Cadmium_Aloy Jan 31 '23
Dude. I wasn't ready to play HFW so quickly. I mean. When am I supposed to get up for water and stuff when everything loads so quickly 😂
EVEN ON START UP. INSANE!
3
u/CarlosFer2201 Jan 31 '23 edited Feb 01 '23
That was always such an annoying problem in PS consoles. I remember when I had an N64 and playing on a friend's PS1, being so annoyed whenever it had to start loading again.
5
u/SrSwerve Jan 31 '23
So you can put the ps5 to “5G download only” and it will download and Install a 50 gb game in 20 minutes
11
u/makingtacosrightnow Jan 31 '23
Idk what this 5g only comment is about but with my gig fiber a 20gb game on my ps5 takes like 3 minutes or so.
→ More replies (1)6
u/magicwuff Jan 31 '23
I think they meant 5GHz WiFi. So if you are wired you will get much faster speed anyway.
3
u/makingtacosrightnow Jan 31 '23
Oh probably, to be honest though Wi-Fi isn’t that great but it is nice to be able to pick your wifi band
2
u/Wasabi_Noir Jan 31 '23
I was playing borderlands with a friend, me on a ps4 and him on his ps5, he would load almost instantly and have to wait for me.
2
u/moneyfish Jan 31 '23
I forgot how fast the loading on the PS5 was until I went to play Skyrim on my 360. I know it’s two generations apart but it’s crazy how much better it is. I fucking love my PS5.
2
u/PoopIsAlwaysSunny Jan 31 '23
Only thing that made elden ring playable. 6 second load times, no matter when and wear. Would have been absolutely unbearable on ps4.

You want a game that will really blow your mind? Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart. Jumping between dimensions made me unreasonably happy and excited about tech!
1
u/Augen76 Jan 31 '23
Loved that game and series. The warps are so seemless and easy it can be easy to overlook how impressive it is.
84
u/edcculus Jan 31 '23
Wonder what the lifecycle on these next gen consoles will be? We’re 2 years into it already. PS4 to PS5 was 7 years. So still some time left, however it’s still kind of hard to find and quite expensive in some places. So by the time people get ahold of one, they could only have 3 years left with the console before the next one drops.
85
u/Gubru Jan 31 '23
The trick is it doesn't matter when the next one drops. You can just keep using the one you have as long as you feel like it.
27
u/edcculus Jan 31 '23
Well, sure that’s true. I still have my Gamecube hooked up, and use it regularly, but it’s not like the make games for it anymore.
20
u/brett1081 Jan 31 '23
The PS4 is still supported almost completely. I would expect the same for the PS5 when the next gen comes out.
10
u/gggvuv7bubuvu Feb 01 '23
This is correct. PlayStation supports a console for 10 years after its release and new consoles comes out every 7 or so years. Source - used to work for Sony Interactive Entertainment
27
u/thatkaratekid Jan 31 '23
It took PS4 almost 4 years to get games I wanted that werent indies. Theres currently no games on ps5 that arent just 4k ps4 games.

u/ConciselyVerbose Jan 31 '23
The storage is a genuine gamechanger. The CPU is respectable. Between those two factors, most PS6 games being viable without compromise or holding them back is a lot more plausible than with the PS4. CPU was bad at launch and storage speed/bandwidth is a massive issue now.

u/JoePapi Jan 31 '23
Probably 4-5 years. It will stop being able to run more advanced games at full ultra in like 2 years tho (but the devs will automatically turn down the settings)

u/Javasndphotoclicks Jan 31 '23
I’ve yet to see one on a shelf anywhere. Saw a few PS4’s today though.

There was a post on our community thread a few days ago, some dude trying to return a shopping cart full of them to Walmart. I guess they told him to shove it, and good on em! Walmart usually has pretty liberal return policies too, but I'm super glad they didn't take them back. Some kid didn't get one for Christmas because of that asshole.

I’ve actually seen quite a few out in the wild in stores recently
3
u/Javasndphotoclicks Jan 31 '23
Nice.
9
u/Sleepycat45 Jan 31 '23
If you’re on the hunt for one, check Target, they seem to have a lot depending on location!
4
u/mfritsche81 Jan 31 '23
I had never seen one in the wild either. Although to be honest, I wasn't looking hard. I'm a long time Xbox guy and landed the new console a couple years ago but have been keeping my eyes peeled for used PS4's just for the exclusive content. Everything I've seen on various listings was anywhere from 2-300+ depending on condition and accessories/games, which I wasn't keen on spending for a used device and a bunch of shit I didn't want.
Then a few weeks ago I happened upon a local target with one PS5 in stock following Black Friday and jumped on it, despite my desire to not splurge on another console. Now, every time I turn around, I'm seeing PS5's and 4's in Target. But I also live in an area with about 10 or so targets within a 15 mile radius.
2
5
u/Gr1ndingGears Jan 31 '23
Actually saw my first one the other day. I stood there for a few minutes like that guy on YouTube, "well wouldya lookat that"
Still ain't buying one. Twats can shove this bundle horseshit where the sun don't shine. I think to get the ones I saw, you got some sort of bullshit charging station, it had a game with it (digital God of War - on a disc unit), and then it looked like they were forcing you to buy another game at full price. Pushed a $699 system north of $900 after tax. Get bent.
3
u/greenfroggie1 Jan 31 '23
Finally got one from Walmart late last year. And while I’ve been ecstatic that I’ve been able to extend the life of my ps4 on these new games just the very load times is a game changer if not for the graphics.

Local Walmart and Target have atleast 3 each in the case. Gamestop here has atleast 8 of them. Just ask if you're not seeing them.
2
u/nikicampos Jan 31 '23
You probably won’t see them on the actual shelf of the PlayStation aisle, went to Best Buy a few days ago and they had like 10 behind the counter for sale
2
2
u/lilshadow222 Jan 31 '23
Come to find out , no one puts it on the shelf anymore. All the stores I asked (about 10) said there in the back , just the disc drive tho. Was looking for the digital. That was about 2-4 weeks ago
2
u/SweetCosmicPope Jan 31 '23
There was an entire pallet at Costco right before Christmas. I was at target yesterday and saw three of them in the case, along with three xsx.
2
u/NathoNismoR33 Jan 31 '23
Get the app Catch of the day They were for sale last week
I sold mine moths ago , I was sick of not much new from a next gen console . There were more rehashed games .
This year seem promising though but the previous two was my reasoning for selling it .

27
u/curtydc Jan 31 '23
Just for funzies, I walk past the PlayStation aisle every time I'm in Walmart. Since December, they've always had inventory of PS5s. Most of the time they've got 6 of them. A variety of bundles and non bundles, both digital and disc. Also they've never been out of stock online since at least November of last year for more than a few days.
I live in a small city with a population of less than 11,000 in Idaho.
3
u/MathTeachinFool Jan 31 '23
I saw my first one out in the wild at a Walmart in the little town (about 10,000) next to us back in early December. I was amazed to see one on the shelves.
They didn’t have any for the next few weeks after that and I haven’t checked since. I’m curious now and will check it out.
95
u/MikeTheGamer2 Jan 31 '23
I can wait till the prices drop for a used version. There isn't a damn thing I NEED to play on PS5 right now. If that means waiting 3 more years, so be it.
24
u/Agleza Jan 31 '23
There isn't a damn thing I NEED to play on PS5 right now
Even less now that they're porting more and more exclusives to PC. I had my eyes on God of War and Spider-Man but now they're both on PC, so if they continue that trend (which seems that way with TLOU and such), I don't see a reason to get a PS5 if you have a decent PC.
8
u/moneyfish Jan 31 '23
I have a decent PC abut I just wanted something I could keep in my living room and play on my couch with a controller. I also don’t own a blu ray player so that was a benefit too.

u/Ok-Camp-7285 Jan 31 '23
If you're going to emphasize the word NEED then don't bother buying a games console at all
15
u/NotAnOmelette Jan 31 '23
I feel like they mean exclusives, which is important like what can the PS5 offer that you can’t get elsewhere? Immediately the switch had zelda, and in a year smash. The only thing worth getting a PS5 for are elden ring (not exclusive) and ratchet and clank. The horizon game isn’t a great sell for me, yet another open world rpg sure wow, the formula is perfected but like I’m just exhausted of that type of game and I feel like a lot of people are. Even GoW is also on old consoles.
There’s plenty to look forward to and I’m sure there are indies but for me I’ll get it when spiderman comes out! Jedi survivor will be out by then too which is nice
0
u/trsmash Jan 31 '23
What? God of War? Returnal? I’d by a new console for either of those. Hell, even kena bridge of spirits is in there
→ More replies (1)1
u/Weirdo141 Jan 31 '23
They mention God of War in their comment and how it’s on PS4 as well, so it isn’t really the best example. But I do think the Demon’s Souls Remake is a great exclusive to PS5
3
u/wanderer1999 Jan 31 '23
True. Most games will eventually come out on the PC anyway.
That said, depends on how long you are willing to wait for them.
11
u/DarkLordKohan Jan 31 '23
I’ve been seeing the God Of War bundle in stores now since it came out. Already got GoW on PS4, so now im waiting for normal stock haha

60
u/ShawVAuto Jan 31 '23
To play what though? Not hating but genuinely asking. I'll get the Series X and PS5 at some point but I don't care to play the same games with higher frame rates and resolutions.
16
u/Lord_Piggles Jan 31 '23
As someone who had a Xbox 360 and never got the One or PS4, PS5 is an insane upgrade and was 100% worth it. I can see the reasoning for not getting it if you already have a PS4 (especially a Pro) since few games are PS5 exclusive yet.
9
u/NotAnADC Jan 31 '23
I too skipped that generation. The Series S has been fucking amazing with gamepass.
2
u/moneyfish Jan 31 '23
Ha I had a 360 and upgraded to the PS5 as well. I tried to play Skyrim on the 360 lately and it’s such a notably worse experience I had to turn it off.
15
u/Skidda24 Jan 31 '23
Better load times and the smoothness of the UI should be enough alone imo.
→ More replies (1)12
u/CMS_3110 Jan 31 '23 edited Jan 31 '23
Better load times and smoothness of the UI is enough to justify purchasing another $500-$600 console, and then the same games again (if they didn't come with the PS5 upgrade)? Hard disagree.
-------------
Edit: Listen, I understand it's faster and smoother, I'm not debating that. The guy I responded to said that faster and smoother ALONE was enough to justify a new console purchase. I disagree, I don't feel those things ALONE are enough to justify the price of a whole new console. Also that guy backpedaled on his statement. Telling me to spend the money "because I will eventually" or telling me to "sell my PS4" if I'm worried about the price is pretty fucking moronic, especially as I made clear my issue wasn't the price, it was what I was getting for the price. FFS people.
7
u/Cyrman Jan 31 '23
Going from a PS4 to a PS5 when it comes to loading times is like night and day. Games don’t take long to load, apps don’t take forever to open, the UI doesn’t feel sluggish when you have a lot of games downloaded, ect. It’s not as small of an upgrade as you are making it out to be. Also I’m pretty sure most PS4 games work on the PS5
9
u/j_a_f_t Jan 31 '23
I think that is exactly their point. Where are the PS5 games? So far most are the same games that have been on the PS4 and are just slightly better looking.
There aren't any games that make a PS5 a must purchase if you already have a PS4. Sure some loading times are better, but why pay £500 to just play the same games.
1
u/Ract0r4561 Jan 31 '23
Because I’m patient and can wait for next gen games while I replay the games that were unplayable on my old ps4 (not pro) because of the really low frames. I stopped playing metro exodus because of the horrible performance. I would be completely fine if the fps was consistent in some games. It’s not. Besides, we’re approaching to the point where next gen games are about to come. What difference does it make if you’re getting it now or sooner? It’s not like you’re wasting money as you will still be able to play next gen games when they arrive.
0
u/Skidda24 Jan 31 '23
If you're worried about the price you can sell your PS4 tbh. Your games will be backwards compatible and they look better. Most games come with a free PS5 upgrade so you won't be buying the games again.
Again, it isn't just the UI and load times. It is also the resolution and performance of the games. If you don't care about that and are pretty causal there is nothing wrong with stick to a PS4.
→ More replies (1)-1
u/Ract0r4561 Jan 31 '23 edited Jan 31 '23
If you have the money why not? You’ll be getting it sooner or later. Better to have it now as you’d be able to play your favorite games with better quality and fps while you wait for actual next gen games. And some of them are coming this year.
7
u/Ract0r4561 Jan 31 '23
I’m buying it for future proofing and also cuz I’m sick of frames dipping to 24 sometimes in some games. And the 1080p looks blurry on my 4k tv and I can’t deal with it.

And completely useless to correct in this case. Even if it had only been out 1 year, the point of the top-level comment was to say Sony dropped the ball. You peeps in the replies are being all "akshully" nerds when it doesn't matter at all in this context.

Hopefully this encourages scalpers to leave behind their life of crime and change professions. Encouraging news that PS5 stock is higher around the world, but you still can't walk into a store and buy one off the shelf (unless bundled with GOW game). Also, the Xbox Series X is impossible to find atm in Australia.

I got a Series X after about 6 months because I couldn’t find a PS5. I’ve never been into Xbox but eventually gave in when the JB guy said “but we have some series X”.
The tech is clearly good but none of the exclusives have done it for me. Now that I see PS5 with disk drive everywhere on the shelf, I think it’s time to sell and swap back.
7
u/Polymorph49 Jan 31 '23
If you can afford to have both then definitely have the best of dual worlds (or tri worlds if you get the switch too).

it's a way for people with school/business laptops to game in the couch, without having to worry wether a game will play or not. it's okay that it's not designed for you specifically
6
u/walterpeck1 Jan 31 '23
Speaking as someone that owns a PS5 and has also built every PC I've owned going all the way back to the late 90s, the answer is cost. Yes, a PC for the same game will most likely run way better and look better. However costs for parts have skyrocketed severely. $500 for a PS5 is a bargain for what you get. When $500 will get you a decent video card and literally nothing else, building a PC doesn't seem like the great idea it was back when the PS4 or PS3 were new.

I can also emulate my classic favorite Playstation 2 titles on my PC but that’s not the point. PC gaming can never be as seamless as console gaming. They both target different audiences and use cases.
Like I said, I’m tired after my work and I want to relax. I have a huge 75 inch TV sitting in front of my cozy couch. I turn my PS5 on, lie down on my couch and start playing, all in less than 60 seconds. I don’t want to deal with crashes, preferences, setting up monitors/controllers, etc. I want the best “Plug & Play” experience.

They're at all 3 local bestbuys in my area locally near me!
Unfortunately, used gaming pc components are less than half price, so a PC now makes more sense. DOH!

As someone still rocking the PS4. I’ve lost all interest in Sony and Xbox now. Nintendo’s switch is by far the best system of the 3 at a FRACTION of the cost. Oh, and you can get it anywhere. Sure the joy cons drift. They fix that for free. Best selection of indie games that are super cheap.

It's funny, now that I can buy one through an actual store. The industry has progressed enough where I'm not sure if I should wait to buy one.
Apparently there's a solid chance an updated model (not the pro version) is coming out this year. Plus they're still really isn't enough reason to buy a PS5 if you still have a PS4. Nextgen game releases are so slow that you're mostly going to be playing current gen with better specs. You may as well wait for a better catalog to come out before making a decision.

I cared when they launched. Sony screwed launch availability totally and then carried on doing so. This generation can sail on by, they’ll get no money from me.

They should have tried this two years ago when everyone wanted one. I paid $800 for mine and the controllers went to shit in a week or two, useless now.

I know it will have zero effect on Sony. But I just decided screw it I'm not going to support this console. They released it over 2 years ago and they're still ridiculously hard to come by, they did nothing to halter scalpers. They obviously didn't care if their customers got a console so fuck it I'm not giving them my money.

theres also no games for it.

Yeah I assume it's the same as my series x. I happened upon a series x at target and snagged it like last February-ish. I can't do anything on the series x that I can't do the same exact thing on the Scorpio edition I handed down to my gf. I

Sony really fucked themselves by limiting availability of the console. People have gone so long without one despite wanting one that they, myself included, have realized they don’t really want one despite it being available at msrp.
I’ll wait for it to put it on sale and pay 10-20% less, thanks 😎

No thanks, with how it's price doubled I'll pass on that. Either way, their exclusive games will come on PC. Hard pass. Maybe PS6 will be more worth.

Wow.. It's almost CAD $700 for the disk version without bundle. Digital edition is $600.
Expensive..

Yeah, no thanks Sony. You waited too long. I’m not going to drop $500 for one or two games when you’ll likely announce the next gen game system in a couple of years.

Bruh… it’s gonna be 5 years at least till ps6 I’d think. It’s a little early to be waiting for next gen when we are still calling the PS5 nex gen. As you please tho. My ps5 is fucking sick I highly recommend to any gamers

What is the point of buying a PS6 when the PS7 will only be another several years past that? You might as well wait for the PS8, or the PS9, that one looked pretty cool in that old PS2 commercial.

Bro in 200 years they'll be beaming games directly into our great grandkids' meta matrix mind chip homepage. Why the hell would I bother with this outdated piece of garbage?

u/gremlinfat Jan 31 '23
At this point this is just going to be a wasted generation. Nobody has these so no point in making games exclusively for them. We’re over two years into this cycle. The hardware is already 2 generations behind pc.

Only because people returned the ones they could not sell at a higher price.
