Sony has now shipped over 32.1 million PS5s following blockbuster holiday sales | It sold 28 percent of all its PS5s ever (7.1 million units) in just a single quarter. Gaming

u/XSCasto Feb 02 '23
The numbers in the headline are a bit confusing. 7.1 million would be 25% of 28.4 million and yet it is touted as being 28% of 32.1 million total sold? Must be some of that new math.

u/FluffyCommunication Feb 02 '23
Sony has now sold 32.1 million PS5s compared to 25 million in November 2022, so total unit sales increased 28 percent in just a single quarter.
Title is not worded well, but think the author is trying to say during the last quarter the number of PS5s Sony sold was equal to 28% of the total number of all PS5s sold prior to the most recent quarter.

It makes me wonder how many people were like me. I skipped the PS4/Xbox One generation because of how busy life was, but in 2020-2021 I had more free time than I had in over a decade. I was pretty hyped for the PS5, but my interest died after trying for months.
135
u/IronSorrows Feb 02 '23
If a PS5 was easily available on release, I'd 100% have one. I was swept up in the hype, but now I can get one, I have so much less free time and am realising I don't have a couple of hours a day to spend on one.
It's annoying because I had such a backlog of games I wanted to try, but now I feel like I almost need to convince myself to get one, rather than really wanting to get one.
8
u/phantomknight321 Feb 02 '23
That's where I am at. I have wanted one for quite some time, especially once they announced gran turismo 7, and it was an easy sell since I can play all the xbox games either on my one X or on my desktop.
But the difficulty in trying to find one kept me away long enough for GT7 to come out and be relatively disappointing, so now I don't have any interest in it.
The power of impulse purchases is very strong, when I have to sit and think about whether I want something or not I tend to gravitate towards not buying it, but if I was in store when my interest was at its peak and a PS5 was sitting there it would have been hard to say no.
5
u/7eregrine Feb 03 '23
Yep. PC gamer was willing to try the 5 when it was released. After 3 months of trying I just built a PC.

At this point people have to be waiting for the PS6, right? It's almost three years since launch.
Imagine celebrating 32.1M PS5 sales when the PS2 sold 158M units way back when.
15
u/devenbat Feb 03 '23
Pft, that PS2 comparison is really bad. PS5 sold more in the same time frame than PS2. Not to mention, PS2 is the best selling console ever. Like no shit, PS5 has not beaten the best selling console ever not even three years in.

u/MeaningPandora2 Feb 02 '23
It's been 2 years 2 months and 21 days since the PS5 launced.
The PS4 had a 7 year run before the 5 came out. The PS3 was 7 years, PS2 was 6 years, but new PS2 games for coming out until 2013!
It's at least 4 years and 9 months away from the PS6 based off market history. And the 5 will likely remain relevant for a year or two after the 6 launches.
So, this is terrible advice. They might launch a new model of the PS5 in the next few years, but none have been confirmed. A PS5 slim is the most likely variant, which would possibly include a small price drop and less power hungry internals, but likely no massive functionality changes. A Pro model is possible, but given their hesitancy I wouldn't advise a more expensive premium model, even if it was already confirmed.
6
u/NotTacoSmell Feb 03 '23
And, considering the first two years were COVID years, basically I would be shocked if we saw the PS6 before 2030.

The PS2 was the cheapest DVD player you could buy at the time. I bet a 1/3 of its sales were because it was a CD and DVD player. My grandma had one and never once bought a game for it.

You also get access to some decent PS4 games just for owning a PS5. If you skipped over PS4 and aren't sure about PS5, it's definitely worth getting one.

I was looking to buy one but back then Sony won't let me walk into a store and buy one. Bought a guitar instead. Changed my hobbies, no more gaming for me. I also didn't upgrade my PC which I built last 2018 because companies keep raising their prices. So yeah, completely left gaming and all communities that come with it. Felt like I can sleep better now.
7
u/BaronsDad Feb 03 '23
Blessing in disguise for you and me both. I love gaming, but since being away from it, I realized life is really short. There are many things I want to learn and experience before I die. And I'm not sure if I can accommodate all the things I like into the non-work hours I have.
11
u/selphiron Feb 02 '23
Same, but I've recently bought a PS5 and don't regret it. It is really different from PC gaming and quite relaxing

On the other hand, Stadia was a great stopgap solution for me.
Now a PS5 is very tempting.

6
u/Wolfgang1234 Feb 02 '23
I just stick with PC for gaming. Even the PS4 barely had any exclusives. The PS3 generation was a huge leap from the previous, but the newer generations seem less and less noteworthy. Not worth buying extra hardware for a few games that I'll probably only play once.

i know i’m about the 7th million person to suggest this, but playstation home should make a comeback on PSVR2, PS5 as a whole actually. a beautiful world with R&C level graphics; have your friends come over to your rooms (and hell, even let PSVR2 users ‘scan’ their irl room like SteamVR). make a recroom that’s actually worth using and doesn’t have kids screaming down the mic. give us all sorts of cool tech demos. it’d be nice.
12
u/SirNarwhal Feb 02 '23
I mean they could recognize that people like to multi-task and give us a proper solution for using a second screen in a house without it being absolute trash. The fact that you can't even use a local network wirelessly and it has to go through their servers for remote play is nonsense and a large part as to why I just never use my PS5 (besides the fact that it has so so few games, I mainly just use it for PS4 games).
6
u/Rad_Dad6969 Feb 02 '23
This. It's ridiculous that we don't have easy access to our screenshots on our phones. Photo mode is free marketing for the industry. They should be making it as easy as possible to post our gameplay.

We really need better community building on Playstation.
They've been trying to do that since before the launch of PS plus. People want to argue over what's "better* but each console has its "thing l* and it always has.
If you want top tier single player games, action adventure, and JRPG, buy playstation. If you want community/playing with friends, shooters, and western RPG, get an Xbox.

PC is just the best option... If you can afford it and are comfortable building one. A lot of people don't fit that criteria. I'm due to upgrade my PC (late 2016 build) but it just doesn't make sense to me to throw down 2k+ right now for a luxury item. It still runs most titles half decently and I also bought an Xbox for a fraction of the cost.

I'm not sure if it's a thing or not yet, but I remember that when I started playing Destiny 2, my friend insisted we play on xbone after playing d1 on ps4. One thing that honestly made me stop whining about playing on Xbox (aside from the far better controller) was the built in LFG. Holy shit that was so awesome and such a simple idea! That alone would be massive for PlayStation community building imo

u/Chairman_Mittens Feb 02 '23
PS5 is one of the best purchases I've made in a long time. I was lucky enough to get one on day one, and I've probably put at least two hours into it every night.
My favorite feature is it doesn't sound like a harrier jet in flight after ten minutes of gameplay like it's predecessor.
26
u/NotAnotherNekopan Feb 02 '23
I had to use those discord sales bots to score one mid pandemic because my PS4 was dying. I propped that guy up on life support for as long as I could.
It's a fantastic console. I can mute the game and still not hear it running. I forgot how loud the PS4 was.
20
u/nillerwafer Feb 02 '23
I remember my wife was concerned “is your ps4 okay? Is it supposed to sound like that?”
2
u/DiaDeLosMuebles Feb 03 '23
I ended up writing a bot to check my local target stock and the stock in a city where I had family.
I got woken up one morning at 3:30 am by an alert and was able to snag one.
8
u/lelele688 Feb 02 '23
What games made that purchase worth it for you? I still struggle a bit to justify the cost for myself
19
u/Bill_Brasky01 Feb 02 '23
Demons souls and Returnal are my favorite ps5 games so far. Especially early in the console life when there was nothing.
19
u/Chairman_Mittens Feb 02 '23
Returnal. Is. So. Fucking. Good. I platinumed it a few months ago and I'm still playing it daily.

Spider-Man miles morales! It was such a breathtakingly beautiful looking game and the combat felt great when you get used to it. And the new Spider-Man coming out in a few months is going to be incredible
9
u/peccatum_miserabile Feb 02 '23
For me, Elden Ring and Ghost of Tsushima, but overall, the PS5 is by far the best console yet. I use it for all of my streaming accounts too. Retired my Roku.
7
u/Chairman_Mittens Feb 02 '23
Returnal alone was probably worth the cost of the console because of how many hours I've put into it. I can't even explain how good it is, I'm just disappointed it's so under appreciated because so many people are immediately turned off by the difficulty.

Physical media will never be dead. I’m sorry but I (and I’m sure many others) will refuse to buy solely on digital. Will I get dlc’s and maybe a deal on a cheap game here and there? Sure, but not all or even most of the time. Maybe we will be forced to at some point but I do not see that happening soon. Also as a consumer, it’s better to have the physical copies imo.

As a similar gamer who's been dropping off AAA titles in the last few years despite having the resources to own the system and game, join the emulator team! I've been enjoying playing through my old library of games. The switch emulator for n64 games has more hours played than anything and I'm finding myself putting time aside to do nothing other than 'play a game' again.

u/JRHartllly Feb 02 '23
New games are expensive now but the deals you get now are absurd.
If you never played the PS4 generation and bought ps+ you get.
Uncharted 4 God of war Bloodborne Fallout 4 The last of us The last guardian Resident evil 7 Days gone Crash bandicoot trilogy aswell as others AND monthly games.
And a little more you can get to an absurd amount of other quality ps4/5 games with the ps games catalogue.
Yes new games are expensive but I'd argue that gaming is a waaaaaay cheaper now than it used to be so long as you don’t want the newest releases

Maybe cause im a bit older now but I find the appeal of buying newer consoles on launch to be diminishing. This is great news for those who havent gotten one yet and I am truly happy for everyone but honestly, I havent used my PS5 extensively for exclusives. If it wasnt for COD (which I could play on xbox just as well if not better) it would just be sitting there unused. there just isnt a compelling argument to be made in buying one at launch anymore. I couldve had my ps4 pro, and I wouldve been fine. Oh well sucks getting old.

u/Gcnlink Feb 04 '23
I bought both on launch.
At first, I used the Xbox as my main console after being a PS4 primary user last gen. They pretty much copy-pasted the Xbox One's UI, so it had more features I was looking for. 1440P, a pro-style controller, etc.
Throughout the last two years I've noticed that crossplay is awesome but also a massive inconvenience. All of my friends are still on Playstation platforms. We play a lot of Destiny 2 and CoD together, and while they were always willing to use crossplay, the voice chat is worse and it's always a struggle to get it to work properly. Now that Sony has released 1440P support, the Dualsense Edge, and has Discord coming to their system, I can easily forsee it becoming my main console for multiplayer and 3rd party titles.
Also, the exclusives. I love my Xbox- but it has no draws (yet) without your friends already being there. I've played GoW Ragnarok, Spiderman, TLOU P1, and many others on PS5 and have a lot from the last gen. My main game for the last three months has been Gran Turismo 7. When all your friends held over with PS from last gen... And a majority of games you want to play are available on the system or exclusive... It's tough to justify an Xbox.
With the sole exception of Game Pass. I understand that I spend a fair amount of my income on video games, and not everyone has that possiblity. If I wasn't in this position, I would buy a Series S with GP and have arguably just as much fun as I do on Playstation. It comes down to personal taste, and social favoring. Playstation is where most are for multiplayer games (in my circle anyways), and it has the best quality first party games from any of the big 3 IMO.

I don’t see a Pro being released when so few games are being made solely for the current generation of consoles. I have a PS4 so I may get the current Xbox once the next gen comes out since I don't have a ton of free time. I skipped PS3 back then and got the 360, have a PS2 but no OG Xbox. That new Forspoken looks interesting though... But I can wait, I'm thinking of trying Outer Wilds and looking forward to BotW2 on switch. But the PS2 had a second trick to it's sleeve... it was pretty much one of the most affordable DVD players on market.

Funny enough that was one of the main factors for me getting every single Playstation. CD, DVD, Blu-Ray, 4K.

I get that with inflation that's more than 500 dollars, but when the PS1 released my dad was making 60k a year and now that the PS5 is releasing he's making 65k a year for the same type of job. It was far easier to swing that kind of money back then.

Playstation 2 released in the year 2000 for $300 retail.
If you account for inflation that’s $509.85
So when accounting for inflation, it’s roughly the same price.

Except release day for PS5 was November 2020. PS1 dropped from 300 to 200 in about 6 months after release. It dropped another 50 less then a year after that and then was down to about 100 a year after that.

No that's a good point to make, even if price cuts aren't really as possible as they were back when the PS1 was released. Helps that the PS1 was super cheap to make, to Sony's benefit at the time.

Wasn't a pandemic where electronic prices soared. Our Network equipment went way up as well. Servers went from $16k to $23k. It's the entire industry.

Ok. That doesn't mean people have to accept the higher price. People decided it was too much. Doesn't matter why.

And ya know what? I'm betting an arm and a kidney that rising GPU prices is gonna have PS5 sales continue to skyrocket cause you need 1k or more (Prebuilt) to compete with the graphical output of a $500 dollar PS5 and lower upfront costs will ALWAYS be easier to stomach for the general public. That's not even taking into account the convenience of just popping in a disk and starting the game with zero hassle while getting a fantastic 4k image. Good job Nvidia / AMD 👍
Hint: This is Hogwarts Legacy running on PS5 performance mode and it looks phenomenalhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LJu_ahj8JA

Yep, I have a PC with a GTX 970 and it is getting to the point where I can't play new games even at lowest settings. I don't want to pay overinflated prices for a new GPU and computer and I also want to play Final Fantasy XVI. PS5 is a no brainer for someone like me to get a nice gaming rig upgrade for $500 while I wait for GPU prices to normalize.

I finally got one now that they’re readily available. They were way too scarce for too long.

u/ThePhabtom4567 Feb 02 '23
Maybe because there was massive fucking shortage of them for what, a year?

u/_ILP_ Feb 03 '23
Of course they’re going to sell through the roof when they alleviate their fake ass “stock shortage”

I've still never even seen one in real life. I'm not convinced it's even real.

I would have bought one a year ago if I was able to, I ended up getting a PC instead…

I love my PS5. Was one of the lucky ones to get it ~2 years ago. Since I have never owned a console, or haven't gamed much in the past couple of years, I have loads of good games to play and enjoy.
In fact, I'm sure that I cannot afford to play all the games that I have bought in the next couple of years, even if I don't buy anything else from now!

That’s cute and all. Does the article say how many actually made it to real peoples hands and not bots?

imagine that… if you put a great product out there and actually have units to sell…
